Abstract:Novel organic-inorganic composites composed of two visible light responsive semiconductors of graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) and CdS were successfully synthesized via an "in situ" precipitation-deposition method. The C3N4-CdS heterostructures were fabricated by depositing CdS nanoparticles onto the surface of C3N4. The morphology and optical property of compsoites can be tuned by adjusting the mass ratio of C3N4-CdS, which determines the enhanced level of photocatalytic activity. The optimum activity of 0.7C(3)N(4)-0.3CdS photocatalyst is almost 20.5 and 3.1 times higher than those of individual C3N4 and CdS for the degradation of methyl orange, and 41.6 and 2.7 fold higher for the degradation of 4-aminobenzoic acid, respectively. Moreover, its activity is also much higher than those of C3N4-TiO2 and CdS-TiO2 composites, as well as N-modified TiO2. Of special significance is that the present C3N4-CdS composites exhibit high stabilities under illumination, in contrast with CdS. The enhancement in both performance and stability should be assigned to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges originating from the well-matched overlapping band-structures and closely contacted interfaces. Our work highlights that coupling semiconductors with well-matched band energies provides a flexible route to improve the activity and stability of photocatalysts, and gives ideas for the design and synthesis of other highly active and stable materials.

Abstract:As a metal-free semiconductor material, graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4), the high recombination rate of photogenerated charges and insufficient sunlight absorption limit its solar-based photocatalytic activity. Here, we reported the heterojunctions of C3N4–Cu2O with a p–n junction structure, which was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The HR-TEM result revealed an intimate interface between C3N4 and Cu2O in the heterojunction, and UV–vis diffuse reflection spectra showed their extended spectral response in the visible region compared with pure C3N4. These excellent structural and spectral properties, as well as p–n junction structures, endowed the C3N4–Cu2O heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activities. The possible photocatalytic mechanism that photogenerated holes as the mainly oxidant species in photocatalysis was proposed base on the trapping experiments.

Abstract:A novel 0D SnO2 nanoparticles/2D g-C3N4 nanosheets heterojunction has been successfully constructed by electrostatic self-assembly. The 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNNSs) are prepared by multiple thermal exfoliation at 500 °C, and 0D SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with the average diameter of about 30 nm are prepared by hydrothermal method. The experiment and calculation results have revealed that a built-in electric field (BIEF) has been established at the contact interface of SnO2/CNNSs type II heterojunction, and this BIEF can specify charge transfer direction and promote charge separation. Furthermore, the raised conduction band (CB) of CNNSs provides a greater driving force for the charge transfer from CNNSs to SnO2. SnO2/CNNSs heterojunction exhibits the highest degradation of 96.9% for Rhodamine B (RhB) within 50 min under simulated visible light, which is 32.3 and 1.5 times than that of SnO2 and CNNSs, respectively. The superoxide radical (•O2− )is confirmed as the most important active substance in photocatalytic activity and a possible photocatalytic mechanism of SnO2/CNNSs has been proposed for the improved photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Novel SnO 2– x /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction nanocomposites composed of reduced SnO 2– x nanoparticles and exfoliated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets were prepared by a convenient one-step pyrolysis method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the as-prepared nanocomposites were characterized in detail, indicating that the aggregation of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets was prevented by small, well-dispersed SnO 2– x nanoparticles. The ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy absorption bands of the nanocomposites were shifted to a longer wavelength region than those exhibited by pure SnO 2 or g-C 3 N 4 . The charge transfer and recombination processes occurring in the nanocomposites were investigated using linear scan voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under 30-W visible-light-emitting diode irradiation, the heterojunction containing 27.4 wt.% SnO 2– x exhibited the highest photocurrent density of 0.0468 mA·cm –2 , which is 33.43 and 5.64 times larger than that of pure SnO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction material was investigated by degrading rhodamine B under irradiation from the same light source. Kinetic study revealed a promising degradation rate constant of 0.0226 min −1 for the heterojunction containing 27.4 wt.% SnO 2– x , which is 32.28 and 5.79 times higher than that of pure SnO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The enhanced photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic performances of the nanocomposite may be due to its appropriate SnO 2– x content and the compact structure of the junction between the SnO 2– x nanoparticles and the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, which inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.

