Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing protocol for the detection of TNT prepared from alkanethiols self-assembled on AuNPs modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode with preadsorbed templates of TNT. It demonstrated that the 2D molecular imprinting monolayers (MIMs) can provide a better site accessibility and lower mass-transfer resistance, while the AuNPs can enhance electrode conductivity, facilitate the electron transfer and increase the amount of TNT-imprinted sites. The prepared sensor showed not only high selectivity toward TNT in comparison to other similar nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), but also a wide linear range over TNT concentration from 4.0×10−8 to 3.2×10−6M with a detection limit of 1.3×10−8M (S/N=3). Moreover, the imprinted sensor has been applied to the determination of TNT in spiked environmental water samples and shows promise for fast and sensitive measurement of trace levels of TNT in real samples.

Abstract:Conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles were prepared by Sonogashira coupling reaction involving a two-step procedure. The resulting conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles are highly fluorescent, and the fluorescent response of the nanoparticles of different size towards electron-deficient trinitrotoluene (TNT) was studied by examining how the steady state fluorescence intensity changes with the concentration of TNT. The conjugated polymer-grafted silica nanoparticles show high sensitivity toward TNT, with a detection limit down to 1μM.

Abstract:In this study, a nanobiosensor for detecting explosives was developed, in which the peptide was synthesized with trinitrotoluene (TNT)-specific sequence and immobilized on nanodevice by Au–S covalent linkage, and the nanocup arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint and deposited with Au nanoparticles to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The device was used to monitor slight change from specific binding of 2,4,6-TNT to the peptide. With high refractive index sensing of ~10 4 nm/RIU, the nanocup device can detect the binding of TNT at concentration as low as 3.12 × 10 −7 mg mL −1 by optical transmission spectrum modulated by LSPR. The nanosensor is also able to distinguish TNT from analogs of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 3-nitrotoluene in the mixture with great selectivity. The peptide-based nanosensor provides novel approaches to design versatile biosensor assays by LSPR for chemical molecules.

Abstract:Carbon dots have been a promising nano-carbon material with many advantages, and attracted many more attentions. This study designed a new chemosensor integrating the strong fluorescent property of carbon dots and the magnetism of amino-functionalized magnetic core-shell nanomaterial, Fe@SiO2-NH2 for determination of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). In this system, fluorescent carbon dots interacted with amino groups on the surface of amino-functionalized magnetic core-shell nanomaterial leading to fluorescence quenching of carbon dots, appearance of TNT competitively replaced of carbon dots on the surface of the magnetic material through forming a Meisenheimer complex. This sensor exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity for TNT, and which provided a good dynamic linear range for TNT from 10 to 2000 ng mL-1. The experiments demonstrate a low detection limit of 2.15 ng mL-1. The intra-day precisions for 25, 100 and 500 ng mL-1 were 4.6, 2.3 and 0.5% (RSD, n = 6), inter-day precisions for 25, 100 and 500 ng mL-1 were 4.2, 2.5 and 0.9% (RSD, n = 6), respectively. The developed sensor was validated with river water, dust, and soil samples, and the achieved spiked recoveries were immensely satisfied from 98.1% to 102.0%. The Fe@SiO2-NH2 possessed excellent reusability. This sensor exhibits that it is simple, sensitive and selective, and will be a vital analytical tool for TNT in many fields.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new generation of porous materials constructed from light elements linked by strong covalent bonds. Herein we present rapid preparation of highly fluorescent nanoparticles of a new type of COF, i.e. melamine-based porous polymeric network SNW-1, by a microwave-assisted synthesis route. Although the synthesis of SNW-1 has to be carried out at 180°C for 3d under conventional reflux conditions, SNW-1 nanoparticles could be obtained in 6h by using such a microwave-assisted method. The results obtained have clearly demonstrated that microwave-assisted synthesis is a simple yet highly efficient approach to nanoscale COFs or other porous polymeric materials. Remarkably, the as-synthesized SNW-1 nanoparticles exhibit extremely high sensitivity and selectivity, as well as fast response to nitroaromatic explosives such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4,6-trinitrophenylmethylnitramine (Tetryl) and picric acid (PA) without interference by common organic solvents, which is due to the nanoscaled size and unique hierarchical porosity of such fluorescence-based sensing material.

