Abstract:Currently, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in the industrial application of renewable electrochemical technologies. Thus, developing electrocatalysts with high performance and sufficient stability for the OER is urgently pursued. Although perovskite oxides have provided numerous degrees of freedom for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity due to their diversity and flexibility, their investigation for the OER is mostly limited to pseudocubic structures. In this study, a complex perovskite oxide, Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.1Ir0.1O3−δ (BSCFI-91), with a six-layer hexagonal (6H) structure, is synthesized first, displaying higher OER activity. Based on parent Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF-91), BSCFI-91 is obtained by replacing iron (Fe) with low-level iridium (Ir) doping and produces a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 300 mV, a small Tafel slope of 61.2 mV dec–1, and good stability up to 10 h in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The dramatically enhanced OER performance is achieved by optimizing cobalt (Co) valence and highly oxidative oxygen species based on the hexagonal structure. The Ir incorporation facilitated the oxygen (O) p band center approaching to the Fermi level, indicating that BSCFI-91 could be a candidate in the electrocatalyst application. Moreover, this study opens up a new way to design efficient perovskite oxides for OER catalysis in terms of hexagonal crystal structures and composition modulation strategy.
Phosphorus‐Doped Perovskite Oxide As Highly Efficient Water Oxidation Electrocatalyst in Alkaline Solution

Abstract:Developing cost‐effective and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance for the storage of renewable energies. Perovskite oxides serve as attractive candidates given their structural and compositional flexibility in addition to high intrinsic catalytic activity. In a departure from the conventional doping approach utilizing metal elements only, here it is shown that non‐metal element doping provides an another attractive avenue to optimize the structure stability and OER performance of perovskite oxides. This is exemplified by a novel tetragonal perovskite developed in this work, i.e., SrCo0.95P0.05O3– δ (SCP) which features higher electrical conductivity and larger amount of O2 2−/O− species relative to the non‐doped parent SrCoO3– δ (SC), and thus shows improved OER activity. Also, the performance of SCP compares favorably to that of well‐developed perovskite oxides reported. More importantly, an unusual activation process with enhanced activity during accelerated durability test (ADT) is observed for SCP, whereas SC delivers deactivation for the OER. Such an activation phenomenon for SCP may be primarily attributed to the in situ formation of active A‐site‐deficient structure on the surface and the increased electrochemical surface area during ADT. The concept presented here bolsters the prospect to develop a viable alternative to precious metal‐based catalysts.

Abstract:The perovskite SrNb0.1 Co0.7 Fe0.2 O3-δ (SNCF) is a promising OER electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with remarkable activity and stability in alkaline solutions. This catalyst exhibits a higher intrinsic OER activity, a smaller Tafel slope and better stability than the state-of-the-art precious-metal IrO2 catalyst and the well-known BSCF perovskite. The mass activity and stability are further improved by ball milling. Several factors including the optimized eg orbital filling, good ionic and charge transfer abilities, as well as high OH(-) adsorption and O2 desorption capabilities possibly contribute to the excellent OER activity.
Calcium-doped Lanthanum Nickelate Layered Perovskite and Nickel Oxide Nano-Hybrid for Highly Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:Perovskite oxides have attracted great attention recently for its high intrinsic activity in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems. However, their specific activity and durability require substantial enhancement to meet the requirement of the practical applications. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that a layered perovskite-metal oxide nano-hybrid electrocatalyst synthesized through a one-pot combustion process shows remarkably high OER activity in alkaline solution. The hybrid consists of two major phases, i.e. NiO and K2NiF4-type layered perovskite (La0.613Ca0.387)2NiO3.562, showing synergistically enhanced OER activity and excellent durability under harsh OER operating conditions. The NiO–(La0.613Ca0.387)2NiO3.562 hybrid exhibits the lowest Tafel slope (~42mVdec−1) and highest mass activity (52.2mAmg−1 @ 1.63V vs RHE) among all catalysts studied including noble metal oxide RuO2 and well-known perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ.

