Abstract:In this study, cross-linked polystyrene microspheres (PS) with high porosity were synthesized via a suspension polymerization method. A series of menthol@polystyrene microsphere composites were synthesized via a novel "in-pore crystallization" strategy by employing porous PS microspheres as the carrier. The release behavior of Menthol under different temperature was studied by a hot-air sweeping method, and it was found to be fitted with the law of biphase kinetics. Compared to the samples obtained via mechanically blending, the present supported composites display a controlled release of menthol in a rather broad temperature range (30 similar to 80 degrees C). This kind of new preparation technology is expected to be useful for designing novel high-performance menthol-based products.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (OMS) possess high specific surface areas, large pore volume, open channel structure, easily tunable surface functionalities, and good biocompatibility. They have great potential for application in various fields, such as drug delivery, enzyme immobilization, and catalysis. In this study, ordered mesoporous silica microspheres with large pore sizes were synthesized via a non-polar solvent assisted co-assembly method in a water-n-hexane biliquid solution. The obtained mesoporous silica microspheres possess large pore size of 6.9 nm and high surface area of 615 m(2)/g. Through a nanocasting method, L-menthol was successfully loaded into the mesopores. Through an interface polymerization of dopamine, polydopamine (PDA) was deposited on the external surface of the composite microspheres. By monitoring the weight change of the composite microspheres during treatment by hot air flow, the menthol release behavior was evaluated. As a result of the presence of permeable PDA in shell, the composite microspheres were found to release L-menthol in a controllable way, especially at an appropriate temperature of about 50 degrees C. This study provides an important primary guideline for potential applications of mesoporous silica functionalized with PDA in bio-medicine, adsorption and separation, and so on.

Abstract:Research embedding rate,the apparent structure,particle size distributing and release of the menthol microcapsule were researched.The pattern character of menthol microcapsule was observed by optical microscope and SEM,particle size distribution of microcapsules was menstruated by laser intensity analyzer,the menthol microcapsule content change on the different temperatures conditions was menstruated by 4-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde to determinate and investigate its release characteristics.Menthol microcapsule surface was round,dense,concentrated in the particle size distribution between 5.5～10.87 μm,it could be better dispersed in 70% ethanol.At 25 ℃ and 45 ℃,it have significant difference release(p<0.05) between the encapsulated menthol and not embedding menthol.

Abstract:Purely siliceous MCM 41 with a narrow pore-size distribution , different pore size , high surface area was synthesized . As prepared , calcined and catalytically tested MCM 41 materials have been comprehensively characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption at 77K and 129Xe NMR . By adding mesitylene during the synthesis , the pore size of MCM 41 was enlarged to 5.2nm. The chemical shift in 129Xe NMR spectroscopy of adsorbed xenon indicates that the MCM 41 is one dimensional pore channels .

Abstract:MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve was synthesized by microwave radiation method. The crystallization, crystalline morphology and stability of MCM-41 were investigated by means of XRD, SEM, IR, NMR and adsorption technique. The results showed that the induction period is very short, the crystallization rate is very high, and there is no crystalline conversion during the crystallization process. It was also found that MCM-41 synthesized in microwave condition had lower adsorption capacity but better ability for resisting heat, hydrothermal, acid and base treatment.

Abstract:Porous materials with high adsorption capacity for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been a hot topic in the zeolite field, and preparing a silica-based material suitable for the removal of VOCs with different molecular sizes is still challenging. Here, a novel microporous silica-based material (MIS) having abundant micropores (∼0.278 cm3/g) and wide range of pore sizes (0.5–2.0 nm) was successfully obtained via a room-temperature synthesis route by using tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH). The pore structure and accessibility could be finely modulated by tuning the interaction between TBAOH and silica precursors based on intelligent gravimetric analyzer and hyperpolarized 129Xe NMR spectra results. The optimized MIS with open micropores exhibited a much higher m-xylene adsorption capacity (114 mg/g) than conventional adsorbents and no decrease of adsorption capacity in the fourth adsorption–desorption test. Similarly, good adsorption performance was also observed for acetone, isopropanol, toluene, styrene, and mesitylene, demonstrating its wide applicability. In adsorption–desorption tests for the whole VOCs, the maximum desorption temperature of MIS was below 115 °C. Therefore, the proposed MIS is a promising efficient adsorbent for VOC removal.

