Abstract:Ecohydrology and hydropedology are two interdisciplinary fields that can be coupled to improve the linkage between aboveground and belowground processes. Connecting multiple scales and identifying self-organizing structures between aboveground and underground processes remain a challenge for improved understanding of coupled soil hydrology and ecosystems. This chapter discusses some key connections between ecohydrology and hydropedology at different spatial and temporal scales in water-limited ecosystems. These connections include: 1) water flow from soil pore to plant stomata at the microscopic scale; 2) aboveground canopy precipitation partitioning and belowground preferential flow at the individual plant scale; 3) vegetation pattern and soil moisture distribution at the patch scale; and 4) surface and subsurface flow networks at the hillslope and catchment scales. Co-evolution of soil and vegetation during land degradation and rehabilitation is highlighted to show the connection between ecohydrology and hydropedology across temporal scales. We conclude this chapter by suggesting some future research needs.
