Abstract:Chaotic communications based on semiconductor lasers have aroused great research interest since 1990s. Physical-layer encryption using chaotic lasers is an alternative to transmit message rapidly and confidentially. There are some practical devices and setups for optical chaotic communications, which are intuitively considered to be secure. However, there is lack of a set of security evaluation rules for these communication setups. According to the recent literature, we summarize several criteria for optical chaotic communications to evaluate the security and point out some methods to enhance the security. These criteria and suggested rules are very helpful in designing secure communication systems using chaotic lasers. Finally we propose some possible hot topics on security analysis of optical chaotic communications in future.

Abstract:A novel single-channel digital secure communication scheme based on dual synchronization of chaos in Colpitts circuits is proposed. Two binary messages, modulated by the OOK scheme and mixed together with two chaotic waveforms, serve as the only transmission signal through a single channel. Simulation results show that two messages can be successfully recovered at their respective receivers. The proposed scheme shows tremendous advantages in terms of effective utilization of spectrum resource for multi-user communications and potential applications in secret sharing systems.
One Physical-Enhanced Security Strategy for All-Optical Chaos Communication Based on Semiconductor Lasers

Abstract:In conventional chaos communication systems based on external-cavity semiconductor lasers (ECSLs), messages are embedded into the chaotic carriers and then directly transmitted to the receiver for recovery. Since the modulated chaotic carrier (chaos + message) is directly transmitted in public link, the eavesdropper can easily access it for interception. It has been proved that when the bit rate is relatively low, the message hidden in the chaotic carrier can be intercepted by using a linear filter with a proper cutoff frequency or reconstructing an illegal receiver system based on the injection locking effect. We propose and numerically demonstrate a security-enhanced chaos communication system by introducing an optical time-frequency encryption (OTFE) module to convert the modulated chaotic carrier (chaos + message) as an uncorrelated signal before transmission. At the receiver end, a matching optical time-frequency decryption (OTFD) module is adopted to recover the modulated chaotic carrier for the final message recovery. The results demonstrate that, with the OTFE module the modulated chaotic carrier would be transformed as an uncorrelated chaotic carrier with the time delay signature being perfectly suppressed in the time domain Simultaneously, in the frequency domain, the spectrum of chaotic carrier would be flattened, and the efficient bandwidth of chaotic carrier can be expanded by several times. With respect to conventional chaos communication systems, the proposed scheme shows obviously higher security under the attack scenarios of direct linear filtering and synchronization utilization The proposed scheme provides a novel way to implement high-security chaos communication.

Abstract:Space free optical communication (FSO) has the advantages of wide bandwidth resources, less susceptibility to attacks, strong resistance to interference, and low losses. The FSO system itself has high security, with the realization of single photon detection technology, the stealer can obtain information without blocking the beam propagation. So using chaotic encryption methods can further improve the security performance of communication systems. This article uses a gamma gamma turbulence model and utilizes the differential chaotic shift keying (DCSK) method of communication systems to improve the system’s resistance to attacks. The theoretical expression of the system error rate under this model is derived, and the security performance of the system is further analyzed. Through experimental simulation, it is proved that the system has better resistance to attacks and lower bit error rates.

Abstract:We propose a novel security scheme to encrypt OFDM signal transmission by introducing the electro-optic chaos in optical physical layer. The transmission performance of OFDM signals is numerically evaluated with respect to the signal-noise ratio (SNR) of the chaotic channel, to guarantee both of the robust security and high quality transmission. The optimized key parameters such as the chaotic masking ratio and the channel SNR are also given to facilitate the practical implementation.

Abstract:Security and privacy are two main dominant features of any communication system. In this paper, physical layer security of free space optical communication system using chaotic modulation scheme i.e., differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) is analyzed, where eavesdropper is actively present near the receiver and interfering between the transmission of secret messages from a transmitter to the receiver. In this manuscript, we have derived analytical expressions for the average secrecy capacity and secrecy outage probability which is used as a metric for secrecy performance analysis. The channel characterization is carried out using gamma–gamma model for weak-to-strong turbulence conditions. The effect of physical layer parameters like transmission link length, spreading length, etc. are considered for evaluating the security performance of the system. Numerical analysis is carried out and graphical results are presented. The results depicted that a very good average secrecy capacity can be achieved even in the presence of eavesdropper, however, it requires a tradeoff between high signal-to-noise ratio of main channel and large values of spreading factor. The proposed system is very promising for the future secured communication systems.

