Abstract:Multifunctional micro- and nanoparticles have found their applications in fields like medicine, display materials, cosmetics, and so on. Advances in these fields have been demonstrated to need scalable uniformly sized, mass-produced, and structured spherical particles. In this work, we proposed structure-tailored and multifunctional composite polymeric microspheres with tunable diameter size, by using a versatile and scalable in-fiber particle fabrication through the Plateau-Rayleigh capillary instability method. The results show that the characteristic shapes of the luminescence spectra of CsPbBr3 remained similar before and after embedding in the microspheres. The luminescence intensity was stabilized at 85–90% of their original photoluminescence intensities over an extended period. Moreover, the photoluminescence lifetime of the fluorescent microspheres was increased by 9.03% compared to CsPbBr3. The X-ray diffraction results revealed that there was no change in the crystal structure of the dopants before and after the encapsulation. Also, precise magnetic manipulation of Janus microspheres was successfully demonstrated.
Synthesis of Submicrometer-Sized Cds Hollow Spheres in Aqueous Solutions of A Triblock Copolymer

Abstract:Submicrometer-sized hollow CdS spheres with a wall thickness of about 20 nm have been synthesized in aqueous solutions of cadmium acetate (Cd(OAc)(2)) and the triblock copolymer EO20PO70EO20 (P123) at room temperature through the slow release of S2- ions from thioacetamide (TAA). X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV-vis absorption, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy have been used for the characterization of the obtained hollow CdS spheres. It has been revealed that a minimum concentration of the polymer P123 was required for the formation of hollow CdS spheres and a double sonication condition was essential for the formation of pure hollow spheres. TEM and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies have suggested that Cd(OAc)(2) could induce P123 to form large complex micelles in the solution but Cd(NO3)(2) could not, resulting in the formation of hollow CdS spheres in the acetate system and loose CdS aggregates in the nitrate system. A templating mechanism has been proposed for the production of the hollow CdS spheres; that is, the complex micelles formed by P123 and cadmium acetate acted as soft templates for the precipitation of CdS particles around the surface of the spherical aggregates, leading to the formation of the final hollow spheres.

Abstract:Through encapsulating hydrophobic CdTe nanocrystals, CdTe@P(St-DVB) hybrid fluorescent nanosized modified microspheres were prepared by modified miniemulsion polymerization. High initiator concentration and high crosslinking degree were necessary to inhibit the phase separation of polymer chains with nanocrystals and reserve luminescence. Further more, to make the hybrid microspheres with good dispersibility in aqueous media, 3-(methacryloxy)propyl triethoxysilane (MPS) was added to copolymerize with St and DVB, and after hydrolization the microspheres with silanol groups on the surface were obtained, which can be well dispersed in water and used for cell imaging.

Abstract:Side-chain imidazolium-functionalized random copolymer P(MMEIM+ Cl--co-St) was synthesized by free-radical copolymerization of 1-methyl-3-(2-methacryloyloxy ethyl) imidazolium chloride(MMEIM+-Cl-) and styrene St) with azodiisobutyrounitrile(AIBN) as initiator. The structure of random copolymer was characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR and GPC analyses. By the electrostatic interaction between positively charged imidazolium-functionalized P(MMEIM+ Cl--co-St) and the negatively charged aqueous CdTe quantum dots (QDs), fluorescent nanocrystal-polymer composites CdTe/P(MMEIM+Cl--co-St) were prepared conveniently. UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence(PL) spectra indicated the photochemical stability and strong fluorescent emission of CdTe/P(MMEIM+Cl--co-St) composites. The transmission electron microscopy(TEM) photograph shows that the CdTe QDs in composites are monodisperse, uniform and no significant surface deterioration or aggregation of the QDs occurred during the composite synthesis.

