Abstract:In this study, catechol-conjugated chitosan (CSS) was synthesized to prepare silver nanoparticles in aqueous solution as both a reducing and stabilizing agent. The entire reaction process complied with the principles of green chemistry. The stability and physicochemical properties of CSS-coated silver nanoparticles (CSS–Ag NPs) were well characterized by a series of techniques. A narrow diameter distribution and excellent stability were observed in the target CSS–Ag NPs. Determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the disk diffusion test were applied to evaluate the antibacterial activities with respect to quantity and quality, respectively. The cytotoxic effects on HepG2 cells were also evaluated with a series of assays. The resulting CSS–Ag NPs combined the unique properties of chitosan and silver nanoparticles, showing effective antibacterial activities and low cytotoxicity. The effective toxic concentration of CSS–Ag NPs towards E. coli and S. aureus is too low to damage HepG2 cells. The results demonstrated that CSS–Ag NPs could be a potential candidate for use in biological and pharmaceutical areas to prevent infections caused by microorganisms.

Abstract:Monodisperse nanoporous carbon spheres (NCS) were synthesized in large quantities via a facile hydrothermal synthesis. It is found that the NCS have rough surfaces with a large quantity of uniformly distributed protruding and concaving zones. Large quantities of nanopores of about 0.3 nm in diameter are distributed uniformly on the whole sphere surfaces. The effects of reaction parameters on the surface roughness, sphere diameter and pore size of NCS were investigated. Taking the NCS as substrates, silver nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited onto their surfaces using a one-step ultrasonic electrodeposition procedure. The deposited silver NP has a uniform distribution, a high particle density and a narrow size range of 12-16 nm in diameter. Abstract:A straightforward, mild and green chemistry process had been developed to synthesize well-defined spherical Ag/PS (polystyrene) hybrid materials by using nontoxic L-ascorbic acid as both reducing agent and capping agent. Negatively charged -SO3- could act as a linker between Ag+ ions (Ag nanoparticles) and polystyrene beads. The positively charged PS beads were also prepared by a grafting method, and silver nanoparticles deposition on positively charged and uncharged PS beads were also studied. The Ag nanoparticles were coated on the poly(styrene-co-sulfonic acid) beads via an in situ reduction method. The morphologies of the synthesis samples were investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), (high resolution) transmission electron microscopy (TEM, HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED). The results indicated that the reducing agent and electric charge had an important influence on the deposition of silver nanoparticles. As a potential application, the Ag/PS hybrid materials were embedded with the reporter molecule methylene blue (MB), and the signal intensity of the SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) tags could be enormously increased. So, the Ag/PS hybrid SERS tags can provide unique signal averaging for potentially quantitative analysis, which were used for SERS substrate design and SERS bioassays analysis. The facile and green chemistry preparation method might also provide a development direction to fabricate different nanometal/PS composites by the simple procedure.
Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Silver Nanoparticles Prepared by Cyclodextrin in-situ Reduction Method

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles exhibited different physicochemical properties as compared to their bulk materials due to their high surface-to-volume ratio,which had a broad application prospect.However,the tendency of aggregation of nanoparticles must be overcome by using suitable capping agents.The capping agents played a significant role in stabilizing the metal nanoparticles and influenced their catalytic performance.T herefore,it's necessary to find the proper capping agents of metal nanoparticles.A facile and effective method to produce silver nanoparticles(Ag-NPs)in a water solution was reported. Cyclodextrin(CD),a soluble nontoxic molecule,was made up of six,seven,or eight glucose units,called α-,β-and γ-CD ,respectively .Due to their unique hydrophobic cavities ,CDs were used as an eco-friendly capping agent to stabilize the Ag-NPs by the hydrophobic interactions with the apolar primary faces of CD. In this paper,CD-capped silver nanoparticles were synthesized in an alkaline aqueous solution by reducing silver nitrate with CD and the synergetic catalytic effect between Ag-NP and different kinds of CDs was investigated.Then TEM,FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy were employed to characterize the synthesized Ag-NP.It was revealed that the size distributions of Ag-NP prepared in proper pH and CD concentration were quite uniform and could be controlled(10—30 nm).And a higher pH(pH > 12)or lower CD concentration(cCD< 0.025 mmol/L)would lead to the aggregation of Ag-NP during the synthesis procedure.Recently,it was reported that the CDs and Ag-NP had cooperative catalytic activity during the 4-nitrophenol(4-NP)reduction reactions.During the reaction,the CD-capped Ag-NP had a strong catalytic effect on the reduction of 4-NP,and it was found that β-and γ-CD-capped Ag-NP had a better catalytic activity than that of α-CD-capped Ag-NP.The activation energy of β-CD-capped Ag-NP in the reduction of 4-NP was calculated to be 48.1 kJ/mol,which is lower than that of α-and γ-CD-capped Ag-NP.
Facile Preparation of Nanosilver Particles with Excellent Antimicrobial Activity Via Release of Ionic Silver.

