Abstract:Combining the institution-based and resource-based views, we examined the relationship between institutional environment, multi-level managerial political ties and their interaction effect on corporate cross-regional expansion strategy in the context of transitional China. Using secondary data of 184 cross-regional expansion events from high-tech listed companies during 2005- 2009, we have detailed the category of expansion by their motives of capability-exploration and capability-exploitation. Our findings suggest that, not only for those expansion to regions with better institutional environment, capability-exploration expansion are more favored than capability-exploitation expansion, but also dense managerial political ties functions better to support high resource standards required by capability- exploration expansions. Empirical results also reveal that interaction between institutional environment and managerial political ties has a significant and positive effect on the firm cross-regional expansion.
