Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:We showed that cross-gain modulation is dominant over another kind of common signal quality degradation, namely four-wave mixing, in a two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier (OPA) WDM system. We also demonstrated experimentally that the signal quality degradation can be improved significantly by a two-orthogonal-pump OPA (2OP-OPA) over the conventional two-parallel-pump OPA (2PP-OPA).

Abstract:We investigate the suppression of Kerr nonlinearities by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a fiber transmission system without power symmetry by including all the manifestations of the Kerr nonlinearities. We found that OPC cannot completely compensate for all Kerr nonlinearities in absence of power symmetry, and some nonlinearities may become even worse if one of the nonlinearities is fully compensated. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the compensation system to eliminate the most dominating nonlinearity. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the interplay of various kinds of nonlinearities. The need of proper design for transmission systems to suppress the dominating nonlinear effect is shown when all manifestations of Kerr nonlinearity are not compensated simultaneously.

Abstract:The fundamental performance limits of coherent optical transmission systems can be observed by a simple optimization between the linear noise and the nonlinear noise generated within the system. Optical Phase Conjugation (OPC) is considered to be one of the promising techniques to compensate for optical fiber’s dispersion and nonlinearity that cause crosstalk between signals traveling through long-haul optical transmission systems, nonlinearity compensation can lead to significant information capacity and distance reach expansion of optical fiber transmission links. To get the full benefit from the deployment of OPC in optical transmission systems, a few considerations must be taken into account, such as: power profile symmetry, fiber’s dispersion slope and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). In this contribution, we will present our simplified theoretical predictions of optical fiber transmission systems performance that deploy mid-link OPC and multiOPC and we will show that the introduction of multi-OPC in an optical transmission system will minimize the impact of uncompensated/nondeterministic signal-signal nonlinear interactions due to fiber’s PMD and signal-noise interactions. We will show wide range of simulation and experimental results that validate the theoretical predictions of system’s performance for various types of links: dispersion managed, dispersion unmanaged, discretely amplified systems and distributed Raman amplified systems. Also, we will present an extensive experimental study shows that the deployment of mid-link OPC can provide a significant reach improvement in asymmetric lumped optical fiber links when optimizing the span length.

Abstract:An all-optical crosstalk suppression scheme is desirable for wavelength and space division multiplexing optical networks by improving the performance of the corresponding nodes. We put forward a scheme comprising double-stage semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) for wavelength-preserving crosstalk suppression. The wavelength position of the degenerate pump in the optical phase conjugation (OPC) is optimized for signal-to-crosstalk ratio (SXR) improvement. The crosstalk suppression performance of the double-stage SOA scheme for 20 Gb/s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals is investigated by means of simulations, including the input SXR range and the crosstalk wavelength deviation. For the case with identical-frequency crosstalk, the double-stage SOA scheme can achieve equivalent SXR improvement of 1.5 dB for an input SXR of 10 dB. Thus, the double-stage SOA scheme proposed here is more suitable for few-mode fiber systems and networks.

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Kerr nonlinearity in long distance fiber-optic link imposes a fundamental limitation to the capacity of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication systems. Solving the inverse-propagating nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is in principle a fundamental methodology to mitigate fiber nonlinear impairments. However, solving multi-channel coupled NLSE is too complexed to be implemented commercially. It is of great importance to compensate for nonlinear distortions in high baud-rate WDM systems based on the information of one single target channel. In this article, we experimentally study fiber nonlinearity mitigation in an 8 × 512 Gb/s (64Gbaud) polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) Nyquist-WDM system with 960 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) loop transmission. The digital back-propagation (DBP) algorithm based on the target channel is applied, which can compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity. The inter-channel nonlinearity of cross phase modulation (XPM) induces nonlinear polarization scattering and nonlinear phase noise, which are partially correlated over adjacent pulses in high baud-rate systems. We propose an advanced nonlinear polarization crosstalk canceller (NPCC) with a novel decision feedback (DF) update strategy that is called the DF-NPCC, which incorporates the iterative process of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm and can thus mitigate the correlated nonlinear polarization crosstalk and nonlinear phase noise. Through nonlinearity mitigation, the DBP together with the DF-NPCC can achieve a 0.77 dB Q 2 factor promotion. The DF-NPCC can suppress the remaining nonlinear distortions after the single channel DBP, which corresponds to a 0.36 dB Q 2 factor improvement due to inter-channel nonlinear mitigation. Our work indicates XPM distortions can be mitigated with low complexity digital signal processing such as the DF-NPCC based on the single channel information, which provides an attractive solution to compensate inter-channel fiber nonlinearity in high baud-rate Nyquist-WDM systems.