Abstract:Nanosilver particles (SNPs) have been widely exploited in various fields, including the medical sciences due to their excellent inhibitory and bactericidal effects. It is of great importance to prepare SNPs using green synthesis that has environmentally acceptable solvent systems and eco-friendly reducing agents. In the current study, gallic acid was employed as both a reducing agent and a stabilizing agent to synthesize SNPs at mild ambient conditions. The image of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that SNPs exhibited approximately spherical shape with the average diameter of 13.81±2.21 nm. The absorbance peak of obtained SNPs was sharp with the maximum wavelength of 400.5 nm by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, suggesting the formation of small and highly monodispersed SNPs. The antimicrobial potential of the SNPs was evaluated against multiple common pathogenic microbes. The results indicated that the microbial sensitivity to the SNPs was found to vary depending on the microbial species. Among them, the gram-negative bacteria exhibited more sensitive toward SNPs than the gram-positive bacteria. In addition, the N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a silver ion chelator, pretreatment could protect the E. coli and P. aeruginosa from the SNPs inhibition, while the pretreatment of the L-ascorbic acid, an antioxidant against oxidative stress, did not significantly influence the antibacterial effects of the SNPs. These data suggested that the ionic silver release, but not reactive oxygen species (ROS), played a key role in the antimicrobial effect of the SNPs. To sum up, this study provides an environmentally friendly technique for facile synthesis of SNPs with excellent antibacterial potential.
Bifunctional Polymer Brush Reactor for in Situ Synthesis of Hollow Silica-Supported Gold Nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on carriers have received wide attention as catalysts as a result of their excellent stability and catalytic performance. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of hollow silica-supported gold nanocatalysts (SNPs@AuNPs) composed of highly dispersed AuNPs with approximately 4.30 nm using an in situ colloidal polyelectrolyte template strategy. The monodisperse polystyrene nanospheres accompanied by poly[(2-methacryloyloxyethyl)trimethylammonium chloride] brushes were first synthesized. Subsequently, the facile polymer-brush-engaged strategy for the synthesis of hollow SNPs@AuNPs involves in situ reduction of AuNPs, hydrolytic condensation of silica, and a chemical etching process. In combination with dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the as-obtained polymer brushes were proven as effective versatile nanoreactors for the synthesis of AuNPs and silica nanoparticles without any catalysts. Benefiting from the structural advantages, the resultant hollow SNPs@AuNPs manifested superior catalytic activity and reusability for the reduction of p-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride in aqueous solution. With a delicate design, we believe that this synthetic strategy can be extended to fabricate multifunctional nanomaterials with diverse compositions, which would be of great interest in catalysis, energy, and many other important domains.
In situ generation of silver nanoparticles and nanocomposite films based on electrodeposition of carboxylated chitosan

Abstract:<p>Herein, for the first time the electrodeposition of carboxylated chitosan is studied and utilized for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and generation of AgNPs/carboxylated chitosan nanocomposite films. Particularly, AgNPs are in situ synthesized on electrodes or substrates during the electrodeposition. Carboxylated chitosan not only acts as the green reducing agent and stabilizing agent for preparing AgNPs, but also serves as the main component in the electrodeposited nanocomposite film. The experimental results indicate that a smooth and homogeneous film is formed on the silver plate after electrodeposition, and the electrodeposited film can be detached from the silver plate as an independent film. The TEM observation and spectroscopic analysis results confirm the existence of AgNPs (the average size of 10 nm) in the nanocomposite film. The nanocomposite films with various shapes can be fabricated by the spatial selectivity of electrodeposition. In addition, the nanocomposite film containing AgNPs shows favorable antibacterial properties.</p>

In situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles with controllable size distribution and high content in bagasse nanocellulose hydrogel

Abstract:Developing an environment-friendly preparation method for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) composite is significant. However, it remains challenges in size adjustment and content improvement of AgNPs. Here, the NaIO4 oxidation and TEMPO-mediated oxidation were applied to bagasse pulp to prepare nanocellulose (NC) with both carboxyl and aldehyde groups. The aldehyde content of NC could be adjusted in the range of 0.21-1.45 mmol/g by different NaIO4 oxidation times. When the carboxyl groups were protonated, NC with a high length-diameter ratio could construct stable hydrogels in a low concentration at 0.5 wt%. The NC hydrogels showed excellent in situ synthesis ability of AgNPs with abundant pore structure. By regulating the carboxyl group content of NC, the size distribution of synthesized AgNPs could be controlled in the range of 7.14-28.6 nm with high content of 6.79-11.0 %. The NC/AgNPs composite hydrogel exhibited high catalytic degradation activity for 4-nitrophenol and antibacterial activity. This approach for constructing NC hydrogel paves the way for AgNPs composite products with adjustable sizes and high contents.
Preparation of ultrafine and highly loaded silver nanoparticle composites and their highly efficient applications as reductive catalysts and antibacterial agents

Abstract:The size of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and loading amount of Ag NPs onto their substrate/carrier are two key factors for their efficient applications. Herein, we present a facile method for in situ synthesizing ultrafine and highly loaded Ag NPs on the surface of tannin-coated catechol-formaldehyde resin (TA-CFR) nanospheres. TA-CFR nanospheres act as green and highly efficient reducing agents for converting silver ions (Ag + ) into Ag NPs, and the size of resultant Ag NPs is only ∼ 7.5 nm, and the Ag NPs loading capacity of TA-CFR is as high as 61.5 wt%, both of which contribute to the very high specific surface area of Ag NPs. Consequently, the as-synthesized composites show high catalytic performance, and the catalytic rate for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol is almost 10 times higher than that of the control. Meanwhile, composites also possess high antibacterial activity, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) . Furthermore, tannin coating (thickness: ∼ 15 nm) minimizes the aggregation of Ag NPs, and enhances the reusability and stability of resultant Ag NPs, because of their high surface charges (the zeta potential is up to −65.5 ± 1.9 mV) and strong coordination capability with Ag NPs. This work provides a new frontier to develop multifunctional nanomaterials focusing on the green catalyst synthesis and environmental-remedy applications.

Abstract:In this study, biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized by a green approach using an aqueous extract from Codonopsis pilosula (CP) roots as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The formation of CP-AgNPs and CP-AuNPs was confirmed and optimized by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The CP-AgNPs and CP-AuNPs obtained under optimum conditions of metal ion concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time were characterized by high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HR-TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis, field-emission scan electron microscopy (FE-SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) method. It has been found that the biosynthesized CP-AgNPs and CP-AuNPs were formed in spherical shape with an average size of 10 ± 2.5 nm and 20 ± 3.2 nm , respectively. The biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles exhibited selective bacterial activity against three bacterial strains including two Gram-positive bacteria of Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and one Gram-negative bacteria of Escherichia coli . Meanwhile, there was no antibacterial activity detected toward Gram-negative Salmonella enteritidis. CP-AgNPs and CP-AuNPs also manifested an excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of 1,4-dinitrobenzene, 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol, and 4-nitrophenol.

