Abstract:Light emission from gold nanoparticles was investigated with ultra-narrow-band notch filters to obtain the complete spectral shape. The anti-Stokes emission band was observed at all excitation wavelengths. The spectral shape of the anti-Stokes emission could be well fitted by a Fermi–Dirac-like line shape, while the spectral profile of the Stokes emission could be fitted by a Lorentzian line shape. The electron distribution and local surface plasmon resonance jointly determined the spectral shape. Additionally, we found that the anti-Stokes emission intensity increased more rapidly compared with that of the Stokes emission as illumination power was increased. This phenomenon can be understood from the temperature dependence of the electron distribution owing to photothermal effects.

Abstract:We demonstrate, experimentally and theoretically, that the photon emission from gold nanorods can be viewed as a Purcell effect enhanced radiative recombination of hot carriers. By correlating the single-particle photoluminescence spectra and quantum yields of gold nanorods measured for five different excitation wavelengths and varied excitation powers, we illustrate the effects of hot carrier distributions evolving through interband and intraband transitions and the photonic density of states on the nanorod photoluminescence. Our model, using only one fixed input parameter, describes quantitatively both emission from interband recombination and the main photoluminescence peak coinciding with the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance.

Abstract:The mechanism for the photoluminescence (PL) emission from gold nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention for many years. However, there is an important gap between small nanoclusters (similar to 2 nm) and larger plasmonic particles (similar to 50 nm). In this work, using defocused imaging technique, we investigate the PL properties of gold nanospheres (15-20 nm in diameter) on a single particle level. Photoblinking and photobleaching phenomena are both observed. We notice that although these nanospheres can support surface plasmon resonance at similar to 515 nm, they emit at similar to 630 nm (excited by 532 nm), which is obviously plasmon-independent. The observed defocused images (DIs) exhibit isotropy first and then either transform into anisotropy or vanish rapidly. Surprisingly, the Dls can change their emission pattern within one single nanosphere during the tracing time. All these PL properties suggest a multiple-dipole emission model. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that these nanospheres are polycrystalline containing multiple small crystal domains (similar to 3 nm). We believe that these small domains divide the particle into different clusters and give rise to the photoblinking behavior and rotary DIs. The presented PL mechanism links gold nanoclusters and single-crystal nanorods, which could be helpful in understanding the origins of photoblinking and the luminescent properties from metallic nanoparticles. In addition, these water-soluble gold nanospheres provide new opportunities for biological labels and light-emitting sources in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Anti-Stokes one-photon luminescence from a single gold nanorod is experimentally investigated. The anti-Stokes emission of gold nanorods is enhanced and strongly modulated by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). It is found that the polarization dependence of the anti-Stokes emission is in strong correlation with that of the Stokes emission. Further experiments provide evidence that LSPR significantly enhanced both excitation and emission processes. Moreover, the line shape of the anti-Stokes emission is dependent on the surface temperature, which is related to the distribution of free electrons near the Fermi level. This discovery provides an effective method in principle to probe localized temperature at nanoscale dimension. Here, the reported results about the anti-Stokes emission provide more understanding for the photoemission process from the plasmonic nanostructures.

Abstract:In experiments, we demonstrated that luminescence quantum yield of single gold nanorods illuminated by continuous wave laser at wavelength of 532 nm depends on the excitation polarization, while that excited by 633 nm laser does not. The electrons in sp-band dominates the luminescence process when the 633 nm laser is applied, resulting in a constant quantum yield under different excitation polarizations. When the 532 nm laser is applied, both the electrons in d-band (interband transition) and sp-band (surface plasmon) involve in the luminescence process. The variation of quantum yield by the 532 nm laser is resulted from different efficiency of d-band interband transition and sp-band plasmon conversion into luminescence. Furthermore, we found that plasmon modes coupling effect can modulate strongly the plasmon emission efficiency by comparing the luminescence of two sets of the nanorods with different size. And smaller size GNRs often results in higher quantum yield of interband transition. These findings make a step to understand the luminescence process of plasmonic nanostructures and point out a rule to control it through plasmon mode coupling effect.