Abstract:The detection of nitrophenolic explosives is important in counterterrorism and environmental protection, but it is still a challenge to identify the nitroaromatic compounds among those with a similar structure. Herein, a simple tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics was synthesized and used as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of nitrophenolic explosives (2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol, TNP and 2, 4-dinitrophenol, DNP) in water solution and in a solid state with a high selectivity. Meanwhile, it was found that only hydroxyl containing nitrophenolic explosives caused obvious fluorescence quenching. The sensing mechanism was investigated by using fluorescence titration and 1H NMR spectra. This simple AIE-active probe can potentially be applied to the construction of portable detection devices for explosives.

Abstract:2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) is an important chemical and widely applied in industry. However, on account of its high toxicity, flammability and explosive nature, just trace amounts of TNP may cause potential threats to ecosystem and human security, so it is significant to establish a rapid and reliable method for the detection of TNP. Herein, a novel amphiphilic fluorescent probe TPE-CD was successfully designed and synthesized by the functionalization of hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin with a hydrophobic Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE) fluorophore. Moreover, spherical nanoparticles formed in H2O/CH3OH solution with the increase of water fraction (fw). Fluorescence titration of TNP indicated that TPE-CD exhibited excellent sensitivity to TNP with LOD = 0.31 μmol L−1 and Ksv = 3.06×104 L mol−1. The introduced β-cyclodextrin remarkably enhanced the ability of TPE-CD rather than its precursor TPE-COOH to capture TNP molecules through forming spherical nanoparticles, improving the fluorescence quenching efficiency. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results confirmed that the response mechanism of TPE-CD to TNP involved Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) with PET being predominant. Furthermore, the probe showed excellent selectivity and anti-interference to aqueous TNP samples. Moreover, the test strips prepared by soaking in TPE-CD solution also exhibited good sensitivity to TNP, providing a convenient, rapid and reliable method for the detection of TNP.

Abstract:In this paper, a luminescent metal-organic framework Tb 3+ @tartaric acid-functionalized Zr-MOF (Tb 3+ @UiO-67-bpy-TA, TA = tartaric acid) was prepared by post-synthetic modification (PSM) and used as a fluorescence sensor for the detection of the pesticide nitenpyram (NTP). The fluorescence sensing experiment verified that Tb 3+ @UiO-67-bpy-TA had exceptional sensitivity and selectivity for NTP detection, and the detection limit was calculated to be as low as 1.28 μM. The mechanism studies indicated that competitive UV absorption, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and dynamic quenching contributed to the fluorescence quenching process. In addition, the detection of NTP in tap water and Yellow River water samples by the Tb 3+ @UiO-67-bpy-TA were also investigated using standard addition method, and satisfactory recoveries were achieved.

Abstract:2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) has high explosive risks and biological toxicity, and there has been considerable concern over the determination of TNP. In the present work, fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) stemmed from a green carbon source of pinecone by the facile hydrothermal approach. A novel environment- friendly fluorescent probe was developed to efficiently detect TNP by using the obtained CDs with remarkable fluorescence stability. The fluorescent CDs exhibited obvious excitation dependence with the highest peaks for excitation and emission occurring at 321 and 411 nm, respectively. The fluorescence intensity is significantly reduced by TNP owing to the inner filter effect with the CDs. The probe exhibited good linearity with TNP concentrations in the range of 0.025–20 μg mL −1 , and the limit of detection was as low as 8.5 ng mL −1 . Additionally, the probe proved successful in sensing TNP quantitatively in actual environmental samples with satisfied recoveries of 95.6–99.6%. The developed fluorescent probe offered an environment-friendly, efficient, rapid, and reliable platform for detecting trace TNP in the environmental field.

Abstract:We present a simple and effective fluorescence method for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), which is based on TNT recognition by amine-capped silicon quantum dots (SiQDs). The highly luminescent functionalized SiQDs were obtained by a one-step hydrothermal process, using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as the precursor. The as-prepared SiQDs were directly used as a recognition probe for the detection of TNT because of the strong interactions between the TNT molecule and the SiQDs with an amine group. The formation of Meisenheimer complexes (TNT-amine complexes) could quench the fluorescence of SiQDs by fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Such fluorescence response could be used to quantify TNT over the range of 5-500 nM with a detection limit down to 1 nM, and has been successfully applied for the assay of TNT in spiked tap water. The probe exhibited excellent selectivity. This method has great potential for applications in TNT detection.

