Abstract:Highly efficient frequency doubling of a continuous-wave Yb-doped fiber laser with a passively-locked enhancement cavity is achieved. The increase in efficiency is a result of improved transverse mode matching between the fiber and doubling cavities, which is enabled by an alignment method presented here. An optical conversion efficiency as high as 36.8% from a launched 976nm diode pump to a 532 nm green laser is obtained. The maximum 532 nm output is 24.5 W, which is limited by the onset of parasitic oscillations in the fiber laser.

Abstract:Absorption spectra and fluorescence spectra in Er3+-doped phosphate glasses have been measured. Some emission parameters, such as emission cross section, spontaneous emission probability, and fluorescence linewidth of the Er3+-doped phosphate glass, have been calculated. Upconversion of 1.064 μm Nd:YAG laser pulses into intense green 547 nm and red 667 nm light in a Er3+-doped phosphate glass fiber has been achieved. Fluorescence efficiencies of the two signals, green 547 nm and red 667 nm fluorescences, are 1.78 × 10−2% and 4.2 × 10−3%, respectively. The two signals are refered to 4S32→4I152 and 4F92→4I152 radiative transitions by two-photon absorption fluorescence.

Abstract:The infrared imaging detection is an important and promising technology having wide applications. In this work, we report on the frequency up-conversion detection of an image based on sum frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal with a flat-top beam acting as the pump instead of a Gaussian beam, the up-converted image at 525 nm falls in the sensitive band of visible detectors and human eyes. Both theoretical simulations and the experimental results clearly demonstrate that using a flat-top beam as a pump can improve the fidelity of an image after the up-conversion compared with a Gaussian pump beam. Our scheme will be very promising for infrared image detection based on frequency up-conversion.

Abstract:Near-infrared up-conversion lasing in erbium(Er)-yttrium(Y) chloride silicate nanowires was demonstrated when pumped by 1476 nm laser at room temperature. The emission covers a very wide wavelength range (400–1000 nm). A clear threshold for 985 nm peak was observed at a launched average pump power of approximately 7 mW. Above threshold, the intensity increases linearly when turning up the pump power. The full width at half maximum at 985 nm decreases from 1.25 nm to 0.25 nm when reducing the measurement temperature from 30 K to 7 K, which is the narrowest linewidth of 980 nm micro-lasers to date. Our demonstration presents a possible novel method of utilizing up-conversion mechanism in Er-Y nanowire to achieve tunable near-infrared laser, which breaks new ground in the exploration of nanoscale optoelectronic devices operating at near-infrared wavelength.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-efficiency,high-power-nanosecond fiber laser-pumped broadband mid-infrared output based on a linearly chirped PPMgLN crystal.By using a linearly polarized pulsed Yb-doped fiber laser as the pump,we experimentally obtain a 1.22-W broadband mid-infrared laser output under pump power of 10.15 W.The 3-dB bandwidths of the idler and signal output are approxiwately 150 and 13 nm,centering at 3.60 and 1.51 μm,respectively.The measured idler spectrum shows a smooth spectral profile.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:Based on the technique of periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, up-conversion single-photon detection at 1.064-μm is demonstrated. We have achieved a system photon detection efficiency of 32.5% with a very low noise count rate of 45 counts per second by pumping with a 1.55-μm-band single frequency laser using the long-wavelength pumping technique and exploiting volume Bragg grating as a narrow band filter. Replacing the volume Bragg grating with a combination of adequate dielectric filters, a detection efficiency of up to 38% with a noise count rate of 700 counts per second is achieved, making the overall system stable and practical. The up-conversion single-photon detector operating at 1.064 μm can be a promising robust counter and find usage in many fields.

Abstract:Er3+-Yb3+ codoped oxy-fluoro-tungstosilicate glasses with infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescence were prepared by melting quenching in air. The effects of Er3+ doping on the optical properties of the samples were measured by means of techniques such as optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that intense green and red signals centered at 546 and 665 nm, corresponding to the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process, respectively, were simultaneously observed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm at room temperature. The upconversion process was found very sensitive to Er3+ content at a constant Yb2O3 content of 5 mol.%. With the increase of Er3+ content from 0.5% to 1.5%, the upconversion intensity increased gradually. Further increasing of Er3+ content to 3.0% resulted in a significant fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the possible upconversion mechanisms were discussed based on the energy-matching conditions and the quadratic dependence on excitation power.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high power mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator that was pumped by a linearly polarized, pulsed Ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Cascaded parametric conversion was realized to obtain a higher conversion efficiency from the pump of 1.06 mu m to the expected idler similar to 3.8 mu m. A monolithic aperiodically poled magnesium-oxide doped lithium niobate was designed to compensate the phase mismatches of the nonlinear conversions from the pump to idler and the primary signal to idler simultaneously. The highest idler output power of 4.35 W at 3.81 mu m was obtained under the pump power of 24.8 W at 1063.5 nm with pump-to-idler conversion efficiency of 17.5% and slope efficiency of 21.3%.

