Abstract:Squeezed light sources, featuring significant degrees of squeezing, flexible time-frequency attributes, and a compact salable form factor, serve as crucial building blocks in an expanding range of applications, spanning from quantum computing to quantum sensing and communications. In this study, we introduce and demonstrate a novel approach to generating squeezed light that exclusively employs standard telecommunication fiber-optic components. The technique leverages the entanglement properties of spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) to generate high squeezing with flexible time-frequency properties. Notably, a record squeezing of 7.5 \(\pm\)0.1 dB is measured within an all-fiber, all-guided-wave platform. The entanglement-assisted squeezing methodology empowers the attainment of squeezing for arbitrary time-frequency modes within the SFWM phase-matching bandwidth, extending beyond coherent laser modes, for the first time. In particular, we measured 5.1 dB and 1.1 dB squeezing on partially coherent and chaotic time-frequency modes that are defined by randomly modulated laser sources and filtered amplified spontaneous emission light, respectively.

Abstract:This paper reviews quantum spin squeezing, which characterizes the sensitivity of a state with respect to SU(2) rotations, and is significant for both entanglement detection and high-precision metrology. We first present various definitions of spin squeezing parameters, explain their origin and properties for typical states, and then discuss spin-squeezed states produced with nonlinear twisting Hamiltonians. Afterward, we explain pairwise correlations and entanglement in spin-squeezed states, as well as the relations between spin squeezing and quantum Fisher information, where the latter plays a central role in quantum metrology. We also review the applications of spin squeezing for detecting quantum chaos and quantum phase transitions, as well as the influence of decoherence on spin squeezing. Finally, we review several experimental realizations of spin squeezing, as well as their corresponding theoretical backgrounds, including: producing spin-squeezed states via particle collisions in Bose–Einstein condensates, transferring photon squeezing to atomic ensembles, and generating spin squeezing via quantum non-demolition measurements.

Abstract:Squeezed light is a particularly useful quantum resource, which finds broad applications in quantum information processing, quantum metrology and sensing, and biological measurements. It has been successfully generated in various physical systems. Here we introduce a new mechanism and system to produce squeezed light using an exciton-phonon cavity-QED system. Specifically, we adopt a semiconductor microcavity embedded with a quantum well, which supports both linear and nonlinear interactions among excitons, phonons, and cavity photons. We show that the strong exciton-phonon nonlinear interaction can induce a quadrature-squeezed cavity output field, and reveal an important role of the exciton-photon coupling in engineering the squeezing spectrum and improving the robustness of the squeezing against thermal noise. Our results indicate that room-temperature squeezing of light is possible for materials with high exciton binding energy.

Abstract:Intensity squeezing-i.e., photon number fluctuations below the shot-noise limit-is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. However, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting, and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fiber-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar system. We detect pulsed single-photon streams with 22.6% system efficiency, which show sub-shot-noise intensity fluctuation with an intensity squeezing of 0.59 dB. We estimate a corrected squeezing of 3.29 dB at the first lens. The observed intensity squeezing provides the last piece of the fundamental picture of resonance fluorescence, which can be used as a new standard for optical radiation and in scalable quantum metrology with indistinguishable single photons.

Abstract:Squeezed states of the optical field were theoretically described in the early 1970s and first observed in the mid 1980s. The measured photon number of a squeezed state is correlated with the measured photon numbers of all other squeezed states of the same ensemble, providing sub-Poissonian statistics. Today all gravitational-wave observatories use squeezed light as the cost-efficient alternative to further scaling up the light power. This user application of quantum correlations was made possible through dedicated research and development of squeezed light between 2002 and 2010.

Abstract:The property of N-th power X-squeezing in a kind of intensity asymmetrical multi mode superposition state light field with the superposition of distinguishable two quantum state is firstly studied in detail by using of the general theory of generalized nonlinear difference squeezing in multi mode radiation field. It is found that the kind of multi mode superposition state light field mentioned above presents generalized nonlinear difference-squeezing effect (that is N-th power X-squeezing effect) that changes periodically if some conditions are satisfied respectively by the initial phase of each mode, or by the initial phase difference between the two components, or by photons of each mode, or by squeezing power. By further analysis demonstrate, it is demonstrated that the properties of N-th power X-squeezing in the first and second kind of multi mode superposition state light field are only particular examples of the discussion in this paper under certain conditions.
Squeezed states of light after high-harmonic generation in excited atomic systems

