Abstract:A zero-refractive-index metamaterial is one in which waves do not experience any spatial phase change, and such a peculiar material has many interesting wave-manipulating properties. These materials can in principle be realized using man-made composites comprising metallic resonators or chiral inclusions, but metallic components have losses that compromise functionality at high frequencies. It would be highly desirable if we could achieve a zero refractive index using dielectrics alone. Here, we show that by employing accidental degeneracy, dielectric photonic crystals can be designed and fabricated that exhibit Dirac cone dispersion at the centre of the Brillouin zone at a finite frequency. In addition to many interesting properties intrinsic to a Dirac cone dispersion, we can use effective medium theory to relate the photonic crystal to a material with effectively zero permittivity and permeability. We then numerically and experimentally demonstrate in the microwave regime that such dielectric photonic crystals with reasonable dielectric constants manipulate waves as if they had near-zero refractive indices at and near the Dirac point frequency.

Abstract:The refractive indices of naturally occurring materials are limited, and there exists an index gap between indices of air and available solid materials. With many photonics and electronics applications, there has been considerable effort in creating artificial materials with optical and dielectric properties similar to air while simultaneously being mechanically stable to bear load. Here, a class of ordered nanolattice materials consisting of periodic thin‐shell structures with near‐unity refractive index and high stiffness is demonstrated. Using a combination of 3D nanolithography and atomic layer deposition, these ordered nanostructured materials have reduced optical scattering and improved mechanical stability compared to existing randomly porous materials. Using ZnO and Al2O3 as the building materials, refractive indices from 1.3 down to 1.025 are achieved. The experimental data can be accurately described by Maxwell Garnett effective media theory, which can provide a guide for index design. The demonstrated low‐index, low‐scattering, and high‐stiffness materials can serve as high‐quality optical films in multilayer photonic structures, waveguides, resonators, and ultra‐low‐k dielectrics.

Abstract:Zero-index materials, characterized by near-zero permittivity and/or permeability, represent a distinctive class of materials that exhibit a range of novel physical phenomena and have potential for various advanced applications. However, conventional zero-index materials are often hindered by constraints such as narrow bandwidth and significant material loss at high frequencies. Here, we numerically demonstrate a scheme for realizing low-loss all-dielectric dual-band anisotropic zero-index materials utilizing three-dimensional terahertz silicon photonic crystals. The designed silicon photonic crystal supports dual semi-Dirac cones with linear-parabolic dispersions at two distinct frequencies, functioning as an effective double-zero material along two specific propagation directions and as an impedance-mismatched single-zero material along the orthogonal direction at the two frequencies. Highly anisotropic wave transport properties arising from the unique dispersion and extreme anisotropy are further demonstrated. Our findings not only show a novel methodology for achieving low-loss zero-index materials with expanded operational frequencies but also open up promising avenues for advanced electromagnetic wave manipulation.

Abstract:An experimentally feasible and promising scheme for realizing simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability in a single-photon off-resonant atomic vapor is suggested by taking full advantage of the mechanism of two-photon resonance that is assisted by atomic phase coherence. The present quantum-coherent atomic vapor can exhibit three-dimensionally isotropic negative refractive index (NRI) at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, and would find potential applications in design of NRI-based quantum optical and photonic devices.

Abstract:Metamaterials with a Dirac-like cone dispersion at the center of the Brillouin zone behave like an isotropic and impedance-matched zero refractive index material at the Dirac-point frequency. Such metamaterials can be realized in the form of either bulk metamaterials with efficient coupling to free-space light or on-chip metamaterials that are efficiently coupled to integrated photonic circuits. These materials enable the interactions of a spatially uniform electromagnetic mode with matter over a large area in arbitrary shapes. This unique optical property paves the way for many applications, including arbitrarily shaped high-transmission waveguides, nonlinear enhancement, and phase mismatch-free nonlinear signal generation, and collective emission of many emitters. This review summarizes the Dirac-like cone-based zero-index metamaterials’ fundamental physics, design, experimental realizations, and potential applications.

Abstract:Materials with a zero refractive index support electromagnetic modes that exhibit stationary phase profiles. While such materials have been realized across the visible and near-infrared spectral range, radiative and dissipative optical losses have hindered their development. We reduce losses in zero-index, on-chip photonic crystals by introducing high-Q resonances via resonance-trapped and symmetry-protected states. Using these approaches, we experimentally obtain quality factors of 2.6 × 103 and 7.8 × 103 at near-infrared wavelengths, corresponding to an order-of-magnitude reduction in propagation loss over previous designs. Disordered Zero-Index Metamaterials Based On Metal Induced Crystallization

Abstract:Zero-index (ZI) materials are synthetic optical materials with vanishing effective permittivity and/or permeability at a given design frequency. Recently, it has been shown that the permeability of a zero-index host material can be deterministically tuned by adding photonic dopants. Here, we apply metal-induced crystallization (MIC) in quasi-random metal-semiconductor composites to fabricate large-area zero-index materials. Using Ag-Si as a model systems, we demonstrate that the localized crystallization of the semiconductor at the metal/semiconductor interface can be used as design parameter to control light interaction in such a disordered system. The induced crystallization generates new zero-index states corresponding to a hybridized plasmonic mode emerging from selective coupling of light to the ångström-sized crystalline shell of the semiconductor. Photonic doping can be used to enhance the transmission in these disordered metamaterials as is shown by simulation. Our results break ground for novel large-area zero-index materials for wafer scale applications and beyond.

