Abstract:The general solution for the plane problem of magneto-electro-elastic media is derived in terms of four harmonic functions using strict differential operator theory for the case of distinct material eigenvalues. The two-dimensional fundamental solution for an infinite magneto-electro-elastic plane is further obtained by virtue of the trial-and-error method on the basis of the general solution. A boundary element method program is finally implemented to perform the numerical calculations. It is found that the BEM results agree well with those of the two exact solutions, which are also derived in this paper.

Abstract:To obtain the fundamental solutions for computation of magneto-electro-elastic media by the boundary element method, the general solutions in the case of distinct eigenvalues are derived and expressed in five harmonic functions from the governing equations and the strict differential operator theorem. On the basis of these general solutions, the fundamental solution of infinite magneto-electro-elastic solid are obtained with the method of trial-and-error. Finally, the boundary integral formulation is derived and the corresponding boundary element method program is implemented to perform two numerical calculations (a column under uni-axial tension, uniform electric displacement or uniform magnetic induction, an annular plate simply-supported on outer and inner surfaces under axial loads). The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones.

Abstract:A direct boundary element method (BEM) has been studied in the paper based on a set of sufficient and necessary boundary integral equations (BIE) for the plane harmonic functions. The new sufficient and necessary BEM leads to accurate results while the conventional insufficient BEM will lead to inaccurate results when the conventional BIE has multiple solutions. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that it is beneficial to use the sufficient and necessary BEM, to avoid hidden dangers due to non-unique solution of the conventional BIE.

Abstract:Helmholtz decomposition (HD) is a vector analysis fundamental tool and plays an important role in electromagnetics (EM) and microwave engineering. Instead of applying HD to the EM solving process, this article proposes an integral equation based rigorous HD process to extract and analyze the known EM field. It provides much clearer insight into field coupling and radiation mechanism that is valuable to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) analysis. Compared to the loop-tree based decomposition that is a quasi-HD, the proposed method is rigorous and frequency-independent. The algorithm verification and its application to coupling and resonating problems are presented. This method can provide a novel angle for the EM field analysis used in EMI/EMC, antennas, signal integrity, and relevant areas. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:This paper presents a development of the boundary contour method (BCM) for magneto-electro-elastic media. Firstly, the divergence-free of the integrand of the magneto-electro-elastic boundary element is proved. Secondly, the boundary contour method formulations are obtained by introducing linear shape functions and Green's functions (Computers & Structures, 82(2004):1599-1607) for magneto-electro-elastic media and using the rigid body motion solution to regularize the BCM and avoid computation of the corner tensor. The BCM is applied to the problem of magneto-electro-elastic media. Finally, numerical solutions for illustrative examples are compared with exact ones and those of the conventional boundary element method (BEM). The numerical results of the BCM coincide very well with the exact solution, and the feasibility and efficiency of the method are verified.

Abstract:In this paper, we first supplement two groups of simplified general solution based on previous work. Those results are in terms of harmonic functions and fit for the cases of multiple eigenvalues. Then by trial and error, we obtain the fundamental solutions for three cases for a piezoelectric infinite media by giving the expressions of harmonic functions. Finally, by use of those solutions, we implement a boundary element method program to perform numerical calculations. The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones. Abstract:The boundary knot method is an inherently meshless, integration-free, boundary-type, radial basis function collocation technique for the solution of partial differential equations. In this paper, the method is applied to the solution of some inverse problems for the Helmholtz equation, including the highly ill-posed Cauchy problem. Since the resulting matrix equation is badly ill-conditioned, a regularized solution is obtained by employing truncated singular value decomposition, while the regularization parameter for the regularization method is provided by the L-curve method. Numerical results are presented for both smooth and piecewise smooth geometry. The stability of the method with respect to the noise in the data is investigated by using simulated noisy data. The results show that the method is highly accurate, computationally efficient and stable, and can be a competitive alternative to existing methods for the numerical solution of the problems. Abstract:In this paper, new boundary differential equations for the two-dimensional exterior scattering problem have been derived. It has been shown that the Helmholtz equation can be reduced to an inhomogeneous Bessel's equation in a body-fitted coordinate system. By imposing the Sommerfeld radiation condition to the general solution of the Bessel's equation, an integro-differential equation, which is equivalent to the original Helmholtz equation, can be obtained. The boundary differential equation can then be established by use of the integration by parts to get rid of the integral in the integro-differential equation for high frequency problems. Numerical examples have been presented to demonstrate the validity of the new boundary differential equations.

Abstract:This paper proposes an application of the boundary-element method to two-dimensional electromagnetic field problems. By this method, calculations can be performed using far fewer nodes than by the finite-element method, and unbounded field problems are easily treated without special additional consideration. In addition, the results obtained have fairly good accuracy. In this paper, analyzing procedures of electromagnetic field problems by the boundary-element method, under special conditions, are proposed and several examples are investigated.

Abstract:An improved meshless method is presented, with an emphasis on the detailed description of this new computational technique and its numerical implementations, by investigating the usefulness of a commonly neglected parameter. Two approaches to enforce essential boundary conditions are also thoroughly investigated. Numerical tests on a mathematical function are carried out as a means of validating the proposed method. It is seen that the proposed method is more robust than the conventional ones. Applications in solving electromagnetic problems are also presented.

