Abstract:A wavelength tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser with flattened output power spectrum over a broadband is proposed and demonstrated. The power flattening is achieved using a high-birefringence fiber loop mirror, in which a number of high-birefringence fiber sections and polarization controllers are used to get a reflection spectrum that can compensate for the output power spectrum. The wavelength tuning is realized by compressing or stretching the FBGs in the laser cavity. A 1×3 switchable fiber Bragg grating array is incorporated into the fiber ring to get a wideband tuning range of 38 nm, from 1527 to 1565 nm. Within this range, the output power uniformity is controlled within ±0.8 dB. The total output power is about 4 dBm, the 3-dB linewidth is 0.01 nm, and the side mode suppression ratio is more than 48 dB.

Abstract:An erbium-doped fiber ring laser operating at the C-band is experimentally demonstrated. A maximum output laser power of 0.13 dBm with a step-like spectrum and 3-dB bandwidth of more than 0.4 nm is obtained. Output power is theoretically simulated and fits well with experiment data. A slight improvement in signal-to-noise ratio is observed when the ring laser is applied in an optical fiber sensing system compared to a conventional superluminescent laser, and its compatibility with dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is verified. We believe the ring laser in this article has potential in the future use of a DWDM optical fiber sensing system. (C) 2019 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Abstract:By using the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), we demonstrated a novel wavelength-tunable narrow linewidth erbium-doped fiber ring laser (EDFL) with a maximum tuning rang up to 25 nm (from 1532.0 nm to 1557.2 nm). The NPR effect effectively induced intensity- and wavelength-dependent loss to alleviate mode competition caused by homogenous gain broadening in erbium-doped fibers. By adjusting the polarization controllers in the cavity, the laser has a power-equalized output, and the output power fluctuation between different wavelengths is smaller than 0.2dB, the line-width of each light laser is 0.06 nm by 3 dB.

Abstract:A L-band super-fluorescent light source with a flat spectral width of 30nm (0.7dB) is obtained through optimizing length of erbium optic fiber. The light source has an output power of 7.21dBm. The gain property of L-band amplifier is studied on this basis. A flat gain bandwidth from 1565nm~1595nm is obtained with 1480nm laser as forward pumping source through the further optimization for the length of erbium optic fiber. The gain of small signal can be 22dB.

Abstract:In this letter, a narrow line-width ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser with a fiber Bragg grating inside the cavity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In order to realize single longitudinal mode (SLM) output, an un-pumped ytterbium-doped fiber is used as an SLM selector. First, the effect of the coupler output ratio on the output power and the threshold power is discussed in this proposed laser, and the coupler output ratio of 30% is adopted at last. Furthermore, the spectrum and frequency spectra are analyzed to obtain the line width and frequency stability. Finally, the output power with fluctuation in half an hour is measured to evaluate the power stability. The results show that the output power of 7 mW, signal-to-noise ratio greater than 65 dB at 1069 nm, line width less than 500 Hz, and power stability below 1.5% can be achieved for the laser.

Abstract:A novel L-band multi-wavelength erbium-doped fibre ring laser was proposed and studied by numerical method. The numerical model was developed based on a C-band EDFA and the propagation and rate equations of homogeneous broaden in two levels medium. In this L-band model, the excited state absorption was included during computing. The flat multi-wavelength laser in L-band was achieved by lengthening the erbium-doped fibre, and utilizing detrimental backward amplified spontaneous emission as a secondary pump power. The laser emitting spectral region was shifted, to prevent the mode competing at room temperature. This kind of laser can be useful in a wavelength division multiplexing transmission (WDM) system.

Abstract:We demonstrated a 40-GHz actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser that incorporates an electro-absorption modulator and a linear optical amplifier. Stable pulses with peak power of 46 mW and pulsewidth of 2.8 ps are obtained when pumped with 100 mw.