Abstract:Reports on using complementary colours for high-contrast ratiometric assays are limited to date. In this work, graphitized carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets and mercaptoethylamine (MEA) capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs were fabricated by liquid exfoliation of bulk g-C 3 N 4 , and by a coprecipitation and postmodification strategies, respectively. Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots were deposited onto g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets through an electrostatic self-assembly to form new nanocomposites (denoted as Mn–ZnS QDs@g-C 3 N 4 ). Mn–ZnS QDs@g-C 3 N 4 can emit a pair of complementary colour light, namely, orange room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) at 582 nm and blue fluorescence at 450 nm. After 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) dosing into Mn–ZnS QDs@g-C 3 N 4 aqueous solution, and pairing with MEA to generate TNT anions capable of quenching the emission of Mn-doped ZnS QDs, the fluorescence colours of the solution changed from orange to blue across white, exhibiting unusual high-contrast fluorescence images. The developed ratiometric chemosensor showed very good linearity in the range of 0–12 μM TNT with a limit of detection of 0.56 μM and an RSD of 6.4 % (n = 5). Also, the ratiometric probe had an excellent selectivity for TNT over other nitroaromatic compounds, which was applied in the ratiometric test paper to image TNT in water, and TNT sensing under phosphorescence mode to efficiently avoid background interference. A high-contrast dual-emission platform for selective ratiometric detection of TNT was therefore established.

Fluorescent Nanofibrous Membranes for Trace Detection of Tnt Vapor

Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple and cost-effective approach for the production of nanofibers and assemblies with controllable structures. In this work, based on sol–gel chemistry and the electrospinning technique, porphyrin-doped nanocomposite fibers with a form of nanofibrous membrane were successfully fabricated without the addition or help of polymers, and were demonstrated as novel fluorescence-based chemosensors for the rapid detection of trace vapor (10 ppb) of explosive. Due to a larger surface area and good gas permeability, these fluorescent nanofibrous membranes exhibit remarkable sensitivity to trace TNT vapor compared to tightly cross-linked silica films, but their sensitivity is strongly dependent upon the morphology and phase aggregation of the used nanofibers. Reducing the diameter and introducing a pore structure into nanofibers can considerably enhance the sensitivity of the resulting materials. The performed experiments suggest that the hierarchically structured, porphyrin-doped nanofibrous membranes are potentially very useful chemosensory materials for detecting trace explosives.

Abstract:A rare combination of dual static and dynamic fluorescence quenching mechanisms is reported, while sensing the nitroexplosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water by a cationic conjugated copolymer PFPy. Since the fluorophore PFPy interacts with TNT in both ground state as well as the excited states, a greater extent of interaction is facilitated between PFPy and the TNT, as a result of which the magnitude of the signal is amplified remarkably. The existence of these collective sensing mechanisms provides additional advantages to the sensing process and enhances the sensing parameters, such as LoD and highly competitive sensing processes in natural water bodies irrespective of the pH and at ambient conditions. These outcomes involving dual sensing mechanistic pathways expand the scope of developing efficient sensing probes for toxic chemical analyte and biomarker detection, preventing environmental pollution and strengthening security at sensitive locations while assisting in early diagnosis of disease biomarkers.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
Electrospun nanofibers of porphyrinated polyimide for the ultra-sensitive detection of trace TNT

Abstract:Nanofibers with distinct luminescent property were facilely fabricated by electrospinning from porphyrinated polyimide and demonstrated as a kind of novel sensory material for trace detection of TNT vapor (10ppb). Covalently bonding of porphyrin fluorophores into the polyimide main chains reduces the aggregation-caused fluorescence self-quenching of porphyrin and improves the physicochemical stability of the polyimide nanofibers. The large surface area-to-volume ratio and hence good gas accessibility endow the porphyrinated nanofibers with much more remarkable fluorescent quenching behavior toward trace TNT vapor than its spin-coating dense film counterparter. Besides TNT, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (PA) and nitrobenzene (NB) could also quench the fluorescence of the porphyrinated nanofibers, but the quenching efficiency is much lower than that of TNT. An apparent binding affinity constant of (2.37±0.19)×107L/mol was calculated from SPR analysis, confirming that the porphyrinated nanofibers is a promising alternative for TNT detection.

Abstract:Radiotherapy is an important component of the multimodality treatment of head and neck cancer. Although an effective treatment for many patients, it can have significant long-term sequelae. In particular, xerostomia – or dry mouth – caused by salivary gland injury is a serious problem suffered by most patients and leads to problems with oral comfort, dental health, speech and swallowing. This article explores the mechanisms behind radiation injury to the major salivary glands, as well as different strategies to minimize and alleviate xerostomia. This includes technical approaches to minimize radiation dose to salivary tissue, such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy and surgical transfer of salivary glands, as well as pharmacologic approaches to stimulate or protect the salivary tissue. The scientific literature will be critically examined to see what works and what strategies have been less effective in attempting to minimize xerostomia in head and neck cancer patients.

