Three-layer Structured Soft Particles to Construct Photonic Paper Exhibiting Responsive Spatio-Temporal Color Patterns

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs), which generate vivid colors from periodic physical structures, have attracted considerable attention. However, it is still highly challenging to produce large-scale PC films with high mechanical performance. To address the challenge, a new strategy to fabricate PC films from soft structured latex particles instead of widely used hard particles is reported. The soft latex particles are designed to have a three-layer structure: a responsive poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) corona, hard polystyrene (PSt) shell and soft poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA) core. Such latex particles with easily-tunable and well-defined structures are synthesized from RAFT emulsion polymerization. Thanks to the softness, PCs can be easily achieved by latex casting on various substrates without pre-treatment, leading to a dense, crack-free, and mechanically robust PC film. The as-prepared PC films of the particles with PnBA around 55 wt% can generate vivid colors when the "inks" of water and hydrophilic liquids are applied. The full colors can be achieved by tuning particle size or pH value. Taking advantage of the responsive properties to hydrophilic liquids with different volatilities, both temporary and permanent patterns can be constructed on the PC films, leading to spatio-temporal colorful patterns. The method is simple, scalable-up, and versatile, showing great potentials for practical applications.

Abstract:Ink-free rewritable paper has attracted extensive social attention because of its potential advantages in recycling and sustainable utilization of resources. In this work, a double-coating rewritable paper composed of AMT/PVP and PDMS/SiO2 with superhydrophobicity, fast photoresponsivity, and excellent photochromic repeatability is developed. As an organic–inorganic hybrid photochromic material, the well conjugated system of rewritable paper greatly improves the coloring process. In ambient conditions, the sample can be colored in seconds under ultraviolet radiation and reaches saturation within 3 min, whose reflectance at 670 nm decreases to 3.53%. Despite the sample being treated of 15 coloring-erasing cycles, its color intensity has no significant change. More importantly, the sample surface possesses excellent superhydrophobic properties, endowing it with stability of photochromic properties when contacting water. Given the advantages of excellent photochromism, waterproof property, low cost and easy scale production, this superhydrophobic rewritable paper holds a promising prospect for convenient and practical usage.

Abstract:The massive use of paper has resulted in significant negative impacts on the environment. Fortunately, recent progress has been made in the field of rewritable paper, which has great potential in solving the increasing demand for paper while minimizing its environmental footprint. In this work, we report a green and economic strategy to develop ink-free rewritable paper by introducing hydrochromic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in paper and using water as the sole trigger. When exposed to water or acidic solvents, two kinds of imino COFs change their colors reversibly from red to black. Additionally, a new visible absorption band appears, indicating that it can be transformed into another structure reversibly. This reversibility may be due to the isomerization from the diiminol to an iminol/cisketoenamine and its inability to doubly tautomerize to a diketoenamine. Specifically, we prepared the rewritable paper by loading these two COFs onto filter paper by using the decompression filtration method. When exposed to water, the paper undergoes a color change from red to black, which shows promising potential for applications in water-jet printing. Additionally, there is no significant performance degradation after 20 uses and 10 days between, further highlighting their potential as rewritable papers. To further improve its uniformity, we take the interface polymerization strategy to yield highly crystalline and more compact membranes, which are then transferred to paper to prepare writable papers. Our research has opened up a way for the application of COFs as a water-based printing material.

Abstract:The days of rewritable paper are coming, printers of the future will use water-jet paper. Although several kinds of rewritable paper have been reported, practical usage of them is rare. Herein, a new rewritable paper for ink-free printing is proposed and demonstrated successfully by using water as the sole trigger to switch hydrochromic dyes on solid media. Water-jet prints with various colours are achieved with a commercial desktop printer based on these hydrochromic rewritable papers. The prints can be erased and rewritten dozens of times with no significant loss in colour quality. This rewritable paper is promising in that it can serve an eco-friendly information display to meet the increasing global needs for environmental protection.