Abstract:An individual gold nanorod as an optical antenna to modulate single-molecule fluorescence spontaneous emission behaviors is investigated theoretically. 2D and 3D numerical finite-difference time-domain methods are implemented to investigate changes in the excitation rate, spontaneous emission rate, quantum efficiency, and emission spectral shape as functions of the separation between the emitter and nanorod. Our simulations reveal that the 3D relative configuration between the gold. nanorod and the single dipole definitely affects the quantum efficiency and emission spectral shape. The orientation of the dipole and the polarization of the excitation light are also investigated to clarify the polarization dependence of the plasmonic-enhanced fluorescence. Furthermore, we calculate the modified quantum efficiency and emission spectral shape of a single Cy5 dye molecule in the vicinity of a single gold nanorod taking experimental requirements into account.
Simultaneous Excitation and Emission Enhancement of Fluorescence Assisted by Double Plasmon Modes of Gold Nanorods

Abstract:Here we propose a scheme utilizing the double plasmon modes of gold nanorod (GNR) to efficiently enhance the fluorescence of surrounding emitters. The transversal and longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (TSPR and LSPR, respectively) modes of GNR are simultaneously utilized to enhance the excitation and emission efficiency, respectively. To demonstrate the idea, GNRs coated with an Oxazine-725 dye molecule-doped silica shell are employed. For comparison, gold nanospheres with the same shell are also studied, of which the single plasmon resonance mode matches only with the excitation wavelength of Oxazine-725. The experimental results, in agreement with theoretical simulations using the discrete dipole approximation method, successfully demonstrate the efficient excitation and emission enhancement of fluorescence assisted by the double SPRs of GNRs.

Abstract:We report the observation of the undocumented visible one-photon photoluminescence (PL) of single silver nanorods excited by 532 and 633 nm continuous wave lasers with single-nanoparticle spectroscopy. We attribute the PL of silver nanorods to the intraband transition excited hot electron radiative decay. The PL of silver nanorods closely resembles the corresponding LSPR scattering spectrum, and both are dependent on their aspect ratio. The good correlation between the quantitative PL intensity and the absorption cross section at the excitation wavelength of each nanorod leads to an aspect ratio independent PL quantum yield. The PL quantum yield of silver nanorods is similar to that of gold nanorods (10(-6)), indicating an efficient intraband excitation of hot electrons. The understanding of the PL mechanism of Ag nanorods points to the high-energy nature of the hot electrons excited via intraband transition, which has important indications in utilizing hot electrons for energy harvesting and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Gold nanorod has generated great research interest due to its tunable longitudinal plasmon resonance. However, little progress has been made in the understanding of the effect. A major reason is that, except for metallic spheres and ellipsoids, the interaction between light and nanoparticles is generally insoluble. In this paper, a new scheme has been proposed to study the plasmon resonance of gold nanorod, in which the nanorod is modeled as an LC circuit with an inductance and a capacitance. The obtained resonance wavelength is dependent on not only aspect ratio but also rod radius, suggesting the importance of self-inductance and the breakdown of linear scaling. Moreover, the cross sections for light scattering and absorption have been deduced analytically, giving rise to a Lorentzian line-shape for the extinction spectrum. The result provides us with new insight into the phenomenon.

Abstract:Ultrafast laser irradiation of single gold nanorods of various sizes is simulated for the investigation of the vibrations of the nanorods. The investigation uses a hybrid method that couples molecular dynamics (MD) with the two-temperature model (TTM). The extensional frequencies of the single gold nanorods are extracted from the atomic trajectories obtained by the MD simulations. In combination with continuum elasticity, the elastic moduli of the single gold nanorods are determined, along with the predicted extensional frequencies of the nanorods. It is shown that as the nanorod width increases, the modulus of the single gold nanorods also increases and approaches that of bulk gold. The notable softening of the elastic modulus is clearly shown for the smaller nanorods with widths of ∼8 and ∼12 nm.

Abstract:Fluorescent gold nanoparticles with high quantum yield are highly desirable for optical imaging in the fields of biology and materials science. We investigate the one-photon photoluminescence (PL) properties of individual gold nanobipyramids (GNBs) and find they are analogous to those of the extensively studied gold nanorods (GNRs). By combining PL and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements with discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulations, we obtain the PL quantum yield of single GNRs and GNBs. Compared to GNRs in the similar surface plasmon resonance range, the PL quantum yield of GNBs is found to be doubled. The stronger field intensity around GNBs can explain their higher PL quantum yields. Our research would provide deeper understanding of the mechanism of PL from gold nanoparticles as well as be beneficial for finding out optical imaging labels with high contrast.

