Abstract:Heydari [7] presented formulas for the Wiener and terminal Wiener indices of generalized Bethe trees. Unfortunately, these formulas are erroneous. We correct these errors. In addition, we characterize the trees with minimum terminal Wiener index among all the trees of order n and maximum degree Delta.

Abstract:The terminal Wiener index of a tree is the sum of distances for all pairs of pendent vertices, which recently arises in the study of phylogenetic tree reconstruction and the neighborhood of trees. This paper presents a sharp upper and lower bounds for the terminal Wiener index in terms of its order and diameter and characterizes all extremal trees which attain these bounds. In addition, we investigate the properties of extremal trees which attain the maximum terminal Wiener index among all trees of order n with fixed maximum degree.

Abstract:Distance-based topological indices, as a class of graph invariants, have received much attention. In particular, the Wiener index (sum of distances between all pairs of vertices) and terminal Wiener index (sum of distances between all pairs of leaves) are two of the most well known such indices in Chemical Graph Theory. Inspired by these concepts, the peripheral Wiener index is recently introduced as the sum of distances between all pairs of peripheral vertices (vertices with maximum eccentricity). In this note we consider a number of interesting problems related to this new distance-based index and propose some potential topics for further study.

Abstract:The Wiener index is the sum of topological distances between all pairs of vertices in a connected graph such as represents the structural formula of a molecule. Firstly, we investigate some properties of the partially ordered set of all vectors associated with a tree with respect to majorization. Then these results are used to characterize the trees which minimize the Wiener index among all trees with a given degree sequence. Consequently, all extremal trees with the smallest Wiener index are obtained in the sets of all trees of order n with the maximum degree, the leaf number and the matching number respectively.

Abstract:In theoretical chemistry, distance-based molecular structure descriptors are used for modeling physical, pharmacologic, biological and other properties of chemical compounds. We introduce a generalized Wiener polarity index $W_k (G)$ as the number of unordered pairs of vertices ${u, v}$ of $G$ such that the shortest distance $d (u, v)$ between $u$ and $v$ is $k$ (this is actually the $k$-th coefficient in the Wiener polynomial). For $k = 3$, we get standard Wiener polarity index. Furthermore, we generalize the terminal Wiener index $TW_k (G)$ as the sum of distances between all pairs of vertices of degree $k$. For $k = 1$, we get standard terminal Wiener index. In this paper we describe a linear time algorithm for computing these indices for trees and partial cubes, and characterize extremal trees maximizing the generalized Wiener polarity index and generalized terminal Wiener index among all trees of given order $n$.

Abstract:On trees of fixed order, we show a direct relation between Kemeny's constant and Wiener index, and provide a new formula of Kemeny's constant from the relation with a combinatorial interpretation. Moreover, the relation simplifies proofs of several known results for extremal trees in terms of Kemeny's constant for random walks on trees. Finally, we provide various families of co-Kemeny's mates, which are two non-isomorphic connected graphs with the same Kemeny's constant, and we also give a necessary condition for a tree to attain maximum Kemeny's constant for trees with fixed diameter.

Abstract:Introduced in 1947, the Wiener index W(T) = Sigma({u,v}subset of V(T)) d(u, v) is one of the most thoroughly studied chemical indices. The extremal structures ( in particular, trees with various constraints) that maximize or minimize the Wiener index have been extensively investigated. The Harary index H(T) = Sigma({u,v}subset of V(T)) 1/d(u, v), introduced in 1993, can be considered as the "reciprocal analogue" of the Wiener index. From recent studies, it is known that the extremal structures of the Harary index and the Wiener index coincide in many instances, i.e., the graphs that maximize the Wiener index minimize the Harary index and vice versa. In this note we provide some general statements regarding functions of distances of a tree, from which some of the extremal structures with respect to the Harary index (and a generalized version of it) are characterized. Among the results a recent conjecture of Ilic, Yu and Feng is proven. A case when the extremal structures of these two indices differ is also provided. Finally, we derive some previously known extremal results as immediate corollaries.

Abstract:The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of distances between all unordered pairs of vertices. Sam Spiro [The Wiener index of signed graphs, Appl. Math. Comput., 416(2022)126755] recently introduced the Wiener index for a signed graph and conjectured that the path P n with alternating signs has the minimum Wiener index among all signed trees with n vertices. Abstract:The Wiener index W(G) of a connected graph G, introduced by Wiener in 1947, is defined as W(G) = Σ u,v∈V (G) d G (u, v) where d G (u, v) is the distance (length a shortest path) between the vertices u and v in G. For S ⊆ V (G), the Steiner distance d(S) of the vertices of S, introduced by Chartrand et al. in 1989, is the minimum size of a connected subgraph of G whose vertex set contains S. The k-th Steiner Wiener index SWk(G) of G is defined as SW k (G) = Σ S⊆V (G),|S|=k d(S). We investigate the following problem: For any positive integer n, one can find a tree T with Steiner Wiener index SW k (T)(2 ≤ k ≤ n) or linear array Steiner Wiener index a SW k1 (T)+bSW k2 (T) (a, b is a integer) such that coverage n. In this paper, we give some solutions to this problem.