Abstract:Chaotic signal has drawn much attention in secure communication for its characteristics of wideband,noise-like and long-term unpredictable.In this paper,chaotic optical communication is proposed to solve the secure problem of transmission in power communication network.We first study the traditional chaotic optical encryption scheme experimentally,and then in-vestigate the secure problems of chaotic optical communication in power communication network.The scheme of time delay concealment is proposed to solve the secure problem,while the time delay concealment is experimentally demonstrated.Moreo-ver,the security of chaotic optical communication is analyzed for parameter estimate attack,and the key space is proved to be enlarged significantly by analysis,which proves the difficulty of brute force attack,and ensures the transmission security in power communication network.

Abstract:The practical application of chaotic optical communications has been limited by two aspects: the difficulty in concealing the time delay - a critical security parameter in feedback chaotic systems, and the difficulty of significantly enlarging the key space without complicating the implementation. Here we propose an architecture to break the above limits. By introducing a frequency-dependent group delay module with frequency tuning resolution of 1 MHz into the chaotic feedback loop, we demonstrate excellent time delay concealment effect, and an additional huge key space of 1048 can be achieved at the same time. The effectiveness is proved by both numerical simulation and experiment. Besides, the proposed scheme is compatible with the existing commercial optical communication systems, thus pave the way for high-speed secure optical communications. Abstract:Recent demonstrations of chaos-based secure communication have proven the feasibility of secured transmission of high-speed (tens of Gbit/s) signals over certain distances (∼100-km), which bring hope for secure communication from theoretical analysis to practical applications. So far, the chaos-based secure communication system with chaos-masking (CMS) encryption is considered as one of the most important and feasible schemes. In this paper, an optical chaotic carrier generated by an opto-electronic oscillator is used to encrypt 112-Gbit/s message by CMS encryption for data transmission over a 1040-km single-mode-fiber. The message is successfully decrypted by combining coherent detection and our proposed blind decryption algorithms, which can successfully separate the chaotic carrier and the message with the bit-error-rate (BER) below the forward error correction (FEC) threshold. Experimental results show that the coherent detection combined digital signal processing algorithms may be a possible way to promote the practical applications of chaotic optical communication in the future. In addition, this paper reveals that the security of the CMS encryption may be not high enough for those systems requiring rigorous confidentiality. Subsequently, we further discuss the bottlenecks encountered in current high-speed chaotic optical communication systems and analyze how to improve and weight the security and practicability.

Abstract:Optical chaos has great advantages in image encryption and optical message secure transmission, hence a novel image encryption and transmission system based on optical chaos is proposed. In this paper, we introduce optical chaos generated by the semiconductor laser in the encryption process. For increasing the chaotic complexity of slave lasers (SL1 and SL2), the master laser (ML) is subjected to the optical feedback and the external optical injection from the driven laser (DL). Then the SL1 and SL2 can generate the optical chaotic signal simultaneously, which can be used as chaotic carrier and the key for better security. The secret key and a new chaos sequence for the permutation can be structured by selecting randomly numbers from the optical chaos signal generated by the SL1 (or SL2). Furthermore, the result of color image encryption based on the Hilbert curve (HC) can be improved by introducing the optical chaos, after employing logistic chaotic map, the pixel positions and values of plain image are changed disorderly. The security analysis and simulation results can demonstrate the feasibility of proposed algorithms. Moreover, under the condition of chaos synchronization between the SL1 and SL2, the encrypted image can be modulated by using the chaos masking (CMS) technique and transmitted in 10 km single mode fiber (SMF) channel from the SL1 to SL2. The bit error rate (BER) can be for less than 4.22 x 10(-20) and high quality factor (Q-factor) can be also for more than 9.

Abstract:Sample entropy is introduced as a versatile measure for analyzing chaos dynamics and chaos communications. This measure can be directly applied to distinguish different dynamic behaviors for their superior advantages, such as fast computation (available for short data), extreme simplicity, robustness, and even more efficiency in the presence of a certain amount of noise. For the unidirectional coupling master-slave configuration of semiconductor lasers, it is shown that sample entropy analysis can be an effective tool to reveal the chaos synchronization quality. More particularly, when employed to discriminate the encryption performance of a chaos modulation scheme, the sample entropy algorithm seems to be a powerful and complementary tool for detecting and quantifying the presence of a message within a chaotic carrier. Abstract:At present, research on enhancing information transmission security by addressing the two key issues of time delay signal elimination and key space expansion in chaotic secure communication systems has become a hot topic. In order to improve the encryption effect of optical communication network, this paper analyzes the encryption technology of optical communication network with AIT (artificial intelligence technology), designs the encryption scheme of optical communication network with the help of AIT, and takes the digital random sequence as the key. Moreover, this paper uses the digital signal processor to control the arbitrary wave generator to generate multi-ary step square wave, modulate the optical feedback and realize the highly random change of external cavity delay, thus eliminating the long external cavity delay information. This article proposes a chaotic secure communication system using digital sequences as keys and external cavity optical feedback, a device for forming a chaotic source through arbitrary wave phase modulation and single loop feedback, and a chaotic secure communication system with single feedback key phase modulation and injection synchronization. At the same time, this paper proposes a system scheme using single-loop optical feedback phase modulation, the CS(chaotic signal) with complex dynamic behavior is output, and the time-delay signal is effectively eliminated. This paper analyzes the strength and phase information of CS by autocorrelation and mutual information technology, and verifies the effect of optical communication network encryption technology. Through the analysis of experimental results, it can be seen that the optical communication network encryption technology based on AIT proposed in this paper can effectively improve the encryption effect of optical communication network. The algorithm model camera proposed in this article can be used in subsequent practice to improve communication encryption performance