Abstract:In this paper, g-C3N4/SnO2:Sb composite photocatalysts were fabricated by in situ loading Sb-doped SnO2 (SnO2:Sb) nanoparticles on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets via a facile hydrothermal method. The synthesized g-C3N4/SnO2:Sb composites delivered enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance for degradation of rhodamine B in comparison with g-C3N4/SnO2 composites without doping Sb. Various techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, PL and electrochemical method were employed to demonstrate the successful fabrication of g-C3N4/SnO2:Sb composite and to investigate the enhanced mechanism of photocatalytic activity. The improvement of visible light absorption and the promotion of separation efficiency and interfacial transfer of photogenerated carriers induced by Sb doping were responsible for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. This study provides a simple and convenient method to synthesize a visible light responsive catalyst with promising performance for the potential application in environmental protection.

Abstract:A novel and simple in situ synthetic strategy was used to fabricate CdS/g-C 3 N 4 hybrid nanocomposite catalysts with visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity from cadmium-containing carbon nitride compounds. X-ray diffraction measurements, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, and Fourier transform infrared spectra showed heterojunctions with a close interface between the g-C 3 N 4 and the CdS nanoparticles and nanorods in the composite. Ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectra exhibited a red shift that further presented the CdS in the polymer g-C 3 N 4 skeleton, which allowed the efficient utilization of the solar spectrum for creating photogenerated electrons and holes. The photoluminescence spectra of the nanocomposites suggested charge transfer from g-C 3 N 4 to CdS. The photocurrent intensity of hybrid nanocomposites was 2.3 times than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 sample, and photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of methyl orange was 2.5 times, and hydrogen evolution reaction was 2.8 times. Enhanced photocatalytic activity and photocurrent for the CdS/g-C 3 N 4 hybrid nanocomposites were achieved.

Abstract:In this study, branch-like SnO2@ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated via a simple two-step hydrothermal process. The optical and electronic properties were characterized in detail and the results indicated that SnO2@ZnO nanocomposites (TZNCs) exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation as compared to pure SnO2 and ZnO. The excellent photocatalytic performance of TZNCs can be ascribed to the heterojunction structure between ZnO and SnO2 which depresses the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In addition, the branch-like morphology can provide large specific surface. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) computation on the Fermi level results confirmed that heterojunction structure between ZnO and SnO2 is more favor of the transfer of photogenerated eletrons from ZnO to SnO2, effectively improving separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Noteworthy, this work would pave the route for the two semiconductor materials with a big work function difference which would lead to the high contact potential difference, surely contributing to improving the performance of photocatalysts.
Construction of Co-doped Sn3O4/g-C3N4 heterojunction with enhanced interface transmission capatibility for improving hydrogen production

