Abstract:The inner shock wave structure with non-equilibrium effect is difficult to be accurately simulated due to the great gradient of density and temperature. In this paper, simplified conventional Burnett (SCB) equations were formulated for the study of hypersonic shock wave structure in continuum-transition regime. The conventional Burnett equations were derived by using the second-order Chapman-Enskog expansion of the velocity distribution function in Boltzmann equation. By neglecting conventional Burnett terms which are inversely proportional to Mach number, the constitutive relations in SCB equations were simplified specifically for hypersonic flow. The rotational and vibrational energy balance equations were also introduced into the governing equations to study the non-equilibrium relaxation processes inside shock waves. Meanwhile, generalized Rankine-Hugoniot relations were established to obtain the post-shock flow parameters in non-equilibrium flow. The numerical methods included three-order Runge-Kutta time-splitting method and AUSMPW+ flux-difference splitting method with MUSCL scheme. One-dimensional Nitrogen shock wave structure at different Mach numbers was simulated using SCB and NS equations respectively. The results indicate that the SCB equations can capture the shock waves structures more precisely and the flow variables are in better agreement with the DSMC results than NS equations in high Mach number cases.

Abstract:The moment methods in rarefied gas dynamics could be divided into generalized hydrodynamic equations (GHE) and extended hydrodynamic equations (EHE), e.g., Burnett equations, Grad equations and R-13 equations, theoretically. Eu firstly developed the GHE based on a non-equilibrium canonical distribution function and demonstrated the thermodynamically consistent of this model. Subsequently, nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR) was proposed by Myong by omitting the product of heat flux and velocity gradient in GHE to reduce the computational complexity. According to the successful application in 1-D shock wave structure and 2-D flat plate flow, the capability of NCCR has already been demonstrated successfully. The motivation of this study was to investigate the different behavior of NCCR and GHE for monatomic and diatomic gases in one-dimensional shock structure problems. Therefore, argon and nitrogen shock structure was calculated using both GHE and NCCR model up to Ma=50. The 3(rd) order MUSCL scheme for inviscid term and the 2(nd) order central difference scheme for viscid scheme were employed to carry out the computations. Finally, the present results including shock wave profile and its qualitative properties by NCCR and GHE are compared with that of DSMC and NS equations. The results showed that the GHE yield 1-D shock wave in much closer agreement with DSMC results than do the NCCR model without considering the computational complexity and efficiency in present cases.

Abstract:Generalized hydrodynamic equations were originally proposed to describe the rarefied non-equilibrium flows beyond the Navier–Stokes–Fourier (NSF) equations by constructing a non-equilibrium canonical distribution function for the mesoscopic Boltzmann equation. Subsequently, nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR) were developed under the adiabatic assumption, the Eu’s closure, and Myong’s simplification. NCCR+ was also proposed to include the omitted terms in Myong’s simplification. The goal of this paper is to assess the improvements in the accuracy due to NCCR+ and the influence of the bulk viscosity in one-dimensional steady shock wave structure for monatomic and diatomic gases. In order to solve NCCR+ equations, a coupled solution process based on the time-independent method for non-conserved variables is employed, which is different from the previous uncoupled solution process used for the NCCR equations. Shock structures in argon and nitrogen are calculated up to Mach 50, where the shock profile, inverse shock thickness, asymmetry parameter, and temperature–density separation distance are validated by DSMC and available experimental measurements. The results show that NCCR+ could not provide much improvement in accuracy compared to NCCR but adds to the computational cost, suggesting that Myong’s simplification used in NCCR is satisfactory. Both NCCR and NCCR+ perform better than NSF in computing the one-dimensional shock wave structure at high Mach numbers. It is also shown that the bulk viscosity has significant influence on the accuracy of prediction of the shock wave structure in a diatomic gas using both NSF and NCCR. Stokes’ hypothesis in conventional NSF is valid only for flows in a monatomic gas and for very low Mach number flows in a diatomic gas. Additionally, it is also found that the viscosity exponent s = 0.81 in variable-hard-sphere model provides a good fit with the experimental data for shock wave in argon using NCCR.

Abstract:High-order modified Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are introduced to describe the transitional flow derived from Burnett equations considering the inaccurate simulation of shock structure using traditional NS continuum methods, particularly at high Mach numbers. This process is performed by defining the effective transportation coefficient, which is associated with Mach number, molecule propriety, and continuum failure criterion. Within this method, the linear Stokes and Fourier relationships are replaced by nonlinear constitutive relationships to describe transitional flow. The traditional NS equation formulation is preserved. The shock structures of both monatomic and diatomic gases are concentrated with different Mach numbers to validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the derived method. The comparison of shock structure with DSMC and Burnett equations shows that the high-order modified NS equations obtain better results than traditional NS equations in terms of shock wave, particularly at high Mach numbers. The modified NS equations also capture the significant features of Burnett equations in shock structure simulation.