Abstract:The Wiener index is maximized over the set of trees with the given vertex weight and degree sequences. This model covers the traditional "unweighed" Wiener index, the terminal Wiener index, and the vertex distance index. It is shown that there exists an optimal caterpillar. If weights of internal vertices increase in their degrees, then an optimal caterpillar exists with weights of internal vertices on its backbone monotonously increasing from some central point to the ends of the backbone, and the same is true for pendent vertices. A tight upper bound of the Wiener index value is proposed and an efficient greedy heuristics is developed that approximates well the optimal index value. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is built and tested for the exact solution of this NP-complete problem.

Abstract:The eccentric sequence of a connected graph $G$ is the nondecreasing sequence of the eccentricities of its vertices. The Wiener index of $G$ is the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices of $G$. The unique trees that minimise the Wiener index among all trees with a given eccentric sequence were recently determined by the present authors. In this paper we show that these results hold not only for the Wiener index, but for a large class of distance-based topological indices which we term Wiener-type indices. Particular cases of this class include the hyper-Wiener index, the Harary index, the generalised Wiener index $W^{\lambda}$ for $\lambda>0$ and $\lambda <0$, and the reciprocal complementary Wiener index. Our results imply and unify known bounds on these Wiener-type indices for trees of given order and diameter. We also present similar results for the $k$-Steiner Wiener index of trees with a given eccentric sequence. The Steiner distance of a set $A\subseteq V(G)$ is theminimum number of edges in a subtree of $G$ whose vertex set contains $A$, and the $k$-Steiner Wiener index is the sum of distances of all $k$-element subsets of $V(G)$. As a corollary, we obtain a sharp lower bound on the $k$-Steiner Wiener index of trees with given order and diameter, and determine in which cases the extremal tree is unique, thereby correcting an error in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the Hamiltonicity of graphs in terms of Wiener index, hyper-Wiener index and Harary index of their quasi-complement or complement. Firstly, we give some sufficient conditions for an balanced bipartite graph with given the minimum degree to be traceable and Hamiltonian, respectively. Secondly, we present some sufficient conditions for a nearly balanced bipartite graph with given the minimum degree to be traceable. Thirdly, we establish some conditions for a graph with given the minimum degree to be traceable and Hamiltonian, respectively. Finally, we provide some conditions for a $k$-connected graph to be Hamilton-connected and traceable for every vertex, respectively.

Abstract:Recently, D. Vukičević and J. Sedlar in [1] introduced an order "<math>⪯</math>" on <math>Tn,</math> the set of trees on <math>n</math> vertices, such that the topological index <math>F</math> of a graph is a function defined on the order set <math>〈Tn,⪯〉</math>. It provides a new approach to determine the extremal graphs with respect to topological index <math>F</math>. By using the method they determined the common maximum and/or minimum graphs of <math>Tn</math> with respect to topological indices of Wiener type and anti-Wiener type. Motivated by their researches we further study the order set <math>〈Tn,⪯〉</math> and give a criterion to determine its order, which enable us to get the common extremal graphs in four prescribed subclasses of <math>〈Tn,⪯〉</math>. All these extremal graphs are confirmed to be the common maximum and/or minimum graphs with respect to the topological indices of Wiener type and anti-Wiener type. Additionally, we calculate the exact values of Wiener index for the extremal graphs in the order sets <math>〈C(n,k),⪯〉,</math> <math>〈Tn(q),⪯〉</math> and <math>〈TnΔ,⪯〉</math>.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Wiener index of the orientation of trees and theta‐graphs. An orientation of a tree is called no‐zig‐zag if there is no subpath in which edges change the orientation twice. Knor, Škrekovski, and Tepeh conjectured that every orientation of a tree T achieving the maximum Wiener index is no‐zig‐zag. We disprove this conjecture by constructing a counterexample. Knor, Škrekovski, and Tepeh conjectured that among all orientations of the theta‐graph Θ a , b , c with a ≥ b ≥ c and b > 1 , the maximum Wiener index is achieved by the one in which the union of the paths between u 1 and u 2 forms a directed cycle of length a + b + 2 , where u 1 and u 2 are the vertex of degree 3. We confirm the validity of the conjecture.

Abstract:The well-known Wiener index is defined as the sum of pairwise distances between vertices. Extremal problems with respect to it have been extensively studied for trees. A generalization of the Wiener index, called the Steiner Wiener index, takes the sum of minimum sizes of subgraphs that span k given vertices over all possible choices of the k vertices. We consider the extremal problems with respect to the Steiner Wiener index among trees of a given degree sequence. First, it is pointed out minimizing the Steiner Wiener index in general may be a difficult problem, although the extremal structure may very likely be the same as that for the regular Wiener index. We then consider the upper bound of the general Steiner Wiener index among trees of a given degree sequence and study the corresponding extremal trees. With these findings, some further discussion and computational analysis are presented for chemical trees. We also propose a conjecture based on the computational results. In addition, we identify the extremal trees that maximize the Steiner Wiener index among trees with a given maximum degree or number of leaves.