Abstract:The preparation of a mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 both with bimodal framework and textural mesopores and with high thermal stability that results from a thicker wall has been achieved by decreasing surfactant/silicon ratio of synthesis gel. Abstract:L-menthol is one of the most important flavoring additives with abundant plant sources. The distinctive odor, cooling characteristic, and diversified biological activities attribute to its widespread application, especially on confections, oral-care commodities, over-the-counter drugs, and tobacco flavors. However, the manufacturing and storage of L-menthol face challenges due to its high volatility and low melting point. In this work, cocrystallization provides a new strategy to manage the stability problem of this important ingredient. Coformers of dietary sources were chosen based on a supramolecular synthon design, and six cocrystals of L-menthol were synthesized by either a solvent-mediated or solvent-free approach. These new solid forms could significantly increase the melting point and reduce the vapor pressure up to 1/45 of the pure L-menthol. Moreover, cocrystals present a high retention rate under storage conditions. The superior stability can be ascribed to diversified supramolecular cavities assembled by coformers, to which L-menthol molecules are restricted by hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:The attempt of utilizing zeolite as the multifunctional additive to carry given guest and to trap nitrosamines in smoke was reported for the first time. After the menthol was adsorbed by zeolite, the composite was added onto tobacco rod. The release of menthol took place when the hot coal of the burning cigarette approached the zeolite. At the same time, the zeolite reduced the nitrosamines level of cigarette smoke. The thermal release of menthol from zeolite was measured by a temperature programmed desorption (TPD) method. Most zeolites studied in this work showed a main desorption peak below 500 K with the exception of NaY, which displayed two desorption peaks around 545 and 650 K. In addition, the zeolite additives reduced about 30% of nitrosamines in the side stream smoke.

Abstract:Stable V-MCM-41 mesoporous materials have been synthesized by hydrothermal method, using hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide as template, and industrial Na2O.(3.3-3.5)SiO2 as the source of much cheaper silica instead of conventional expensive organic precursors. Several modern techniques like XRD, N-2 adsorption, FT-IR, UV-vis and SEM have been utilized to characterize the framework structure and texture of the samples. The results of NZ adsorption and X-ray diffraction showed that the synthesized samples had a high ordered hexagonal structure, good hydrothermal stability and thermal stability. The selective oxidation of styrene using hydrogen peroxide as oxidant over V MCM-41 samples showed a good catalytic performance of partial oxidation, the phenylacetic acid was the principal product (the selectivity value was 49.4%). Even after a thermal treatment at 900 degrees C in air for 12 h or a hydrothermal treatment in boiling water for 8 days, each of the two resultant materials could retain the ordered channels and a high BET surface area. UV-vis spectra provided strong evidences that most of vanadium ions were incorporated into the framework of siliceous MCM-41 sample. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Abstract:The menthol was easy to escape from mentholated cigarettes during production, transportation, storage and sale due to its strong volatility. In order to solve these problems, the microcapsules of menthol were prepared by phase separation-coacervation method. The results showed that the encapsulated ratio of menthol was 58.7%.The ability of menthol fixing was enhanced and the quality of mentholated cigarettes was improved by imcrocapsules.

Abstract:Due to its ability to evaporate completely at room temperature, menthol has recently been proposed for use as a new kind of temporary consolidant at the excavation site of Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Army. Compared to cyclododecane (CDD), the most widely used temporary consolidant, menthol has the advantages of a longer working time, a well‐established safety profile and easy local availability. In this paper, in order to better understand the temporary consolidation behaviour of menthol and to guide its optimal use in the field, laboratory experiments are carried out on ISO standard sand substrate in conditions mimicking the situation of an archaeological excavation. Basic and important knowledge about menthol, which is related to its effectiveness in temporary consolidation, such as penetration into the substrates, the solidification process and the degradation of the efficiency of consolidation over the sublimation time, are systematically studied. The results show that the penetration of menthol is notably affected by the substrate's temperature, particle size, particle‐size distribution and water content. The solidification of melted menthol is an obvious volume shrinkage process, and the shrinkage extent is greatly affected by the application protocol. The consolidated samples experience a dramatic promotion in compressive strength, and as menthol volatilizes, the consolidated samples will eventually become loose and finally collapse.

Abstract:The pore size of mesoporous molecular sieves materials MCM-41, which was synthesized at room temperature in a strong acidic medium, was effectively enlarged by introducing auxiliary solvent,i.e., mesitylene (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene), into the reaction mixture. It was demonstrated that the optimal reaction conditions to prepare MCM-41 samples with a enlarged pore size are very different from that for samples without addition of auxiliary solvent. To get MCM-41 samples with a enlarged pore size demands a much longer reaction time under stirring.

Abstract:Sol–gel coating technology for the preparation of solid-phase microextraction fibers involves a single-step procedure and allows for in situ creation of chemically bonded coatings which are characterized by high thermal and solvent stabilities. A novel titania sol–gel coating was prepared for the first time on a stainless steel fiber and applied for the headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of menthol with gas chromatography and flame ionization detection. Important parameters influencing the efficiency of SPME process, such as extraction time, extraction temperature and ionic strength, were optimized by central composite design. An extraction time of 40 min at 60 °C gave maximum extraction efficiency, when NaCl (10% w/v) was added to the aqueous sample. The analytical characteristics of the proposed method were comparable with other reported fibers. Under optimized conditions, the linearity was between 0.05 and 100 µg mL− 1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) determined at 0.5 µg mL− 1 concentration level (n = 5) were as follows: intra-day RSD 7.26%; inter-day RSD 10.87%; fiber-to-fiber RSD 9.05%. The relative recoveries determined after spiking a mint distillate sample at three concentration levels from 0.067 to 50.0 µg mL− 1 varied from 86 to 102%. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of menthol in peppermint samples.