Abstract:In order to alleviate the increasingly serious energy problems, the researches and developments of photocatalysts with efficient solar energy utilization, low price and cost, and long-term stability are the critical problem to expand the application technology of photocatalysis. In this work, Co doped Sn3O4 and g-C3N4 were constructed into an S-scheme Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalytic system by simple and feasible solvothermal method for photocatalytic H2 evolution. And different loading amounts of Co–Sn3O4/CN-X were obtained by mean of changing the dosage of Co–Sn3O4. The synthesized photocatalysts represented exceptional H2 evolution performance under visible light irradiation (λ>420 nm), among which Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4-3 showed the best performance, and the H2 yield reached 1793.88 μmol h−1 g−1. This value was significantly higher than that of single catalysts Sn3O4 (294.82 μmol h−1 g−1) and g-C3N4 (1111.28 μmol h−1 g−1). Moreover, the H2 yield of reused Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4-3 sample kept above 1737.67 μmol h−1 g−1 during cyclic test. XPS, UV–vis DRS and a series of photoelectrochemical analysis ascertained the establishment of internal electric field and bending of the energy band between the interface of Co–Sn3O4 and g-C3N4, which provided the possibility for Co–Sn3O4 and CN to construct Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterostructure. What's more, the mechanism of producing H2 on the surface of Co–Sn3O4/g-C3N4 by oxidizing H2O was proposed. This work demonstrated the application prospect of reasonably designing g-C3N4 based photocatalysts with exceptional stability, sterling functionality and prominent efficiency for H2 evolution, and provided availed guidance for the research and development of g-C3N4 based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hierarchical hollow heterostructures with ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet subunits have various intrinsic advantages in photocatalytic aspects such as increasing light collection, accelerating electron hole separation and migration, and promoting surface redox reactions. Herein, we demonstrated the rational design and construction of hierarchical hollow core-shell g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 heterostructures with coating the ZnIn2S4 nanosheets on the hollow g-C3N4 spheres by a low temperature solvothermal route. The hollow g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 spherical nanoflower realized the improvement of photocatalytic activity by multiple scattering and reflection of light in the spherical cavity. Furthermore, the photo-generated charge carriers can be effectively separated by constructing layered heterojunctions. The optimized g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 exhibited the outstanding photocatalytic performance (nearly 84% degradation of tetracycline within 60 min visible light irradiation) as well as excellent cyclical stability. In addition, the total organic carbon removal (TOC) rate of the optimal g-C3N4@ZnIn2S4 composite photocatalyst can be reached up to 64%. Meanwhile, the possible degradation intermediates and degradation paths were analyzed by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS) test results. This work provides a feasible design idea of constructing the core-shell hierarchical hollow heterostructure photocatalyst with high photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:As metal-free visible light-driven semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted increasing attention owing to its excellent properties. However, the photocatalytic performance of the bare g-C3N4 has been significantly hampered by its inherent drawbacks. Herein, to further boost the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4, Bi2WO6 was in-situ successfully anchored onto g-C3N4 via a routine hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 heterojuctions display highly efficient photocatalytic activity toward decay of rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol aqueous solution under simulated sunlight irradiation. When the molar ratio of Bi:g-C3N4 was 4%, the Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 sample prepared exhibits highest photocatalytic activity. The highest photocatalytic performance of the 4% sample can be definitely attributed to the highest separation rate of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, supported by the results of surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS). The cycling experiments show that Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 composites display excellent stability. The photoinduced electron-hole separation and transfer of the Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 composites obey a direct Z-scheme mechanism based on the matched energy band, the analysis of main active species and the enhanced separation rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Novel In2O3/boron doped graphite-like carbon nitride (In2O3/g-C3N4B) heterojunction catalysts were successfully fabricated via a facile water-bath combined with calcination method. The resulting 5% In2O3/g-C3N4 catalyst with a proper In2O3 and B content exhibits excellent visible-light photocatalytic activities. Its conversion ratio for tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) and nitric oxide (NO) is 2.0, 1.9 times higher than that of In2O3/g-C3N4, g-C3N4B, g-C3N4B-R (reference sample), respectively. And its CH4 evolution rate is 9.0, 3.6, 2.2, 2.5 times higher than that of In2O3, g-C3N4, g-C3N4B, g-C3N4B-R, respectively. The remarkably enhanced photocatalytic properties are mainly attributed to the result that an appropriate boron and In2O3 modified the g-C3N4 promoted the efficient separation and transfer of photoinduced electrons and holes from the heterojunction interface by the band alignment between In2O3 and g-C3N4B. The probable mechanism on the activity enhancement was also discussed. Moreover, 5% In2O3/g-C3N4B shows good activity stability as evidenced by three recycling reactions. This work offers some useful insights to design and fabricate other highly efficient and stable g-C3N4-based heterojunction multifunctional materials for energy conversion and environmental restoration applications in the near future.
Construction of Zn0.2Cd0.8S/g-C3N4 nanosheet array heterojunctions toward enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 in visible light

Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction is severely limited by slow surface reaction kinetics and poor structural stability. In this study, a three-dimensional Zn0.2Cd0.8S/g-C3N4 (ZnCdS/CN) nanosheet array with type II-scheme heterojunction structures was prepared using a mild in situ method. This heterojunction structure exhibited greatly improved carrier separation and specific surface area (45 m2 g−1), excellent stability, and broad-spectrum visible-light sensitivity. Without the use of any sacrificial agent, ZnCdS/CN20% demonstrated the highest photocatalytic efficiency of all the samples, with a CH3OH yield of 700.5 μmol·g−1·h−1. The type-II-scheme heterojunction structure was responsible for the remarkable activity and stability because the photogenerated holes were transmitted to g-C3N4 across the heterojunction interface for the oxidation reaction, while the photogenerated electrons accumulated on Zn0.2Cd0.8S for the reduction reaction. This structure prevented oxidative corrosion on Zn0.2Cd0.8S and significantly improved the photogenerated electron–hole separation. This synthetic strategy provides new perspectives on the design and construction of efficient heterojunction photocatalysts for the solar-driven catalytic conversion of CO2.

Abstract:Removing wastewater with organic pollutants or medicine using semiconductor photocatalysts has attracted increasing attention in recent decades. However, low visible light utilization, high charge carrier recombination and insufficient surface active sites are still the limitation of photocatalysts. Herein, an in situ-forming BiOBr nanosheets on the surface of g-C3N4 were successfully synthesized via water bath in ambient temperature. The carboxyl group of acetic acid plays a vital role in growing for BiOBr nanosheets. The particular construction of g-C3N4/BiOBr composites increases the active sites and improve separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which strengthen photocatalytic degradation for pollutants. Meanwhile, electrons were transmitted quickly in the layered graphite carbon of g-C3N4 which owns excellent electrical conductivity. As a result, this work provides a novel approach to in-situ construction of semiconductor heterojunctions and demonstrates the prepared g-C3N4/BiOBr photocatalysts behave great potential in the removal of pollutants.

Facile Synthesis of Bimodal Macroporous G-C 3 N 4 /sno 2 Nanohybrids with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:It is of vital importance to construct highly interconnected, macroporous photocatalyst to improve its efficiency and applicability in solar energy conversion and environment remediation. Graphitic-like C3N4 (g-C3N4), as an analogy to two-dimensional (2D) graphene, is highly identified as a visible-light-responsive polymeric semiconductor. Moreover, the feasibility of g-C3N4 in making porous structures has been well established. However, the preparation of macroporous g-C3N4 with abundant porous networks and exposure surface, still constitutes a difficulty. To solve it, we report a first facile preparation of bimodal macroporous g-C3N4 hybrids with abundant in-plane holes, which is simply enabled by in-situ modification through thermally treating the mixture of thiourea and SnCl4 (pore modifier) after rotary evaporation. For one hand, the formed in-plane macropores endow the g-C3N4 system with plentiful active sites and short, cross-plane diffusion channels that can greatly speed up mass transport and transfer. For another, the heterojunctions founded between g-C3N4 and SnO2 consolidate the electron transfer reaction to greatly reduce the recombination probability. As a consequence, the resulted macroporous g-C3N4/SnO2 nanohybrid had a high specific surface area (SSA) of 44.3 m2/g that was quite comparable to most nano/mesoporous g-C3N4 reported. The interconnected porous network also rendered a highly intensified light absorption by strengthening the light penetration. Together with the improved mass transport and electron transfer, the macroporous g-C3N4/SnO2 hybrid exhibited about 2.4-fold increment in the photoactivity compared with pure g-C3N4. Additionally, the recyclability of such hybrid could be guaranteed after eight successive uses.

