Abstract:With the aesthetics’ enhancement, there is a growing demand for the use of restorative ceramics in dental surgery. However, ceramic materials are hard and brittle, and problems such as surface damage, crack, and fatigue were easily produced in dental abrasive finishing. Consequently, these flaws could cause the strength decrease of the ceramic, which manifest the shortage of the lifespan in dental. Contraposing these problems, a high-speed handpiece with diamond burs was used when finishing the leucite glass ceramic in the dental surgery. In this paper, finishing force, specific energy and surface integrity including the roughness and morphology were observed. the results revealed that both normal and tangential forces increased with the increasing of feed rate and depth of cut, while there is an apparent decrease of the specific energy. These two parameters were bigger in the up finishing than that of down finishing. Finishing parameters have little effect on surface roughness, according to the observation of a scanning electron microscope. It is easily found that the finished surface was consisting of brittle fracture and plastic deformation. For comprehensive, good surface quality could be obtained in the down cutting other than up cutting.

Abstract:As patient demand for faster, streamlined, and convenient treatments increases, clinicians need to be prepared to provide accurate, esthetic, and predictable restorative solutions that meet these requirements. Among the many options currently available in coronal treatments utilizing a digital workflow, the author's practice has found that the use of a certain lithium-disilicate block in tandem with a self-adhesive resin cement provides such a solution. This case report demonstrates the use of CAD/CAM dentistry with in-office milling to restore a failed No. 14 full-coverage crown.

Abstract:With the emergence and development of new dental materials, chairside computer aided design/computer aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) materials, as an important part of digital technology, is gaining increasing progress to meet the needs of implant restorations and digital processing technology for the mechanical properties, chemical stability, biocompatibility and processing properties. A large number of in-vitro experiments and clinical studies have been reported on various materials, such as polycrystalline ceramic, glass ceramic and indirect composite. The purpose of this article is to review the performance, the clinical indications and applications of the CAD/CAM materials for chairside digital workflow in implant prosthodontics.

Abstract:The concept of computer-aided design/computer aided manufacturing(CAD/CAM) was first mentioned decades years ago in the field of dentistry.Using this technology to make dental restorations has been wide recently and developed rapidly in prosthodontics and oral implantology.Until now there are several commercial CAD/CAM systems on market.With the use of CAD/CAM technology in dentistry,it has broken the traditional pattern of making dentures manually.Meanwhile,it brings opportunity for materials science.The machinable/milled materials in dentistry should not only have excellent biocompatibility,but also machining and physical properties.Among the materials,ceramics has excellent characteristics on its biocompatibility,aesthetics,physical properties closed to natural teeth.Nowadays,in clinic,machinable ceramics are used from fledspar which has low flexural strength to high flexural strength zirconia,which have gradually realized making restoration automatically from inlay,anterior single crown to posterior fixed bridge.In this article it provides the overview of the machinable ceramic materials now used in domestic clinic for CAD/CAM in dentistry.

Abstract:This paper introduced the fabrication process of the fused porcelain to molar crown with CAD/CAM technology. Firstly, preparation teeth data was retrieved by the 3D-optical measuring system. Then, we have reconstructed the inner surface designed the outer surface shape with the computer aided design software. Finally, the mini high-speed NC milling machine was used to produce the fused porcelain to CAD/CAM molar crown. The result has proved that the fabrication process is reliable and efficient. The dental restoration quality is steady and precise.

Abstract:In order to satisfy the current demand for fast and high-quality prosthodontics, we have carried out a research in the fabrication process of the porcelain fused to metal crown on molar with CAD/CAM technology. Firstly, we get the data of the surface mesh on preparation teeth through a 3D-optical grating measuring system. Then, we reconstruct the 3D-model crown with the computer-aided design software which was developed by ourselves. Finally, with the 3D-model data, we produce a metallic crown on a high-speed CNC carving machine. The result has proved that the metallic crown can match the preparation teeth ideally. The fabrication process is reliable and efficient, and the restoration is precise and steady in quality.