Temperature-Driven Structural Evolution during Preparation of MCM-41 Mesoporous Silica

Abstract:This study explores the influence of micelles on the evolution of MCM-41's pore structure via 24 h hydrothermal treatments in a range of temperatures from 100 °C to 200 °C. MCM-41 was characterized using BET, SAXD, FTIR, TEM, and TG-DSC. The findings demonstrate that with temperature elevation from 100 °C to 160 °C, the micelles undergo expansion, leading to an enhanced lattice constant from 4.50 nm to 4.96 nm and an increase in pore diameter from 3.17 nm to 3.45 nm, while maintaining the structural orderliness of the pore channels. Upon cooling, the reversible contraction of micelles and the strategic addition of water glass contribute to a reduction in pore size. However, at a threshold of 180 °C, the SAXD (100) peak's half-peak width surges by approximately 40% relative to that at 160 °C, illustrating a progressive disruption of the hexagonal configuration of MCM-41. Coupled with elevated silica dissolution at higher temperatures in an alkaline solution, a total disintegration of the ordered pore structure at 200 °C results in a drastic reduction in the specific surface area to 307 m2/g. These results are beneficial to developing structural transformation mechanisms of MCM-41 materials and designing mesoporous materials via temperature modulation innovatively.

For example these micelles occluded in the as-synthesized mesoporous silica such as MCM-41 are the unique resource, since they are distributed in the spoke-like configuration to form numerous sub-nanometer gaps between them and the silica walls, and these inherent chemical and geometric properties are very difficult, if not impossible, to be duplicated by other methods [3]. For this reason, it is necessary to utilize these template micelles orientated inside the channel. We had reported a simple approach previously: the as-made ordered mesoporous materials with template occluded in the pores were utilized as the specific support and manually ground with guest precursor salts such as magnesium acetate. And this mixture was then calcined to form high dispersion of guest species like MgO, performing the guest dispersion and the template removal at one step [4]. As the consequence, a solvent-free technique was employed for fast modification of mesoporous materials. Copper, chromium and iron oxide species could be highly dispersed in SBA-15 by manually grinding the corresponding precursor salts and the host, followed by calcinations for the first time. This method is more effective to spontaneously disperse oxide species onto SBA-15 than impregnation. Besides, Cr(VI) species dominate in the mixing sample while Cr(III) species dominate in the impregnation one. In the temperature programmed surface reaction of nitrosamines, the sample prepared by solvent-free method showed a higher catalytic activity than the impregnation one [5]. This method finely exploits the weak interaction of inorganic-organic hybrids to achieve spontaneous infiltration of guest species in the occluded pores of the as-made mesoporous materials so as to be a powerful means to fabricate guest-host composites. More importantly, this method hints a possibility to take advantage of the confined space between silica wall and template aggregates [4,6].
A Novel Method for Incorporation of Heteroatoms into the Framework of Ordered Mesoporous Silica Materials Synthesized in Strong Acidic Media

Abstract:Heteroatoms of Al and Ti are effectively introduced into the framework of ordered mesoporous silica materials (designated as MAS-7 and MTS-9, respectively) in strong acidic media (pH < 0) by a two-step procedure. MAS-7 shows high catalytic activities for the cracking of both small (cumene) and bulky (1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene) molecules because it combines the advantages of both zeolites (strong acidity) and mesoporous materials (large pores). In contrast, Al-SBA-15 samples prepared from both "post-synthesis" and "direct synthesis" present much lower catalytic activities than MAS-7. Furthermore, MTS-9 exhibits very high catalytic activity in phenol hydroxylation by H2O2, giving the phenol conversion of 26%, comparable to TS-1.

Abstract:A mesoporous crystalline molecular sieve CrMCM-41 has been synthesized directly by the hydrothermal method. By the characterizations with XRD, framework IR, DR UV-VIS, 29Si MAS NMR techniques, it is confirmed that small chromium is incorporated into framework positions, and extra-framework chromium is also presence. On the framework IR spectrum, except of the absorption bands 690 cm-1, characteristic of the chromium silicate, an absorption band at 960 cm-1 which is assigned to the streching vibration of O3Si-O-T linkages is observed. The signal of g = 2. 4 in the ESR spectra is also observed, which could be directedly correspendent to the framework Cr. The solid-state MAS NMR spectrum of sample provided further evidence of the presence of the framework Cr species. The adsorption capacity, acidity, and thermal stability of the CrMCM-41 samples have also been elucidated.

Abstract:Thermal stability on a mixture of triblock polymer (P123) and fluorocarbon surfactant (FC-4) in acidic media for synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials has been carefully investigated by NMR spectroscopy at various treated temperatures (RT-180 degrees C) and the templating mechanism of the mixture on high-temperature synthesis has been proposed. Accordingly, we have designed fluorocarbon-free templates for syntheses of ordered mesoporous silica materials at high temperatures. As expected, ordered mesoporous silica materials with high degree of silica condensation are synthesized at high temperatures from these designed templates.