Abstract:The band-pass characteristic of fiber grating Michelson interferometer is analyzed, which acts as both band-pass filter and Q-switch. An erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on fiber grating Michelson interferometer is implemented for producing single longitudinal mode CW operation with 5 MHz spectral linewidth and up to 6 mW output power. In Q-switched operation, stable fiber laser output pulses with repetition rate of 800 Hz, pulse width of 0.6 μs, average power of 1.8 mW and peak power of 3.4 W are demonstrated. The peak power and average power of the Q-switched pulses are varied with the repetitionrate.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a high performance four-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), enabled by a figure-8 compound-ring-cavity (F8-CRC) filter for single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) selection and a polarization-managed four-channel filter (PM-FCF) for defining four lasing wavelengths. We introduce a novel methodology utilizing signal-flow graph combined with Mason's rule to analyze a CRC filter in general and apply it to obtain the important design parameters for the F8-CRC filter used in this paper. By combining the functions of the F8-CRC filter and the PM-FCF filter assisted by the enhanced polarization hole-burning and polarization dependent loss, we achieve the EDFL with fifteen lasing states, including four single-, six dual-, four tri- and one quad-wavelength lasing operations. In particular, all the four single-wavelength operations are in stable SLM oscillation, typically with a linewidth of <600 Hz, a RIN of <=-154.58 dB/Hz@>=3 MHz and an output power fluctuation of <=+/-3.45%. In addition, all the six dual-wavelength operations have very similar performances, with the performance parameters close to those of the single-wavelength lasing operations. Finally, we achieve the wavelength spacing tuning of the dual-wavelength operations for the photonic generation of tunable microwave signals, and successfully obtain a signal at 23.10 GHz as a demonstration.

Abstract:A compact erbium-doped ring-shaped fiber laser suitable for fiber-optic sensing applications has been developed. The fiber laser utilized a tunable fiber Fabry–Perot filter as the tuning element and had a moderate milli-Watt level power output over almost the whole tuning range from 1530 to 1595nm with a power fluctuation of 0.15dB. High repetition rate scanning of laser operation over the whole tuning range was achieved at rates of up to 200Hz. Moreover, the performance of the ring-shaped fiber laser configured with a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber was investigated for its larger wavelength tunability of over 100nm. Output power characteristics of this ring-shaped fiber laser were also investigated when it worked in a scanning mode. A distorted power wavelength dependence, as well as some pulsing phenomenon were observed in scanning mode.

Abstract:A widely tunable ring cavity fiber laser using 1480 n m high power LDs as forward and backward pumping is discussed.It also takes the Bi-based Er-doped fiber as the gain media,and uses the rotating F-P tunable f ilter and two band-pass filters as the wavelength tuning device .The laser ca n cover 100 nm(1523~1623 nm) tuning range controlled by software. The output pow er is above 2 dBm. The 3 dB bandwidth is below 0.1 nm. The wavelength repetitio n precision is below 0.01 nm.

Abstract:A novel ring fiber laser based on Er-doped photonic crystal fiber (EDPCF) is demonstrated. EDPCF is used as gain medium to implement stable CW operation. The laser output wavelength can be continuously tuned over the range from 1529 to 1535 nm by adjusting the polarization state of the light inside the cavity. Stable dual-wavelength CW operation is also observed with proper settings of the intracavity polarization controllers. The laser stability in terms of the output power and the operation wavelength is characterized, and less than ±0.05 dB power fluctuation as well as 18 pm wavelength perturbation are obtained.

Abstract:A diode-pumped, compact, wavelength tunable, single frequency Er3+:Yb3+ codoped DBR fiber laser is reported. An output power of 2.4mW for 75mW of 980nm diode pump power and a slope efficiency of 6% at 1557.05nm were obtained. Linewidth of the laser was estimated at 1557.05nm to be less than 1MHz. Also, the laser can be tuned to wavelengths between 1557nm to 1561nm and operates single mode throughout this range.

