Abstract:This study focuses on the rotating target imaging and parameter estimation with narrowband radar echoes, which is essential for radar target recognition. First, a two-dimensional (2D) imaging model with narrowband echoes is established in this paper, and two images of the target are formed on the velocity-acceleration plane at two neighboring coherent processing intervals (CPIs). Then, the rotating velocity (RV) is proposed to be estimated by utilizing the relationship between the positions of the scattering centers among two images. Finally, the target image is rescaled to the range-cross-range plane with the estimated rotational parameter. The validity of the proposed approach is confirmed using numerical simulations.
Near-Field Micro-Doppler Effect and Spectrum Characteristics of Rotating Targets: Theoretical Analysis and Parameter Estimation Method.

Abstract:Micro-Doppler effect is of great significance in radar-based rotating target detection, classification, and micromotion monitoring leveraging on the containing rich physical information. However, there is a lack of theoretical analysis for spectrum characteristics of the near-field micro-Doppler signal of rotating targets, and the targets with 2-D and 3-D complex-shaped blades in reality are commonly not considered. Furthermore, the rotating parameter estimation is mainly depends on the traditional time-frequency distribution (TFD) method, which has limitations in stability, efficiency, and practicability. In this article, a theoretical analysis method with the Taylor formula and Jacobi-Anger formula expansion for spectrum characteristics of the near-field micro-Doppler signal is proposed. The characteristics of spectral line interval and critical frequency are theoretically demonstrated by the established analytical expression of the spectrum. Then, the proposed approach is broadened to the 2-D blade model of arbitrary shape and the 3-D blade model of complex space surface. Based on the theoretical analysis, the spectrum characteristic-based parameter estimation (SCPE) method for rotation motion parameter extraction is provided. Finally, the high accuracy, high efficiency, and good stability of the proposed SCPE method are demonstrated by simulations and experiments with various scenarios, offering an appealing near-field and far-field micro-Doppler analysis approach of rotating targets with blades of various shapes.
Radar Maneuvering Target Motion Parameter Estimation Based on Hough Transform and Polynomial Chirplet Transform

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of estimating the motion parameters of a low-observable high-speed maneuvering target with high-order motions, where the target’s complex motions will result in the range migration (RM) and Doppler frequency migration (DFM) effects within the observation time interval, which will significantly affect the radar performance. Based on the Hough transform (HT) and the polynomial Chirplet transform (PCT), a novel method for the motion parameter estimation, which we coin as HPCT, is proposed in this paper. It first employs the trajectory feature extracted from the image of range profiles by the HT to correct the first-order RM and resolve the Doppler ambiguity. Then, it compensates the residual range curvature and the DFM with the motion parameters estimated from the time-frequency ridge, which is extracted from the highly concentrated time-frequency representation (TFR) generated by the PCT. After that, the energy of radar returns can be coherently integrated along the target’s moving trajectory. In addition, we evaluate the parameter estimation performance, integration performance and computational cost of the proposed method via theoretical analysis or numerical experiments. The results show that in terms of the anti-noise ability, cross-term interference avoidance, measurement accuracy and computational complexity, the HPCT is superior to some common methods for the motion parameter estimation. Finally, we extend it to the scenario of multiple targets with different motion orders.

A Method for Characterizing a Target in Polarimetric Radar Remote Sensing

Abstract:A method for characterizing a target is proposed in this paper, based on the eigenvalue decomposition of a scattering matrix. From this method, a set of parameters is derived. The parameters are not only independent of the spans of the scattering matrices, but also independent of the target orientation angles. With these parameters, we enhance the contrast between the road and forest of a SAR image, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed parameters.