Abstract:High-harmonic generation (HHG) has recently emerged as a promising method for generating non-classical states of light with frequencies spanning from the infrared up to the extreme ultraviolet regime. In this work, we theoretically investigate the generation of squeezed states of light through HHG processes in atomic systems that had been initially driven to their first excited state. Our study reveals significant single-mode squeezing in both the driving field and low-order harmonic modes. Additionally, we characterize two-mode squeezing features in the generated states, both between fundamental and harmonic modes, and among the harmonic modes themselves. Using these correlations, we demonstrate the generation of optical Schrödinger kitten states through heralding measurements, specifically via photon subtraction in one of the modes influenced by two-mode squeezing.

Efficient and Lasting Squeezed Light Due to Constructive Two-Photon Interference

Abstract:We demonstrate numerically that efficient and lasting squeezed light can be achieved due to a constructive two-photon interference. Even if large phase fluctuations occur, the dispersion in one of the two quadrature components of the light field can still be reduced below the standard quantum limit set by the symmetric distribution of the vacuum state. Experimental observation of squeezed light in this system is possible by generalizing the recent techniques of Ou's group [L. J. Lu and Z. Y. Ou, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 023601 (2002)].

Abstract:Utilized the general theory of multimode squeezed state, the squeezing properties of a new kind of multimode superposition state which composed by multimode functional coherent state and multimode functional imaginary coherent state is studied, and it is found that, when the products of sum-number of cavity-modes and squeezing number is an even number, the state can present equal-power sum squeezing effect in some special equal-phase-surface; The spatial distribution of classical intensity of the light-field has a direct influence upon the squeezed degree and the squeezed depth of generalized nonlinear equal-power sum-squeezing of the state ,and with the change of the spatial distribution of classical intensity of each mode, the squeezed degree and the squeezed depth of each mode of the state are anisotropic in spatial distribution.

Abstract:The properties of equal-higher-power difference squeezing of multimode entangled state light - field composed of multimode complex conjugate coherent state, multimode complex conjugate imaginary coherent state and multimode vacuum state are studied by utilizing the multimode squeezing theory in decoherence. The results show that when some fixed conditions are satisfied the mixed entangled state light - field mentioned above not only has the equal - higher - power difference squeezing in one of the quadratures but also displays the similar effects in the quadratures simultaneously, that is called two - sided difference squeezing. This is a newly physical phenomenon which contradicts the principle of uncertainty.

Abstract:Kth-power amplitude squeezing (KPAS) is introduced and examined in the nonlinear-harmonic-oscillator model and the Jaynes-Cummings model with an intensity coupling. We discover that, in these two cases, the long-time behavior of KPAS (k less-than-or-equal-to 4) for the strong initial field periodically displays a collapse-revival-valley and squeezed collapse-revival phenomenon, respectively. For a nonclassical state, the relation between KPAS and ordinary squeezing, Hong-Mandel squeezing, and antibunching is investigated. The results show that KPAS is another intrinsic and independent nonclassical effect inequivalent to the last three.

Abstract:Based on the state superposition principle of quantum mechanics,asymmetrical multimode functional superposition state light field with the superposition of four quantum states is constructed.By using multimode squeezing state theory,this paper makes a detailed study of the unequal-power higher-power amplitude-squeezing of generalized magnetic-field of 4MFSS light field in medium and it is found that 1) under certain conditions,the generalized magnetic-field of 4MFSS light field shows periodical generalized nonlinear unequal-power higher-power amplitude-squeezing;2) the Nj-th power higher-power amplitude-squeezing shown in the generalized magnetic-field of 4MFSS light field is obviously affected by the coefficient of the gain medium or of the absorption medium.In the gain medium,when the light field spreading distance becomes farther,the extent,range and effect of Nj-th power higher-power amplitude-squeezing are intensified;in the absorption medium,when the light field spreading distance becomes farther,the extent,range and effect of Nj-th power higher-power amplitude-squeezing are decreased.

