Abstract:We numerically investigate the polarization-dependent coupling in dual-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) selectively filled with gold wires in air holes. It is shown that the even and odd supermodes exhibit significantly different dispersion and loss when one gold wire is filled in between two cores. The enhanced birefringence and polarization-dependent attenuation of the supermodes support the separation of two orthogonally polarized components as well as polarization-dependent transmissions with a high degree of polarization in gold-filled dual core PCFs. Our study suggests that a gold-filled PCF coupler is a new possibility for applications on polarization beam splitters and polarizers. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:The polarization dependence of light coupling in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with sixfold symmetric dual cores and highly birefringent dual cores are numerically investigated. The characteristics of PCF-based couplers, such as coupling length, extinction ratio and form birefringence, are examined as functions of the air-hole size and pitch. The silica bridges between air holes take an important role in the energy transfer across the two cores. We believe that the mechanism of light coupling in PCF-based couplers is different from that of conventional waveguide couplers. The polarization dependent coupling can be reduced by adjusting the air holes around the cores of PCFs. On the other hand, the polarization dependent coupling can be enhanced by introducing high birefringence in the two cores.
Modified D-type surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for application as a polarization filter and refractive index sensor

Abstract:A surface-modified D-type photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is reported for application as a polarization filter and refractive index sensor. The gold film is deposited on the surface of the designed fiber structure to stimulate the SPR effect. Through etching, the upper surface of the designed structure forms an angle of 170°. The etching angle changes the distance between the fiber core and the surface of gold film to enhance the local field SPR effect. The designed optical device is numerically simulated using the finite element method (FEM), the mode distribution is studied, and the coupling phenomenon is analyzed. At a wavelength of 1.31 μm, the y-polarization loss is 1307.90 dB/cm, while the loss of x-polarization is 1.13 dB/cm; at 1.55 μm, the y-polarization loss is 1755.19 dB/cm, while the x-polarization loss is only 1.24 dB/cm. In the case of the same structure parameters as the proposed polarization filter, of which communication window is 1.55 μm, the designed structure also serves as a refractive index sensor from 1.330 to 1.365. The average sensitivity of the refractive index sensor is up to 4857 nm/RIU, and the highest sensitivity is 7588 nm/RIU when the refractive index is 1.365. The results show that the reported SPR-based PCF simultaneously implements dual communication window polarization filtering and refractive index sensing. Hence, the designed device has promising applications with good filtering and sensing performance.

Abstract:A novel plasmonic nodeless hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (NHC-PCF) is proposed based on selective metal incorporation in the cladding tubes. The polarization filtering characteristics of the plasmonic NHC-PCF are investigated in detail. The effects of the fiber structural parameters such as cladding tube thickness, tube diameter, tube gap, and core diameter on the polarization characteristics are fully discussed. The coupling mechanism between core modes and specific surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes at resonant wavelengths is analyzed, which clarifies the different confinement losses of core modes in two perpendicular directions for both gold-filled and gold-coated NHC-PCFs. In addition, enhanced polarization filtering function can be implemented by double gold incorporation structures, especially, the particular SPP supermode coupling is noticed. The in-fiber NHC-PCF polarizers with the wavelength range of 1310-1550 nm are then designed. Our detailed results will benefit understanding of SPPs in the hollow-core PCFs and accelerate realization of the compact NHC-PCF polarization devices and their wide applications.

Abstract:A single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coupler is designed and investigated by using full-vector finite-element method with the anisotropic perfectly matched layer. We numerically analyze the SPSM coupling properties with respect to the structure parameters and confinement loss characteristics. The results reveal that the coupling length between dual cores is as small as millimeter order of magnitude due to the wide silica bridge of energy transfer, and the SPSM coupling region can be tailored to cover the communication windows of 1.3 or 1.55 mu m with optimized design parameters. Moreover, the confinement loss of x polarization is 3 orders of magnitude larger than that of y polarization in single polarization range. The proposed SPSM PCF coupler may find application in polarization-sensitive systems. (C) The Authors. Published by SPIE.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of high performance and small size incompatibility, as well as limited bandwidth, of traditional polarization filters in optical communication systems, this work presents an all-fiber polarization filter using dual elliptical gold layer deposited photonic crystal fiber by the finite element tool. The gold layers are plated on the inside of the two elliptical holes to create surface plasmon resonance effect, which cause the signal intensity in x-polarized direction to be much greater than that in y-polarized direction. The simulation results illustrate that when hole-to-hole pitch Ʌ is 2.0 μm, cladding hole diameter d1 is 2.0 μm, two inner-holes' diameter d2 is 0.3 μm, spacing between two inner-holes ds is 0.755 μm, the major axis length of elliptical holes a is 2.0 μm, the minor axis length of elliptical holes b is 0.97 μm, the gold thin layer t is 100 nm, the proposed PCF filter exhibits good filtering performance at the communication wavelength of 1.55 μm, where the confinement loss in x- and y-polarized direction are 303.91 dB/cm and 0.06 dB/cm, respectively. The crosstalk and operating bandwidth improve with the increment of device's length, the 800 μm-long PCF filter possesses the maximum crosstalk of -211.14 dB and the bandwidth of 600 nm. Finally, the experimental scheme is also discussed. We believe that this photonic filter can play a significant role in optical communication, optical sensing, spectral analysis, and other related fields.