Abstract:Considering the fact of the cost control in photocatalysis, it is significant to develop the noble-metal-free photocatalysis for H2 evolution. Herein, CoS2 in-situ loading and S doping for g-C3N4 were synchronously constructed by hydrothermal and sulfidation processes. With systematical physicochemical characterizations, it was found that partial N atoms in g-C3N4 were replaced by S atoms, improving the visible-light absorption ability for more generation of photo-generated carriers. CoS2 as an effective noble-metal-free H2-evolution cocatalyst induced and captured photo-generated electrons for promoting separation of photo-generated carriers synergistically with S doping. More contact between CoS2 and g-C3N4 were formed by the in-situ growth of CoS2 nanosheets on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets. It was important that Co-S bonding between CoS2 and S-doped g-C3N4 was built by the synchronous construction of CoS2 in-situ loading and S doping, strengthening the directed transfer of photo-generated electrons from S-doped g-C3N4 to CoS2. Accordingly, the synergetic function of CoS2 in-situ loading and S doping effectively elevated the noble-metal-free photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 for H2 evolution under visible-light irradiation.
Facile One-Step Hydrothermal Synthesis of Single-Crystalline SnNb2O6 Nanosheets with Greatly Extended Visible-Light Response for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:The conventional preparation of SnNb2O6 invariably involves complex and laborious steps, which unavoidably introduces defect into the host lattice and also increases the reaction period and costs, resulting in undesired recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. For the first time in this work, we manage to synthesize single-crystalline two-dimensional (2D) SnNb2O6 nanosheets with ultrathin structure through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. Comparative studies were explored to analyze the structure and phase evolution during the preparation course. The synthesized 2D structure demonstrated a narrower band gap of 2.09 eV and specific surface area of 76.1 m2 g-1, which exhibited significantly extended visible-light-responsive range and larger surface area by contrast with the state-of-the-art reports, resulting in excellent visible-light-driven photoactivity towards H2 production and water purification as well. Additionally, further enhanced photocatalytic performance was achieved by the incorporation of Pt as co-catalyst to indirectly indicate the advantage of the SnNb2O6 nanosheets in this method over other reported counterparts. It was found that, a very small amount of Pt loaded on the surface of SnNb2O6 nanosheets would contribute to remarkably higher activity than pure SnNb2O6 nanosheets and exhibit superior stability as well. Moreover, a deep insight into the underlying photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. This work sheds light on a new facile way to fabricate high-performance photocatalytic materials and provided new opportunities for solar-energy conversion.

Abstract:The two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets based composites are prepared in the form of the NiS/g-C3N4, CdS/g-C3N4 and CdS/NiS/g-C3N4 using a facile and reliable method of chemical deposition. The TEM and HRTEM images demonstrated a spectacular representation of the 2D lamellar microstructure of the g-C3N4 with adequately attached CdS and NiS nanoparticles. The changes in crystallinity and the surface elemental valence states of composites with the incorporation of two metal sulphides are studied, which confirmed the formation of composites. The photocatalytic response of the composites was estimated by photodegradation of Rhodamine B (C28H31ClN2O3–RhB), and the ternary composite CdS/NiS/g-C3N4 samples exhibited the superior photocatalytic performance. Further, the free radical capture and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy experiments identified the main active species that contributed to the photocatalytic reaction. Besides, the samples’ photocatalytic performance was evaluated by photocatalytic hydrogen production. The stability of the performance-optimized composite was determined by employing cyclic experiments over five cycles. The CdS/NiS/g-C3N4 showed the highest efficiency of hydrogen production i.e. about 423.37 μmol.g−1.h−1, which is 2.89 times that of the pristine g-C3N4. Finally, two types of heterojunction structures were proposed to interpret the enhanced photocatalytic efficiency.