Abstract:Over the past few years, zero refraction (ZR) represents an important breakthrough in field of distinctive dynamic optical beam tuning for double-zero-index (media with zero relative permittivity and permeability) photonic crystals (PCs). Because accidental ZR effects for conventional PCs is sensitive to the structural or refractive index parameters, how to enhance the robustness of ZR design is vital for applications. Here, we report a pioneering wave property that reveals a non-accidental Dirac-like cone dispersion composed of low- or high-energy bands, corresponding to dual-insensitive ZR effects for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations based on the same annular PCs. The performance of non-accidental ZR is simultaneously based on refractive index-insensitivity and structural- insensitivity, attributed to a satisfactory filling ratio.

Abstract:Here we re-examine one of the most basic quantities in optics: the refractive index. Considering propagation in a plane, we first develop a general formalism for calculating the direction dependent refractive index in a general bi-anisotropic material. From this we derive the general condition for achieving zero refractive index in a given direction. We show that when the zero-index direction is complex valued the material supports waves that can propagate in only one sense, e.g. in only a clockwise direction. We dub such materials complex axis nihility (CAN) media. Our condition shows that there are an infinite family of both time reversible and time irreversible homogeneous electromagnetic media that support unidirectional propagation for a particular polarization. We give examples showing that scattering from such media results in the complete exclusion of partial waves with one sign of the angular momentum, and that interfaces between such media generally support one-way interface states. As well as giving new sets of material parameters, our simple condition reproduces many of the findings derived using topology, such as unidirectional propagation in gyrotropic media, and spin-momentum locking of evanescent waves.

Abstract:New scientific investigations of artificially structured materials and experiments have exhibit wave manipulation to the extreme. In particular, zero refractive index metamaterials have been on the front line of wave physics research for their unique wave manipulation properties and application potentials. Remarkably, in such exotic materials, time-harmonic fields have infinite wavelength and do not exhibit any spatial variations in their phase distribution. This unique feature can be achieved by forcing a Dirac cone to the center of the Brillouin zone ( point), as previously predicted and experimentally demonstrated in time-invariant metamaterials by means of accidental degeneracy between three different modes. In this article, we propose a different approach that enables true conical dispersion at with twofold degeneracy, and generates zero index properties. We break time-reversal symmetry and exploit a space-time modulation scheme to demonstrate a time-Floquet acoustic metamaterial with zero refractive index. This behavior, predicted using stroboscopic analysis, is confirmed by fullwave finite elements simulations. Our results establish the relevance of space-time metamaterials as a novel reconfigurable platform for wave control.

Abstract:In this article, a highly directive all-dielectric zero-index metamaterial (ZIM) based nanoantenna has been proposed which has the ability to directionally transmit the radiation from an isotropic quantum emitter. The zero-index metamaterial (ZIM) used here, is basically a rods-in-air type photonic crystal, which exhibits zero-index behaviour owing to the existence of a Dirac-cone at the Gamma (Γ) point in its photonic band structure. The emitter is embedded inside the ZIM and the radiation pattern can be controlled by varying the shape and size of the array.