Abstract:Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) is one of the key components for WDM systems to enable greater connectivity and flexibility of the network. Fiber grating based devices seem to be promising candidates for OADMs. Two types of OADMs based on fiber gratings and circulators are demonstrated. A novel structure with cascaded gratings is proposed to reduce the interferometric crosstalk which severely degrades the system performance in the common structure. The add/drop multiplexing experiments of 4-channel WDM signals indicate that in the cascaded gratings structure there is 8 dB reduction of the crosstalk for the added signal compared with the common structure and a complete suppression of the crosstalk for the dropped signal.

Abstract:Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology as an extension of optical networks-on-chip (ONoCs) performance, can be applied to further overcome shortages of low bandwidth and high-power consumption in multiprocessor systems-on-chip. Nevertheless, WDM-based ONoCs (ONoCs_W) can encounter performance degradation and network scalability constraints because of its power loss and intrinsic crosstalk noise, especially the non-linear four-wave mixing crosstalk noise. Here, a formal systematical exploiting for worst-case crosstalk noise and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) in arbitrary fat-tree-based ONoCs with WDM (FONoCs_W) is proposed. Meanwhile, the worst-case OSNR optical link candidates are identified. To verify the proposed analysis method, FONoCs_W employing an optical turnaround router with WDM (WOTAR) is used for case study. The study results demonstrate that crosstalk noise significantly diminishes OSNR and restricts scalability of FONoCs_W. For instance, when input optical signal power equals 0 dBm in worst case, the average OSNR is −9.47 dB, the mean power of crosstalk noise for eight wavelengths is slightly greater than that of signal when the number of processor cores is 64; when it equals to 128, the average OSNR is −34.37 dB, decreased by 24.90 dB compared with the network with 64 processor cores.

Abstract:An approach to improve the pump-to-signal transfer efficiency of the fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with the Bragg wavelength at 1550.1nm is introduced between two high nonlinear fibers (HNLFs) to reduce the first-order idler wave, which lead to the alteration of the relative power and relationships between the involved waves. And the output power of the signal is approximately 10dB increased compared with the absence of the FBG.

Abstract:A low crosstalk structure is proposed and analyzed for the integrative optical add and drop multiplexer/optical cross-connect node (OADM/OXC) that implements the function of the OADM and the OXC simultaneously in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. For joined adding and dropping, a set of 1×2 and 2×1 switches are placed before the cross-connect switches instead of using larger dimensional cross-connect array. Simulation result shows that the power penalty can be decreased significantly in the proposed structure.

Abstract:Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) are key network elements in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Homodyne crosstalk, due to the non-ideal performance of the demultiplexers/multiplexers and the switches, is introduced in OADMs and OXCs and causes system performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a low crosstalk structure for integrative OADM/OXC that implements the function of OADM and OXC simultaneously. For joined adding and dropping, we place a set of 2x2 switches between the demultiplexers and the cross-connect array instead of using larger dimensional cross-connect array. We also theoretical compared the impact of the homodyne crosstalk in the proposed structure and in the conventional integrative OADM/OXC. Simulation result shows that the power penalty caused by homodyne crosstalk can be decreased significantly in the proposed structure. Since the add/drop and cross-connect state of the integrative OADM/OXC changes from time to time for reconfiguration and restoration, and the polarization state of the signals varies constantly due to the thermal and mechanical fluctuations, we statistically analyzed the power penalty distribution. It can be obtained that the power penalty in the proposed structure distributes in a smaller range. This is very helpful to the planning and design of the optical transport networks.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate digital intra-channel nonlinear impairment compensation and inter-channel crosstalk suppression for 4 × 160.8-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission over 1300-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) on a 50-GHz grid with the spectral efficiency of 3.21b/s/Hz, adopting simplified heterodyne coherent detection. By using nonlinear compensation based on DBP with crosstalk suppression based on post filter and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (PF&MLSE), the BER has been improved from 1.0 × 10−3 to 3.5 × 10−4 for 4 × 160.8Gb/s WDM PDM-QPSK with heterodyne detection after 1300km SMF-28 transmission.

Abstract:This paper points out that, in a dynamic optical cross-connect (OXC) of the WDM all optical networks, there exists a kind of coherent crosstalk, the same-source crosstalk. This kind of crosstalk, though originated from the same source but passing through the different light paths, may interference with the signal at the output and impose power penalty on the system. The formulas and their deduction are also given, as well as some examples applying this formulas are presented. The analysis shows that the impact of the same-source crosstalk can cause more severe system degradation than other kinds of same-wavelength crosstalk do. Consequently, it will requires more stringent optical isolation performance of the WDM device as long as conceiving the same-source crosstalk. In this paper, we also proposed a new modification of the OXC structure, in which optical path differences of each wavelength channel are introduced by adding appropriate length of optical fiber. The simulation results show that this new structure can distinctively reduce the impact of the same-source crosstalk, and the crosstalk requirement on optical network elements may be significantly relaxed. Furthermore, the additional hardware cost is very low.
