Abstract:High harmonic generation (HHG) from gas phase atoms (or molecules) has opened up a new frontier in ultrafast optics, where attosecond time resolution and Angstrom spatial resolution are accessible. The fundamental physical pictures of HHG are always explained by the laser-induced recollision of particle-like electron motion, which lay the foundation of attosecond spectroscopy. In recent years, HHG has also been observed in solids. One can expect the extension of attosecond spectroscopy to the condensed matter if a description capable of resolving ultrafast dynamics is provided. Thus, a large number of theoretical studies have been proposed to understand the underlying physics of HHG. Here, we revisit the recollision picture in solid HHG and show some challenges of current methods with particle perspective, and present the recently developed wave perspective Huygens-Fresnel picture in understanding dynamical systems within the ambit of strong-field physics.

Ultrafast dephasing in solid state high harmonic generation: macroscopic origin revealed by real-space dynamics

Abstract:Using a fully real-space perspective on high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids, we examine the relationship between microscopic response, macroscopic propagation of this response to the far field, and the extremely short dephasing times routinely used in the theoretical simulations of experimentally measured solid-state HHG spectra. We find that far field propagation naturally reduces the contribution to the observed HHG emission from electrons that do not return to the lattice site where they have been injected into the conduction band. We then show that extremely short dephasing times routinely used in microscopic simulations suppress many electron trajectories that contribute to the far-field spectra, leading to significant distortions of the true high harmonic response. We show that a real-space based dephasing mechanism, which preferentially suppresses trajectories which veer too far away from their original lattice site, yield HHG spectra that faithfully retain those trajectories that contribute to the far-field spectra while filtering out those which do not, already at the microscopic level. Our findings emphasize the similarities between atomic and solid-state HHG by highlighting the importance of the intensity-dependent phase of HHG emission and address the longstanding issue regarding the origin of extremely short dephasing times in solid-state HHG.

Abstract:The generation of high-order harmonics in bulk solids subjected to intense ultrashort laser pulses has opened up new avenues for research in extreme nonlinear optics and light–matter interaction on subcycle time scales. Despite significant advancement over the past decade, a complete understanding of the involved phenomena is still lacking. High-harmonic generation in solids is currently understood as arising from nonlinear intraband currents, interband recollision, and ionization-related phenomena. As all of these mechanisms involve or rely upon laser-driven excitation, we combine measurements of the angular dependence of nonlinear absorption and high-order harmonic generation in bulk crystals to demonstrate the relation between high-harmonic emission and nonlinear, laser-induced ionization in solids. An unambiguous correlation between the emission of harmonics and laser-induced ionization is found experimentally, which is supported by numerical solutions of the semiconductor Bloch equations and an analytical model of orientation-dependent ionization rates using maximally localized Wannier functions.

Ultrafast Picometer-Resolved Molecular Structure Imaging by Laser-Induced High-Order Harmonics

Abstract:Real-time visualization of molecular transformations is a captivating yet challenging frontier of ultrafast optical science and physical chemistry. While ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction methods can achieve the needed subangstrom spatial resolution, their temporal resolution is still limited to hundreds of femtoseconds, much longer than the few femtoseconds required to probe real-time molecular dynamics. Here, we show that high-order harmonics generated by intense femtosecond lasers can be used to image molecules with few-ten-attosecond temporal resolution and few-picometer spatial resolution. This is achieved by exploiting the sensitive dependence of molecular recombination dipole moment to the geometry of the molecule at the time of harmonic emission. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we have applied this high-harmonic structure imaging (HHSI) method to monitor the structural rearrangement in NH_{3}, ND_{3}, and N_{2} from one to a few femtoseconds after the molecule is ionized by an intense laser. Our findings establish HHSI as an effective approach to resolve molecular dynamics with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution, which can be extended to trace photochemical reactions in the future.

Abstract:We present numerical simulations of high-order harmonic generation in helium using a temporally synthesised and spatially non-homogeneous strong laser field. The combination of temporal and spatial laser field synthesis results in a dramatic cut-off extension far beyond the usual semiclassical limit. Our predictions are based on the convergence of three complementary approaches: resolution of the three dimensional Time Dependent Schr\"odinger Equation, time-frequency analysis of the resulting dipole moment and classical trajectories extraction. Employing a combination of temporally and spatially synthesised laser field provides coherent XUV photons beyond the carbon K-edge which is of high interest for initiating inner-shell dynamics and study time-resolved intra-molecular attosecond spectroscopy.

