Abstract:We develop a linearized boundary control method for the inverse boundary value problem of determining a potential in the acoustic wave equation from the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. When the linearization is at the zero potential, we derive a reconstruction formula based on the boundary control method and prove that it is of Lipschitz-type stability. When the linearization is at a nonzero potential, we prove that the problem is of Hölder-type stability. The proposed reconstruction formula is implemented and evaluated using several numerical experiments to validate its feasibility.

Abstract:This work is devoted to determine appropriate domain and range of the forward map from the coefficients to the solutions of the multi-dimensional wave equation for which the forward map attains certain regularity properties. The first result concerns an explicit upper bound of its linearization or formal derivative and the properties of the coefficients on which the bound depends. In view of results for the smooth coefficient case, the estimate is optimal. We then present recent results on continuity and differentiability of the forward map as well as continuity of the linearized forward map. Information concerning regularity properties of the forward map is indispensable in the study of the inverse problem via smooth optimization methods. The usefulness of our results and some directions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:The article explores the acoustic equations in inhomogeneous media and the linearized shallow water equations. Two methods for integrating these equations are proposed. The first method is based on the of the Laplace cascade method, while the second involves reducing two-dimensional and three-dimensional models to the wave equation. In the case of plane waves, solutions to some equations depending on two arbitrary functions are obtained. In the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, equations that can be reduced to equations with constant coefficients are found.

Abstract:In this work we present a unified error analysis for abstract space discretizations of wave-type equations with nonlinear quasi-monotone operators. This yields an error bound in terms of discretization and interpolation errors that can be applied to various equations and space discretizations fitting in the abstract setting. We use the unified error analysis to prove novel convergence rates for a non-conforming finite element space discretization of wave equations with nonlinear acoustic boundary conditions and illustrate the error bound by a numerical experiment.

Abstract:We consider a strongly damped wave equation on compact manifolds, both with and without boundaries, and formulate the corresponding inverse problems. For closed manifolds, we prove that the metric can be uniquely determined, up to an isometry, from the knowledge of the source-to-solution map. Similarly, for manifolds with boundaries, we prove that the metric can be uniquely determined, up to an isometry, from partial knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The key point is to retrieve the spectral information of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, from the Laplace transform of the measurements. Further we show that the metric can be determined up to an isometry, using a single measurement in both scenarios.

Linearized Boundary Control Method for Density Reconstruction in Acoustic Wave Equations

Abstract:We develop a linearized boundary control method for the inverse boundary value problem of determining a density in the acoustic wave equation. The objective is to reconstruct an unknown perturbation in a known background density from the linearized Neumann-to-Dirichlet map. A key ingredient in the derivation is a linearized Blagovescenskii's identity with a free parameter. When the linearization is at a constant background density, we derive two reconstructive algorithms with stability estimates based on the boundary control method. When the linearization is at a non-constant background density, we establish an increasing stability estimate for the recovery of the density perturbation. The proposed reconstruction algorithms are implemented and validated with several numerical experiments to demonstrate the feasibility.

Abstract:Variational problem for irrotational, incompressible inviseid fluid in finite water depth is considered. Based on the variational principle, a special solution of the problem is presented under the assumption that the dispersion μ and the nonlinearity ε satisfied ε=O(μ2) as the Lagrange function is expanded up toO(μ8). It is shown that the elevation of the free surface should be expanded to μ4 order to ensure the Lagrange function is in μ8 order. Comparison the nonlinear free surface profiles obtained from the solution with the corresponding ones obtained from linear solutions showed that the wave crest of the nonlinear wave is steepened but the trough is flattened compared to the linear wave as expected.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the semilinear wave equations with the inverse-square potential. By transferring the original equation to a "fractional dimensional" wave equation and analyzing the properties of its fundamental solution, we establish a long-time existence result, for sufficiently small, spherically symmetric initial data. Together with the previously known blow-up result, we determine the critical exponent which divides the global existence and finite time blow-up. Moreover, the sharp lower bounds of the lifespan are obtained, except for certain borderline case. In addition, our technology allows us to handle an extreme case for the potential, which has hardly been discussed in literature.

Abstract:We consider the problem of recovering a nonlinear potential function in a nonlinear Schrödinger equation on transversally anisotropic manifolds from the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at a large wavenumber. By calibrating the complex geometric optics (CGO) solutions according to the wavenumber, we prove the increasing stability of recovering the coefficient of a cubic term as the wavenumber becomes large.

Abstract:This article is devoted to forward and inverse problems associated with time-independent semilinear nonlocal wave equations. We first establish comprehensive well-posedness results for some semilinear nonlocal wave equations. The main challenge is due to the low regularity of the solutions of linear nonlocal wave equations. We then turn to an inverse problem of recovering the nonlinearity of the equation. More precisely, we show that the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann map uniquely determines homogeneous nonlinearities of the form $f(x,u)$ under certain growth conditions. On the other hand, we also prove that initial data can be determined by using passive measurements under certain nonlinearity conditions. The main tools used for the inverse problem are the unique continuation principle of the fractional Laplacian and a Runge approximation property. The results hold for any spatial dimension $n\in \N$.