Abstract:Vortex electromagnetic wave radar carrying orbital angular momentum can compensate for the deficiency of planar electromagnetic wave radar in detecting motion parameters perpendicular to the direction of electromagnetic wave propagation, thus providing more information for target recognition, which has become a hot research field in recent years. However, existing research makes it difficult to obtain the acceleration and rotation centers of targets under non-quasi-axial incidence conditions of vortex electromagnetic waves. Based on this, this article proposes a variable speed motion target parameter extraction method that combines single element and total element echoes. This method can achieve three-dimensional information extraction of radar targets based on a uniform circular array (UCA). Firstly, we establish a non-quasi-axis detection echo model for variable-speed moving targets and extract echoes from different array elements. Then, a single element echo is used to extract the target's range slow time profile and obtain the target's rotation center z coordinate. We further utilize the target linear, angular Doppler frequency shift extremum, and median information to extract parameters such as target acceleration, tilt angle, rotation radius, and rotation center x and y coordinates. We analyzed the impact of different signal-to-noise ratios and motion states on parameter extraction. The simulation results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A new method for estimating the rotational motion of a noncooperative target is presented by exploiting the 2-D space-variant characteristic of inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging. With a space-time analysis technique, the position variation of every extracted scattering center in both the range and cross-range directions can be utilized for rotation estimation. This method differs substantially from conventional methods that exploit high-order terms of the Doppler frequency, i.e., only the position variation in the cross-range direction. An iterative processing scheme is proposed to extract as many scattering centers as possible from the phase history of returned echoes. Experimental results with some measured airplane data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Micro-Doppler signature produced by micro-motion contains movement and structure information which is useful for radar classification and recognition. Aimed to classification and recognition of the target with the blades, the motion dynamics and echo models of the rotating linear rigid body in single frequency are set up. The micro-Doppler modulations of the rotating single point and whole linear rigid body are quantitatively analyzed. Furthermore, the methods by Smoothed Pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution and image processing are proposed for micro-Doppler modulation extraction and parameter estimation. Finally, simulation results are covered to demonstrate the correctness of theoretical analysis and the validity of the parameter estimation.

Abstract:As an emerging technique for detection, electromagnetic vector sensor multiple-input multiple-output (EVS-MIMO) radar has attracted extensive interest recently. This paper focuses on the coherent targets issue in EVS-MIMO radar, and a spatial smoothing estimator is developed to estimate the multiple parameters. It first recovers the rank of the array data via forward spatial smoothing. Then, it estimates the elevation angles via the rotational invariance technique. Combined with the vector cross-product method, the azimuth angles are obtained. Thereafter, with the previously achieved direction angles, the polarized parameters are acquired by using the least squares technique. Unlike the existing polarization smoothing techniques, the proposed estimator is able to estimate the two-dimensional direction parameter. Furthermore, it can provide a polarized parameter of the target. In addition, the proposed estimator is computationally efficient, since it offers closed-form and automatically paired solutions to all the parameters. Numerical experiments are carried out to show its superiority and effectiveness.

Abstract:The vortex electromagnetic (EM) wave radar has the potential to obtain more accurate micro-motion parameters for target recognition. However, with the existing algorithms of micro-motion parameter extraction it is difficult to obtain the real rotation radius and tilt angle of a rotational target in the presence of multiple scattering points in the radar beam. A micro-motion parameter extraction algorithm for rotating targets based on the vortex EM wave radar is proposed in this article. The angular Doppler is obtained from the dual-mode vortex EM echoes. The time interval between the maximum and minimum angular Doppler frequency is derived. The relationship between the time interval and micro-motion parameters is shown. By combining the linear Doppler and the angular Doppler, the micro-motion parameters are roughly estimated. Then, fine micro-motion parameters are obtained by using an iterative soft threshold algorithm. The proposed algorithm can extract the real rotation radius and tilt angle in the case of multiple scattering points. The performance and robustness of the algorithm are proved by simulations.

