Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel WDM-PON architecture to support efficient and bandwidth-scalable virtual private network (VPN) emulation over both inter-PON and intra-PON. The virtual ring link for the VPN communications among ONUs is realized by using additionally low-cost optical passive components and OFDMA technology. Moreover, the downstream traffic wavelength is reused for the upstream traffic signal by using re-modulation technology. We report on a successful transmission of 10.7 Gbps OOK upstream and 10.7 Gbps DPSK downstream, together with 1.25 Gbps 16-QAM OFDM VPN traffic, over 20 km no-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF).

Abstract:Energy efficiency has long been an important design consideration in Passive Optical Networks. Over the years, significant efforts have been seen in reducing the power consumption on user side equipment, i. e., Optical Network Units. As the capacity of PONs are increasing in terms of the number of wavelength channels and the line-rate, it is equally important to improve the power efficiency on the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) side. In this paper, we will introduce our recent efforts in reducing the cost and power consumption of the OLTs, by introducing dynamic wavelength sharing and switching. Our results show that under typical ONU online profiles, the proposed dynamic wavelength sharing schemes can reduce up to 70% power consumption, and also can reduce the number of required wavelengths by a similar number in a multiple-PON environment, without bringing in significant loss in ONU availability and performance.

Abstract:Power consumption in current communication networks including the access networks is increasing rapidly; energy efficiency is therefore one of the key design considerations in the next generation passive optical networks (PONs). In this paper, we investigate how a wavelength relocation mechanism can reduce power consumption and deployment cost of transceivers in time and wavelength division multiplexed PONs (TWDM-PONs), in which wavelengths and transceivers can be shared among multiple PONs. We analyze how the percentage of deployed wavelengths and transceivers will impact the average available bandwidth and cause extra delay for the working optical network units (ONUs). We show through simulation that under typical ONU online profiles, the percentage of wavelength and transceivers that need to be deployed can be reduced to as low as 30% as compared to conventional PONs, with no resource sharing and wavelength relocation.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to improve the energy efficiency of wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing - passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). By using an N × M opto-mechanic switch in optical line terminal (OLT), an OFDM modulation module is shared by several channels to deliver data to multiple users with low traffic demands during non-peak hours of the day, thus greatly reducing the number of operating devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. An experiment utilizing one OFDM modulation module to serve three optical network units (ONUs) in a WDM-OFDM-PON is performed to verify the feasibility of our proposal. Theoretical analysis and numerical calculation show that the proposed scheme can achieve a saving of 23.6% in the energy consumption of the OFDM modulation modules compared to conventional WDM-OFDM-PON.

Abstract:In this paper, key technologies, system proposals and future directions of next generation passive optical networks stage 2 (NG-PON2) are reviewed. We first discuss the potential solutions for NG-PON2 standardization. Then we focus on time and wavelength division multiplexed PON (TWDM-PON), which is the primary solution selected by Full Service Access Network (FSAN). The key technologies in TWDM-PON configuration are analyzed, including how to improve the bandwidth capacity and power budget of the system, and choose upstream tunable transceiver, etc. Several system proposals are illustrated as candidates for NG-PON2 configuration.

Abstract:It is believed that next-generation passive optical networks (PONs) are required to provide flexible and various services to users in a cost-effective way. To address this issue, for the first time, this paper proposes and demonstrates a novel wavelength-division-multiplexed PON (WDM-PON) architecture to simultaneously support three types of services: 1) wireless access traffic, 2) optical virtual passive network (VPN) communications, and 3) conventional wired services. In the optical line terminal (OLT), we use two cascaded Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) on each wavelength channel to generate an optical carrier, and produce the wireless and the downstream traffic using the orthogonal modulation technique. In each optical network unit (ONU), the obtained optical carrier is modulated by a single MZM to provide the VPN and upstream communications. Consequently, the light sources in the ONUs are saved and the system cost is reduced. The feasibility of our proposal is experimentally and numerically verified.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel TWDM-PON architecture. A 1G control channel is added to control all ONUs. Then, we establish a flexible management framework, including bandwidth assignment mechanism, auto-discovery process and ONU migration mechanism. Numerical simulation is conducted to show the flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Abstract:A novel protection architecture for passive optical networks (PONs) is presented and evaluated. It is based on the cyclic property of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) and the interconnection between two adjacent optical network units. The proposed scheme is compatible with both wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) PONs and hybrid WDM/time-division-multiplexing PONs. It is compared with two existing schemes and shown to have several advantages: 1) 50% less wavelengths is needed; 2) the fiber interconnections are simplified; 3) the connection availability is improved by one order of magnitude.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose that the power fading of double sideband for OFDM-PON induced by chromatic dispersion is smal when using low radio frequency (RF). The OFDM-PON based on time division multiplexing (TDM) architecture is the best solution for uplink colorless transmission. This makes ful use of the advantages of OFDM technique and colorless TDM architecture and is highly compatible with existing EPON and GPON. Time wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) PON based on OFDM is a strong candidate for future PON, which makes ful use of OFDM modulation to increase the capacity of a single carrier without changing the structure of TWDM-PON system, achieving 100 Gbit/s high-speed access.