Abstract:CdTe/PEDOT-PSS microspheres were fabricated by seed polymerization.The morphology,structure,optical absorption and emission properties were characterized by using SEM,FT-IR,XPS,UV-Vis and fluorescent spectra.The results suggest that:the CdTe/ PEDOT-PSS hybrids synthesized by seed polymerization exhibit uniform microsphere structure.The absorption spectrum for hybrids is the sum of the two components,and the peak at 550nm in emission spectrum is a result of charge transfer,which indicates the potential application of the microspheres optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Novel CdS micro-spheres consisting of many nanoparticles have been synthesized by a simple chemical bath deposition method. The size of CdS micro-spheres can be controlled by changing the synthesis temperature. XRD and PL spectra show that the as-prepared CdS micro-spheres have a high crystallinity and a good optical property. TEM, SAED, FEG-SEM and UV-Vis were used to investigate the micro-structure and the formation mechanism of the CdS micro-spheres.

Abstract:A simple but versatile technique of layer-by-layer self-assembly was used on polystyrene (PS) colloidal templates to produce CdTe quantum dots (QDs) modified PS spheres with Ag nanoparticle (NP) caps. The templates were obtained by self-assembly of monodispersed suspension of PS spheres (700nm) on glass slides. CdTe QDs and Ag NPs were deposited on PS spheres through electrostatic force with a media layer of poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride) (PDDA) polyelectrolyte. A novel and interesting site-selective deposition effect of NPs with different sizes on PS spheres was introduced. The small size NPs of CdTe QDs (3nm) were deposited on the outer surfaces of the PS templates. But the big size NPs of Ag NPs (45nm) were only deposited on the top surfaces of the PS templates. This site-selective deposition effect benefited from the uniform microporous structures of the monolayer PS templates, which served as sieves to filter the NPs. Only small NPs like CdTe QDs can go through the pathways of the micropores of the PS templates. Big NPs like Ag NPs cannot go through the uniform pores due to the steric hindrance effect. Finally, CdTe QDs modified PS spheres with Ag NPs caps were obtained. It was a new class of dual-function microspheres with applications both in fluorescence and in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The morphology and structure of the microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fluorescence and SERS properties were obtained by confocal fluorescence microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:The highly fluorescent CdTe quantum dots(QDs)have been synthesized by using thioglycolic acid(TGA) as a stabilizer and a new procedure of the introduction of Te source in aqueous solution.CdTe nanocrystals(NCs) have a tunable fluorescence emission wavelength range from 510 nm to 620 nm.Their narrowest full width at half maximum(FWHM) of about 34 nm,and the maximum quantum yield(QYs) of 60%.These CdTe nanocrystals were characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,transmission electron microscopy,energy dispersive X-ray and FT-IR spectroscopy.The effects of starting pH and the molar ratio of TGA/Cd2+ on the synthesis of CdTe QDs were investigated.The experimental results indicate that starting pH plays an important role in improving optical properties and controlling the growth rate of CdTe nanocrystals.The possible growth mechanism of CdTe nanocrystals at various pH was discussed.A new modified LSW model of particles growth was proposed.

Abstract:Hollow CdS nanospheres packed with square subunits were fabricated via microwave irradiation and pentaerythriol. The products were characterized with XRD, TEM, HRTEM, EDX and UV–vis spectrum. The results indicate that pentaerythriol is necessary in the formation of square subunits with high degree of crystallinity. A possible growth mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:CdSe nanoparticles of improved stability against aggregation were synthesized by using amphiphilic block copolymer polyacrylonitrile-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polyacrylonitrile (PAN-b-PEG-b-PAN, PEA). The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopic (HRTEM). The optical properties were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer and the room temperature photoluminescence (PL). The results revealed that the CdSe nanoparticles have been uniformly distributed throughout the copolymer with diameters of 6-7 nm and the produced novel hybrid nanocomposites displayed obviously quantum size effects and interesting fluorescence features. FTIR results provided the information on the interaction between the copolymer and the nanoparticles. The TGA revealed that the thermal property of the copolymer enhanced due to the interaction of the nanoparticles and the groups of the copolymer.
Novel One-Step Route for Synthesizing Cds/Polystyrene Nanocomposite Hollow Spheres

