Abstract:Between August 24–27, nearly 300 systems biology researchers from more than 15 countries and regions gathered in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China for the 8th International Conference on Systems Biology (ISB2014). It was organised by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Qingdao University, and co-held with the 4th International Translational Bioinformatics Conference (TBC2014). The conference was sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences of CAS (AMSS), Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences of CAS (SIBS), Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology of CAS (QIBEBT), Qingdao University, Computational Systems Biology Society of ORSC, Functional Genome Informatics and Systems Biology Society of CSCB, Systems Biology Technical Committee of IEEE SMC Society, Korean Society for Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (KSBSB), The Korean Society of Medical Informatics (KOSMI) and Korean Genome Organisation (KOGO). The emergence of high-throughput biological experiment techniques and the generated data provide the unprecedented opportunity to characterise biological systems in a more detailed and comprehensive manner. Multiscale modeling methods and computational approaches are eager requests to meet the challenges of deciphering the biological systems from genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic levels. The purpose of the ISB conference series is to build an international platform to exchange ideas and approaches by presenting state-of-the-art solutions in this interdisciplinary field, including mathematical, computational, and statistical methods and their applications in various aspects of Systems Biology. In this Special Issue, we selected seven papers from the conference to demonstrate some modeling methods for treating the multiscale problems we face in this field. The topics in this issue vary from biological pathway analyses to biomarker identification in diagnosing complex diseases. In particular, Wang et al. studied the crosstalking between pathways to elucidate the controllability of biological systems, and indicated how these pathways have been optimised from a viewpoint of control theory. Sun and Medvedovic developed a method for solving parameter estimation problems in nonlinear dynamical systems, especially for biochemical reaction pathway analysis. Xu et al. modeled a kinetic metabolic network to evaluate fluxes in engineered S. lividans with xiamenmycin-oriented genetic modification. Qin et al. proposed a knowledge-based potential function for facilitating transcription factor binding site prediction. Guo et al. constructed a mathematical programming model for predicting protein structure in its non-compact conformations. Cai et al. developed a signal processing method for sparse electrocardiogram signal recovery. Han and Liu built up a machine-learning-based diagnosis system to identify disease biomarkers using big transcriptomic data. Formerly, he worked at the Key Laboratory of Systems Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences as an Associate Professor. Currently, he works as an Associate Professor at Shandong University. His research interests are Systems Biology and Bioinformatics. Luonan Chen is with the Key Laboratory of Systems Biology, Collaborative Innovation Center of Cancer Medicine, Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China. Luonan Chen obtained ME and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Tohoku University, Japan. Formerly, he was a Professor at Osaka Sangyo University, Osaka, Japan, and is now a Professor and Executive Director at the Key Laboratory of Systems Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He serves as chair of the Technical Committee on Systems Biology at the IEEE SMC Society, and as the founding president of the Computational Systems Biology Society of ORS China. He also serves as an editor and editorial board member for major systems biology journals, e.g., IET Systems Biology, BMC Systems Biology, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Mathematical Biosciences, Journal of the Royal Society Interface, Journal of Theoretical Biology, and Journal of Molecular Cell Biology. His research fields are Systems Biology and Nonlinear Dynamics.
