Abstract:Terahertz digital holography is a non-scanning and real time method for reconstructing the absorption and phase distributions of the wave-front diffracted by a given sample simultaneously in the terahertz region. A continuous-wave terahertz in-line digital holographic multi-plane imaging method is presented here for achieving a three-dimensional shape of a specific portion of a sample with the best possible focus. The three enhancement techniques of synthetic aperture, autofocusing and phase retrieval are applied to the single plane recordings for achieving a high resolution, good quality and optimally focused reconstructed image. Later, multi-plane reconstructed images are processed with the threshold mask and a three dimensional profile of the sample is obtained. Experimental verification confirms that the proposed method is a valid tool for acquiring multi-plane information of a target in the terahertz range.

Abstract:Continuous-wave terahertz digital holography is a practical tool to obtain the complete wave-front information of a sample in the terahertz region that has offered unique advantages in various fields. The propagation distance plays a decisive role in the numerical reconstruction of both in-line and off-axis digital holograms. Only when a terahertz hologram is propagated back to a focal object plane can the authentic amplitude and phase distribution be reconstructed, which is actually a troublesome task. In this manuscript, the combination of hologram enhancement, spectrum filtering, phase retrieval and phase unwrapping algorithms is illustrated and organized to benefit the decision-making process of the autofocusing method not only for the amplitude distribution but also for the phase image. To guarantee the accuracy of the autofocusing results, the noise of the hologram, the intrinsic twin image in the amplitude and phase results and the wrapped ambiguity in the phase distribution are suppressed or lessened by using the four techniques stated above. The focused amplitude and unwrapped phase distributions of the sample are reconstructed, and experimental verification confirms that the present hybrid autofocusing method is a feasible, effective and promising technology with broad application prospects.

Abstract:We introduced two continuous-wave terahertz iterative phase-contrast imaging methods. In-line digital holography has the capability to reconstruct the amplitude and phase distributions simultaneously. It is a non-destructive, high-resolution, full-field dynamic phase-contrast imaging technique. Ptychography can reconstruct the complex amplitude distribution of the transmission object from the overlapped diffraction patterns. Both methods can achieve phase-contrast imaging, and are suitable for terahertz region. In this paper, both Gabor in-line holographic and ptychographical configurations are investigated from algorithms to experiments. For in-line holography, the use of extrapolation, synthetic aperture, sub-pixel shifting and multi-plane imaging are introduced to improve the resolution and reconstruction accuracy. For ptychography, we obtained the ptychographical reconstruction results of a polypropylene alphabet sample, which provides a new imaging method for terahertz phase-contrast imaging.

Abstract:The terahertz (THz) imaging is an advanced technique on the basis of the unique characteristics of terahertz radiation. Due to its noncontact, non-invasive and high-resolution capabilities, it has already shown great application prospects in biomedical observation, sample measurement, and quality control. The continuous-wave terahertz in-line digital holography is a combination of terahertz technology and in-line digital holography of which the source is a continuous-wave terahertz laser. Over the past decade, many researchers used different terahertz sources and detectors to undertake experiments. In this paper, the pre-process of the hologram is accomplished after the holograms’ recording process because of the negative pixels in the pyroelectric detector and the air vibration caused by the chopper inside the camera. To improve the quality of images, the phase retrieval algorithm is applied to eliminate the twin images. In the experiment, the pin which terahertz wave can’t penetrate and the TPX slice carved letters “THz” are chosen for the samples. The amplitude and phase images of samples are obtained and the twin image and noise in the reconstructed images are suppressed. The results validate the feasibility of the terahertz in-line digital holographic imaging technique. This work also shows the terahertz in-line digital holography technique’s prospects in materials science and biological samples’ detection.
Application of Autofocusing Methods in Continuous-Wave Terahertz In-Line Digital Holography