Abstract:Semi-Dirac cones, a type of unique dispersion relation, always exhibit a series of interesting transport properties, such as electromagnetic topological transitions and anisotropic electromagnetic transmission. Recently, dual-band semi-Dirac cones have been found in three-dimensional photonic crystals, presenting great potential in electromagnetic wave regulation. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no report on dual-band semi-Dirac cones and their applications in two-dimensional photonic crystals, and most of two-dimensional systems have only realized semi-Dirac cones at a single frequency. Therefore, we are to realize dual-band semi-Dirac cones in two-dimensional photonic crystals. In this work, a type of two-dimensional photonic crystal that comprises a square lattice of elliptical cylinders embedded in air is proposed. By rotating the elliptical cylinders and adjusting their sizes appropriately, accidental degeneracy at two different frequencies is achieved simultaneously in the center of the Brillouin zone. Using \begin{document}${\boldsymbol{k}} \cdot {\boldsymbol{p}}$\end{document} perturbation theory, the dispersion relations near the two degenerate points are proved to be nonlinear in one direction, and linear in other directions. These results indicate that the double accidental degenerate points are two semi-Dirac points with different frequencies, and two different semi-Dirac cones, i.e. dual-band semi-Dirac cones, are realized simultaneously in our designed photonic crystal. More interestingly, the dual-band semi-Dirac cones exhibit opposite linear and nonlinear dispersion relation along the major axis and the minor axis of the ellipse, respectively. And our photonic crystal can be equivalent to an impedance-matched double-zero index material in the direction of linear dispersion and a single-zero index material in the direction of nonlinear dispersion, which is demonstrated by the perfect transmission in the straight waveguide and wavefront shaping capabilities of electromagnetic waves. Based on the different properties of the equivalent zero-refractive-indices near the frequencies of two semi-Dirac point, the designed Y-type waveguide can be used to realize frequency separation by leading out the plane waves of different frequencies along different ports. We believe that our work is meaningful in broadening the exploration of the band structures of two-dimensional photonic crystals and providing greater convenience for regulating electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:Metamaterials offer unprecedented flexibility for manipulating the optical properties of matter, including the ability to access negative index, ultra-high index and chiral optical properties. Recently, metamaterials with near-zero refractive index have drawn much attention. Light inside such materials experiences no spatial phase change and extremely large phase velocity, properties that can be applied for realizing directional emission, tunneling waveguides, large area single mode devices, and electromagnetic cloaks. However, at optical frequencies previously demonstrated zero- or negative-refractive index metamaterials require the use of metallic inclusions, leading to large ohmic loss, a serious impediment to device applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an impedance matched zero-index metamaterial at optical frequencies based on purely dielectric constituents. Formed from stacked silicon rod unit cells, the metamaterial possesses a nearly isotropic low-index response leading to angular selectivity of transmission and directive emission from quantum dots placed within the material.

Abstract:Metamaterials with a refractive index of zero exhibit physical properties such as infinite phase velocity and wavelength. However, there is no way to implement these materials on a photonic chip, restricting the investigation and application of zero-index phenomena to simple shapes and small scales. We designed and fabricated an on-chip integrated metamaterial with a refractive index of zero in the optical regime. Light refracts perpendicular to the facets of a prism made of this metamaterial, directly demonstrating that the index of refraction is zero. The metamaterial consists of low-aspect-ratio silicon pillar arrays embedded in a polymer matrix and clad by gold films. This structure can be fabricated using standard planar processes over a large area in arbitrary shapes and can efficiently couple to photonic integrated circuits and other optical elements. This novel on-chip metamaterial platform opens the door to exploring the physics of zero index and its applications in integrated optics.

Realization of type-II double-zero-index photonic crystals

Abstract:Some photonic crystals (PCs) with Dirac-like conical dispersions exhibit the property of double zero refractive index (that is, both epsilon and mu near zero (EMNZ)), wherein the electromagnetic waves have an infinite effective wavelength and do not experience any spatial phase change. The Dirac-like cones that support EMNZ are previously thought to present only at the center of the Brillouin zone ($\Gamma$ point) with a zero wavevector (we refer to as type-I EMNZ), which is constrained by the proportional relationship between phase refractive index and wavevector ($n=kc/\omega$). Here, we demonstrate the existence of an anomalous type-II EMNZ in PCs, which is associated with the Dirac-like point at off-$\Gamma$ points. By introducing a wave modulation approach, we theoretically elucidate its physical mechanism, and resolve the paradox of type-II EMNZ with non-zero wavevectors. We then fabricate a type-II EMNZ PC operating at the X point, and experimentally demonstrate that both its effective permittivity and permeability are zero at the Dirac-like point. Type-II EMNZ PCs exhibit a range of intriguing phenomena, including angle-selective transmission, wavefront flattening, a 180$^{\circ}$ phase shift upon transmission, and waveguiding with natural zero radiation loss. The extraordinary properties of type-II EMNZ PCs may open new avenues for the development of angle-selective optical filters, directional light sources, phase-controlled optical switches, ultracompact photonic circuits, nanolasers, and on-chip nonlinear enhancement.

Abstract:Nanostructures made of metallic cube are arranged in Kagome lattice. Transmitted and reflected electromagnetic fields of normally incident circular polarized plane waves are computed using a tri-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm. Equivalent refractive index, equivalent permittivity, equivalent permeability and normalized impedance are calculated using the modified S-parameter retrieval method. Around the 7.912×1014Hz and 9.376×1014Hz, the structure performance for quasi-zero-index frequency bands.

Abstract:We realize double zero-refractive-index material by dielectric photonic crystals (PCs) with hexagonal lattice at the frequencies near the degenerated Dirac point. We demonstrate such PC can be used as a flat lens which has matched impedance to the air and low loss. The performance of the lens is verified by good near-field imaging both theoretically and experimentally. Further, the zero-refractive-index PC is extended to the plane wave generator and concave lens at terahertz frequencies. Our design provides potential for practical applications of wave manipulation.