Abstract:This paper presents a facile method for the preparation of silver/polystyrene (Ag/PS) composite microspheres. PS microspheres with carboxyl and nitrile groups on the surfaces were synthesized via a two-step dispersion copolymerization of styrene, itaconic acid, and acrylonitrile in ethanol-water media. Ag/PS composite microspheres were prepared successively by addition of AgNO3 aqueous solution to the dispersion, absorbing to the surfaces of functional PS microspheres, and then reduction of Ag+ ions to silver nanoparticles by aqueous hydrazine hydrate. The results showed that Ag nanoparticles with size of about 50 nm were located on the shell of PS microspheres due to the combined interactions between the carboxyl and nitrile groups of PS microspheres and the in situ formed silver nanoparticles. The as-prepared Ag/PS microspheres showed good catalytic properties.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) utilizing a sonication-assisted electrochemical approach with a common ultrasonic cleaner. Silver nitrate is employed as the precursor and polyvinylpyrrolidone functions as the ligand. The incorporation of sonication is identified as crucial for achieving several benefits such as enhanced mass transfer, improved dispersion of reactants, and the prevention of electrode fouling. Optimized sonication and electrochemical conditions synergistically contribute to a higher yield of well-dispersed Ag NPs, which are characterized by an average size of 10 nm. Furthermore, the electrode's suitability for the continuous synthesis of Ag NPs over an extended period is highlighted owing to effective electrode surface cleaning facilitated by sonication. This cleaning process proves to be essential in maintaining the electrochemical activity of the electrode, ensuring consistency in the synthesis process. The proposed sonication-assisted electrochemical synthesis method not only addresses challenges associated with electrode fouling but also significantly enhances the dispersity and yield of the resulting particles, making it valuable for scalability and practical applications in various fields, including sensors, catalysis, and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Extracellular and intracellular biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by Euglena gracilis (EG) strain and Euglena intermedia (EI) strain are reported in this study. The obtained nanoparticles showed an absorption peak approximates 420 nm in the UV-visible spectrum, corresponding to the plasmon resonance of AgNPs. According to the result of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, the intakes of silver ions by EI and EG are roughly equal. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis of the successful in vivo and in vitro synthesised AgNPs indicated the sizes, ranging from 6 to 24 nm and 15 to 60 nm in diameter, respectively, and a spherical-shaped polydispersal of the particles. The successful formation of AgNPs has been confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis connected to the TEM. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements reveal the presence of bioactive functional groups such as amines are found to be the capping and stabilising agents of nanoparticles. To our knowledge, this is the first report where two kinds of Euglena microalga were used as the potential source for in vivo and in vitro biosynthesis of AgNPs.
Field-assisted Synthesis of SERS-active Silver Nanoparticles Using Conducting Polymers

Abstract:A gradient of novel silver nanostructures with widely varying sizes and morphologies is fabricated on a single conducting polyaniline-graphite (P-G) membrane with the assistance of an external electric field. It is believed that the formation of such a silver gradient is a synergetic consequence of the generation of a silver ion concentration gradient along with an electrokinetic flow of silver ions in the field-assisted model, which greatly influences the nucleation and growth mechanism of Ag particles on the P-G membrane. The produced silver dendrites, flowers and microspheres, with sharp edges, intersections and bifurcations, all present strong surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) responses toward an organic target molecule, mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA). This facile field-assisted synthesis of Ag nanoparticles via chemical reduction presents an alternative approach to nanomaterial fabrication, which can yield a wide range of unique structures with enhanced optical properties that were previously inaccessible by other synthetic routes.

Abstract:Microbial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) is a complex high molecular weight compound secreted from many organisms. In this work, magnetic nanocomposite Fe3O4@EPS of Klebsiella sp. J1 were first synthesized for silver ions (Ag+) wastewater remediation, which synergistically combined the advantages of the easy separation property of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and the superior adsorption capacity of EPS of Klebsiella sp. J1. The physical and chemical properties of Fe3O4@EPS were analyzed comprehensively. Fe3O4@EPS exhibited the well-defined core-shell structure (size 50 nm) with high magnetic (79.01 emu g(-1)). Batch adsorption experiments revealed that Fe3O4@EPS achieved high Ag+ adsorption capacity (48 mg g(-1)), which was also much higher than many reported adsorbents. The optimal solution pH for Ag+ adsorption was around 6.0, with the sorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. Ag+ adsorption on Fe3O4@EPS was mainly attributed to the reduction of Ag+ to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by benzenoid amine (-NH-), accompanied by the chelation between Ag+ and hydroxyl groups, ion exchange between Ag+ and Mg2+ and K+, and physical electrostatic sorption. The repeated adsorption-desorption experiments showed a good recycle performance of Fe3O4@EPS. This study has great importance for demonstrating magnetic Fe3O4@EPS as potential adsorbent to remove Ag+ from contaminated aquatic systems.