Abstract:Terahertz digital holography is a combination of terahertz imaging and digital holography. During reconstruction, the key point is to find accurately the propagation distance from which the distribution of focused samples can be reconstructed. In this paper, we use a continuous-wave terahertz in-line digital holographic imaging system to record holograms. Moreover, the autofocusing algorithms through which the reconstructed distance can be calculated are applied to the reconstruction. The in-line schematic is beneficial to the terahertz wave imaging, which, however, inevitably produces the object's twin image. In the refocusing process, both the reconstructed image with low signal-to-noise ratio and contrast and the twin image induce the formation of false peaks corresponding to improper distances on the autofocusing curves. To restrain the disturbance factors and improve the accuracy of the judgment, a phase retrieval method is implemented in the reconstruction. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the autofocusing method with phase retrieval in terahertz in-line digital holographic imaging system. The proposed method provides an automated and efficient evaluation which helps to obtain the optimized propagation distance.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radiation, due to its unique propagation characters of low-energy, high-penetration, wa-ter-absorption, provides internal structure of objects and comprehensive biological information in phase contrast imaging. It has been applied in biomedical imaging, non-destructive testing, and other fields. As an important part of THz imaging technology, continuous-wave (CW) THz digital holography (TDH) is qualified as a non-invasive and whole-field phase contrast imaging method. In this paper, we review the development and status of off-axis and in-line TDH, including the recording and reconstruction theory, experimental setup, and reconstruction algorithms. The influence of existing THz sources and the reconstruction algorithms on resolution and fidelity of imaging are analyzed. And the development trend of TDH is prospected in the end.

Abstract:In terahertz inline digital holography, zero-order diffraction light and conjugate images can cause the reconstructed image to be blurred. In this paper, three phase retrieval algorithms are applied to conduct reconstruction based on the same near-field diffraction propagation conditions and image-plane constraints. The impact of different object-plane constraints on CW terahertz inline digital holographic reconstruction is studied. The results show that in the phase retrieval algorithm it is not suitable to impose restriction on the phase when the object is not isolated in the transmission-type CW terahertz inline digital holography. In addition, the effects of zero-padding expansion, boundary replication expansion, and apodization operation on reconstructed images are studied. The results indicate that the conjugate image can be eliminated, and a better reconstructed image can be obtained by adopting an appropriate phase retrieval algorithm after the normalized hologram extending to the minimum area, which meets the applicable range of the angular spectrum reconstruction algorithm by means of boundary replication.
Terahertz In-Line Digital Holographic Multiplane Imaging Method

Abstract:Terahertz waves of which frequency spans from 0.1 to 10 THz bridge the gap between the infrared spectrum and microwaves. Owing to the special features of terahertz wave, such as penetrability and non-ionizing, terahertz imaging technique is a very significant and important method for inspections and detections. Digital holography can reconstruct the amplitude and phase distributions of a sample without scanning and it already has many successful applications in the area of visible and infrared light. The terahertz in-line digital holographic multi-plane imaging system which is presented in this paper is the combination of a continuous-wave terahertz source and the in-line scheme of digital holography. In order to observe a three dimensional (3D) shape sample only a portion of which appears in good focus, the autofocusing algorithm is brought to the data process. The synthetic aperture method is also applied to provide the high resolution imaging effect in the terahertz waveband. Both intrinsic twin images and defocused objective images confuse the quality of the image in an individual reconstructed plane. In order to solve this issue, phase retrieval iteration algorithm is used for the reconstruction. In addition, the reconstructed amplitude image in each plane multiplies the mask of which the threshold depends on the values of the autofocusing curve. A sample with simple artificial structure is observed which verifies that the present method is an authentic tool to acquire the multi-plane information of a target in terahertz waves. It can expect a wide application in terahertz defect detecting, terahertz medical inspection and other important areas in the future.

Research on the Superimposed Frame Number of Terahertz Digital Holograms in Double-Exposed Phase Retrieval Algorithm

Abstract:Phase retrieval algorithm is gradually applied to the terahertz in-line digital holography, as its effectiveness in the removal of the zero-order diffraction light and twin image. Based on the experiments, the reconstruction results of the double-exposed phase retrieval algorithm are obtained which demonstrate that the method can improve the quality of reconstructed images, compared to the angular spectrum method. Furthermore, the influence of the superimposed frame number of the holograms in double-exposed phase retrieval algorithm is discussed. The result shows that the recording time can be reduced by reasonably decreasing the frames of the holograms and it contributes to real-time imaging and the algorithm practicality is also further improved.

