Abstract:Graphene/conjugated polymer nanocomposites are a special type of composite materials that have been investigated in detail due to its extraordinary electrical, optical and electrochemical properties. An enormous number of optoelectronic and biomedical devices can be constructed using this special class of composite materials. Herein, polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), polythiophene (PT), polyacetylene (PAC) and polypyrene (PPr) have been selected for the preparation of graphene-based nanocomposites. The structural and morphological characterizations have been established to confirm the chemical interaction between the conjugated polymer and graphene. It is seen that the chemical interaction is higher for chemically functionalized graphene/conjugated polymer nanocomposites as compared to the pristine graphene/conjugated polymer nanocomposites. The optoelectronic and biological applications of the nanocomposites include dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), transparent electrodes, touch screen, pharmaceutical, biomedical and environmental fields. It is seen that PANI- and PPy-based nanocomposites are mainly used for the fabrication of biosensor as well as energy storage devices. The nanocomposites exhibit fast response, good reproducibility, satisfied stability, excellent selectivity and low detection limits towards the detection of biomolecules in physiological solutions. In contrast, PT-based nanocomposites and its derivatives such as poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) have been widely used for the fabrication of DSSC, light-emitting diode and several other photovoltaic devices. It has been found that power conversion efficiency (PCE) (similar to 6%) of the graphene/conjugated polymer nanocomposite electrodes is almost comparable to that of Pt counter electrode used in the DSSCs.