Abstract:The generation of high-order harmonics based on the interaction between ultrafast intense laser and matter provides a platform for studying the light-matter interaction in the non-perturbative region. It is also the main route to generating desktop extreme ultraviolet light source and attosecond pulse. The non-perturbative solid high-order harmonic involves the core content of ultrafast strong field physics, condensed matter physics, materials science, information science and other fields. Since it was first experimentally observed in 2011, it has rapidly become the research frontier of strong field physics and attosecond science. This review summarizes the research progress and important applications of solid high-order harmonics from the perspective of an experimentalist. Firstly, distinct characteristics are shown for solid high-order harmonic by comparing the dependence of harmonic yield and cut-off energy on driving laser parameters with gas high-order harmonic. Then, the progress of manipulation and application are highlighted for solid high-order harmonic, including the precise control of harmonic yield, polarization, space-time distribution through the design of target structure or laser field, as well as the application of solid high-order harmonic spectroscopy in the fields of material structure characterization and ultrafast electron dynamics. Finally, the future is prospected for the study of solid high-order harmonics.
Molecular internal dynamics studied by quantum path interferences in high order harmonic generation

Abstract:We investigate how short and long electron trajectory contributions to high harmonic emission and their interferences give access to intra-molecular dynamics. In the case of unaligned molecules, we show experimental evidences that the long trajectory signature is more dependent upon the molecule than the short one, providing a high sensitivity to cation nuclear dynamics within 100's of as to few fs. Using theoretical approaches based on Strong Field Approximation and Time Dependent Schrodinger Equation, we examine how quantum path interferences encode electronic motion whilst molecules are aligned. We show that the interferences are dependent on channels superposition and upon which ionisation channel is involved. In particular, quantum path interferences encodes electronic migration signature while coupling between channels is allowed by the laser field. Hence, molecular quantum path interferences is a promising method for Attosecond Spectroscopy, allowing the resolution of ultra-fast charge migration in molecules after ionisation in a self-referenced manner.

Abstract:High harmonic generation in solids is becoming an important method for strong field solid state physics research. The power scale relationship between high harmonics and the driving laser is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Results of the power scale dependence clearly divided the interaction into two regimes. The modification of the bandgap by intense laser proved to be very important for theoretically reproducing the experimental result. Combining with the Keldysh theory analysis, the harmonic generation process is found to be transitioned from multiphoton excitations to the diabatic tunneling.

Abstract:The demanding experimental access to the ultrafast dynamics of materials challenges our understanding of their electronic response to applied strong laser fields. For this purpose, trapped ultracold atoms with highly controllable potentials have become an enabling tool to describe phenomena in a scenario where some effects are more easily accessible and twelve orders of magnitude slower. In this work, we introduce a mapping between the parameters of attoscience platform and atomic cloud simulators, and propose an experimental protocol to access the emission spectrum of high harmonic generation, a regime that has so far been elusive to cold atom simulation. As we illustrate, the benchmark offered by these simulators can provide new insights on the conversion efficiency of extended and short nuclear potentials, as well as the response to applied elliptical polarized fields or ultrashort few-cycle pulses.

Abstract:Real-space picture of electron recollision with the parent ion guides our understanding of the highly nonlinear response of atoms and molecules to intense low-frequency laser fields. It is also among several leading contestants for the dominant mechanism of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids, where it is typically viewed in the momentum space, as the recombination of the conduction band electron with the valence band hole, competing with another HHG mechanism, the strong-field driven Bloch oscillations. In this work, we use numerical simulations to directly test and confirm the real-space recollision picture as the key mechanism of HHG in solids. Our tests take advantage of the well-known characteristic features in the molecular harmonic spectra, associated with the real-space structure of the molecular ion. We show the emergence of analogous spectral features when similar real-space structures are present in the periodic potential of the solid-state lattice. This work demonstrates the capability of HHG imaging of spatial structures of a unit cell in solids.

Abstract:Optical modulation of high-harmonics generation in solids enables the detection of material properties such as the band structure and promising new applications such as super-resolution imaging in semiconductors. Various recent studies have shown optical modulation of high-harmonics generation in solids, in particular, suppression of high-harmonics generation has been observed by synchronized or delayed multi-pulse sequences. Here we provide an overview of the underlying mechanisms attributed to this suppression and provide a perspective on the challenges and opportunities regarding these mechanisms. All-optical control of high-harmonic generation allows for femtosecond, and in the future possibly subfemtosecond, switching, which has numerous possible applications: These range from super-resolution microscopy, to nanoscale controlled chemistry, and highly tunable nonlinear light sources.

Abstract:High-harmonic generation in solids allows probing and controlling electron dynamics in crystals on few femtosecond timescales, paving the way to lightwave electronics. In the spatial domain, recent advances in the real-space interpretation of high-harmonic emission in solids allows imaging the field-free, static, potential of the valence electrons with picometer resolution. The combination of such extreme spatial and temporal resolutions to measure and control strong-field dynamics in solids at the atomic scale is poised to unlock a new frontier of lightwave electronics. Here, we report a strong intensity-dependent anisotropy in the high-harmonic generation from ReS$_2$ that we attribute to angle-dependent interference of currents from the different atoms in the unit cell. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the laser parameters control the relative contribution of these atoms to the high-harmonic emission. Our findings provide an unprecedented atomic perspective on strong-field dynamics in crystals and suggest that crystals with a large number of atoms in the unit cell are not necessarily more efficient harmonic emitters than those with fewer atoms.