Abstract:All-fiber ns-pulsed visible laser at λ=521 nm is realized by frequency doubling an Yb-doped fiber laser with a periodically poled silica fiber. A 50-mW second-harmonic (SH) output power is produced that is over 6-orders of magnitude greater than previous results obtained with poled fibers in the visible spectral range. The normalized conversion efficiency of 0.3%/W is to date the largest demonstrated with poled fiber technology. Furthermore, 21% conversion efficiency is achieved for the doubling of 8-ps pulses from a neodymium-doped yttrium vanadate solid-state laser. The advances are made possible by the precision and flexibility offered by using the continuous periodic UV erasure, as opposite to photolithographic methods, for the fabrication of over 20-cm-long χ(2)-gratings for quasi-phase matched SH generation.

Abstract:We report on frequency doubling of 1.55-mu m fiber oscillator-amplifier laser with conversion efficiency of 27% by using off-the-shelf nonlinear crystal. The system generates 135-femto-second (fs) pulses with average power of 110 mW at 80 MHz repetition rate. Abstract:A periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide-based single-pixel up-conversion infrared spectrometer was demonstrated. Sum-frequency generation between a 1.5-mu m-band scanning pump laser and a 1.3-mu m-band signal generated visible radiation which was detected by a silicon single-photon detector. Abstract:An attempt was made to ascertain the influence of body weight on degenerative skeletal diseases in a group of 250 hospitalized patients suffering from gonarthrosis and/or lumbar syndrome. The current average body weight according to age, size and sex (Geigy Tables) were used as the standard. Patients with gonarthrosis were significantly overweight while patients with lumbar syndrome fell within the normal range. A prearthrosis or prearthritic deformity of the vertebral column or knee could be demonstrated in the majority of patients, particularly the younger ones. In most of the older patients, an age-induced reduction in the quality of cartilage and tissue of the intervertebral disk was already present. For the established casual significance of prearthroses, the only possible influence of body weight on the development of alterations is as a contributing factor, to functional strain. A statement cannot be made concerning the importance of this contributing factor for methodological reasons; an essential influence, however, is doubtful. Overweight alone does not tend to induce degenerative skeletal alterations under normal static and occupational conditions.
Efficient parametric conversion for high power mid-infrared laser output

Abstract:We report some of our recent work on the ps pulse bunch mid-IR laser output at 3.8 μm through the quasi-synchronized pump scheme. A modulated DBR LD with pulse repetition rate (PRR) of 138 MHz and pulse duration around 200 ps was applied as the seed laser source after its PRR was multiplied by 8 through four cascaded 2 by 2 couplers. The frequency multiplied seed laser was converted into the pulse bunch with the help of a fiber pigtailed acousto-optic modulator and then amplified in the final linearly polarized fiber power amplifier. The output of the fiber laser was directed to pump a PPMgLN –based optical parametric oscillator. Efficient parametric conversion was realized via the quasi-synchronized pump scheme with a maximum average output power of 7.5 W at 3.8 μm and the 1064 nm pump to the 3.8 μm idler conversion efficiency of 16%.

Abstract:Abstract We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel scheme for efficient mid-infrared difference-frequency generation based on passively synchronized fiber lasers. The adoption of coincident seeding pulses in the nonlinear conversion process could substantially lower the pumping threshold for mid-infrared parametric emission. Consequently, a picosecond mid-infrared source at 3.1 μm was prepared with watt-level average power, and a maximum power conversion efficiency of 77% was realized from pump to down-converted light. Additionally, the long-term stability of generated power was manifested with a relative fluctuation as low as 0.17% over one hour. Thanks to the all-optical passive synchronization and all-polarization-maintaining fiber architecture, the implemented laser system was also featured with simplicity, compactness and robustness, which would favor subsequent applications beyond laboratory operation.

Abstract:We demonstrate upconversion-assisted single-photon detection for the 1.55-μm telecommunications band based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide pumped by a monolithic PPLN optical parametric oscillator. We achieve an internal conversion efficiency of 86%, which results in an overall system detection efficiency of 37%, with excess noise as low as 10(3) counts s(-1). We measure the dark count rate versus the upconversion pump-signal frequency separation and find the results to be consistent with noise photon generation by spontaneous anti-Stokes Raman scattering. These results enable detailed design guidelines for the development of low-noise quantum frequency conversion systems, which will be an important component of fiber-optic quantum networks.

Abstract:We demonstrated a straightforward approach to generate red and near-infrared laser emissions by a Raman-assisted four wave mixing (FWM) process in a nonlinear Yb-doped fiber amplifier, delivering 342 fs pulses of 241 nJ at 864 nm, 834 fs pulses of 21 nJ at 751 nm, and 1.9 ps pulses of 3.8 μJ at 1030 nm. A pair of gratings was employed as the pre-compressor to promote the intensity of the fundamental wave in the main amplifier. Multiple wavelengths from 751 to 1273 nm resulted due to cascaded-Raman-assisted FWM. The pre-compression also underlay the achievement of 25.1, 701, and 2000 kW peak power for the red (751 nm), near-infrared (864 nm), and fundamental (1030 nm) components respectively, which restrained the gain narrowing effect during the amplification. It finally led to shorter pulse duration under increased power.

Abstract:Frequency upconversion for single photons at telecommunication wavelengths is important to simultaneously meet the different wavelengths requirement for long-distance communications and quantum memories in a quantum nodal network. It also enables the detection for the telecommunication “flying qubit” photons with silicon-based efficient single photon detectors with low dark count rates.
