Abstract:Self-assembled vesicles formed by symmetrical coil rod coil triblock copolymer in selective solvents are investigated by dissipative particle dynamics method. With varying the coil length L-c and the rod length L-r, five kinds of typically ordered micelles are observed, including the special vesicles formed in the range of the rod block ratio f(r) approximate to 30% similar to 50% and the rod length L-r <= 9. The kinetic process of vesicle formation is also observed. The aggregates firstly experience the fusion, elongation, and deformation, and then encompass the solvents, and finally close up to a vesicle membrane, where the bilayer disc is observed as an intermediate phase transited from solid micelles to hollow vesicles. A scaling behavior of the average aggregate size with time is also obtained during the process of the self-assembly. Furthermore, the effects of polymer concentration f(p) and solvent property are discussed. Vesicle structure only appears in the range of f(p) = 6% similar to 25%, where vesicle size exhibits a well linear increase with polymer concentration. Meanwhile, vesicle size decreases with an increase in the interactions a(CS) between coil blocks and solvents. Due to the interfacial energy increased with a(CS), the system minimizes interfacial energy by compressing the vesicle size. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Herein, we report a novel Janus particle and supramolecular block copolymer consisting of two chemically distinct hyperbranched polymers, which is coined as Janus hyperbranched polymer. It is constructed by the noncovalent coupling between a hydrophobic hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-oxetanemethanol) with an apex of an azobenzene (AZO) group and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol with an apex of a beta-cyclodextrin (CD) group through the specific AZO/CD host-guest interactions. Such an amphiphilic supramolecular polymer resembles a tree together with its root very well in the architecture and can further self-assemble into unilamellar bilayer vesicles with narrow size distribution, which disassembles reversibly under the irradiation of UV light due to the trans-to-cis isomerization of the AZO groups. In addition, the obtained vesicles could further aggregate into colloidal crystal-like close-packed arrays under freeze-drying conditions. The dynamics and mechanism for the self-assembly of vesicles as well as the bilayer structure have been disclosed by a dissipative particle dynamics simulation.

Abstract:We report a three-step tandem polymer self-assembly, from PS-b-P4VP macromolecules to vesicles, from vesicles to chains, and from chains to stacked bowls. Once aggregated, the soft vesicles and the hydrogen-bonded interface favor the gradual increase of the contact area, thus promoting concerted optimization toward stacked bowls. The continual structural modification opens a new route for exploring sophisticated synthetic control and complex shapes.

Abstract:In contrast to the conventional hierarchical self-assembly process, effective methods to enable reversible hierarchical self-assembly of block copolymers are comparatively few and limited in scope. Herein, we report, for the first time, a simple yet robust strategy for light-induced reversible hierarchical self-assembly of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer, poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly[6-[4-(4-butyloxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate] (denoted P4VP-b-PAzoMA). The hierarchical structures are constructed via a two-step self-assembly process (first-level reverse micelles, second-level compound micelles, and rearrangement into micrometer-sized vesicles) driven by use of solvent. Intriguingly, because of reversible photoinduced trans-to-cis isomerization of azobenzene moieties in PAzoMA, the vesicles could disassemble into subunits upon UV light and then recover the nearly identical vesicular morphology upon visible light. Such a reversible hierarchical self-assembly process is accompanied by reversible fluorescence, encapsulation, and controlled release of dyes and can be used as a template for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Clearly, the ability to render the light-enabled reversible hierarchical self-assembly provides a unique platform for smart delivery vehicles and templates for nanomaterials.

Abstract:This study reports the self-assembly of novel polymer vesicles from an amphiphilic multiblock copolyamide, and the vesicles show a special structure with an ultrathin wall thickness of about 4.5 nm and a combined bilayer and monolayer packing model. Most interestingly, the vesicles are ultrasound-responsive and can release the encapsulated model drugs in response to ultrasonic irradiation.

