Abstract:As an increasing number of linked datasets are progressively published on the Semantic Web, discovering the most similar entities in large linked datasets becomes crucial in many semantic applications. Conventional approaches usually draw upon either ontology or taxonomy, or relationships unilaterally. In this chapter, we present a novel approach called semantic similarity transition (SST), which utilizes node and link types together with the topology of a semantic graph to derive a similarity graph from linked datasets. First, SST is proposed to calculate the similarity between two resources. A comprehensive method is used to calculate the similarity between two sets of objects. A weighted aggregate of similarity is used to improve the final result by considering different link types in the linked dataset. Furthermore, a similarity graph is derived and visualized based on the calculated similarity. An empirical evaluation shows that the SST approach outperforms the existing conventional methods. Furthermore, a system is implemented to enable smooth interaction and visualization of the similarity graph, which is derived based on the calculated similarity. We apply this approach to a real-world linked dataset generated in the health care domain, and the evaluation result shows that our method yields a satisfying result in a use case of clinical decision making.