Abstract:We consider an undetermined coefficient inverse problem for a nonlinear partial differential equation describing high intensity ultrasound propagation as widely used in medical imaging and therapy. The usual nonlinear term in the standard model using the Westervelt equation in pressure formulation is of the form $p p_t$. However, this should be considered as a low order approximation to a more complex physical model where higher order terms will be required. Here we assume a more general case where the form taken is $f(p)\,p_t$ and $f$ is unknown and must be recovered from data measurements. Corresponding to the typical measurement setup, the overposed data consists of time trace observations of the acoustic pressure at a single point or on a one dimensional set $\Sigma$ representing the receiving transducer array at a fixed time. Additionally to an analysis of well-posedness of the resulting {\sc pde}, we show injectivity of the linearized forward map from $f$ to the overposed data and use this as motivation for several iterative schemes to recover $f$. Numerical simulations will also be shown to illustrate the efficiency of the methods.

Abstract:The invariant imbedding procedure with a modified planar wave-splitting process is applied to the dissipative wave equation for a smooth stratified medium. The imbedding equations for R0 and R2, respectively the zeroth and second moments of the kernel of the reflection operator, are obtained. A linearization of the nonlinear imbedding equation for R0 is given, which greatly simplifies the numerical procedure and improves the speed one order in the direct and inverse problems. Numerical results are given for the direct problem, and for the inverse problem where the zeroth and second transverse moments of the reflection data are given on one side.

Abstract:The exact solutions to the system of equations of the linear theory of shallow water that represent travelling waves with some specific properties on the time propagation interval are discussed. These solutions are infinite when approaching the shore and finite when leaving for deep water. The solutions are obtained by reducing one-dimensional equations of shallow water to the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation with negative integer coefficient ahead of the lower derivative. An analysis of the wave field dynamics is carried out. It is shown that the shape of a wave approaching the shore will be differentiated a certain number of times. This is illustrated by a number of examples. When the wave moves away from the shore, its profile is integrated. The solutions obtained within the framework of linear theory are valid only on a finite interval of variation in the depth.

Abstract:A rarely exploited advantage of time-domain boundary integral equations compared to their frequency counterparts is that they can be used to treat certain nonlinear problems. In this work we investigate the scattering of acoustic waves by a bounded obstacle with a nonlinear impedance boundary condition. We describe a boundary integral formulation of the problem and prove without any smoothness assumptions on the solution the convergence of a full discretization: Galerkin in space and convolution quadrature in time. If the solution is sufficiently regular, we prove that the discrete method converges at optimal rates. Numerical evidence in 3D supports the theory.

Abstract:We consider the ultrasound imaging problem governed by a nonlinear wave equation of Westervelt type with variable wave speed. We show that the coefficient of nonlinearity can be recovered uniquely from knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Our proof is based on a second order linearization and the use of Gaussian beam solutions to reduce the problem to the inversion of a weighted geodesic ray transform. We propose an inversion algorithm and report the results of a numerical implementation to solve the nonlinear ultrasound imaging problem in a transmission setting in the frequency domain.

Abstract:We consider an inverse problem of recovering a potential associated to a semi-linear wave equation with a quadratic nonlinearity in $1 + 1$ dimensions. We develop a numerical scheme to determine the potential from a noisy Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the lateral boundary. The scheme is based on the recent higher order linearization method [20]. We also present an approach to numerically estimating two-dimensional derivatives of noisy data via Tikhonov regularization. The methods are tested using synthetic noisy measurements of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. Various examples of reconstructions of the potential functions are given.

Abstract:We propose and study several inverse problems associated with the nonlinear progressive waves that arise in infrasonic inversions. The nonlinear progressive equation (NPE) is of a quasilinear form $\partial_t^2 u=\Delta f(x, u)$ with $f(x, u)=c_1(x) u+c_2(x) u^n$, $n\geq 2$, and can be derived from the hyperbolic system of conservation laws associated with the Euler equations. We establish unique identifiability results in determining $f(x, u)$ as well as the associated initial data by the boundary measurement. Our analysis relies on high-order linearisation and construction of proper Gaussian beam solutions for the underlying wave equations. In addition to its theoretical interest, we connect our study to applications of practical importance in infrasound waveform inversion.

Abstract:We introduce in this document a direct method allowing to solve numerically inverse type problems for linear hyperbolic equations. We first consider the reconstruction of the full solution of the wave equation posed in $\Omega\times (0,T)$ - $\Omega$ a bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$ - from a partial distributed observation. We employ a least-squares technique and minimize the $L^2$-norm of the distance from the observation to any solution. Taking the hyperbolic equation as the main constraint of the problem, the optimality conditions are reduced to a mixed formulation involving both the state to reconstruct and a Lagrange multiplier. Under usual geometric optic conditions, we show the well-posedness of this mixed formulation (in particular the inf-sup condition) and then introduce a numerical approximation based on space-time finite elements discretization. We prove the strong convergence of the approximation and then discussed several examples for $N=1$ and $N=2$. The problem of the reconstruction of both the state and the source term is also addressed.

Well-posedness and potential-based formulation for the propagation of hydro-acoustic waves and tsunamis

Abstract:We study a linear model for the propagation of hydro-acoustic waves and tsunami in a stratified free-surface ocean. A formulation was previously obtained by linearizing the compressible Euler equations. The new formulation is obtained by studying the functional spaces and operators associated to the model. The mathematical study of this new formulation is easier and the discretization is also more efficient than for the previous formulation. We prove that both formulations are well posed and show that the solution to the first formulation can be obtained from the solution to the second. Finally, the formulations are discretized using a spectral element method, and we simulate tsunamis generation from submarine earthquakes and landslides.