Abstract:A new concept of designing a photocontrollable supramolecular polymer nanocontainer through the electrostatic association between an azobenzene-containing surfactant (AzoC10) and a double-hydrophilic block ionomer, poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PEG(43)-PAA(153)), is described. Such a block ionomer complex can self-assemble in aqueous solution and form vesicle-like aggregates, which are composed of a poly(ethylene glycol) corona and a poly(acrylic acid) shell associated with azobenzene-containing surfactant. The photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties in the block ionomer complex can reversibly tune the amphiphilicity of the surfactants, inducing the disassembly of the vesicles. Such block ionomer complex vesicles are further evaluated as nanocontainers capable to encapsulate and release guest solutes on demand controlled by light irradiation. For example, the vesicles encapsulating the fluorescein sodium display clear spherical images observed by fluorescence microscopy. However, such fluorescence-marked images disappear after releasing the solute from the vesicles triggered by the UV light. Such novel materials are of both basic and practical significance, especially as prospective nanocontainers for cargo delivery.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough a great deal of unique nanostructures were already obtained from polymer self-assemblies in terms of conventional parameters, the self-assembly under the confinement is still not well understood. Here, dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to explore the self-assemble behaviors of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements. First several unusual morphologies, such as multilayer onion, coupled helix, and stacked lamella, were distinguished from the total 210 simulations. Second, the influences of three important parameters (block sequence, wall selectivity, and spherical radius) on the morphologies were discussed in detail. Finally, the dynamics evolution of several typical aggregates was examined. This simulation enriches micelle morphologies for the self-assembly of linear ABC triblock copolymers under rigid spherical confinements and is helpful to understand the formation of valuable nanostructures from linear ABC terpolymers.

Abstract:A novel diblock copolymer with a hydrophobic supramolecular polymer block and a hydrophilic traditional polymer block has been prepared. Control over the chain length ratio of the two blocks is obtained by simply changing the concentration proportion of the monomer of the supramolecular polymer block to the traditional polymer block in solution. When the chain length ratio of the two blocks is changed, the formation of various self-assembly morphologies is achieved.

Abstract:A novel triblock copolymer containing azobenzene (AZO) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a poly(ethylene oxide) bifunctional macroinitiator (Br-PEO-Br). The triblock copolymer was characterized by H-1 NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Uniformly distributed polymeric micelles were obtained in aqueous solution by self-assembly method. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used for the investigation of the self-assemblies and their stimuli-responsive behavior. Photoinduced release behavior was achieved with the as-prepared triblock copolymer micelles, which has not been observed in our previously-reported diblock copolymer micelles: the fluorescence intensity of Nile Red trapped in the triblock copolymer micelles dropped by approximately 40% after UV and Vis light alternative irradiation, indicating that a portion of the Nile Red was released to the aqueous media. Besides, the micelles shrank during the heating process.

Abstract:Self-assembly of an ABA amphiphilic triblock copolymer into vesicles in dilute solution was studied by successfully combining experimental methods and a real-space self-consistent field theory in three-dimensional space. It was found experimentally that vesicle size was sensitive to the initial copolymer concentration in the organic solvent. Also, the aggregate morphologies and vesicles sizes were found to be dependent on the annealing time. A number of complex vesicles, such as global, long-style, trigonal, and necklacelike vesicles, were obtained in our experiments. Moreover, the corresponding microstructures were produced in our simulations. The results show that various vesicles in dilute solution are formed solely on account of the inhomogeneous density distribution in the local region in nature. Our simulations confirm that the structural complexity coexisting behavior in the single-amphiphile systems is largely attributed to the metastability rather than the polydispersity of the triblock copolymer. These metastable states should strongly depend on the pathway of the system on the free energy landscapes, which is governed by the initial condition.

