Abstract:Nowadays,there is a problem of the manganese overrunning for most surface water in China,and it brings great risk to the security of water supply.This study inspects the effects of removal of manganese by potassium permanganate preoxidation.The results show that the removal of manganese in raw water decreased significantly after pretreatment by potassium permanganate,when the dosing quantity of potassium permanganate reaches 0.5mg/l,the concentration of manganese ion in water has already reached the detection limit of atomic absorption,but chroma increased.When the dosage of potassium permanganate and ferrous sulfate is 1 to 4,the removal effect of manganese is good,and also with the increase of the dosing quantity of ferrous ion,the removal rate of manganese decreased.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically explore coagulation behavior, ultrafiltration membrane fouling behavior and the mechanism involved in during the process of pre-oxidation of potassium permanganate and coagulation of aluminum chloride at different condition to treat model pollutants (humic acid, HA) and natural water. The KMnO 4 pre-oxidation significantly enhances flocs formation, and for HA artificial water the flocs size increases from 82 to 122 μm at pH 5.5, from 63 to 185 μm at pH 7.0 and from 0 to 75 μm at pH 8.5, respectively, as for natural water it increases from 72 to 139 μm. The enhanced coagulation at pH 5.5 is attributed to the increased polymeric Al speciation after pre-oxidation along with the generated Mn 2+ damaging the electric double layer structure. And for pH 8.5 it is mainly caused by the in-situ MnO 2 as combination nuclei during pre-oxidation. Besides, for pH 7.0, the combined effect of in-situ MnO 2 and the increased polymeric Al speciation both contribute to improvement of the coagulation. What's more, the enhanced Al coagulation by pre-oxidation of KMnO 4 also helps alleviate the membrane fouling for both HA artificial water and natural water, and a much rougher surface with larger flocs forms after KMnO 4 -aided Al coagulation filtration. This study provides an alternative perspective on the mechanism of pre-oxidation coagulation process.

Abstract:Laboratory and full-scale experiments were conducted for enhancing the coagulation of stabilised surface waters with high organic content by permanganate preoxidation. It was indicated that permanganate preoxidation enhanced both the processes of coagulation and filtration of selected surface waters, River Songhua water, Qitaihe Reservoir water and Ba Reservoir water. Permanganate preoxidation is especially effective for enhancing the coagulation of very stable surface waters with relatively high organic content. Experimental results showed that the manganese dioxide produced in situ during permanganate preoxidation played an important role in enhancing the coagulation and filtration processes. The experimental results suggested that manganese dioxide may adsorb naturally occurring organic materials through surface bonding to form bigger particulates, thus increasing the floc density and improving the removal of organic particulates and possibly the inorganic fine particles. Manganese dioxide was shown to adsorb humic acid and enhance its removal by filtration.

Abstract:In accordance with the characteristics of drinking water source in Tianjin, study was made on the effect of potassium permanganate and ozone pre-oxidation, and their influence on the subsequent air flotation and filtration treatment. The result indicates that pre-oxidation can improve the quality of treated water from the subsequent process, and reduce turbidity and permanganate index. After pre-oxidation, the content of organic matters containing carboxyl and hydroxyl will be increased, and thus improving the coagulability of organic matters, which is the main cause for improvement of treatment effect.

Abstract:Using pyrolysis-GC-MS and HPLC techniques, a series of studies were conducted on the effect of pre-oxidation on the structure of natural humic acids (HA) by ozone and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Both ozone and H2O2 could more or less result in direct removal of organic matter, but the removal of UV254 was much higher than that of TOC, implying that an important function of the oxidants is to change the structure of the organic molecules rather than to decompose them into inorganic matters. The result of pyrolysis-GC-MS analysis showed that in the process of oxidation, the organic functional groups on the HA molecules underwent a significant change in their structure, mostly from cyclic to chain hydrocarbons and/or from aromatics to aliphatics. This process was also accompanied by a decrease in the molecular weight of the HA. With an apparent change in the structure and molecular weight of the HA molecules after preoxidation, a great improvement was seen on the overall removal of TOC as coagulation or GAC adsorption was subsequently applied. Additionally, in the case of H2O2, a small dose of O-3 showed much better catalysing effect than Mn2+, Cu2+ or Fe2+ ions.