Abstract:We propose a novel multicast-enable wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) passive-optical-network (PON) architecture that uses two sidebands of Optical Carrier Suppressed (OCS)-DPSK signal to carry the unicast and multicast data. The multicast wavelength control is realized through a Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS). At the optical line terminal (OLT), for each WDM channel, a single drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) is used to generate a subcarrier double-sideband (DSB) DPSK signal. Then, the lower-sideband signals are separated by an interleaver and subsequently modulated to deliver the multicast data, while the remaining upper-sideband DPSK signals carry the downstream unicast data. In the optical network units (ONUs), part of the downstream unicast signal power is re-modulated for upstream transmission, which enables color-free ONUs. This proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with a 1.25Gb/s downstream unicast and multicast data.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme to reduce the energy consumption of optical line terminal (OLT) in wavelength division multiplexing - orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-OFDM-PONs). In our scheme, a wireless communication technique, termed layered modulation, is introduced to maximize the transmission capacity of OFDM modulation module in the OLT by multiplexing data from different ONU groups with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margins onto the same subcarriers. With adaptive and dynamic subcarrier and layer allocation, several ONU groups with low traffic demands can share one OFDM modulation module to deliver their data during non-peak hours of a day, thus greatly reducing the number of running devices and minimizing the energy consumption of the OLT. Numerical calculation shows that an energy efficiency improvement of 28.3% in the OLT can be achieved by using proposed scheme compared to the conventional WDM-OFDM-PON. Abstract:The introduction of OFDM into PON networks is to leverage the merits of OFDM to provide the flexibility and reduce the cost. In this paper, we present our latest works on OFDM-PON. Firstly, we propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The multiplexed 10Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the architecture. Secondly, we propose and experimentally demonstrate wavelet packet transform based OFDM (WPT-OFDM) using real-valued transforms, which enables the cost-effective intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). Unlike conventional FFT-based OFDM, the need for cyclic prefix is eliminated due to the time-frequency localization properties of the wavelet.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new scheme to reduce the energy consumption of optical network units (ONUs) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical networks (OFDM PONs) by using time-domain interleaved OFDM (TI-OFDM) technique. In a conventional OFDM PON, each ONU has to process the complete downstream broadcast OFDM signal with a high sampling rate and a large FFT size to retrieve its required data, even if it employs a portion of OFDM subcarriers. However, in our scheme, the ONU only needs to sample and process one data group from the downlink TI-OFDM signal, effectively reducing the sampling rate and the FFT size of the ONU. Thus, the energy efficiency of ONUs in OFDM PONs can be greatly improved. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Compared to the conventional OFDM PON, our proposal can save 17.1% and 26.7% energy consumption of ONUs by halving and quartering the sampling rate and the FFT size of ONUs with the use of the TI-OFDM technology. Abstract:A novel hybrid WDM/TDM optical access network architecture called wavelength shared WDM PON and its media access control mode is proposed. The system is based on a two-stage distribution tree connecting OLT and ONUs.and uses ALOHA protocol for control channel and FIFO scheduler to efficiently assign bandwidth. The packet delay in the system is analyzed and the numerical results demonstrate that the system possesses well performance of packet delay.

Abstract:Energy-efficient time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network has been intensely investigated. However, conventional schemes aimed at energy efficiency may bring about repeated power-state transitions between sleep mode and active mode, resulting in periodic device-temperature cycling and frequent wavelength reassignment, which will greatly deteriorate network quality of service. These side effects become non-trivial when traffic fluctuates sharply as expected in the future. In this letter, we propose a wavelength-postponed-switching-off (WPS) strategy to reduce power-state transitions by means of postponing the power-off of redundant wavelengths. Redundant wavelengths represent wavelengths that are supposed to be powered off by conventional schemes when traffic declines. Illustrative results show that, the WPS strategy can provide a balanced performance of both energy efficiency and device lifetime, while decreasing service interruption caused by turning ON or OFF the equipment.