Performance analysis of a photonic crystal fiber polarization filter filled with different materials

Abstract:A compact square photonic crystal fiber polarization filter with high performance is proposed. Two larger holes filled with different metal and fluid are designed to break the strict structure symmetry and forming high birefringence. Four small pores are designed to provide a wider channel for the coupling between defect mode and core mode. Its filtering and coupling characteristics are analyzed by the full vector finite element method. In addition, the properties of PCF filled with different materials are compared and discussed. Different metal materials have different dielectric constants, different optical damping, interband transitions, molecular structure, and physicochemical properties, which make their transmission modes and coupling strength different. The results show that the performance of a PCF filter filled with gold and liquid is the best, which is very suitable for an adjustable PCF polarization filter. The calculation results show that the extinction ratio of the designed filter can reach 5383 dB for a device length of 3 mm; the unwanted fiber loss can reach 2073 dB/cm; and the applicable bandwidth of 2000 nm covers almost the whole communication band. The proposed polarization filter shows large unwanted loss, high extinction ratio, wide bandwidth and coordination, which make it a good candidate for excellent optical fiber filter devices.

Abstract:In order to realize the performance optimization and function expansion of modern all-optical systems, this work presents a compact plasmonic photonic crystal fiber (PCF) filter, using finite element tool. The deposited gold and graphene layers within the elliptical pores interact with the transmitted light, creating surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect that amplifies the energy difference between x- and y-polarized light greatly. The simulation results indicate that the structural parameters are configured with the cladding holes' diameter of 0.6μm, the large-holes' diameter of 1.2μm, the inner small-holes' diameter of 0.2μm, the lattice constant of 2.0μm, the elliptical holes' minor axis length of 0.45μm, the elliptical holes' major axis length of 1.30μm, the gold layer thickness of 50nm, and the graphene layer thickness of 20nm, the central wavelength of the proposed PCF filter is 1.56μm. When the length of this PCF filter is 1mm, a maximum extinction ratio (ER) of 133dB, an operating bandwidth exceeding 800nm, covering two common communication windows of 1.31μm and 1.55μm, as well as a low insertion loss (IL) of 0.59dB can be achieved. What's more, the feasibility of fabricating the device is also examined. This filter with compactness, broadband and high-extinction demonstrates promising applications in optical communication, optical sensing, optical computing, and various other fields.

Abstract:We study the birefringence and polarization coupling in the index-guiding photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with squeezed hexagonal crystal lattice. The sign of form birefringence in such photonic crystal fibers can be changed as the wavelength changes, which is reported for the first time to our knowledge. A PCF-based polarization splitter with squeezed hexagonal lattice is proposed to achieve excellent extinction ratio and a simpler structure than those reported previously.

Abstract:An ultra-broad band single-polarization single-mode photonic crystal fiber (SPSM-PCF) is investigated based on zero order surface plasmon polariton mode by using the full vector finite element method (FEM). Highly wavelength-dependent transmission is obtained because of the band gap-liked effect of the bonding zero-order surface plasmon polariton mode stimulated over the interface of gold/liquid. With a filled RI of 1.52, the polarization extinction is higher than 30dB/cm among a large bandwidth of 360nm in the second communication window. The proposed SPSM-PCF also presents a large tolerance of the size deviation of gold-coated layer.

Abstract:We use the end-facet of a solid-core polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) as a platform on which to fabricate resonant plasmonic nanostructures. Solid-core PM-PCFs can be excited in a polarization-aligned single mode by supercontinuum light, so they are well-suited to the wavelength-interrogation of resonant plasmonic nanostructures, especially supporting complex spectra over a broad spectral range. The nanostructures implemented consist of an array of heptamer-arranged nanoholes formed in a thin Au film. The nanoholes were milled with a He+ focused ion beam, with the array polarization-aligned in situ to cover the solid core of the PM-PCF. Transmittance spectra, measured using a supercontinuum source coupled to the input of the PM-PCF, reveal a rich set of Fano resonances associated with localized and propagating surface plasmons. The measured spectra are compared to computations in order to identify the resonant modes. The spectra redshift as the medium covering the nanoholes changes from air to oil, anticipating application to sensing.