Abstract:The coagulation treatment was conducted on the Beijing Jingmi canal water and the Songhua River water potassium permanganate for pre-oxidation. The organic compounds in raw water and treated water are analyzed with the gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer.Based on the Drinking Water Regulations and Health Advisories issued by US Environment Protection Agency (USEPA) in 1997,a preliminary evaluation was carried out to examine human health concerns of the by|products produced during potassium permanganate preoxidation for drinking water treatment.The experimental results showed that the toxic by|products of potassium permanganate oxidation,specified by USEPA,could not be detected under the experimental conditions.It was considered that pre|oxidation using potassium permanganate and the adsorption of newly formed manganese dioxide produced during oxidation process should be responsible.

Abstract:Humic acid (HA) ubiquitously existing in aquatic environments has been reported to significantly impact permanganate (KMnO4) decontamination processes. However, the underlying mechanism of the KMnO4/HA system remained elusive. In this study, an enhancing effect of HA on the KMnO4 oxidation of diclofenac (DCF) was observed over a wide solution pH range of 5-9. Surprisingly, the mechanism of HA-induced enhancement varied with solution pH. Quenching and chemical probing experiments revealed that manganese intermediates (Mn(III)-HA and MnO2) were responsible for the enhancement under acidic conditions but not under neutral and alkaline conditions. By combining KMnO4 decomposition, galvanic oxidation process experiments, electrochemical tests, and FTIR and XPS analysis, it was interestingly found that HA could effectively mediate the electron transfer from DCF to KMnO4 in neutral and alkaline solutions, which was reported for the first time. The formation of an organic-catalyst complex (i.e., HA-DCF) with lower reduction potential than the parent DCF was proposed to be responsible for the accelerated electron transfer from DCF to KMnO4. This electron transfer likely occurred within the complex molecule formed through the interaction between HA-DCF and KMnO4 (i.e., HA-DCF-KMnO4). These results will help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of the role of HA in the KMnO4 oxidation processes.
Effect of permanganate preoxidation in enhancing the coagulation of surface waters - Laboratory case studies

Abstract:Comparative laboratory studies of the effect of permanganate preoxidation in enhancing the coagulation of surface waters from China and the UK were conducted using standard jar tests. In all the cases of this investigation a clear effect has been observed; that of a substantial reduction in the residual turbidity. At low permanganate dosages, e.g. 0.5 mg/L, a satisfactory enhancement of the performance of coagulation of the surface waters has been achieved. The value of using permanganate preoxidation on turbidity removal is particularly evident from the filtrate quality. The reduction of dissolved organics, as indicated by surrogate parameters such as dissolved organic carbon (DOG), UV254 and E-420, was observed to be similar in nature to the reduction of turbidity. It is found that the enhancement in the coagulation of the waters with high organic content by permanganate preoxidation is more obvious. Soluble manganese in the water was found to depend on the coagulation pH of the water. At neutral or moderately acid pH (for example, pH 5.3-7.6) soluble manganese in the filtrate was satisfactorily low (< 50 mu g/L), whilst at lower pH values (for example pH 4.0) the residual soluble manganese concentration increased with increasing permanganate dosage.

Abstract:The effect of dissolved humic acid on the oxidation of phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) by potassium permanganate was studied. It was found that the degradation of phenolic EDCs is promoted to various extents by the addition of humic acid. Results show that the removal rate of estrone by permanganate within 3 min of reaction time is increased from approximately 10% in control experiments to 68% when 0.08 mg l(-1) of humic acid is present in the reaction system. The oxidation experiment of nine types of phenolic EDC by permanganate confirms that the promotion induced by the addition of humic acid varies in the cases of different EDCS. Results also indicate that the promotion induced by the presence of humic acid takes effect under acidic and neutral pH conditions, while the effect of pH plays a dominant role for the degradation of phenolic EDCs under alkaline conditions. Additionally, it was found that the oxidation of estrone by permanganate is promoted through the addition of humic acid to natural waters.