Abstract:Broad-band tunability of erbium-doped silica fiber ring lasers in the 1.48–1.62-$\mu$m wavelength band is demonstrated through modeling and experiment. Tunability over the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) C- and L-bands is achieved with a simple laser design using a single gain medium working in deep saturation. A comprehensive numerical model based on an iterative solution of propagation rate equations and spectrally resolved Giles parameters was used to analyze the impact of various laser variables. The dependence of laser output power on total cavity loss, erbium-doped fiber length, pump power, and lasing wavelength has been investigated. The calculated laser characteristics have been found in good quantitative agreement with the experimentally obtained data. Experimental results concerning wavelength tunability, output power, and lasing wavelength repeatability/stability and spectral purity are also presented in this paper.

Abstract:To overcome Yb lasing, a kilowatt-level 1535 nm fiber laser is utilized to in-band pump an Er:Yb co-doped fiber (EYDF) amplifier. The output power of a 301 W narrow-linewidth EYDF amplifier operating at 1585 nm, with 3 dB bandwidth of 150 pm and M-2 < 1.4, is experimentally demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest output power achieved in L-band narrow-linewidth fiber amplifiers with good beam quality. Theoretically, a new ion transition behavior among energy levels for in-band pumping EYDF is uncovered, and a spatial-mode-resolved nonlinearity-assisted theoretical model is developed to understand its internal dynamics. Numerical simulations reveal that the reduction in slope efficiency is significantly related to excited-state absorption (ESA). ESA has a nonlinear hindering effect on power scaling. It can drastically lower the pump absorption and slope efficiency with increasing pump power for in-band pumped EYDF amplifiers. Meanwhile, optimized approaches are proposed to improve its power to the kilowatt level via in-band pumping.

Abstract:We demonstrated a 414.9 W large-mode-area Er/Yb co-doped fiber amplifier with a good time-domain stability, seeded by a 1568 nm random fiber laser (RFL) seed with a half-open cavity. We believe this to be the highest output power of the RFL in a 1.5 µm band to date. At the maximum output power, the optical efficiency was 36.9% and the 3 dB linewidth was 0.69 nm. The 1535 nm fiber lasers were used as the pumping source of the main amplifier to avoid the parasitic lasing of Yb ions. The spectral linewidth broadening was suppressed during the amplification process due to the stable temporal output of the RFL seed. The M2 factor increased from 2.28 at 145.7 W to 2.83 at 280.8 W. Our research provides a robust approach for achieving high-power and high-spectral-purity RFLs in the 1.5 µm band.

Abstract:To obtain single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser, a simple quad-ring scheme is designed for diminishing dense multi-longitudinal-mode (MLM) noise. According to the presented quad-ring design, the wavelength-tuning scale not only can be increased from C- to L-bands, but also can compress the laser linewidth to sub-kHz. Furthermore, the related optical properties of output power, output stability, optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR), laser linewidth and wavelength-selectable range are also executed and discussed in this work.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth erbium-doped fiber lasers (EDFLs) hold in significant potential optical fiber sensing, wavelength multiplexing transmission, and optical fiber communication. However, many EDFLs produced outputs with linewidth in several kHz level. Therefore, a high optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), narrow linewidth single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) EDFL was proposed and investigated in this work. The EDFL utilized a combination of compound-ring cavity filter and a self-injection locked mechanism to generate a stable SLM output with an OSNR greater than 72 dB. The maximum wavelength drift and maximum peak power fluctuation over 60 min were maintained at low values of 0.0041 nm and 0.16 dB. Moreover, a narrow linewidth of 1.82 kHz at a measuring time of 0.002 s was realized. Furthermore, the research also investigated output power variations with different pump powers, relaxation oscillation, and the dependence of output central wavelength on the axial strain.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser based on four-wave-mixing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The 5km single mode fiber in the cavity enhances the four-wave-mixing to suppress the homogenous broadening of the erbium-doped fiber and get the stable multi-wavelength comb. The lasing stability is investigated. When the pump power is 300mW the fiber laser has 5-lasing lines and the maximum fluctuation of the output power is about 3.18dB. At the same time, a laser with 110m high nonlinear fiber (HNFL) is demonstrated. When the pump power is 300mW it has 7-lasing lines (above -30dBm) and the maximum fluctuation is 0.18dB.
