Abstract:Knowledge of the dielectric properties of commodities and insect pests is important indeveloping thermal treatments for postharvest insect control based on radio frequency (RF) andmicrowave energy. The dielectric properties of five tropical fruits along with four associated insectpests were measured between 1 MHz and 1800 MHz using an open-ended coaxial-line probetechnique and at temperatures between 20 and 60C. The dielectric loss factor of the tropical fruitsand insects decreased with increasing frequency at constant temperatures. The loss factor of thefruits and the insects increased almost linearly with increasing temperature at 27 MHz radiofrequency, but remained in a small range at 915 MHz microwave frequency. Both the dielectricconstant and the loss factor of avocado appeared the maximum values, especially at 27 MHz. Thesame magnitude of the dielectric loss factor of insects with the tropical fruits suggested that thedifferential heating was unlikely to occur in RF and microwave systems. The direct measurement ofelectrical conductivity made a good estimation of the loss factor at 27 MHz and a matched salinesolution might be used to improve heating uniformity of tropical fruits when subjected to RF systems.