Abstract:The Riemann problem for a two-dimensional hyperbolic system of pressureless gas dynamics equations is considered here. Riemann solutions are constructed for any piecewise-constant initial data having two discontinuity rays with the origin as vertex. Non-classical waves (labelled as Dirac-shock waves) appear in some solutions. The entropy conditions for the Dirac-shock waves are given. Uniqueness of Riemann solutions containing Dirac-shock waves fails.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two-dimensional Riemann boundary value problems of Euler system for the isentropic and irrotational Chaplygin gas with initial data being two constant states given in two sectors respectively, where one sector is a quadrant and the other one has an acute vertex angle. We prove that the Riemann boundary value problem admits a global self-similar solution, if either the initial states are close, or the smaller sector is also near a quadrant. Our result can be applied to solving the problem of shock reflection by a ramp.

Abstract:Shock waves, vorticity waves, and entropy waves are fundamental discontinuity waves in nature and arise in supersonic or transonic gas flow, or from a very sudden release (explosion) of chemical, nuclear, electrical, radiation, or mechanical energy in a limited space. Tracking these discontinuities and their interactions, especially when and where new waves arise and interact in the motion of gases, is one of the main motivations for numerical computation for the gas dynamics equations. In this paper, we discuss some historic and recent developments, as well as mathematical challenges, in designing and formulating efficient numerical methods and algorithms to compute weak entropy solutions for the Euler equations for gas dynamics.

Generalized hydrodynamic theory of shock waves in rigid diatomic gases

Abstract:Generalized hydrodynamic theory of shock waves is phenomenologically developed for rigid diatomic molecules. The generalized hydrodynamic equations developed are thermodynamically consistent, obeying the laws of thermodynamics. They reduce to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier theory of the classical hydrodynamics in the limit of low Mach number. The theory is applied to study the one-dimensional shock wave structure of nitrogen gas, which is treated as a rigid molecule. An excellent agreement with experiment is obtained for the inverse shock widths up to Mach number 10 reported in the literature. The theory is applicable to arbitrary dimension. On the basis of direction field singularities of the velocity and temperature evolution equations of the theory, it is possible to predict that the shock solutions exist for all Mach numbers in the case of one-dimensional shock waves studied.

In this paper, we are concerned with both the local and global multidimensional conic shock wave problem for the unsteady potential flow equations when a pointed piston (i.e., the piston degenerates into a single point at the initial time) or an explosive wave expands fast in 2-D or 3-D static polytropic gas. It is shown that a multidimensional shock wave solution of such a class of quasilinear hyperbolic problems not only exists locally, but it also exists globally in the whole space-time and approaches a self-similar solution as t goes to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a transonic shock problem for the Euler flows through a class of 2-D or 3-D nozzles. The nozzle is assumed to be symmetric in the diverging (or converging) part. If the supersonic incoming flow is symmetric near the divergent (or convergent) part of the nozzle, then, as indicated in Section 147 of [R. Courant, K.O. Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, Interscience Publ., New York, 19481, there exist two constant pressures P-1 and P-2 with P-1 < P-2 such that for given constant exit pressure P-e is an element of (P-1, P-2), a symmetric transonic shock exists uniquely in the nozzle, and the position and the strength of the shock are completely determined by P-e. Moreover, it is shown in this paper that such a transonic shock solution is unique under the restriction that the shock goes through the fixed point at the wall in the multidimensional setting. Furthermore, we establish the global existence, stability and the long time asymptotic behavior of an unsteady symmetric transonic shock under the exit pressure Pe when the initial unsteady shock lies in the symmetric diverging part of the 2-D or 3-D nozzle. On the other hand, it is shown that an unsteady symmetric transonic shock is structurally unstable in a global-in-time sense if it lies in the symmetric converging part of the nozzle. Abstract:We study the stability of stationary transonic shock fronts under two-dimensional perturbation in gas dynamics. The motion of the gas is described by the full Euler system. The system is hyperbolic ahead of the shock front, and is a hyperbolic-elliptic composed system behind the shock front. The stability of the shock front and the downstream flow under two-dimensional perturbation of the upstream flow can be reduced to a free boundary value problem of the hyperbolic-elliptic composed system. We develop a method to deal with boundary value problems for such systems. The crucial point is to decompose the system to a canonical form, in which the hyperbolic part and the elliptic part are only weakly coupled in their coefficients. By several sophisticated iterative processes we establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the described free boundary value problem. Our result indicates the stability of the transonic shock front and the flow field behind the shock.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the existence and uniqueness of a transonic shock for the steady flow through a general two-dimensional nozzle with variable sections. The flow is governed by the inviscid potential equation and is supersonic upstream, has no-flow boundary conditions on the nozzle walls, and an appropriate boundary condition at the exit of the exhaust section. The transonic shock is a free boundary dividing two regions of C(1.1-delta)0 flow in the nozzle. The potential equation is hyperbolic upstream where the flow is supersonic, and elliptic in the downstream subsonic region. In particular, our results show that there exists a solution to the corresponding free boundary problem such that the equation is always subsonic in the downstream region of the nozzle when the pressure in the exit of the exhaustion section is appropriately larger than that in the entry. This problem is motivated by the conjecture of Courant and Friedrichs on the transonic phenomena in a nozzle [10]. Furthermore, the stability of the transonic shock is also proven when the upstream supersonic flow is a small steady perturbation for the uniform supersonic flow and the corresponding pressure at the exit has a small perturbation. The main ingredients of our analysis are a generalized hodograph transformation and multiplier methods for elliptic equation with mixed boundary conditions and corner singularities. Meanwhile, the resulting nonlinear boundary conditions are of almost Neumann-type on the conic shock surface and of Neumann-type on the expanding surface of the piston, respectively. As observed in physical experiments or numerical computations, we shall show that this multidimensional shock wave solution not only exists locally but also exists globally in the whole time space and tends to a self-similar solution as $t\to\infty$.