Abstract:Self-assembly behavior of rod–coil–rod poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(γ-benzyl-l-glutamate) (PBLG-b-PEG-b-PBLG) triblock copolymers with various PBLG block lengths in aqueous solution was investigated. The PBLG-b-PEG-b-PBLG triblock copolymers are able to self-assemble into vesicles when PBLG block length is relatively short. Meanwhile, the initial polymer concentration was found to have influence on the self-assembly. Giant vesicles can be observed when the initial concentration is high. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations about the vesicles revealed that the rigid rod blocks could be aligned parallelly with each other to form the monolayer vesicles wall. When the PBLG block length in the PBLG-b-PEG-b-PBLG triblock copolymers increases, the aggregate morphologies were observed to transform from vesicles to spherical micelles. Based on the experimental and simulation results, we proposed a possible mechanism of the morphological transitions of the rod–coil–rod triblock copolymer aggregates.

Abstract:Distinct entropy definitions have been used to obtain an inverse correlation between the residual size and entropy for Heavy Ion Collisions. This explains the existence of several temperatures for different residual size bins, as reported elsewhere (Natowitz et. al., 2002). HIC collisions were simulated using binary interaction LATINO model where Pandharipande potential replicates internucleonic interaction. System temperature is defined as the temperature obtained when Kinetic Gas Theory is applied to the nucleons in the participant region. Fragments are detected with an Early Cluster Recognition Algorithm that optimizes the partitions in energy space.

Abstract:Poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) with a beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) at the chain end was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP); poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with a -C=C- segment and an adamantane (Ada) group at two ends, respectively, was prepared through ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with a -S-C(S)-S- segment, which can be converted into a thiol group, was yielded by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). A supramolecular triblock stimuli-responsive copolymer PNIPAM-b-PCL-b-PDMAEMA having good biocompatibility with PNIPAM and PDMAEMA hydrophilic segments and PCL hydrophobic segment was constructed by thiol-ene Michael addition and host- guest interaction. The triblock copolymer could self-assemble into vesicles and respond to carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and temperature reversibly. Under the stimulation of CO2, the vesicular assemblies swelled obviously; while raising the temperature from 25 to 40 degrees C, the assemblies displayed a conversion between vesicles and spherical micelles.

Abstract:Two end-decorated homopolymers, poly(styrene)-beta-cyclodextrin (PS-beta-CD) and poly(ethylene oxide)-ferrocene (PEO-Fc), can orthogonally self-assemble into a supramolecular diblock copolymer (PS-beta-CD/PEO-Fc) in aqueous solutions based on the terminal host guest interactions. These assemblies can further form supramolecular vesicles, and their assembly and disassembly behaviors can be reversibly switched by voltage through the reversible association and disassociation of the middle supramolecular connection. The vesicles possess an unprecedented property that their assembly or disassembly speed can be controlled by the applied voltage strength. Luminescence spectroscopy demonstrates that the vesicles act as nanocapsules carrying molecules within their hollow cavities and that the external voltage strength accurately regulates the drug release time.

Abstract:Well-defined amphiphilic triblock copolymers with carbazole pendants (PVACB-PEG2000-PVACB) were synthesized via the combination of reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and “click” chemistry. All of the intermediate and final products were characterized using 1H NMR, FT-IR and GPC. Cup-shaped vesicles were then fabricated via self-assembly of the carbazole-containing amphiphilic triblock copolymers in aqueous solution, which were characterized by TEM and SEM. These novel carbazole-based polymeric vesicles were found to exhibit interesting aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics compared with the fluorescence intensity of the polymers in organic solution.

Abstract:Self-assembly of stimuli-responsive block copolymers in aqueous solution has attracted considerable attention in the past few decades. Herein, we report a supramolecular modular synthetic approach for the fabrication of photo-responsive block-controllable supramolecular polymers (BSPs) based on the assembly of two homopolymers in water. The homopolymers, namely, the polystyrene modified with adamantane and azobenzene as the end groups (Ad–PS–Azo) and poly(ethylene glycol) modified with β-CD (PEG–β-CD), were successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click chemistry, respectively. The supramolecular triblock copolymer (STP) was constructed through host–guest interactions between β-CD and Ad/Azo moieties, and further self-assembled into micelles in aqueous solution, which were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). This well-defined supramolecular triblock copolymer can reversibly disassemble into a supramolecular diblock copolymer (SDP) by alternating irradiation of UV/visible light, which was revealed by TEM, UV-vis and 1H NMR.