Abstract:Growth processes of single gold nanorods (AuNRs) on a glass coverslip surface were monitored in situ via photoluminescence and dark-field scattering spectroscopy. We found that the growth of gold nanorod (AuNR) was light driven and the growth rate was dependent on the excitation light power and polarization. Specifically, the AuNRs can regrow to a larger size upon intense light irradiation, even if the AuNRs have reached an equilibrium state in original growth solution. Furthermore, the resonance wavelength shift during the regrowth was found to be reversible by switching on or off the light illumination. A plausible explanation for such light driven phenomenon could be due to photothermal effects, in which plasmon-induced hot electrons result in Au ions being reduced more easily upon light illumination. These findings suggest a flexible method to control AuNRs synthesis and contribute understanding to plasmon-mediated metal nanoparticle synthesis at the single nanoparticle level.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation of a gold nanorod has been simulated by a method that couples two-temperature model into molecular dynamics. Numerical results show that the surface premelting occurs prior to the initiation of planar defect and propagates from the surface layer into the inside of nanorod. Pressure relaxation leads to high-frequency temperature oscillation and two-way transformation between fcc and disordered atoms produced by the dynamic stresses. Partial dislocation cores are initiated on the crystal surfaces due to high stresses, and then noticeable planar defects including stacking faults and twin boundaries on {111} close-packed planes are developed. Finally, only parallel twin boundaries are present in the nanorod, showing favorable agreement with the experimental observation.

Abstract:The two-photon luminescence (TPL) of gold nanoparticles (NP) was shown to result from the excitation of hot carriers, the plasmonic NP resonances playing an important role both for plasmon enhanced absorption and plasmon enhanced emission. However, the exact parameters enabling to control or optimize the NP nonlinear luminescence still need to be understood in detail. In this paper, we report the two-photon excited photoluminescence of single gold nanorods exhibiting identical aspect ratio (close to 4) and thus identical plasmonic resonances, but increasing volumes V (707 <V< 160 103 nm3 i.e. rod diameters varying between 6 and 40 nm). The two-photon luminescence intensity of a high number of colloidal nanorods was investigated at the single object level, combining polarization resolved TPL and simultaneously acquired topography. Non-monotonic TPL variations are evidenced, nanorods with an intermediate size (diameter around 10 nanometers) exhibiting the highest TPL signal intensity. A model is proposed considering both the local field enhancement effects at the NP and the size-dependent electron thermalization processes. BEM (Boundary Elements Method) simulations are used to compute the fields at both the transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonance. A good fitting of the experimental data is obtained considering integration of the fields over the whole the NP volume.

Abstract:One-dimensional nanomaterials have attracted great interest in both fundamental research and technological applications because they can function as device elements and be used to effectively generate, guide, and detect light. Here we report a gold nanorod-enhanced light emission in quantum-dot-doped polymer nanofibers. By incorporating gold nanorods into quantum-dot-doped polymer nanofiber, a 67% increment in 600 nm red light emission efficiency was obtained with an extinction coefficient of 100 cm(-1), a low excitation power operation of 100 nW, and a 100 min increment in photostability.

Abstract:Luminescence quantum yields (QYs) of gold nanoparticles including nanorods, nanobipyramids and nanospheres are measured elaborately at a single nanoparticle level with different excitation wavelengths. It is found that the QYs of the nanostructures are essentially dependent on the excitation wavelength. The QY is higher when the excitation wavelength is blue-detuned and close to the nanoparticles' surface plasmon resonance peak. A phenomenological model based on the plasmonic resonator concept is proposed to understand the experimental findings. The excitation wavelength dependent QY is attributed to the wavelength dependent coupling efficiency between the free electron oscillation and the intrinsic plasmon resonant radiative mode. These studies should contribute to the understanding of one-photon luminescence from metallic nanostructures and plasmonic surface enhanced spectroscopy.