The technology to make dental restorations has found wide application recently and developed rapidly in prosthodontics and oral implantology, for it could save patients' time and manpower, have precision on prostheses' edging, etc. Until now there are several commercial CAD/CAM systems on market. With the use of CAD/CAM technology in dentistry, it has broken the traditional pattern of making dentures manually. Meanwhile, it brings opportunity for material science. The machinable/milled materials in dentistry should have not only excellent biocompatibility, but also machining and physical properties. Both of them are important. Nowadays, a great number of blocks are made from feldspar ceramics, glass-ceramics, alumina oxide, zirconium oxide, titanium, composite materials, wax and so on. Lots of researchers have had their focus on metal-free materials, because it can make the restorations look more natural and not show the inside metal color. However, strength like feldspar ceramics has its own disadvantages. It has strict indications, otherwise the restoration may fail. The technique called In-Ceram has been used long time ago. It also has long clinical experience and excellent long-term prognosis. People have explored this technique in CAD/CAM restorations. Studies have manifested that it can be utilized this way. At first, alumina was milled with pores; then, glass was infiltrated to the milled material. After zirconia had its success used in orthopedics, it became more and more popular to investigate whether this stuff was suitable in dentistry or not. Luckily, it has been proved adaptable for making single crown in posterior area, fixed partial dentures, in particular, and milling it using CAM equipment, due to the partially sintered block's hardness like chalk. Several milled polymer materials are made for temporary crowns or bridges. In recent years, because of the phenomenon about microleakage of the direct filling composite resin intraoral, indirect filling method, inlay, by the adhesive agent has bonded the tooth tissue and the material to eliminate the microleakage. It is the chemical bonding. As a result of this, maybe composite material made inlay will be prospective. As the aging phenomenon of the polymers are inevitable, and the resin matrix are polymers, it is not suitable for cosmetic restorations. Metal materials for CAD/CAM have some commercial products. But few scholars do the studies about it. In this article you will find that many investigators abroad do the research about the commercial blocks on their physical and clinical study. On the other hand, domestic scholars pay attention to the basis of the material research. It provides the overview of the materials for CAD/CAM in dentistry.

Abstract:Bioceramics have been adopted in dental restorations for implants, bridges, inlays, onlays, and all-ceramic crowns. Dental bioceramics include glass ceramics, reinforced porcelains, zirconias, aluminas, fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, and multilayered ceramic structures. The process of additive manufacturing is ideally suited to dentistry. Models are designed using data from a computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging. Since its development in 2001, direct ceramic machining of presintered yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal has become increasingly popular in dentistry. There are wide variety commercially available cements for luting all-ceramic restorations. However, resin cements have lower solubility and better aesthetic characteristics.

Abstract:Advances in computer-aided design (CAD) / computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies and their ease of application enabled the development of novel treatment concepts for modern prosthodontics. This recent paradigm shift in fixed prosthodontics from traditional to minimally invasive treatment approaches is evidenced by the clinical long-term success of bonded CAD/CAM glass-ceramic restorations. Today, defect-oriented restorations, such as inlays, onlays, and posterior crowns, are predominately fabricated from glass-ceramics in monolithic application. The variety of CAD/CAM ceramic restorative systems is constantly evolving to meet the increased demands for highly aesthetic, biocompatible, and long-lasting restorations. Recently introduced polymer-infiltrated ceramic network CAD/CAM blocks add innovative treatment options in CAD/CAM chairside 1-visit restorations. The material-specific high-edge stability enables the CAD/CAM machinability of thin restoration margins. Full-contour zirconia restorations are constantly gaining market share at the expense of bilayered systems. Advancements in material science and bonding protocols foster the development of novel material combinations or fabrication techniques of proven high-strength zirconia ceramics. CAD/CAM applications offer a standardized manufacturing process resulting in a reliable, predictable, and economic workflow for individual and complex teeth-supported restorations. More evidence from long-term clinical studies is needed to verify the clinical performance of monolithic polymer-infiltrated ceramic network and zirconia teeth-supported minimally invasive and extensive restorations.