Abstract:An efficient and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is key for electrochemical energy generation and storage technologies. Here, the rational design and in situ formation of an antiperovskite-based hybrid with a porous conductive Cu1-xNNi3-y (x and y represent defect) core and amorphous FeNiCu (oxy) hydroxide shell is reported as a promising water oxidation electrocatalyst, showing outstanding performance. Benefiting from the unique advantage of core-shell structure, as well as the synergistic effect of Fe, Ni, and Cu and the highly porous hierarchical structure, the hybrid catalyst exhibits highly efficient and robust OER performance in alkaline environments, outperforming the benchmark IrO2 catalyst in several aspects. Our findings demonstrate the application potential of antiperovskite-based materials in the field of electrocatalysis, which may inspire insights into the development of novel materials for energy generation and storage applications.

Abstract:Developing robust and highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for renewable, secure, and emission‐free energy technologies. Perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3‐δ (BSCF) has emerged as a promising OER electrocatalyst with desirable intrinsic activity. Inspired by the factor that substituting in transition‐metal sublattice of the perovskite can further optimize the OER activity, herein, nickel‐substituted BSCF is adopted, that is, Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8‐xFe0.2NixO3‐δ (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, denoted as BSCFNx, x = 5, 10, 20, respectively), as efficient and stable OER catalysts in alkaline solution. The phase structure, microchemistry, oxygen vacancy, and electrochemical activity of such samples are well‐investigated. Endowed with an overpotential of only 278 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of merely 47.98 mV dec−1, BSCFN20 exhibits the optimum OER activity. When constructing a two‐electrode cell with BSCFN20 as anode and Pt/C as cathode (BSCFN20||Pt/C) for water splitting, it only requires a voltage of 1.63 V to achieve 50 mA cm−2, and the BSCFN20||Pt/C remains stable within 80 h at 10 mA cm−2, superior to the state‐of‐the‐art RuO2||Pt/C counterpart. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing stable and highly active perovskite electrocatalysts for future energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Developing earth‐abundant low‐cost electrocatalysts is of prime research interest towards the need for clean energy technology, such as water‐splitting reactions. Herein, we have explored the electrocatalytic activity of the double perovskite‐based strontium cobalt molybdenum oxide (SCMO) towards water‐splitting reactions, both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Prepared by scalable autocombustion synthesis, the as‐synthesised bulk SCMO perovskite exhibited impressive electrocatalytic performance attributed to its substantial electrochemical active surface area. For the OER, it exhibited an overpotential of 350 mV with a Tafel slope value of 76 mV/dec. Concurrently, it showed proficient activity in the HER, revealing an overpotential of 270 mV and a Tafel slope of 112 mV/dec. Further, this perovskite material was stable during continuous electrocatalysis over a 24 h period with a negligible increase in observed overpotential value. The electronic density of states confirmed that the Co plays a pivotal role in enhancing electrocatalytic activities. This is achieved by a substantial reduction in the band gap and enhancement of the d‐band centre to an optimal level, rendering the system more favourable for electrocatalytic reactions. Our study contributes insights to the advancement of the design and utilization of perovskite‐based catalysts in the realm of sustainable energy technologies.

Abstract:The requirement for a sustainable and renewable energy has inspired substantial interests in designing and developing earth-abundant and high-effectiveness electrocatalysts/electrodes for fuel cells and metal-air batteries, in which oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) plays a crucial role. Perovskite oxides have acquired rapid attention as ORR electrocatalysts to replace noble-metal-based catalysts owing to their intrinsic electrocatalytic activity, compositional and structural flexibility. Herein, we report a new Sc and P co-doped perovskite oxide (La0.8Sr0.2Mn0.95Sc0.025P0.025O3-δ, LSMSP) as an active and robust electrocatalyst for the ORR in an alkaline solution. LSMSP electrocatalyst shows superior ORR activity and stability than those of pristine La0.8Sr0.2MnO3-δ (LSM), Sc-doped LSM and P-doped LSM due to the optimized average valence of Mn ions, the large surface area, the smaller particle size and the synergetic effect introduced by the co-doping. Moreover, compared to the benchmark Pt/C electrocatalyst, LSMSP electrocatalyst displays comparable ORR activity and superior durability. These above results suggest that the co-doping strategy of Sc and P into perovskites is a useful method to design high-performance electrocatalysts for the ORR, which can be used in other electrocatalysis-based applications.