Abstract:A rewritable photonic crystal (PC) paper as an environmentally friendly and low-resource-consuming material for information storage and spreading has gradually become a research hotspot. In this work, a novel rewritable PC paper with inkless writing and double-sided rewritability properties was developed. A double-sided epoxy resin PC paper exhibiting an inverse opal structure and a bright structural color was fabricated using the sacrificial template method. Carbon black was doped into the material to increase color saturation and purity while preventing light transmission and protecting the double-sided structural color from interference. The force of sliding friction and deformation triggered by capillary pressure as well as swelling-triggered recovery of the inverse opal structure led to an easy rewriting of the PC paper. The PC paper exhibited excellent rewritability even after 50 runs of the rewriting process. Given the inkless and double-sided rewriting, this study provides a new method for the preparation of rewritable PC papers.

Abstract:Interest and effort toward new materials for rewritable paper have increased dramatically because of the exciting advantages for sustainable development and better nature life cycle. Inspired by how nature works within living systems, herein, we have used fluorans, as a concept verification, to endow original acidochromic, basochromic or photochromic molecules with broader properties, such as switchable with solvent, water, heat, electricity, stress, other force, etc., via simplified methods (i.e., via variation of submolecular structure or microenvironments). The hydrochromic visual change and reversible behavior of selected molecules have been explored, and the primary mechanism at the atomic or subatomic level has been hypothesized. In addition, several newly demonstrated hydrochromic fluorans have been utilized for water-jet rewritable paper (WJRP), which exhibit great photostability, high hydrochromic contrast, and fast responsive rate and which can be reused at least 30 times without significant variation. The water-jet prints have good resolution and various colors and can keep legibility after a few months or years. This improved performance is a major step toward practical applications of WJRP.

Abstract:This study describes a facile approach for the preparation of rewritable paper substrate and multicolor aqueous ink. The paper substrate is used for writing/printing/painting with desirable colored ink. Besides, writing with 'security ink' has also been realized. At ambient conditions, the written/printed/painted information can be retained for prolonged time. The paper substrate can be reused for multiple times after washing with an aqueous EDTA solution. As sustainable and eco‐friendly replacements to conventional paper, rewritable paper is a very attractive alternative for communication, information circulation, and storage. Development is made for rewritable paper using chromogenic materials that change its color in presence of external stimuli. However, the new techniques have faced several major challenges including feasible operational method, eco‐friendly approach. Herein, a simple, convenient, and eco‐friendly strategy is described for the preparation of rewritable paper substrate, and multi colored ink for efficient use in writing, painting or printing purpose. In addition, writing with "invisible ink" on the rewritable paper can be realized for potential anti‐counterfeiting application. The written, painted, or printed information on the paper substrate can be easily erased using an aqueous solution. Thus, the original paper can be retrieved and the paper substrate can be reused multiple times. Besides, the written or printed information can be retained for a prolonged time at ambient conditions. Overall, this approach shows the rewritable paper as a prototype of multicolor writing/painting application, offering a sustainable solution for reducing paper waste and promoting environmental stewardship.

Chelating Coordination Regulated Photochromic Electrospun Nanofibers for Waterproof and Long-Color-Retention Rewritable Wearables

Abstract:Photochromic materials with rapid color-switching, long color retention times, and rewritability are crucial for meeting the requirements of future rewritable ink-free media. However, these requirements are challenging to satisfy simultaneously due to the inherent constraints among these features. Herein, a novel photochromic nanofiber nonwoven fabric was designed and constructed based on a conjugated organic-inorganic hybrid structure through electrospinning and hot-pressing techniques. The as-prepared fabric can change color in merely 5 s under UV irradiation and can reach saturation within 2 min. In addition, upon the introduction of a potent metal chelator, its color retention time exceeds 14 days under ambient conditions, significantly longer than that of most rewritable materials recently reported (several hours to 5 days). Moreover, the fabric exhibits high writing resolution and can be photoprinted and heat-erased for over 100 cycles while still retaining 96% of its initial reflectivity. Hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane provides the fabric with excellent waterproof and antifouling properties, thus preventing the composite from swelling or collecting graffiti due to moisture or dust. This work exploits a competitive approach for designing flexible, rewritable, and superior functional wearables with practical applications.