Abstract:Computer assisted design/computer assisted machining (CAD/CAM) technology has received considerable clinical and research interest from modern dental practices as a means of delivering all-ceramic restorations. Up to now the CAD/CAM system with zirconia has the highest fracture strength in all all-ceramic materials, and consistently enabled the most esthetic, lifelike reproduction of natural dentition. They have been widely received by both dentists and patients. The CAD/CAM system with zirconia is indicated for crowns and bridges in natural teeth or implants and telescope dentures, the CAD/CAM with zirconia can be placed anywhere in the mouth, and can replace the porcelain crowns and bridges for single crown and bridges less than 6 units. This paper described the techniques of CAD/CAM system with zirconia in fabrication of crowns, bridges, telescope dentures and implant dentures with colored illustrations.

Abstract:Objectives To give a comprehensive review of advancement in dental ceramics, fabrication methods, and the challenges associated with clinical application. Data, sources and study selection Researches on chemical composition, biomechanical behaviors, optical properties, bonding strategies and fabrication methods were included. The search of articles was independently conducted by two authors in the PubMed, Scopus, Medline and Web of Science. Conclusions Dental ceramics have shown significant advancements in terms of esthetics and function. However, improving fracture toughness without compromising optical properties remains a challenge. Repairing fractured zirconia or glass-matrix ceramic prostheses with the same material is difficult due to the sintering process. Developing innovative bonding techniques that provide strong and long-lasting bonding strength between ceramics and tooth structures poses a recurring obstacle. Clinical significance Despite the emergence of dental ceramics and fabrication techniques, certain limitations such as susceptibility to brittleness and fracture still exist. Therefore, the current review provided valuable information around the advanced dental ceramics in tooth repair. The laboratory test data and the clinical outcome are also presented in details, aiming to guide clinicians in making informed decisions regarding ceramic restorations.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To establish the computer aided design (CAD) software platform of individualized abutment for the maxilla central incisor.METHODS:Three-dimentional data of the incisor was collected by scanning and geometric transformation. Data mainly included the occlusal part of the healing abutment, the location carinae of the bedpiece, the occlusal 1/3 part of the artificial gingiva's inner surface, and so on. The all-ceramic crown designed in advanced was "virtual cutback" to get the original data of the abutment's supragingival part. The abutment's in-gum part was designed to simulate the individual natural tooth root. The functions such as "data offset", "bi-rail sweep surface" and "loft surface" were used in the process of CAD.RESULTS:The CAD route of the individualized all-ceramic abutment was set up. The functions and application methods were decided and the complete CAD process was realized.CONCLUSIONS:The software platform was basically set up according to the requests of the dental clinic.

Abstract:Zirconia ceramic is an ideal dental restoration material owing to its good biocompatibility, superior physical behaviors, and excellent aesthetic properties. However, peri-implant inflammation and excessive occlusal surface wear are critical issues that hinder the clinical application of zirconia ceramic dentures. The surface texturing technique is an unique means to improve the surface properties of products, such as biocompatibility. This paper provides a detailed overview of the definition and development of surface texturing techniques. A comprehensive review is conducted on the machining mechanisms and features of common texture preparation techniques, such as laser texturing and ultrasonic vibration texturing. The mechanisms of surface textures on the tribological behaviors, wettability, and antibacterial behaviors of specimens such as restorations are deeply discussed. The limitations of current studies on surface texturing techniques of dental zirconia ceramics and the future prospects are outlined. The review can help scientists improve the currently available cost-effective texture preparation process and develop high-performance denture restorations.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the technical guideline of inlays computer aided design(CAD) for further development,to test the feasibility of processing for the design results of the technical guideline,and to assist co-operation with automatic inlay CAD software development.Methods: On the basis of point cloud data of right mandibular first molar of standard crown,we established the coordinate system,the landmarks and lines and the characteristic curves.A dental cast of right mandibular first molar MOD-inlay of an individual normal occlusion was scanned.The following objects were digitized: prepared tooth、neighbor teeth and intercuspal bite record.On the basis of parametric standard crown established in the research,using Surfacer 11.0,we achieved the reconstruction of MOD-inlay by extracting margin line,constructing tissue surface,constructing outer surface and occlusal grinding,then the design result was processed and try-in on the cast.We also developed automatic inlay CAD software based on the guideline of inlay CAD.Results: The guideline of inlay CAD was established,the design results were processed and an automatic inlay CAD software was developed on basis of Surfacer 11.0.Conclusion: It is a feasible method to establish technical guideline of inlay based on reverse engineering technology and process its design result,and a automatic inlay CAD software could be developed based on the technical guideline.