Abstract:A multi‐phase nanocomposite SCS electrocatalyst is derived from a facile one‐pot self‐assembly process. Tin incorporation is in favor of crystal structure, oxygen transport, and electrical conductivity. SCS nanocomposite exhibits impressive OER activity and durability, substantially outperforming its pristine SC counterpart. Summary The rational design of effective and specific catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for the implementation of electrochemical water oxidation as a sustainable route to produce hydrogen. Perovskite oxides have attracted considerable interests in view of the highly tunable structural, electronic, and catalytic properties associated with their compositions. Herein, an efficient Sn‐incorporated nominal perovskite nanocomposite, SrCo0.7Sn0.3O3−δ (SCS), derived from a facile one‐pot self‐assembly process, is designed as an outstanding electrocatalyst to catalyze OER in alkaline conditions. Benefiting from the unique structure, increased active oxygen intermediates, and favorable electrical conductivity, the optimized SCS exhibits superior OER electrocatalytic performance, including low overpotential of only 309 mV at 10 mA cm−2, fast kinetics with a small Tafel slope of 56 mV dec−1, and 72‐fold improvement in mass activity and 108‐fold enhancement in specific activity relative to the pristine SrCoO3−δ catalyst. The SCS catalyst also demonstrates excellent OER durability with negligible potential fluctuation for 30 hours continuous operation. This work highlights a promising strategy to develop high‐performance perovskite nanocomposites to perform efficient OER electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a vital electrochemical process for various energy conversion and fuel production technologies. Co/Ni‐rich perovskite oxides are extensively studied as promising alternatives to precious‐metal catalysts; however, low‐cost and earth‐abundant iron (Fe)‐rich perovskites are rarely investigated to date due to their poor activity and durability. This study reports an Fe‐rich Sr0.95Ce0.05Fe0.9Ni0.1O3−δ (SCFN) perovskite oxide with minor Ce/Ni co‐doping in A/B sites as a high‐performance OER electrocatalyst. Impressively, SCFN shows more than an order of magnitude enhancement in mass‐specific activity compared to the SrFeO3−δ (SF) parent oxide, and delivers an attractive small overpotential of 340 mV at 10 mA cm−2, outperforming many Co/Ni‐rich perovskite oxides ever reported. Additionally, SCFN displays robust operational durability with negligible activity loss under alkaline OER conditions. The increased activity and stability of SCFN can be ascribed to co‐doping‐induced synergistic promotion between structural and electronic modulation, where Ce doping facilitates the formation of a 3D corner‐sharing cubic structure and Ni doping gives rise to strong electronic interactions between active sites, which is key to achieving a highly active long‐life catalyst. Importantly, this strategy is universal and can be extended to other Fe‐based parent perovskite oxides with high structural diversity. A co‐doping‐induced structural and electronic modulation is adopted to develop Fe‐based perovskite oxides (Sr0.95Ce0.05Fe0.9Ni0.1O3−δ as proof‐of‐concept example) with high and stable electrocatalytic activity for Oxygen evolution reaction (OER), resulting from the formation of 3D corner‐sharing cubic structure and strong electronic interaction between B‐site ions. Importantly, such a strategy is universal and applicable for other Fe‐based parent perovskite oxides with different crystal structures.