Abstract:Rewritable paper has recently become prevalent in both academic research and marketplace due to the potential environmental advantages, including forest conservation, pollution reduction, energy saving and resource sustainability. However, its real-life applications are limited by a lack of effective strategy to realize multicolour and water-jet printing on rewritable paper with long legible image-lasting times. Herein, we report an effective strategy to construct rewritable paper based on colour or luminescence switching induced by dynamic metal–ligand coordination. This type of rewritable paper can be conveniently utilized for multicolour water-jet printing by using aqueous solutions containing different metal salts as ink. In addition, the printed images on the water-jet rewritable paper can be retained for a long time (> 6 months), which shows great progress compared to previous work. We believe that this type of rewritable paper could be considered as a prototype for multicolour water-jet printing to meet the practical needs.

Abstract:Rewritable paper, as an environment-friendly approach of information transmission, has potential possibility to conserve energy and promote a sustainable development of our society. Recently, photonic crystals (PCs) have become a research hotspot in the development of rewritable paper. However, there are still many shortcomings that limit the further application of PC paper, such as slow response sensitivity, short-cycle lifetime, poor storage stability, and so on. Herein, we constructed an optically rewritable azobenzene inverse opals (AZOIOs) with a thin film (ca. 1 μm) plated on an inverse opal structure based on the UV/vis switchable structure color of the sample. The top thin film acts as a protective layer to avoid the large deformation of the pore structure and the bottom inverse opal structure with refractive index/pore structure change that provides reversible structure color. Large, reversible, and rapid bandgap shift (ca. 60 nm, 2 s) of AZOIOs can be repeated more than 100 times under alternating UV/vis irradiation based on isomerization of high content of the azobenzene group. On-demand long-time preservation pattern can be obtained by the appearance of azobenzene's intrinsic color. The proof of concept for rewritable PC paper is demonstrated herein. Reversible Writing/Re‐Writing Polymeric Paper in Multiple Environments

Abstract:Compared with traditional paper relying on cellulose, the polymeric paper written by light can satisfy more multi-environmental stability and reusability for sustainable development. Herein, proposed for the first time, a novel multifunctional polymeric paper with a patch-sewing structure is designed, presenting the reversible writing/re-writing performance. Meanwhile, a series of Fe-based oxides with various submicron structures inherited from metal–organic framework templates are reported, in which the optimum one exhibited 95.04% absorbance from the finite difference time domain simulation and realized photothermal conversion instantaneously (soaring to 300 °C within 38 s). Given the distinguished mechanical properties (the tensile strength of 21.34 MPa and elongation at break of 546.06%), shape-memory ability, and multi-environmental stability, the composites are perfect for information recording. Due to the addition of the liquid crystal phase serving as the ink on the paper, the stress concentration and destruction can be recorded on the surface while it can recover to the initial situation by near-infrared irradiation. Moreover, the remote writing with precision triggered by a focused light source can be achieved in multiple situations (air, water, and ice), which paved the way for the next generation of paper, especially in extreme conditions like deep-water or aerospace.

Abstract:Bright structural colors with an angular-independent character are in increasing demand in many fields such as pigments, buildings, sensors, color displays, and anti-counterfeiting labels. However, the structural colors produced by amorphous colloidal assemblies with low refractive index contrast or without black additives often exhibit low color visibility and low liquid-bleaching resistibility. Herein, large-scale and angle-independent structural colors were constructed from Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal quasi-amorphous arrays (QAAs) prepared through a rapid "spraying" process. Due to the high-refractive-index and intrinsic black nature of Fe3O4, the coatings exhibit high brightness of structural colors even on white substrates under ambient lighting conditions. Moreover, as-obtained structural colors possess the ability of antiliquid bleaching and solvent-responsiveness. More importantly, flexible Fe3O4@SiO2/PDMS photonic paper can be fabricated by permeation of PDMS into the voids of Fe3O4@SiO2 colloidal QAAs. This QAAs-based photonic paper shows the ability to infuse silicone oils into its structure, locally swelling it and changing the reflected color. In turn, the resulting colored patterns can be easily erased by applying ethanol or low molecular weight silicone oils. The as-prepared photonic paper exhibits excellent durability and is rewritable at least 50 times without any significant changes in performance. Abstract:Mechanochromic photonic crystals are attractive due to their force-dependent structural colors; however, showing unrecordable color and unsatisfied performances, which significantly limits their development and expansion toward advanced applications. Here, a thermal-responsive mechanochromic photonic crystal with a multicolor recordability-erasability was fabricated by combining non-close-packing mechanochromic photonic crystals and phase-change materials. Multicolor recordability is realized by pressing thermal-responsive mechanochromic photonic crystals to obtain target colors over the phase-change temperature followed by fixing the target colors and deformed configuration at room temperature. The stable recorded color can be erased and reconfigured by simply heating and similar color-recording procedures respectively due to the thermoswitchable on-off mechanochromism of thermal-responsive mechanochromic photonic crystals along with solid-gel phase transition. These thermal-responsive mechanochromic photonic crystals are ideal rewritable papers for ink-freely achieving multicolor patterns with high resolution, difficult for conventional photonic papers. This work offers a perspective for designing color-recordable/erasable and other stimulus-switchable materials with advanced applications.