Abstract:Ceramics are highly regarded in dental restorations owing to their favorable mechanical properties, chemical resistance, biocompatibility, and aesthetic features. Ceramic additive manufacturing (AM) technology has emerged as a promising solution that offers advantages over traditional techniques such as injection molding, die pressing, tape casting, and milling. Ceramic AM is, however, still under development, with new technologies and devices continuously emerging. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the latest research and applications of ceramic AM in dental restoration, focusing on the progress made within the past five years. Three perspectives are discussed: ceramic AM technologies, commonly used printable ceramic materials, and different types of dental restorations. Among these, vat photopolymerization is the most widely researched and promising AM technology for large-scale applications. ZrO 2 remains the primary material used in AM research, whereas crowns and bridges are the most frequently studied and are the closest to industrialized dental restorations. Currently, ceramic AM satisfies the clinical requirements of accuracy, mechanical performance, and biocompatibility. However, compared with traditional methods, it lacks significant advantages in terms of cost and manufacturing efficiency, limiting its large-scale application. Further improvements are necessary in all stages, including raw materials, equipment, post-processing, and standardization.

Abstract:This case report presents an overview of the workflow and advantages of computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology in designing single crowns for anterior restoration. The workflow of CAD/CAM systems involves extraoral scanning, virtual crown design, and automated milling processes. The advantages of CAD/CAM technology include enhanced accuracy, reduced chairside time, and improved patient satisfaction. Considerations for material selection, clinical indications, and associated factors in CAD/CAM single-crown design are also discussed. Additionally, CAD/CAM provided accurate and lifelike restoration contours, ensuring optimal fit, function, and aesthetics. This technology proved highly beneficial in this case for several reasons. This case illustrates the significant advantages of CAD/CAM technology in modern dental practice, offering precise, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing solutions for single dental crowns.

Abstract:The aim of this review article is to present various material groups, including ceramics, composites and hybrid materials, currently utilized in the field of CAD/CAM. The described technology is amongst the most important in modern prosthetics. Materials that are applicable in this technique are constantly tested, evaluated and improved. Nowadays, research on dental materials is carried out in order to meet the increasing demand on highly aesthetic and functional indirect restorations. Recent studies present the long-term clinical success of restorations made with the help of both ceramic and composite materials in the CAD/CAM method. However, new materials are developed and introduced that do not have long-term in vivo observations. We can outline a monolithic polymer-infiltrated ceramic network and zirconia teeth support that show promising results to date but require further assessment. The materials will be compared with regard to their mechanical and clinical properties, purpose, advantages and limitations.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To introduce the double scanning for producing computer aided design and computer aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) zirconia crowns, and to compare Procera with Everest CAD-CAM system by observing clinical effects of the crowns.METHODS:Forty CAD-CAM zirconia crowns (10 crowns by Procera, and 30 crowns by Everest) were evaluated, and the examination criteria included: marginal fit, aesthetics, gingival health, retention, and fracture. All of the zirconia copings were produced using double scanning. Procera system and Everest system use contact scanner and optical scanner respectively.RESULTS:The observation time for the crowns ranged from 6 to 24 months. The results of clinic evaluation were acceptable in all restorations.CONCLUSIONS:Double scanning could be used to produce complicated zirconia copings by CAD-CAM in order to get proper symmetrical porcelain length. It was easier to make complicated coping with contact scanner than with optical scanner.