Abstract:A series of novel well-defined supramolecular ABA triblock copolymers of polyrotaxane are synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMA) initiated by a polypseudorotaxane initiator of alpha-cyclodextrins (alpha-CDs) and PEG. The molecular structure of the ABA triblock copolymer with a polyrotaxane as B block, poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-PEG[included by alpha-CDs]-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (DMA-b-PEGCD-b-DMA), was confirmed by two-dimensional rotating frame Overhauser effect spectroscopy (2D ROESY) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Self-assembly behaviors of the copolymers in water solution were studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), static light scattering (SLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Different from the model triblock copolymer without alpha-CDs and the polypseudorotaxanes composed of homo-PEG and alpha-CDs, the supramolecular triblock copolymers in water self-assembled into spheres with an amorphous core. Furthermore, the block copolymers at an acidic aqueous solution where the flanking chains were protonated generated the particles with a core of hexagonally packed polyrotaxanes. It is interesting to notice that the particles further aggregated into large disks induced by the solvent evaporation.
Synthesis of a Linear-Hyperbranched Supramolecular Polymer and Its Light-Responsive Self-Assembly Behavior

Abstract:Herein we reported the synthesis, self-assembly and light-responsive disassembly of a "linear-hyperbranched" supramolecular polymer. Firstly, a hyperbranched polymer CD-g-HPG composed of hyperbranched polyglycerol with a beta-cyclodextrin group in the center was synthesized by ring-opening multibranching polymerization (ROMBP). Secondly, a linear polymer AZO-PS composed of polystyrene with an azobenzene group at the end was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, the linear AZO-PS and hyperbranched CD-g-HPG were conjugated together through the specific CD/AZO host-guest interactions, leading to the formation of the "linear-hyperbranched" supramolecular polymer PS-b-HPG. This supramolecular polymer was amphiphilic and could self-assemble into vesicles in water. The host-guest complexation ability was characterized by UV-Vis titration. In the case of keeping the concentration of AZO-PSs unchanged, the absorption peak at 330 nm increased gradually with the addition of CD-g-HPGs, which supported the occurrence of complexation between beta-CD groups in CD-g-HPGs and AZO groups in AZO-PSs. The host-guest CD/AZO complexation constant of 4.14x10(4) M-1 was calculated by the Benesi-Hildebrand plot. A Job plot was generated, from which it was determined that the binding stoichiometry between AZO-PS and CD-g-HPG is 1:1. The self-assemblies of the amphiphlic linear-hyperbranched supramolecular polymers were characterized by SEM and TEM. The SEM images showed that the self-assemblies were spherical particles, and the holes directly be seen in some particles indicated that they were vesicles or hollow spheres with a very thin wall thickness. The TEM images of self-assemblies stained with ruthenium tetroxide (RuO4) indicated that the spherical particles were vesicles according to a clear contrast difference between the inner pool and the outer thin wall. At last, we showed that the vesicles could disassemble under UV light due to the trans-to-cis isomerisation of the AZO groups. With the continuous UV irradiation on vesicles, the absorption peak of trans-AZO diminished gradually and almost completely disappeared after 900 seconds. Meanwhile, the solution was transformed from turbid to transparent followed with the appearance of yellow precipitates in the bottom of the bottle.

Abstract:A new triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)monomethyl ether-b-poly(acrylic aid)-b-poly[6-4-methoxy-azobenzene-4′-oxy)hexyl methylacrylate]was synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)method.The self-assembly behaviors in aqueous media,pH sensitive and photo-sensitive properties of this copolymer were studied by the means of transmis-sion electron microscopy (TEM),scanning electron microscopy (SEM),laser light scattering (LLS)and UV-Vis spectropho-tometer.It is found that the polymer can self-assemble into vesicle structure.With decreasing the pH value,the particle size of the aggregates increases sharply obviously bigger when pH<3.4.However,there is not significant change for the particle size of micelles when pH>3.4.Upon irradiation with polarized light,the aggregates are elongated with increasing the irradiation time.