Abstract:A simple single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coupler with two cores is introduced. The full-vector finite-element method (FEM) is applied to analyze the modal interference phenomenon of the even and odd modes of two orthogonal polarizations and the power propagation within the two cores. Meanwhile, the SPSM coupling wavelength range and its corresponding coupling length for different structure parameters are numerically analyzed. The numerical results show that SPSM coupling can be realized with a broad range of wavelength, and the coupling length can be of millimeter magnitude. Moreover, the SPSM coupling wavelength range and the coupling length can be optimized by designing proper mirco-structure parameters of the coupler.

Abstract:A novel type of hybrid-core photonic crystal fiber is proposed, whose core is composed of center-directionally decrescent air holes arrayed as pentagonal and an octagonal structure. Characteristics of the proposed PCF are analyzed theoretically by using all vector finite element method (V-FEM). Results show that high-birefringence and negative dispersion are obtained over the wavelength range from 0.8 mu m to 1.8 mu m, and the maximum of birefringence reaches 1.36x10(-2) and negative dispersion achieves -600 ps.nm(-1).km(-1)similar to-60 ps.nm(-1).km(-1), which will fulfill the requirement of high-birefringence polarization maintaining fiber fabricating and wideband dispersion compensating.

Abstract:Miniaturized and broadband polarization-dependent filters with high crosstalk values are extremely desirable for practical applications in the fields of optical communications and sensing. A miniaturized photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with highly broadband polarization filtering properties is proposed in this paper. Two relatively large air holes coated with a gold film on opposite sides of the liquid crystal-filled offset core are introduced in this PCF structure to produce highly broadband polarization-dependent filtering transmissions. The impacts of the filtering properties with variable structural parameters have been studied based on the finite element method. By altering the gold film thickness (t) to be 18.7 nm and 13.8 nm, the proposed broadband polarization filter offers high resonance peaks of 2041.79 dB/cm and 2342.88 dB/cm for y-polarized mode at the wavelengths of 1.31 μm and 1.55 μm, while the corresponding loss for x-polarized one is 0.10 dB/cm and 0.83 dB/cm, respectively. Moreover, the crosstalk of the 100-μm-long PCF polarization filter with t = 18.7 nm and t = 13.8 nm is up to 177.34 dB and 203.43 dB at 1.31 μm and 1.55 μm, respectively. As the fiber length is 100 μm, the bandwidth with the crosstalk less than − 20 dB can be up to 1200 nm, from 1.2 to 2.4 μm. In addition, the proposed broadband and miniaturized PCF filter is not sensitive to the temperature variation and exhibits stable filtering characteristics with the ± 1% fabrication tolerances.

Abstract:An elliptical-hole photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is proposed, which can work as a tunable single-polarization band-stop filter (BSF). Theoretical results show that the proposed structure is very sensitive to the polarization of the guided modes, due to its high birefringence coefficient and strong SPR effect. It can achieve single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) filtering without liquid filled in the gold coated air holes. At resonant wavelength, the loss of the y polarization fundamental mode reaches 792.16 dB cm−1, but the loss of the x polarization fundamental mode is only 0.52 dB cm−1, causing that the extinction ratio is as high as 688 dB and the bandwidth is larger than 520 nm with the PCF length of 1 mm. When liquids with the refractive index (RI) ranging from 1.44 to 1.48 are filled in the gold coated air holes, the PCF could be used as a BSF to filter the x polarization fundamental mode selectively on the premise of SPSM filtering. And the center wavelength of the BSF is extremely sensitive to the liquid RI with a high sensitivity of 16 820 nm/RIU, which indicates a potential application in RI sensing. The proposed PCF realizing the integration of SPSM filter and BSF is available for compact optical communication systems.

Abstract:A novel polarization splitter based on photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with two nonidentical cores is proposed. The two highly birefringent cores are vertically arranged to obtain polarization selective coupling. The horizontal polarization exchanges its energy between the two cores. However, the vertical polarization shows little coupling between the two cores. This is achieved in single-material glass waveguides for the first time to our knowledge. The PCF-based polarization splitter exhibits many advantages such as shorter length, high extinction ratio, and wide bandwidth over its counterparts.

Abstract:We propose a novel polarization-maintaining index-guiding photonic crystal fiber (PCF). It is composed of a solid silica core and a cladding with squeezed-hexagonal-lattice elliptical air holes. Using a full-vector finite-element method, we study the modal birefringence of the fundamental modes in such PCFs. Numerical result shows that very high modal birefringence with a magnitude of the order of 10(-2) around 1550 nm has been obtained. Furthermore, large normal dispersion appears over a wide range of wavelengths in both orthogonal polarizations. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.