Abstract:Terahertz Inline digital holography, having the advantages of digital holography and terahertz band, promises itself a broad future in fields such as biomedical and material examination. Holograms of the two isolated targets are reconstructed under phase retrieval condition - either amplitude restricted only or amplitude & phase restricted. Results are compared and analyzed. Moreover, imaging experiments with shelters are also conducted. Reconstruction results show that, under amplitude & phase restricted, targets covered by a piece of B5 paper can be well distinguished.

Abstract:Phase retrieval algorithms applied to in-line digital holography reconstruction can weaken interference from the region outside the study target and an unstable light source, etc., by adopting the object-plane support domain constraint. Based on threshold segmentation and morphological filtering, a method to directly calculate the object-plane support domain is proposed in this paper. Combined with the above method, an improved support-domain constrained phase retrieval algorithm is presented. Then, imaging simulations and experiments on terahertz in-line digital holography reconstruction of nonisolated objects are conducted. The simulations study the influence of transmittance of the background plate, structural element of morphological filtering, etc., on the reconstruction effect of the improved algorithm without noise interference. Simulation and experiment results suggest that good reconstructed images can be obtained by this algorithm when transmittance of the background plate is greater than 0.90.

Abstract:We present a terahertz phase contrast imaging technique based on the iterative phase retrieval method which can be realized readily on the conventional terahertz intensity measurement system. The complex wave field of terahertz radiation in the object plane (i.e., the terahertz phase image) is reconstructed from its measured Fourier transform magnitude using the Gerchberg-Saxton-Fienup algorithm with a known object support constraint. Preliminary experimental tests for a nearly transparent sample are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of this new imaging concept.

Abstract:A phase retrieval method for dual-wavelength in-line digital holography is presented with double axially displaced holograms. A synthetic wavelength is used during iterative propagations to retrieve wrap-free phase distributions with a much extended measurement range. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate a better elimination of the twin image, a faster rate of convergence of the iterative routine and less number of wavelengths are compared with previously reported multiple-wavelength in-line holography.

Abstract:Terahertz digital holography is a new phase contrast imaging combining the advantages of terahertz imaging and digital holography. It only requires low coherence light source and a simple optical structure, and can access to quantitative real time complex amplitude of light wave. There are many factors influencing the resolution of digital holography. One of the main factors is the size of the target surface of the detector. Therefore, synthetic aperture method is proposed to enlarge the target size of the detector and improve the imaging resolution of terahertz digital holography. A continuous-wave terahertz digital holography device is built to obtain high quality and high resolution amplitude and phase contrast images. The experimental results show that the synthetic aperture method can improve the resolution of terahertz digital holographic imaging.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) continuous-wave digital holography is an advanced interference imaging technique that can reconstruct quantitative distributions of amplitude and phase of the sample in real time with high resolution. In this paper, a reflective off-axis holographic system is presented. A Gaussian Fitting method is applied to enhance the hologram contrast and Laplacian of Gaussian filter is used to obtain the reconstructed distance automatically. Furthermore, spectrum filtering method and angular spectrum algorithm are used to obtain the complex amplitude of the One-Yuan Chinese metal coin. The results confirm the prospective application of terahertz digital holography in the surface morphology for reflective samples.

Abstract:A phase retrieval method by using single-shot dual-wavelength digital holography is proposed. Each single wavelength hologram is extracted from the color CCD recorded hologram at one exposure, and the unwrapped phase image of object can be reconstructed directly. Different from the traditional multiple wavelength phase unwrapping techniques, any single complex wave-fronts at different wavelengths have no need to be calculated any more. Thus, the phase retrieval is computationally fast and straightforward, and the limitations on the total optical path difference are significantly relaxed. The practicability of the proposed method is demonstrated by both simulated and experimental results.
