Abstract:The paper deals with the resilience analysis of critical infrastructure systems. An infrastructure system is a network of subsystems, which interoperate through dependencies of various types. The interaction and dependency among the subsystems make the entire infrastructure system more complex and possibly vulnerable. We interpret resilience as a system property related to the prevention of, robustness to and recovery from undesired disturbances and events. Such resilience property of interconnected systems depends also on their structure and design parameters. In this paper, we abstract the structure of the system by a directed graph. A state dynamics is associated to each of the subsystems, with interdependent terms that can represent different types of interdependencies. The system response to undesired disturbances and events could, then, be analyzed using notions from set theory, to identify regions of operation and recoverable or non-recoverable conditions. Moreover, a characterization of the system resilience as a function of the design parameters can be provided, which is useful for resilient design and operation purposes. The benefits of the proposed approach are highlighted through an illustrative, numerical application.
