Abstract:To meet the requirements of the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology project, an upgrade of the AMS facility at Peking University has been carried out, commencing in 1996, and a new sample preparation system with high efficiency and low memory has been set up in the Department of Archaeology. A NEC MC-SNICS ion source has been installed and the injection system has been reconstructed. Computer control of the beam line has been implemented using Group 3 ControlNet, and a; new data acquisition system has been developed. The alignment and vacuum of the beam line have also been improved. The upgraded system was commissioned in 1998. Subsequent experience has led to efficient procedures for beam tuning and C-14/C-13 measurement. A precision of 0.5% in the C-14/C-13 ratio has been achieved. Many samples have now been measured for the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology project. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper introduces the developments of AMS and its applications in China. The AMS at PKU has been upgraded recently and a precision better than 0.5% for 14C measurement can be reached. Hundreds of samples were dated for the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project and AMS played an important role in the establishment of chronological framework of those three dynasties. Geological and biomedical studies were also carried out on PKUAMS. AMS at CIAE has measured quite a lot of radionuclides and various detection techniques such as conversed PIXE, gas-filled magnet and gas-filled TOF have been studied. SINR developed an AMS based on a mini-cyclotron and its performance has been improved continuously.

Abstract:The determination of cosmogenic 53Mn in terrestrial archives has important applications, such as burial ages, exposure age and erosion rates. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the most sensitive technique to detect minute amounts of 53Mn. 53Mn measurements were developed at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) using the ΔE-Q3D equipped AMS system. This approach was recently optimized with the goal to reach the sensitivity required for AMS measurements of 53Mn in deep-sea ferromanganese crust (DSFC) samples. Based on these improvements of sample preparation, current beam transmission and so on, 53Mn in two samples of DSFC was measured by AMS. The ratios of 53Mn/Mn corresponding to an age of 3.77±0.42 and 13.73±2.74Ma by 129I dating method are (5.01±2.15)×10−13 and (1.90±0.96)×10−13. The ratios are close to the experimental reference values, deduced from the previous research. The experimental progress, performances and results are presented in this contribution.

Abstract:AMS radiocarbon measurements were started at Peking University in 1992 with a modified HICONEX 834 ion source. Some archaeological samples were measured at a sensitivity of 10−14 with ca. 1.7% precision for modern samples. We have made many improvements in our first two years of operation: a high-intensity Cs sputtering ion source was installed; the graphite sample preparation technique was investigated; and the system stability has been improved. The blank sample background is currently ca. 0.006 MC and a precision within 1% can be reached for modern samples. Geological, archaeological, environmental and biomedical samples can be measured routinely. We present some typical applications.

Abstract:Some important work worldwide in environmental science, like urban air pollution, discharges of radioactive wastes from nuclear plants, and global climate change were introduced. Based on the improvements of facility and studies on 14 C dating method, a precision better than 0.5 % has been reached for the PKUAMS. A large number of samples have been measured for the Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology project. 14 C data of PKUAMS have made important contributions to creation of more reliable chronological table of Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties. The improvements of PKUAMS are of benefit to the applications in environmental science in the future.

Abstract:A compact AMS facility which is special used for further analyzing atmospheric pollution especially in north China via carbon-14 measurement was developed at CIAE (China Institute of Atomic Energy), This machine is a single acceleration stage AMS, running with the highest accelerate voltage of 200kV, The control system is based on distributed Ethernet control system, using standard TCP/IP protocol as main communication protocol. In order to connect to the main control network freely, device-level data-link layers were developed also. A LabVIEW client, developing virtual machine applied environment, provides friendly graphical user interface for the devices management and measurement data processing.

Abstract:The determination of uranium isotopic composition in ultra-trace U samples is very important in different fields, especially for the nuclear forensics. A new Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) technique has been developed for the measurement of uranium isotopic ratios in ng level uranium samples at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). Recently, the method was further optimized and developed by using a series of blank and standard samples. The results show that the 236U at the femtogram level can be determined in nanogram U samples by the newly developed AMS technique at CIAE. The experimental setup, performances and results will be detailed in this contribution.

Abstract:A dedicated tandem based AMS facility was constructed and put into operation at Peking University. Preliminary applications to the carbon dating of archaeological samples are performed at a background level of 10(-14) with an accuracy better than 1.7%. The designed features of the system as well as the measured beam emittance and transmission efficiency are presented. The suppression of background and fractionation effect and the precision of the measurements are discussed.

Abstract:The Peking University accelerator mass spectrometer (PKUAMS) has been put into routine operation. 14C measurements of archaeological samples with fast cycling injection have shown good results. The new multi-target high-intensity sputtering ion source has been tested and 10Be measurements were carried out with a new detector in which both the stopping of the intense flux of 10B ions and the identification of 10Be ions are performed. 26A1 samples were also measured. While various applications show good prospects for PKUAMS, further upgrade is desirable.