Abstract:The effect of permanganate preoxidation on organic matter removal during the coagulation with aluminum chloride was investigated using tannic acid as a model compound. Results showed that a small amount of KMnO4 (0.75 mg/L) increased the removal efficiency of tannic acid up to 20%, as compared to the process of coagulation by aluminum chloride alone. The key factor enhancing the removal efficiency of tannic acid in preoxidation process was the in situ formation of a reductant manganese dioxide. The complexation model was used to describe the reaction between MnO2 and tannic acid. Under weak pH condition, tannic acid was difficult to be adsorbed by MnO2 due to the static electrical repulsive forces. The presence of Ca2+ served as a bridge to hold the negative charged MnO2 and tannic acid together, which could be a crucial factor influencing tannic acid adsorption by in-situ manganese dioxide.

Abstract:The effectiveness of combined permanganate composite chemicals (PPC) pre-oxidation/BAC process for pollutants removal from surface water was investigated, and was compared with that of single BAC process. The result shows that PPC pre-oxidation enhances the organic removal effect in coagulation process and raises the microbial activity in the subsequent BAC process, and thus greatly improving the effect of BAC process on the removal of pollutants such as organic matters, ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen.

Abstract:Potassium permanganate was selected in studying the variation of AOC in preoxidation process. AOC was increased by 61.5% with the increase of oxidant dosages after coagulation. The AOC was increased by 23.6% only in preoxidation before coagulation. Permanganate preoxidation increased the substrate available for strain P17. The AOC/TOC ratio, which indicated assimilation ability of organic carbon, was increased from 8.2% to 14.0% in the preoxidations. The variation of TOC during permanganate preoxidation resulted from the variation of BDOC. The concentration of NBDOC changed little with the increase of oxidant dosages in the preoxidation processes. Permanganate preoxidation exhibited better coagulation effect with the dosage less than 1.0mg·L <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-1</sup> .

Abstract:Methylene blue dye has been widely used in many industries and usually released in natural water sources, which become a health thereat to human-beings and microbes. This paper demonstrates an oxidation method to remove methylene blue in water. The effect of natural organic matter humic acid, on the degradation of methylene blue using PMS was investigated. The results show that PMS could effectively degrade 50 mg/L methylene blue (>95%) when the PMS concentration was larger than 1.0 mM. Humic acid had either negative or positive impact on the degradation processes because of the co-existence of several competitive degradation mechanisms (I: humic acid competes with methylene blue for PMS; II: humic acid activates PMS to produce sulfate radicals; III: Cl–1 competes with methylene blue for sulfate radicals). This study is expected to provide valuable information to improve in situ remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater in the existence of natural organic matters.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Combined use of permanganate and chlorine has been shown to have synergistic action in disinfection. However, according to the literature the effects of combined preoxidation on coagulation and filtration have not been thoroughly investigated.RESULTS: Laboratory and pilot experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of the combined preoxidation by permanganate and chlorine on the treatment of River Luan water. Based on the reduction of the residual turbidity and UV254 after sedimentation and filtration, the optimum dosages of permanganate and chlorine were selected. The improvement of treated water quality was also achieved in the pilot processes. Permanganate reduced the amount of chlorine, while it enhanced chlorination and reduced trihalomethane production. The enhanced treatment efficiency could be explained by the synergistic effect of the preoxidants themselves and the effect of chlorine and intermediates such as hydrous manganese dioxide, which was formed in situ by permanganate reduction.CONCLUSION: Laboratory and pilot studies demonstrated that combined preoxidation by permanganate and chlorine could enhance water treatment. Abstract:Combined ozone/permanganate preoxidation process for enhancing coagulation was proposed, and the various factors affecting the coagulation aid by combined oxidation were analyzed. The result shows that the combined oxidation is more advantageous to turbidity removal than the preozonation alone. Permanganate is added firstly and then addition of ozone is followed. The optimum dosing ratio is 0.4 mg/L of permanganate and 1.0 mg/L of ozone. The combined oxidation for turbidity removal is affected by the following factors: G value is less sensitive to the combined process with wider range adaptable to the process; coagulation effect is affected by raw water quality, with the optimum effect at hardness of 160 mg/L calculated as CaCO_3, TOC concentration of 3 mg/L has the minimum effect on coagulation; low temperature is helpful to the coagualation by combined oxidation; pH value has slight influence on combined oxidation, which can be used in wider range of pH. As compared with ozonation, the combined oxidation is more adaptable to the variation in hydraulic condition and water quality.