Abstract:The security is a significant topic in transmission and management of pictures, while encryption is an effective method for protecting the secret images. In recent years, the chaotic/hyperchaotic system has been thoroughly developed in image encryption area due to its high randomness. In this chapter, the optical cryptosystems based on chaotic/hyperchaotic system are expressed in detail. We starts with the brief introduction of various chaotic/hyperchaotic systems, then several optical cryptosystems based on the chaotic/hyperchaotic map are expressed in detail. Some experiments are made to verify the security and robustness of these schemes.

Abstract:We propose and numerically demonstrate a security-enhanced chaotic communication system by introducing optical temporal encryption (OTE) into the modulated chaotic carrier (chaos + message). In the proposed scheme, the message is firstly embedded into the original chaotic carrier generated by a conventional external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL), and before being transmitted to the receiver end, the modulated chaotic carrier propagates through an OTE module that consists of one phase modulator driven by a secret sinusoidal signal and one dispersive component. Our numerical results indicate that, as a direct result of the spectral expansion effect of the sinusoidal phase modulation and the phase-to-intensity conversion effect of the dispersive component, the original chaotic carrier can be encrypted as an uncorrelated chaotic signal with a flat spectrum and an efficiently-suppressed time delay signature, this greatly enhances the privacy of the modulated chaotic carrier. Moreover, comparing with the conventional ECSL-based chaotic communication systems without OTE, the proposed scheme not only shows significantly higher security against attacks including direct linear filtering and synchronization utilization, but also provides additional physical key space to further enhance the system security. In addition, by making use of the transmission dispersion for decryption, the proposed encryption scheme supports dispersion-compensation-free secure fiber communication, and it also supports centralized encryption/decryption in wavelength division multiplexing secure chaotic communication systems. The proposed scheme explores a novel encryption method for implementation in high-security chaotic communication systems. Abstract:This paper presents a pioneering approach to bolstering network security and privacy by implementing chaotic optical communication with a hybrid optical feedback system (HOFS). The current baseline methods in network security are often less feasible for hybrid feedback systems, including limited robustness, compromised security, and synchronization challenges. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid approach to address these shortcomings by integrating the HOFS into chaotic optical communication systems (HOFS-COCS) to overcome the baseline challenges. This paper aims to improve network security while significantly maintaining efficient communication channels. Moreover, We designed two algorithms, one for chaotic maps generation and another for text encryption and decryption, to improve security in the hybrid feedback system. Our findings demonstrate through rigorous experimentation and analysis that the proposed (HOFS-COCS) method significantly improves network security by enabling reliable chaos generation, synchronization, and secure message transmission in chaotic optical communication systems. This research represents a significant advancement towards enhanced secrecy and synchronization in chaotic optical communication systems, promising a paradigm shift in network security protocols.

Abstract:We propose a security-enhanced chaos communication system with non-standard optical time lens based on synchronization. By selecting proper injection strength, two lasers can work in synchronized state. The non-standard optical time lens works as spectrum expansion (SE) module is composed of two dispersion mediums and one phase modulator. The numerical results demonstrate that the efficient bandwidth can be expanded up to several tens of GHz. Moreover, by comparing bit error rate (BER) and Q-factor of illegal interception with legal receiver's, it is indicated that information can only be successfully obtained by legal way.

Abstract:In this paper, a secure optical chaos-based communication scheme is proposed. A semiconductor laser (SL) subjected to polarization-rotated optical feedback serves as the drive laser (DL), and two identical or near-identical SLs act as the transmitter laser (TL) and receiver laser (RL). The TL and the RL receive identical polarization-rotated optical injection from the DL. Two channels are used, and the TM mode of the DL, after being rotated by 90 degrees, serves as the perturbation quantity. The communication performance is numerically studied. More importantly, the high fidelity and high degree of privacy of the proposed scheme are verified in detail, and the failure of two potential attacker scenarios is demonstrated, even if the attacker can get access to both channels simultaneously.