Abstract:In existing methods, the analytical solution of micro‐motion parameters for rotating targets in vortex electromagnetic wave radar has not been obtained, resulting in only approximate or multi‐dimensional estimation being used to extract micro‐motion parameters. To solve the above problems, the analytical solution of micro‐motion parameters is derived, and a micro‐motion parameter extraction method is proposed. The linear Doppler effect and angular Doppler effect in vortex electromagnetic wave radar echoes can be used to extract comprehensive micro‐motion parameters. However, the analytical solution of micro‐motion parameters for rotating targets in vortex EM wave radar has not been obtained. To solve the above problems, the analytical solution of micro‐motion parameters is derived, and a micro‐motion parameter extraction method is proposed. Firstly, the shape and properties of the angular Doppler curve in various cases are discussed. Subsequently, the properties of three points on the angular Doppler curve are derived. The micro‐motion parameters are obtained based on the three points. The simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can greatly reduce the computational complexity and improve the accuracy of micro‐motion parameter extraction.

Abstract:Rotating object model is commonly used for imaging analysis in high resolution radars such as the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR). For a rotating object, it is known that multi-aspect observations can improve cross-range resolution with the known imaging geometry. For the non-cooperative rotating object with unknown imaging geometry, this paper proposes an integrated scheme to estimate the key parameters, e.g., the rotating velocity and the aspect angle difference between every two observations. Furthermore, convolution back-projection (CBP) method is applied to provide fused imaging result with improved resolution. Also, the accuracy of the ultimate parameter estimation is analyzed, which is strongly related with several important factors like position extraction error of scattering centers and so on. Finally, the results of numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Target Characteristics on Rotation in Euclidean Space Using Full Polarimetric SAR Data

Abstract:In radar polarimetry, the target characteristics significantly depend on the rotation of the target concerning the radar line of sight. Hence, several attempts have been made in the literature to compensate for the rotational dependency or to derive a complete roll-invariant parameter using full polarimetric SAR data. However, the degree of dependency of the targets on the rotation domain has yet to be well explored. Hence, in this study, we have proposed a new parameter that characterizes the targets concerning rotation in Euclidean space. The parameter shows similar values for the targets, which can be related to each other through a unitary transformation. The advantage of this parameter has been demonstrated over different canonical targets. Further, the characteristics of the natural targets have been shown using the Single Look Complex data of C band Radarsat-2 and ALOS PALSAR over the San Francisco Bay area and Cuba, respectively.

Abstract:Strengths of terahertz synthetic aperture radar (THz-SAR) in high-resolution radar imaging and fine-grained target recognition have been widely proven. However, rotating targets existing in the scene will cause the defocus or ghost of the final result, which is not conducive to the subsequent image interpretation. To eliminate this adverse effect, it is necessary to accurately estimate rotation parameters. Taking special spectral characteristics of rotating targets into consideration, this paper extracts the signal of interest (SoI) from adopts the coarse focused result. Then, the inverse Radon transform of the time-frequency (TF) is applied to estimate the amplitude and the initial phase coarsely. Finally, both parameters can be searched and determined accurately according to the upper and lower envelop of TF distribution. Simulation results validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:With the continuous development of imaging radar technology, the bandwidth of transmission signals continues to increase. The geometrical theory diffraction (GTD) model can describe target scattering characteristics under wideband electromagnetic wave irradiation, which is significant for target detection and recognition. Existing target scattering center parameter estimation methods based on compressed sensing (CS) theory require sparse imaging scenes, which is difficult to meet in actual radar data. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a method for estimating high-value scattering centers parameters based on energy trajectory extraction. The estimation result of this method is accurate with fewer operations than CS-based method, and this method reduces the requirement for target sparsity. And use numerical simulation to prove the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:The sorties determination principle is discussed for narrowband coherent radar targets with non-rigid-structure based on a long coherent integration time in this paper.Firstly a novel signal model is proposed and some new concepts are put forward,such as common rotation Doppler,radial Doppler,chirp Doppler.And then it is pointed out that the initial frequency of target time-frequency distribution is decided by the sum of common rotation Doppler and radial Doppler,the trend is decided by chirp Doppler.Accordingly,targets can be discriminated from each other based on the difference of initial frequency and frequency trend.Finally,the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the simulated data and the real aircraft data.
Approach for space-based radar manoeuvring target detection and high-order motion parameter estimation