Abstract:Rewritable paper is meaningful to the recyclable and sustainable utilization of environmental resources and thus has been extensively investigated for several decades. In this work, we demonstrated an efficient and convenient strategy to fabricate rewritable paper based on reversible hydrochromism of donor–acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). The kinetics and efficiency of isomerization could be well-controlled by adjusting the surrounding temperature and humidity. Monocolored rewritable paper was prepared by coating cyclic DASA·xH2O on the paper surface. Writing, printing, stamping and patterning were realized on the rewritable paper. The information could be controllably erased by treatment in a humid atmosphere. More importantly, the rewritable paper was upgraded to multicolored by combination of two DASA materials. Programmable Coloration and Patterning on Reconfigurable Chiral Photonic Paper

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals are widely employed to construct rewritable paper, where patterns are written and erased repeatedly via color switching. The working principle mainly lies in the changes on the lattice constant of periodic structures, which, however, restricts the localized color tuning of the recorded patterns and thus limits multicolor information transfer. Herein, a novel strategy is reported to write, erase, and importantly to tune the colors by developing unique light‐driven cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) that possess self‐organized helical superstructures with two structural elements of pitch lengths (lattice constant) and helical axes (reconfiguration). Reconfiguration of the helical axes provides two high‐contrast optical states for writing and erasing by pressure and electricity, whereas precise photocontrol of the pitch lengths contributes to localized color tuning. These features primarily capitalize on the light‐driven CLC with diverse photostationary colors, which is induced by a newly designed binary chiral system and confined in the polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer. Distinct multicolor patterns are mechanically written, optically tuned, and electrically erased on the rewritable photonic paper in a programmable manner. Such photonic paper has potential to record, program, and remember optically addressed images in visualized color information and user‐interactive display technologies. A novel strategy to write, erase, and notably to tune patterns on rewritable photonic paper is reported by developing light‐driven cholesteric liquid crystals with reconfigurable helical axes and phototunable pitch lengths. Multicolor patterns are programmed in succession via mechanically writing, optically tuning, and electrically erasing, which opens an avenue to record, program, and remember intricate images in user‐interactive display technologies.

Abstract:This work firstly demonstrates structural colors on transparent wood paper by demonstrating periodic microstructures on its surface. Three basic colors of red, green, and blue are demonstrated and the color can be continuously regulated by the periodicity and observation angle of the structures. Vivid color prints can be realized on the transparent wood paper by structural design. Structural colors are recognized as environmentally friendly colors compared with traditional pigments and dyes. However, their structural substrates are usually made of polymers or solid materials that are difficult to decompose naturally. Finding high‐performance bio‐degradable substrates is essential to protect the environment. Transparent wood paper is a competitive candidate because of its excellent biodegradability, high transparency, and strength. Here, it is firstly demonstrated that structural color prints can be fabricated monolithically on transparent wood paper. By mimicking the color generation structures in nature, nanostructures are imprinted on the surface of delignified wood and exhibit diverse structural colors. Three basic colors of red, green, and blue are demonstrated, and the colors can be continuously tuned by the periodicity and observation angle. Vivid color prints can be realized on the transparent wood paper by structural design. The structural colored transparent wood paper is flexible and bendable, and colors will not fade after 12‐month exposure to natural sunshine. Furthermore, the structural color prints on transparent wood paper are biodegradable and can be discarded directly after use. Both the structural colored relief and the transparent wood are eco‐friendly, opening a new door to next‐generation paper‐based disposable, sustainable, and green optical/photonic devices.