Abstract:A Wavelet-Galerkin method for numerical calculations of electromagnetic fields was presented using the compactly supported wavelets as the trial functions. The details about the discretization process of 2D electromagnetic problems with arbitrary boundary conditions were discussed, a general approach on boundary conditions was introduced, and a general approach to deal with arbitrary boundary conditions, as well as an exact numerical algorithm for the computation of connection coefficients on a bounded interval, was derived. Numerical results show that the present method is accurate, simple and easy.

Abstract:We developed a fast numerical algorithm for solving the three-dimensional vectorial Helmholtz equation that arises in electromagnetic scattering problems. The algorithm is based on electric field integral equations and is essentially a boundary element method. Nystrom's quadrature rule with a triangular grid is employed to linearize the integral equations, which are then solved by using a right-preconditioned iterative method. We apply the fast multipole technique to accelerate the matrix-vector multiplications in the iterations. We demonstrate the broad applications and accuracy of this method with practical examples including dielectric, plasmonic and metallic objects. We then apply the method to investigate the plasmonic properties of a silver torus and a silver split-ring resonator under the incidence of an electromagnetic plane wave. We show the silver torus can be used as a trapping tool to bind small dielectric or metallic particles.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the cavity scattering problem in an infinite thin plate, where the out-of-plane displacement is governed by the two-dimensional biharmonic wave equation. Based on an operator splitting, the scattering problem is recast into a coupled boundary value problem for the Helmholtz and modified Helmholtz equations. A novel boundary integral formulation is proposed for the coupled problem. By introducing an appropriate regularizer, the well-posedness is established for the system of boundary integral equations. Moreover, the convergence analysis is carried out for the semi- and full-discrete schemes of the boundary integral system by using the collocation method. Numerical results show that the proposed method is highly accurate for both smooth and nonsmooth examples.

Abstract:This paper provides a rigorous analysis of boundary element methods for the magnetic field integral equation on Lipschitz polyhedra. The magnetic field integral equation is widely used in practical applications to model electromagnetic scattering by a perfectly conducting body. The governing operator is shown to be coercive by means of the electric field integral operator with a purely imaginary wave number. Consequently, the continuous variational problem is uniquely solvable, given that the wave number does not belong to the spectrum of the interior Maxwell's problem. A Petrov-Galerkin discretization scheme is then introduced, employing Raviart-Thomas boundary elements for the solution space and Buffa-Christiansen boundary elements for the test space. Under a mild assumption depending only on the geometrical domain, the corresponding discrete inf-sup condition is proven, implying the unique solvability of the discrete problem. An asymptotically quasi-optimal error estimate for numerical solutions is established, and the convergence rate of the numerical scheme is examined. In addition, the resulting matrix system is shown to be well-conditioned regardless of the mesh refinement. Some numerical results are presented to support the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Computation electromagnetic is an important research field of electromagnetic fields and microwave technology subjects. In this paper, the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is extended to solve one type of electromagnetic field problems-electrostatic field problems. Based on Laplace equation of electrostatic field, the derivations and solutions of SBFEM equations for both bounded and unbounded domain problems are expressed in details, and the solution for the inclusion of prescribed potential along the side-faces of bounded domain is also presented in details, then the total charges on the side-faces can be semi-analytically solved. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are illustrated by numerical examples of electromagnetic field problems with complicated field domains, potential singularities, inhomogeneous media and open boundaries. In comparison with analytic solution method and other numerical methods, the results show that the present method has strong ability to resolve potential field singularities analytically by choosing the scaling centre at the singular point, has the inherent advantage of solving the open boundary problems without truncation boundary condition, has efficient application to the problems with inhomogeneous media by placing the scaling centre in the bi-material interfaces, and produces more accurate solution than conventional numerical methods with far less number of degrees of freedom. The method in electromagnetic field calculation can have broad application prospects.

Abstract:We examine the transient scattered and transmitted fields generated when an incident electromagnetic wave impinges on a dielectric scatterer or a coated conductor embedded in an infinite space. By applying a boundary-field equation method, we reformulate the problem in the Laplace domain using the electric field equation inside the scatterer and a system of boundary integral equations for the scattered electric field in free space. To analyze this nonlocal boundary problem, we replace it by an equivalent boundary value problem. Existence, uniqueness and stability of the weak solution to the equivalent BVP are established in appropriate function spaces in terms of the Laplace transformed variable. The stability bounds are translated into time-domain estimates which determine the regularity of the solution in terms of the regularity of the problem data. These estimates can be easily converted into error estimates for a numerical discretization on the convolution quadrature for time evolution.

Abstract:Electromagnetic field problems are often formulated as boundary value problems in unbounded regions. For this reason, the application of conventional numerical methods, such as the finite element method, is difficult. The paper describes a new technique to circumvent this difficulty. The technique is based on the reduction of the field equations in unbounded space to equivalent boundary Galerkin's criterion. Such criterion can be combined with the volume Galerkin's criterion for regions occupied by conductors. A new quasi-finite-element discretization based on the coupled boundary/volume Galerkin's criterion is presented.

Abstract:Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a cavity in a ground plane. The physical process is modelled by Maxwell's equations. In this paper, integral representations of the solutions to the model problem in both fundamental polarizations are derived and studied. Existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the integral equations are established. The integral equations approach forms a basis for numerical solution of the model problem. In particular, for each fundamental polarization, an integral formulation with Garding-type estimates is derived. These formulations provide a basis for variational boundary element methods for solving the cavity problem. The Garding-type estimates imply convergence results for conforming boundary element methods. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