Abstract:Rapid and real-time detection of 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol (TNP) is of great importance for the living environment and human health. Herein, we constructed an innovative ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor with fast response and high selectivity based on magnesium and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (Mg, N-CDs) and chromium telluride quantum dots (r-CdTe) self-assembled in zirconium-based metal organic frameworks (UiO-66) combined with imprinted polymers for the detection of TNP. In the protocol, the introduction of UiO-66 with large specific surface area and porosity using as carrier material significantly enhanced the mass transfer rate, which improved the sensitivity of the Mg, N-CDs/r-CdTe@UiO-66@MIP (LHU@MIP). And the Mg, N-CDs with high quantum yields and r-CdTe were selected as fluorescence emitting elements to yield fluorescence signal, achieving signal amplification. The dual-channel strategy enabled the sensor to not only display a fast fluorescence response, but also generate a dual-response signal under the action of internal filtering effect (IFE). Combining these advantages, the LHU@MIP had a wide linear range (1–100 μM), good detection sensitivity (0.56 μM), and a distinct color change (from blue to pink). Meanwhile, for accurate on-site analysis, we designed a portable smart sensing platform with a color recognizer application. The smartphone enabled visual sensing of TNP by capturing fluorescent images and converting them into digital values. More importantly, the platform was successfully utilized for the analysis of TNP in the simulated actual samples with considerable results. Therefore, the developed platform was characterized by low cost, portability, ideal specificity, and provided a strategy for on-site monitoring of TNP.

High-performance TNT Chemosensory Materials Based on Nanocomposites with Bimodal Porous Structures

Abstract:A series of porphyrin or metalloporphyrin-doped silica films with bimodal porous structures were successfully fabricated using polystyrene spheres and a surfactant (CTAB) as structure-directing agents, and examined for chemosensory applications to detect trace amounts of vapours of explosives such as TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), DNT (2,4-dinitrotoluene) and NB (nitrobenzene). The obtained results clearly show that an appropriate combination of macropores and mesopores can achieve high molecule permeability and high density of interaction sites (sensing elements-analyte). As a result, silica films with bimodal porous structures exhibit much more efficient fluorescence response capability than single modal porous films. Films with extremely high fluorescence quenching efficiency towards TNT (10 ppb), close to 55% after 10 s of exposure, were achieved, which is nearly double those of conjugated-polymer based TNT sensor materials. Using toluene washing, the sensory properties of the constructed films can be easily recovered. Besides the remarkable TNT detecting capability, these hybrid films have several advantages over other fluorescence-based sensory materials, such as a simple preparation approach, inexpensive materials, recognition ability of different nitroaromatics as well as stability of organic sensing elements in inorganic matrices. These results suggest that this new kind of mesostructured nanocomposite is a potentially useful chemosensory material for rapidly detecting trace explosives.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has undergone an important development in the detection and identification of extremely low traces of explosives over the past few years. Here we fabricated a new type of three-dimensional (3D) SERS sensors by loading on bacterial cellulose aerogels for the detection of 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). The aerogel substrates with hierarchical pore structure are favored by the construction of dense 3D hot-spot distribution and the enrichment of TNT molecules. The retention aid of polyethyleneimine was used to improve the loading capacity as well as prevent the aggregation of nanoparticles. Moreover, were modified with p-aminobenzenethiol to improve the affinity of SERS substrates to TNT via the formation of Meisenheimer complex. Owing to the unique structure and morphology of , the composite SERS substrate can detect trace TNT with a limit of detection of 8 × 10-12 g/L and the SERS enhancement factor is high up to 1.87 × 108.

Abstract:A method is presented to acquire the absorption cross sections of dopants in photorefractive lithium niobate crystals utilizing doubly doped samples. The absorption cross section of one dopant must be well known. By illumination with ultraviolet light, electrons are transferred from one centre to the other. From the changes of the absorption spectra, the absorption cross section of the centre under investigation is deduced. For a wavelength of λ = 577 nm the absorption cross section of Mn3+ is determined by this method to be σMn3+,577 nmo = (9.2 ± 1.3) × 10−19 cm2 for ordinarily polarized light. The described method can be adapted to other dopants and host materials.