Abstract:The detection of manoeuvring target for space-based radar is a challenging task because of its weak energy and manoeuvring motion. Prolonging the integration time is an effective method to increase signal energy, which can improve the target detection performance. However, with the increase of integration time, the radial velocity, radial acceleration and radial acceleration rate of manoeuvring target will induce linear range walk, quadratic-range curvature, cubic-range curvature and Doppler frequency migration of echo signal, which may degrade the performance of target detection. To solve this problem, a novel method is proposed that implements a parameter separation transform to isolate the acceleration. Then, the velocity and the acceleration rate can be obtained via one-dimensional search after the compensation of linear and cubic-range migration based on Hough transform and third-order Keystone transform. The kernel steps are as follows: (i) the acceleration is isolated by multiplying the range-compressed data in range frequency domain by its time-reversed data according to the symmetrical property of azimuth slow time; (ii) the cubic-range curvature is corrected by a third-order Keystone transform. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in estimating radial velocity, radial acceleration and radial acceleration rate of a manoeuvring target, thereby the signal energy can be finely accumulated.

Abstract:The inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging for non-uniformly rotating target plays an important role in many applications. However, it always faces a serious challenge, i.e., the time-varying Doppler frequency induced by the target complex motions will degrade the quality of ISAR image seriously. Several algorithms based on motion parameter estimation have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them always suffer from the heavy computational burden and considerable propagation errors, which deteriorate the performances of algorithms and limit their practical applications. To tackle this problem, an efficient ISAR imaging algorithm is proposed for non-uniformly rotating targets based on geometry-aided parameters estimation in this paper. After the motion compensation, the ISAR echoes are modeled as the quadratic frequency modulated signal first, then is transformed into time-chirp distribution (TCD) plane and the least square Radon transform (RT) based on TCD (LSRT) to estimate the derivative of chirp rate efficiently is proposed. To improve the estimation performance and robustness, the pre-processing and the weighted least square RT TCD methods are both developed. Similarly, the weighted LSRT based on time-frequency distribution is also proposed to estimate the chirp rate. The proposed multiple geometry-aided method can eliminate the effect of propagation error and reduce the computational complexity simultaneously. The simulated data and real-measured data results are both presented to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:The slant range of a radar maneuvering target is usually modeled as a multivariate function in terms of its illumination time and multiple motion parameters. This multivariate range function includes the modulations on both the envelope and the phase of an echo of the coherent radar target and provides the foundation for radar target motion estimation. In this paper, the maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) are derived for motion estimation of a maneuvering target based on joint envelope and phase measurement, phase-only measurement and envelope-only measurement in case of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), respectively. It is shown that the proposed MLEs are to search the maximums of the outputs of the proposed generalized Radon-Fourier transform (GRFT), generalized Radon transform (GRT) and generalized Fourier transform (GFT), respectively. Furthermore, by approximating the slant range function by a high-order polynomial, the inherent accuracy limitations, i.e., the Cramer-Rao low bounds (CRLB), and some analysis are given for high order motion parameter estimations in different scenarios. Finally, some numerical experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Abstract:It is vital for the inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) imaging to get the precise information about the target rotation angles.The precise rotation angle estimation can realize the rotation compensation to boost the focusing performance of the ISAR,and also be indispensable to realize the azimuth scaling of the imaging.A method of estimating the rotation angles for the ISAR is presented.With the focusing degree of the target imaging as the cost function,the valid velocity and acceleration of the rotation angles are obtained through the alternating iteration to realize the precise rotation compensation and azimuth scaling of the imaging.The simulation and test data verify the effectiveness of the method.