Abstract:Squeezed optical fields are a powerful resource for a variety of investigations in basic research and technology. However, the generation of intense squeezed light is challenging. Here, we show that intense squeezed light can be produced using strongly laser driven atoms and the so far unrelated process of high harmonic generation. We demonstrate that when the intensity of the driving field significantly depletes the ground state of the atoms, leading to dipole moment correlations, the quantum state of the driving field and the generated high harmonics are entangled and squeezed. Furthermore, we analyze how the resulting quadrature squeezing of the fundamental laser mode after the interaction can be controlled. Abstract:Using the Lie-algebraic approach, we develop the theory of generation of squeezed states of light in nonstationary parametric processes of the light interaction with a medium with the quadratic and quartic nonlinearities. The exact solution for the variance of the quadrature component of the field strength is obtained in the case of the quadratic parametric process with the SU (1, 1) dynamical symmetry. We show that decay of the field mode in this processes may have strong impact on squeezing. The solution for the standard deviation of the field strength in the case of the quartic parametric process with the approximated dynamical symmetry is obtained in the first order of smallness with respect to the nonlinearity parameter.

Fluctuations-Induced Quantum Radiation and Reaction from an Atom in a Squeezed Quantum Field

Abstract:In this third of a series on quantum radiation, we explore the feasibility of using the memories kept in a quantum field to decipher certain information about the early universe. As a model study, we let a massless quantum field be subjected to a parametric process for a finite time interval such that the mode frequency of the field transits from one constant value to another. This configuration mimics a statically-bounded universe, but not a continuously evolving one. The field squeezed by this process should contain information of the process itself. If an atom is coupled to the field after the parametric process, its response will depend on the squeezing, and any quantum radiation emitted by the atom will carry this information away so that an observer at a much later time may still identify it. Our analyses show that 1) a remote observer cannot measure the generated squeezing via the radiation energy flux from the atom because the net radiation energy flux is canceled. However, 2) there is a chance to identify squeezing by measuring the constant radiation energy density at late times. The only restriction is that this energy density is of the near-field nature. The second part of this paper focuses on 3) the dependence of squeezing on the functional form of the parametric process. Via several examples we demonstrate that the behavior of squeezing reflect essential properties of the parametric process. In fact, striking features may show up in complicated processes involving various scales. These analyses allow us to establish the connection between properties of a squeezed quantum field and the parametric process which does the squeezing. Therefore, 4) one can construct templates to reconstitute the unknown parametric processes from the data of measurable quantities subjected to squeezing. In a sequel paper these results will be applied to a study of quantum radiations in cosmology.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum statistics of the fields produced in second harmonic generation when photon number squeezed light is used as input. It is found that the squeezed properties of the pump beam can be transferred to a certain extent to the second harmonic beam. The normalized photon fluctuations, or Fano factors, of the fundamental and second harmonic output fields are derived for various values of the interaction parameters.

Abstract:By virtue of the Weyl-Wigner quantization scheme, we derive the explicit form of the squeezing-enhanced state without disentangling the generalized squeezing operator exp[-i lambda/2 (Q(2)e(r) - e(-r) P-2)], where Q and P are two quadratures of the light field; this approach is convenient and concise. By virtue of the Weyl-ordering invariance under similar transformations, the Wigner function of the squeezing-enhanced state is derived and its figure is depicted, which clearly exhibits the squeezing enhancement.
The Unequal-Power Higher-Power Difference Squeezing in the Multimode Schr(o)dinger-cat State Entangled Light Field with Three Macroscopically Distinguishable Quantum States Superposition

Abstract:By utilizing the general theory of multimode squeezed states, the effects of generalized nonlinear unequal-power higher-power difference squeezing in the multimode Schrodinger-cat state entangled light field is studied, that is formed by the linear superposition of three macroscopical distinguishable quantum states named the multimode complex conjugate coherent state, multimode complex conjugate imaginary coherent state and multimode vacuum state. It is found that 1) the difference squeezing of the cat state entangled light field is independent of its vacuum state component; 2) in some cases, the two quadrature phase components of this cat state entangled light field present unequal-power higher-power difference squeezing properties respectively; 3)under some other conditions, the difference squeezing effects of two quadrature phase components of the state mentioned above cart exist at the same time. The two preceding results stated above are in conformity with the uncertainty principle, but the last is not. It is called "two-sided difference squeezing" phenomenon and could be very useful in the application of squeezed light on light quanta communication.