Multi-active Sites Derived from a Single/double Perovskite Hybrid for Highly Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role in the application of water splitting, which is a highly competitive option for a sustainable energy future. Thus, it is vital to design highly active and durable electrocatalyst for OER. Herein a hybrid with the nominal composition of Ba2Co1.5-Mo0.25Nb0.25O6-delta (denoted as BC1.5 MN) electrocatalyst consisting of both double perovskite and single perovskite structures is synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. When tested as an electrocatalyst for OER, the BC1.5MN electrocatalyst requires a current density of 10 mAcm(-2) at an overpotential of 400 mV, an onset overpotential of 260 mV, and a Tafel slope of 70 mV dec(-1), which are superior to that of precious metal oxide IrO2 catalyst. Chronoamperometric and cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that the BC1.5MN electrocatalyst has outstanding durability in alkaline solution. The synergistic effect between multi-active sites derived from a single/double perovskite hybrid structure results in one of the most active perovskite-based OER electrocatalysts in alkaline solution. B-Site Cation Ordered Double Perovskites as Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Abstract:Simple disordered perovskite oxides have been intensively exploited as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) towards their application in water splitting, reversible fuel cells, and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, the B-site cation-ordered double perovskites Ba2BixSc0.2Co1.8-xO6-, with two types of cobalt local environments, are demonstrated to be superior electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline solution, demonstrating ultrahigh catalytic activity. In addition, no obvious performance degradation is observed for the Ba2Bi0.1Sc0.2Co1.7O6- sample after a continuous chronopotentiometry test. The critical role of the ordered [Co2+] and [Sc3+, Bi5+, Co3+] dual environments in improving OER activity is exhibited. These results indicate that B-site cation-ordered double perovskite oxides may represent a new class of promising electrocatalysts for the OER in sustainable energy storage and conversion systems.
An aqueous preoxidation method for monolithic perovskite electrocatalysts with enhanced water oxidation performance.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides with poor conductivity call for three-dimensional (3D) conductive scaffolds to demonstrate their superb reactivities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, perovskite formation usually requires high-temperature annealing at 600° to 900°C in air, under which most of the used conductive frameworks (for example, carbon and metal current collectors) are reductive and cannot survive. We propose a preoxidization coupled electrodeposition strategy in which Co is preoxidized to Co through cobalt Fenton reaction in aqueous solution, whereas the reductive nickel framework is well maintained during the sequential annealing under nonoxidative atmosphere. The in situ-generated Co is inherited into oxidized perovskites deposited on 3D nickel foam, rendering the monolithic perovskite electrocatalysts with extraordinary OER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 350 mV required for 10 mA cm, a very small Tafel slope of 59 mV dec, and superb stability in 0.10 M KOH. Therefore, we inaugurate a unique strategy for in situ hybridization of oxidative active phase with reductive framework, affording superb reactivity of perovskite electrocatalyst for efficient water oxidation.

Abstract:Alkaline water splitting is a technique utilizing renewable resource-derived electricity to generate hydrogen with high purity. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with sluggish dynamics is the crucial half-reaction toward electrocatalytic water splitting, which needs a non-noble metal catalyst with high performance to make the reaction process be more energy-efficient and economical. Perovskite, as a kind of price moderate, compositional adjustable, structurally stable, and highly active material, has been widely used as the catalyst for the OER under alkaline conditions. In this review, we systematically expound the OER-related catalytic mechanism, provide the evaluative criteria of catalytic performance, and then summarize the corresponding measurement methods of catalysts for the alkaline OER. Furthermore, our emphasis is given to the synthetic methods, the activity descriptors, and the performance optimization strategies of perovskite-based catalysts. Finally, we present a number of future directions on the development of more highly efficient perovskite-based catalysts for the alkaline OER.
Amorphous N-Doped Cobalt Borophosphate Nanoparticles As Robust and Durable Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

Abstract:Exploiting robust and durable electrocatalysts for water splitting remains a challenge due to its sluggish oxidative half reaction. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and novel strategy to prepare an amorphous N-doped cobalt borophosphate catalyst through the calcination of zeolite-type cobalt borophosphate precursor with NH3 molecule. The as prepared material displays robust catalytic activity and high stability within 18 h for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH, e.g., an overpotential of 276 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) (eta @ 10 mA cm(-2)) and a Tafel slope of 55.8 mV dec(-1), which is comparable to that of the benchmark IrO2 electrocatalyst. Its excellent catalytic activity should be ascribed to the N-dopant which could accelerate the electron transfer by tuning the electronic structure of this borophosphate; moreover, this amorphous phase with zeolite-like porous structures could increase its active site density and improve the electron and mass transport as well as facilitating gas release. Our study not only discovers a high-efficiency OER electrocatalyst but also provides a facile and practical pathway to develop promising electrocatalysts for water splitting.
Super-Exchange Interaction Induced Overall Optimization in Ferromagnetic Perovskite Oxides Enables Ultrafast Water Oxidation