Abstract:Standard jar tests and full-scale plant studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of permanganate preoxidation as an aid to coagulation-flocculation of surface waters. The results of the Jar tests demonstrated that permanganate preoxidation obviously enhanced the coagulation-flocculation of the studied surface waters. Through full-scale plant studies, the positive effects of permanganate assistance in coagulation-flocculation of surface raters were confirmed by the turbidity reduction of about 4~11 FTU at permanganate dosages of 1~2 mg/L. It was observed that the size of flocs in the reaction tank became bigger if the water was preoxidized with permanganate, lowering the polyaluminium chloride (PAC) consumption by about 36%. In addition. the effectiveness of prechlorination and permanganate preoxidation on assisting in coagulation-flocculation were compared through full-scale studies at a water treatment plant using a shallow lake as its water source. showing that permanganate preoxidation was a more effective means to aid coagulation-flocculatlon.

Abstract:The effectiveness of enhanced coagulation of polluted surface water with high organic contents by permanganate composite chemicals has been studied through laboratory jar test. It shows that permanganate composite chemicals oxidation greatly enhances the coagulation of the water,resulting in obvious reduction of residual turbidity of settled water. The oxidation of permanganate composite chemicals widens the optimal dosage range of coagulant and improved the stability of treated water quality. The relationship between the optimal dosage of permanganate composite chemicals and the CODMn of raw water is a double rectangular hyperbola y=4.854x/(25.527+x).

Abstract:Comparative pilot tests were conducted to investigate the coagulation-aid effects of the combined preoxidation by potassium permanganate composites （PPC） with chlorine and preozonation. And the synergistic mechanism of combined preoxidation was discussed. Results showed that 1.0 mg/L PPC with 2.0 mg/L chlorine could further improve the quality of treated water, as indicated by residual turbidity, TOC and algae. The enhanced efficiency could be explained by the synergistic effect of the preoxidants themselves, or the effect of chlorine and the intermediate such as hydrous manganese dioxide, which was generated by potassium permanganate, the main ingredient of PPC.

Abstract:Jar test of pre-oxidation with potassium ferrate (Ⅵ) upon algae removal were conducted using laboratory cultured green-algae. A comparison of the effectiveness of algae removal was also made between pre-oxidation with potassium ferrate (Ⅵ) and coagulation-sedimentation with aluminum sulphate alone. Results showed that humic acid in the water caused the reduction of algae removal efficiency coagulated with aluminum sulphate alone. Pre-oxidation with potassium ferrate (Ⅵ) could reduce significantly the influence of humic acid on algae removal by coagulation, which was one of primary reason for the excellent effectiveness on algae removal by potassium ferrate (Ⅵ). To achieve certain algae removal, pretreatment with potassium ferrate (Ⅵ) could reduce the dosage of aluminum sulphate. In addition, under the condition of low pH value and a prolong pre-oxidation time, algae removal efficiency of pre-oxidation with potassium ferrate (Ⅵ) was further enhanced.