Abstract:The Chaplygin gas model is both interesting and important in the theory of gas dynamics and conservation laws, all the characteristic families of which are linearly degenerate. Majda conjectured that the shock formation never happens for smooth data. In this article, we prove the conjecture for the two space dimensional axisymmetric case. Different from previous approaches to study wave equations with different speeds, we reformulate the problem in the Lagrangian coordinates and consider a single wave equation with variable coefficients. This not only gives a simpler proof but also enables us to treat the case with large angular velocities.

Abstract:A shock wave that is characterized by sharp physical gradients always draws the medium out of equilibrium. In this work, both hydrodynamic and thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects around the shock wave are investigated using a discrete Boltzmann model. Via Chapman-Enskog analysis, the local equilibrium and nonequilibrium velocity distribution functions in one-, two-, and three-dimensional velocity space are recovered across the shock wave. Besides, the absolute and relative deviation degrees are defined in order to describe the departure of the fluid system from the equilibrium state. The local and global nonequilibrium effects, nonorganized energy, and nonorganized energy flux are also investigated. Moreover, the impacts of the relaxation frequency, Mach number, thermal conductivity, viscosity, and the specific heat ratio on the nonequilibrium behaviours around shock waves are studied. This work is helpful for a deeper understanding of the fine structures of shock wave and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics.

Abstract:In this article, a system of partial differential equations governing the one-dimensional motion of an inviscid gas with solid dust particles is considered. The evolutionary behavior of cylindrical and spherical shock waves in dusty gas is determined. For this, we used the method based on the kinematics of one-dimensional motion of shock waves to derive an infinite hierarchy of transport equations describing the strength of shock waves and induced discontinuity behind it. These equations are used to analyze the growth and decay behaviors of shock waves in a dusty gas. The first two truncation approximations are considered and the obtained results are compared with the results obtained by Guderley's exact solution and the characteristic rule.

At first, near the unique blowup point we give a precise description on the space-time blowup rate of the smooth solution and meanwhile derive the cusp singularity structure of characteristic envelope. These results are established through extending the smooth solution of the completely nonlinear blowup system across the blowup time. Subsequently, by utilizing a new form on the resulting 1-D strictly hyperbolic system with $(n-1)$ good components and one bad component, together with the choice of an efficient iterative scheme and some involved analyses, a weak entropy shock wave starting from the blowup point is constructed.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation-(1 + 3G ''(0)(partial derivative(t)phi)(2))partial derivative(2)(t)phi + Delta phi = 0,where is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since satisfies the classical null condition, it admits global smooth solutions for small data. Therefore, we will work with large data (in energy norm). Moreover, no symmetry condition is imposed on the initial datum. We emphasize the geometric perspectives of shock formation in the proof. More specifically, the key idea is to study the interplay between the following two objects: (1) the energy estimates of the linearized equations of ; (2) the differential geometry of the Lorentzian metric . Indeed, the study of the characteristic hypersurfaces (implies shock formation) is the study of the null hypersurfaces of g. The techniques in the proof are inspired by the work (Christodoulou in The Formation of Shocks in 3-Dimensional Fluids. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2007) in which the formation of shocks for 3-dimensional relativistic compressible Euler equations with small initial data is established. We also use the short pulse method which is introduced in the study of formation of black holes in general relativity in Christodoulou (The Formation of Black Holes in General Relativity. Monographs in Mathematics, European Mathematical Society, 2009) and generalized in Klainerman and Rodnianski (Acta Math 208(2):211-333, 2012).