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial in many renewable electrochemical technologies including regenerative fuel cells, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and water splitting. It is found that abundant active sites with favorable electronic structure and high electrical conductivity play a dominant role in achieving high electrocatalytic efficiency of perovskites, thus efficient strategies need to be designed to generate multiple beneficial factors for OER. Here, highlighted is an unusual super-exchange effect in ferromagnetic perovskite oxide to optimize active sites and enhance electrical conductivity. A systematic exploration about the composition-dependent OER activity in SrCo1 x Rux O3- δ (denoted as SCRx) (x = 0.0-1.0) perovskite is displayed with special attention on the role of super-exchange interaction between high spin (HS) Co3+ and Ru5+ ions. Induced by the unique Co3+ -O-Ru5+ super-exchange interactions, the SCR0.1 is endowed with abundant OER active species including Co3+ /Co4+ , Ru5+ , and O2 2- /O- , high electrical conductivity, and metal-oxygen covalency. Benefiting from these advantageous factors for OER electrocatalysis, the optimized SCR0.1 catalyst exhibits a remarkable activity with a low overpotential of 360 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , which exceeds the benchmark RuO2 and most well-known perovskite oxides reported so far, while maintaining excellent durability. This work provides a new pathway in developing perovskite catalysts for efficient catalysis.
A Perovskite Nanorod As Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:The development of highly efficient and low‐cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is paramount for water splitting associated with the storage of clean and renewable energy. Here, this study reports its findings in the development of a nanostructured perovskite oxide as OER/HER bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. Prepared by a facile electrospinning method, SrNb0.1Co0.7Fe0.2O3–δ perovskite nanorods (SNCF‐NRs) display excellent OER and HER activity and stability in an alkaline solution, benefiting from the catalytic nature of perovskites and unique structural features. More importantly, the SNCF‐NR delivers a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a cell voltage of merely ≈1.68 V while maintaining remarkable durability when used as both anodic and cathodic catalysts in an alkaline water electrolyzer. The performance of this bifunctional perovskite material is among the best ever reported for overall water splitting, offering a cost‐effective alternative to noble metal based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of efficient, inexpensive, and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for many electrochemical energy conversion technologies. The prohibitive price and insufficient stability of the state-of-the-art IrO2 electrocatalyst for the OER inhibits its use in practical devices. Here, SrM0.9Ti0.1O3-δ (M = Co, Fe) perovskites with different B-site transition metal elements were investigated as potentially cheaper OER electrocatalysts. They were prepared through a typical sol-gel route, and their catalytic activities for the OER in alkaline medium were comparatively studied using rotating disk electrodes. Both materials show high initial intrinsic activities in alkaline electrolyte for the OER, comparable to the benchmark perovskite-type electrocatalyst Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF), but SrCo0.9Ti0.1O3-δ (SCT) possessed more operational stability than SrFe0.9Ti0.1O3-δ (SFT), even better than BSCF and IrO2 catalysts. Based on the X-ray photoelectron spectra analysis of the oxidation states of the surface Co/Fe in both SFT and SCT before and after the OER tests, an explanation for their different operational stabilities was proposed by adopting a reported activity descriptor correlated to the eg occupancy of the 3d electron of the surface transition metal cations in the perovskite oxides. The above results indicate that SCT is a promising alternative electrocatalyst for the OER and can be used in electrochemical devices for water oxidation.
Strong‐Coupled Cobalt Borate Nanosheets/Graphene Hybrid As Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation under Both Alkaline and Neutral Conditions

Abstract:AbstractDeveloping highly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance for designing various renewable energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, we report the synthesis of a category of Co‐Pi analogue, namely cobalt‐based borate (Co‐Bi) ultrathin nanosheets/graphene hybrid by a room‐temperature synthesis approach. Benefiting from the high surface active sites exposure yield, enhanced electron transfer capacity, and strong synergetic coupled effect, this Co‐Bi NS/G hybrid shows high catalytic activity with current density of 10 mA cm−2 at overpotential of 290 mV and Tafel slope of 53 mV dec−1 in alkaline medium. Moreover, Co‐Bi NS/G electrocatalysts also exhibit promising performance under neutral conditions, with a low onset potential of 235 mV and high current density of 14.4 mA cm−2 at 1.8 V, which is the best OER performance among well‐developed Co‐based OER electrocatalysts to date. Our finding paves a way to develop highly active OER electrocatalysts.