Abstract:CdS/polystyrene nanocomposite hollow spheres with diameters between 240 and 500 nm were synthesized under ambient conditions by a novel microemulsion method in which the polymerization of styrene and the formation of CdS nanoparticles were initiated by gamma-irradiation. The product was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which show the walls of the hollow spheres are porous and composed of polystyrene containing homogeneously dispersed CdS nanoparticles. The quantum-confined effect of the CdS/polystyrene nanocomposite hollow spheres is confirmed by the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescent (PL) spectra. We propose that the walls of these nanocomposite hollow spheres originate from the simultaneous synthesis of polystyrene and CdS nanoparticles at the interface of microemulsion droplets. This novel method is expected to produce various inorganic/polymer nanocomposite hollow spheres with potential applications in the fields of materials science and biotechnology.

Abstract:Polystyrene microbeads doped with highly luminescent CdS quantum dots (QDs) have been prepared. Polystyrene particles with diameters ranging from 100 nm to 500 µm were prepared by a suspension polymerization method and with different loadings of QDs. The resulting organic–inorganic microspheres have been characterized by FTIR, elemental analysis and SEM. Confocal microscopy and photoluminescence studies proved that the CdS nanoparticles were evenly distributed throughout the polystyrene spheres. The QD-containing composites have similar optical properties to isolated CdS QDs. The thermal decomposition of the hybrid materials occurred at higher temperature than for the parent organic materials.

Abstract:We have developed a new method for the synthesis of CdTe and PbTe nanocrystals by using TeO2 with trioctylphosphine oxide as Te precursor. Using this method, uniform-sized CdTe nanocrystals are successfully synthesized without the use of any air-sensitive alkylphosphine. The monodispersity, size, and shape of as-synthesized CdTe nanocrystals are well-controlled using "green" chemicals at elevated temperatures; the photoluminescence emission of CdTe nanocrystals covers a wide range from 510 to 750 nm. Oleic acid has been chosen as the only ligand to achieve controllable synthesis of CdTe nanocrystals with not only different sizes covering from green to red emissions but also different crystal structures (wurtzite and zinc blende) and shapes (including spherical, tetrapod, dendrimer, and flower) by simply adjusting the injection and/or growth temperatures. PbTe nanocrystals with spherical and cubic shapes have also been synthesized successfully with this new tellurium precursor and they can easily self-assemble into two-dimensional ordered structures. Special attention has also been paid to the studies of the new molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of metal telluride nanocrystals.
Direct Encoding of Silica Submicrospheres with Cadmium Telluride Nanocrystals

Abstract:The solvothermal synthesis of CdTe nanocrystals in dimethylformamide using cadmium lactate and sodium hydrogen telluride as precursors and 1-thioglycerol as a stabilizer is described. The resultant nanocrystals can be dispersed in the mixture solution of ammonium hydroxide, water, ethanol, and tetraethyl orthosilicate without aggregation and therefore readily encapsulated in silica submicrospheres without ligand exchange through the Stober process. CdTe nanocrystals of up to three different emission colors are encapsulated in silica spheres at varying emission intensity ratios, allowing for both wavelength and intensity encoding. A two-step growth process is also employed for the preparation of core-shell silica spheres, with differently sized CdTe nanocrystals encapsulated separately in the core and shell regions. Solid core-mesostructured shell silica spheres are further prepared. The mesostructured shell functions as a matrix for both nanocrystals and organic fluorophores. Our preparation approach is highly versatile and efficient. It offers potentials for the creation of optically encoded silica submicrospheres for many optical and biotechnological applications.
Aqueous Synthesis of CdTe/CdS/ZnS Quantum Dots and Their Optical and Chemical Properties