Abstract:High-order harmonics generated by the interaction between intense femtosecond laser and matter have the characteristics of high single photon energy,ultrashort pulse duration,and excellent spatiotemporal coherence. It can be used as the tabletop ultrafast vacuum ultraviolet laser source and soft X-ray laser source in laboratory. At the same time, high-order harmonics are used to generate attosecond pulses. The generation of these advanced laser sources has greatly enriched the research tools of material science. In this review article, we introduce the principle, optimization,and application of high-order harmonics of gases and solids.

Abstract:Studies of laser-driven strong field processes subjected to a (quasi-)static field have been mainly confined to theory. Here we provide an experimental realization by introducing a bichromatic approach for high harmonic generation (HHG) in a dielectric that combines an intense 70 femtosecond duration mid-infrared driving field with a weak 2 picosecond period terahertz (THz) dressing field. We address the physics underlying the THz field induced static symmetry breaking and its consequences on the efficient production/suppression of even-/odd-order harmonics, and demonstrate the ability to probe the HHG dynamics via the modulation of the harmonic distribution. Moreover, we report a delay-dependent even-order harmonic frequency shift that is proportional to the time derivative of the THz field. This suggests a limitation of the static symmetry breaking interpretation and implies that the resultant attosecond bursts are aperiodic, thus providing a frequency domain probe of attosecond transients while opening opportunities in precise attosecond pulse shaping.

Abstract:We explore the nonlinear response of ultrafast strong-field driven excitons in a one-dimensional solid with ab initio simulations. We demonstrate from our simulations and analytical model that a finite population of excitons imprints unique signatures to the high-harmonic spectra of materials. We show the exciton population can be retrieved from the spectra. We further demonstrate signatures of exciton recombination and that a shift of the exciton level is imprinted into the harmonic signal. The results open the door to high-harmonic spectroscopy of excitons in condensed-matter systems.

Attosecond control of solid-state high harmonic generation using ω-3ω fields

Abstract:Controlling the electron dynamics in matter by individual oscillations of light fields has recently led to the development of attosecond metrology. One of the phenomena resulting from the nonlinear response of materials in the strong-field interaction regime is coherent emission of high energy photons. High harmonic spectra carry the fingerprints of sub-cycle electronic motion and the energy structure of the studied system. Here we show that tailoring the waveform of the driving light by using a coherent combination with its third harmonic frequency allows to control the electron tunneling time within each half-cycle of the fundamental wave with attosecond precision. We introduce an experimental scheme in which we simultaneously monitor the modulation of amplitude and emission delays of high harmonic radiation and the excited electron population generated in crystalline silicon as a function of the relative phase between the {\omega}-3{\omega} fields. The results reveal unambiguously the connection between the dynamics of electron tunneling and high harmonic generation processes in solids.

Abstract:With the fast development of intense laser technologies, a lot of new phenomena in la- ser-matter interactions have been experimentally observed and successfully explained by various theories and simulations. One of the specular processes is high-order harmonic generation (HHG), in which atoms and molecules can emit photons with energies equal to multiple of the fundamental laser photon energy. By synthesizing several neighboring orders of HHG spectra near its cutoff, experimentalists have been able to generate laser pulses of duration in the attosecond time scale (1 as = 10~(-18) s). The availability of attosecond pulses has opened a drastically new regime of ultrafast sciences, where it is possible for scientists to trace and control the motion of electrons on its natural scale. After the fruitful developments of femtosciences in the last two decades, the newly opened attosecond science is another big jump of human being to understand and control the internal dynamics of atoms and molecules. In this paper, we will give a brief review of what we have done in recent years, especially about tracing and controlling the electronic motion of atoms and molecules by attosecond pulses.
Overcoming the absorption limit in high-harmonic generation from crystals

Abstract:Since the new millennium coherent extreme ultra-violet and soft x-ray radiation has revolutionized the understanding of dynamical physical, chemical and biological systems at the electron's natural timescale. Unfortunately, coherent laser-based upconversion of infrared photons to vacuum-ultraviolet and soft x-ray high-order harmonics in gaseous, liquid and solid targets is notoriously inefficient. In dense nonlinear media, the limiting factor is strong re-absorption of the generated high-energy photons. Here we overcome this limitation by allowing high-order harmonics generated from a periodic array of thin one-dimensional crystalline silicon ridge waveguides to propagate in the vacuum gaps between the ridges, thereby avoiding the high absorption loss of the bulk nonlinear material and resulting in a ~ 100-fold increase in propagation length. As the grating period is varied, each high-harmonic shows a different and marked modulation, indicating the onset of coherent addition which is otherwise suppressed in absorption-limited emission. By beating the absorption limit, our results pave the way for bright coherent short-wavelength sources and their implementation in nano-photonic devices.