Abstract:In this study, the sliver nanoparticles (AgNPs) immobilized on the sintered activated carbon (Ag/SAC) were synthesized by the ultrasonic-assisted impregnation method and were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption. SEM showed that the AgNPs were well embedded in the SAC and immersion time had an important influence on final morphologies of AgNPs. Longer immersing duration caused significant aggregation of the AgNPs. The XRD data revealed that the successful synthesis of AgNPs on the SAC and immobilizing AgNPs on sintered active carbon did not change the crystalline degree of SAC. Texture characteristics were determined by analysis of the N-2/77 K isotherms. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Ag/SAC against Escherichia coli (DH5 alpha) and Staphyloccocus aureus (ATCC 29213) was evaluated by a broth dilution method. MICs such as 5 mg/L (against E. coli) and 10 mg/L (against S. aureus) suggest that Ag/SAC have predominant antibacterial activity compared to active carbon. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles by Extracellular Extracts from Aspergillus japonicus PJ01

Abstract:The present study focuses on the biological synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using extracellular extracts of Aspergillus japonicus PJ01.The optimal conditions of the synthesis process were: 10 mL of extracellular extracts, 1 mL of AgNO3 (0.8 mol/L), 4 mL of NaOH solution (1.5 mol/L), 30 °C, and a reaction time of 1 min. The characterizations of AgNPs were tested by UV-visible spectrophotometry, zeta potential, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that Ag+ was reduced by the extracellular extracts, which consisted chiefly of soluble proteins and reducing sugars. In this work, AgNO3 concentration played an important role in the physicochemical properties and antibacterial properties of AgNPs. Under the AgNO3 concentration of 0.2 and 0.8 mol/L, the diameters of AgNPs were 3.8 ± 1.1 and 9.1 ± 2.9 nm, respectively. In addition, smaller-sized AgNPs showed higher antimicrobial properties, and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against both E. coli and S. aureus were 0.32 mg/mL.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were prepared via in situ reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polymeric micelles as nanoreactors without any additional reductant. The micelles were constructed from the amphiphilic star-shaped copolymer composed of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) segment, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA or DMA) units and oligo(ethylene glycol)monomethyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA or OEG) units. The Ag NPs stabilized by those star-shaped copolymers were characterized using UV–vis spectrum, DLS, TEM and FTIR. It confirmed that PDMAEMA exhibited the reducing property unless pH was above 7. The Ag NPs were sphere-like with a diameter of 10–20 nm, which was independent of the architecture of the copolymer and AgNO3 concentration. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of these Ag NPs was investigated by monitoring the reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) by NaBH4. The result showed that the Ag NPs formed by coordination reduction can be effectively applied in catalytic reaction.
Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering of Silver@Nanoporous Copper Core−Shell Composites Synthesized by an In Situ Sacrificial Template Approach

Abstract:We have successfully developed a silver@nanoporous copper (Ag@NPC) core-shell nanostructure with open and bicontinuous porosity via a facile in situ hydrometallurgy route. The silver shells with a tunable thickness can be deposited on the ligament surfaces of NPC by displacing and sacrificing copper atoms. It is found that the additives of ammonia and PVP molecules play an important role in controlling the formation kinetics of Ag shells and in retaining three-dimensional nanoporosity during the displacement reaction. The resultant porous nanocomposites exhibit a dramatically improved SERS effect compared with that of the as-prepared NPC, and the enhancement factor strongly depends oil the reaction time and Ag shell thickness. This study has significant implications in surface functionalization of nanoporous metals and in developing economic SERS substrates for ultrasensitive instrumentation.