Abstract:A compact 14C AMS system manufactured by the National Electrostatics Corporation has been installed at the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics, Peking University. The system is based on a Model 1.5SDH-1 Pelletron accelerator with a maximum terminal voltage of 0.6MV. The 14C measurement accuracy with this system is better than 0.4% and the machine background is lower than 0.03pMC. The performance of the new system, especially the background and the δ13C measurements, is presented. Several important applications are also described briefly.

Abstract:A home-made AMS system dedicate to 14C measurements was built and tested at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The system is a kind of a single stage AMS system with a working voltage of 230 kV. The overall dimensions of the system are 4.6 × 2.4 m2. After the system was installed, systematic experiments have been carried out to optimize the system performance. In these test experiments, 14C measurements with precision of 0.8% and a background level of 0.6 pMC were achieved. Details of the system and the experimental performance are given.

Abstract:Accelerator mass spectrometry(AMS) is the most sensitive analytical technique for measuring long-lived radionuclides, which is widely used in the fields of environment, geology, archaeology and physics. In recent years, the miniaturization of AMS device has been greatly developed in the world. In order to develop miniaturized AMS devices and their analysis technology, China institute of atomic energy has independently developed a single-stage AMS device with an acceleration voltage of 0.2 MV and a tandem AMS device with an terminal voltage of 0.3 MV, respectively. Based on the single-stage AMS device, the high efficiency transport technique and background eliminating method have been developed for 14C measurement, and realized the high sensitivity measurement of 14C. The measurement sensitivity reaches 14C/12C (atomic number ratio)=2×10–15. Using the 0.3 MV tandem AMS device, the gas stripping conditions, background eliminating and detection methods of 129I at low ion energy were systematically studied, and the high efficient transmission and high sensitive measurement methods of 129I were established, the sensitivity is 129I/127I=1×10–14. This is the first time to develop miniaturized AMS devices in China, which lays the foundation for the localization of AMS.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe second home-made single stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS) system dedicated to radiocarbon (14C) measurements was built after the first SSAMS system was moved to Guangxi Normal University. With some improvements to the second SSAMS system, the performance has been improved. With the conditions of total ion energy of 200KeV, ions charge states of 1+ and helium as stripper gas, 14C measurements with precision of 0.5% and a background level of 0.5 pMC were achieved. Details of the system and the experimental performance are given here.

Abstract:The man-made calcium isotope Ca-41 is an ideal tracer for the study of calcium metabolism. We represent the first application of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurement of Ca-41 tracer in China. The technique is being applied to the research field of cell messenger at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The sample preparation methods and the AMS measurements are discussed and some interesting results are presented.

Abstract:At the initial stage of the PKUAMS, techniques were developed to make 10Be measurements on geological samples and a series of samples from deep sea sediment cores were analyzed. During the past few years, a major system upgrade on PKUAMS was carried out and significant improvement in precision was achieved in 14C measurements for the project of Xia–Shang–Zhou Chronology and other application projects. Recently, to meet the challenge of a variety of new applications of AMS measurement of cosmogenic nuclides in earth sciences, we have attempted to extend our AMS work on 10Be to terrestrial sediments, particularly the 10Be concentrations in Chinese loess. Here we report some preliminary results of our investigation. Our discussion will be focused on the techniques of sample preparation and the approaches used to improve the 10Be measurement with the upgraded PKUAMS system.

Abstract:Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is one of the most promising methods to detect minute amounts of Hf-182. However, the sensitivity of 5 x 10(-11) for Hf-182/Hf-180 obtained previously by the AMS method at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) cannot meet the requirement of some applications. We present some new improvements of measurement method for AMS measurement of Hf-182 at the CIAE HI-13 tandem accelerator system. As a result, a sensitivity of 1.0 x 10(-11) for Hf-182/Hf-180 is achieved.

Abstract:CN analyzer was already applied in CO2 preparation system for AMS dating in the Research Lab for Archaeology & the History of Art in Oxford several years ago [1]. Now a line of combustion with an Elementar Vario EL CHNS elemental analyzer was built in the Dating Lab in the Department of Archaeology at Peking University. This system has many advantages, such as obtaining purer CO2, simultaneously measuring C, N, S etc. elements and C/N. A sample gases (i.e., CO2, CO etc.) recollection system was also built in this lab to recover the CO2 in case of the failure of graphitization.

Abstract:In the PKUAMS injection system upgrade project, we adjusted the ion source parameters to get better Cs focus and the smallest emittance and we also redesigned the sample changing mechanical structure. This provides for a more reliable sample change process. The other improvement is that we have rebuilt injection control system by using an industrial personal computer. It is more stable, reliable and easy to use. With the improvement of sample preparation and optimization of the beam optics, now, PKUAMS has the ability to measure the sample which is less than 100 μgC.