Abstract:In this paper, we described a strategy for synthesis of thiol-coated CdTe/CdS/ZnS (core-shell-shell) quantum dots (QDs) via aqueous synthesis approach. The synthesis conditions were systematically optimized, which included the size of CdTe core, the refluxing time and the number of monolayers and the ligands, and then the chemical and optical properties of the as-prepared products were investigated. We found that the mercaptopropionic acid (MPA)-coated CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs presented highly photoluminescent quantum yields (PL QYs), good photostability and chemical stability, good salt tolerance and pH tolerance and favorable biocompatibility. The characterization of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) showed that the CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs had good monodispersity and crystal structure. The fluorescence life time spectra demonstrated that CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs had a longer lifetime in contrast to fluorescent dyes and CdTe QDs. Furthermore, the MPA-stabilized CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs were applied for the imaging of cells. Compared with current synthesis methods, our synthesis approach was reproducible and simple, and the reaction conditions were mild. More importantly, our method was cost-effective, and was very suitable for large-scale synthesis of CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs for future applications.

Abstract:A new strategy for in situ preparation of highly fluorescent CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and hyperbranched poly(amidoamine)s (HPAMAM) as co-stabilizers was proposed in this paper. MPA and HPAMAM were added in turn to coordinate Cd2+. After adding NaHTe and further microwave irradiation, fluorescent CdTe QDs stabilized by MPA and HPAMAM were obtained. Such a strategy avoids the aftertreatment of thiol-stabilized QDs in their bioapplication and provides an opportunity for direct biomedical use of QDs due to the existence of biocompatible HPAMAM. The resulting CdTe QDs combine the mechanical, biocompatibility properties of HPAMAM and the optical, electrical properties of CdTe QDs together.
Amphibious Polymer-Functionalized Cdte Quantum Dots: Synthesis, Thermo-Responsive Self-Assembly, And Photoluminescent Properties

Abstract:A straightforward strategy is presented to functionalize aqueous-phase synthesized CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with thermo-sensitive poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) via direct surface-initiated oxyanionic vinyl polymerization. The polymer grafting quantity can be facilely controlled in a wide range up to 95.2wt% by adjusting the weight feed ratio of monomer to pristine QDs. The polymer-grafted QDs still retain good fluorescence properties in solution, solid polymer matrix, and on surfaces of silica (SiO2) sphere. The resulting QD@PDMAEMAs show excellent solubility both in water and organic solvents (e. g., chloroform, dichloromethane, dioxane, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol, and N, N-dimethylformamide). We have called them amphibious QDs. The thermo-sensitive PDMAEMAs make QDs accessible to self-assemble reversibly by adjusting temperature when the grafted polymer content is over a certain value. The self-assembly process and resulting structure were demonstrated by TEM, variable temperature dynamic light scattering (DLS) and UV-vis spectrometer. Because PDMAEMA is a kind of positive polyelectrolyte, QD@ PDMAEMAs were used as building blocks in the layer-by-layer self-assembly process on the surface of SiO2 spheres, affording fluorescent SiO2 spheres.

Abstract:A novel method for preparing PbS/hyperbranched polyester nanocomposite hollow spheres through coordination and organometallic chemistry method was presented. Their molecular structure crystallinity, shape of crystallites, and optical property were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and photoluminescence (PL), respectively. The hollow spheres were of the external diameter of about 50–70 nm and the wall thickness of about 10–20 nm. The possible formation mechanism was also proposed.

Abstract:A novel tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)-directed method has been successfully developed for the controlled synthesis of ZnSe particles with distinctive morphologies, including nanobelts, nanowires, and hierarchically solid/hollow spheres. These structures, self-assembled from nanobelts and nanorods, have been synthesized by adjusting the reaction parameters. such as the solvent composition, reaction temperature, and the aging time. Results reveal that the Volume ratio of H2O and TEPA plays a crucial role in the final morphology of ZnSe products. The mechanisms of phase formation and morphology control of ZnSe particles arc proposed and discussed in detail. The products have been characterizcd by means of X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution TEM. Raman spectra and luminescence spectroscopy. The as-prepared ZnSe nanoparticles display shape- and size-dependent photoluminescent optical properties. This is the first time to report preparation of complex hollow Structures of ZnSe crystals with hierarchy through a simple solution-based route. This synthetic route is designed to exploit a new H2O/TEPA/N2H4 center dot H2O system possibly for the preparation of other semiconductor nanomaterials.
