Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are categorized as either mobile or fixed crystals, depending on chain mobility in the crystalline region. In this work, we investigate molecular dynamics and phase structure in the cocrystal consisting of fixed and mobile polymer crystals by solid-state (ss) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that (i) the mobile component begins large amplitude motions associated with crystal-crystal transition, while fixed ones keep their rigidity in the cocrystal, and (ii) asymmetric molecular dynamics leads to nanosegregations into mobile- and fixed-rich domains in the cocrystal below the melting temperature (Tm). The observed phase separation induced by asymmetric molecular dynamics is similar to the phase separation of the miscible amorphous polymer blend; however, it is limited to two dimensions due to the parallel packing of the stems inside the cocrystal, as well as chain connectivity at the crystalline-amorphous boundary.

Abstract:A recently developed technique, i.e., two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) correlation spectroscopy, is used to study the thermal behavior of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)-graft-poly(epsilon-caprolactone), a new synthesized highly grafted copolymer. The use of the 2D IR approach to analyze temperature-dependent spectra collected in situ during the temperature elevation process effectively enhanced the spectral resolution and revealed details on the hydrogen bonding and conformational change which are not easily detected in the traditional one-dimensional spectra. The sequence of the spectral changes of different OH and CH2 fundamental vibrations during heating the polymer was inferred from the signs of the asynchronous peaks. Evidence that the conformational changes of the methylene groups precede the loosening of hydrogen bonds is provided.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) converts easily into a thermo-reversible gel through crystallization by standing at room temperature in cyclohexanone. In this study, the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra were measured continuously at room temperature during the conversion of the solution into a gel. The IR difference spectra derived from these spectra by absorbance subtraction clearly indicate the presence of PVDF alpha-crystallites in the gel due to the presence of absorption bands corresponding to the TG(+)TG(-) conformation of the alpha-phase. In the time interval from 25 to 45 min after the beginning of the experiment, the IR bands of PVDF increased dramatically, indicating the conversion of polymer chains from random statistical coils to the ordered TG(+)TG(-) conformation (alpha-form). In the time interval from 45 to 90 min, the IR bands of PVDF increased slowly, reflecting no further crystallization. Using two-dimensional (2D) IR analysis, it could be shown that the v(C=O) absorption band of cyclohexanone changed during the gelation process. During the conformational ordering process (25-45 min), the v(C=O) absorption band of the cyclohexanone dimer (1707 cm(-1)) decreased while the corresponding band of the monomer at 1718 cm(-1) increased. Furthermore, a new band at 1695 cm(-1) increased, which could be assigned to C=O groups of the solvent interacting with the CF2 groups in the polymer chain. The bands of the crystalline PVDF share positive cross-peaks with the bands of cyclohexanone, which indicates that the chain of PVDF changed prior to the cyclohexanone molecules during the conformational ordering process. However, these positive cross-peaks disappeared during the crystallization process, which means that the chain of PVDF changed synchronously with the solvent molecules. As for the bands of PVDF chains, the hand at 762 cm(-1) varied prior to the bands at 873 cm(-1) and 796 cm(-1) during the conformational ordering process. The 762 cm(-1) absorption is assigned to the CF2 group of PVDF, the 873 cm(-1) absorption involves the C-C group of PVDF, and the 796 cm(-1) band is attributed to the CH2 groups of PVDF. Thus, the CF2 functionalities change faster than the C-C and CH2 groups. However, the correlation cross-peaks between 762 cm(-1) and 873 cm(-1) and at 796 cm(-1) disappeared during the later state of the gelation process. At the same time, the bands of PVDF and solvent still varied, which suggests that it is a physical interaction process between PVDF chain and solvent.

Abstract:Ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) is widely used in the packaging industry due to its high barrier property. Its crystallization behavior is of great importance to regulate and control production properties. The crystallization kinetics and the corresponding crystalline structure of EVOH were investigated by a combination of fast scanning chip calorimetry (FSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. A bimodal dependence of crystallization rate against the crystallization temperature was established for EVOH. The sample preferred to form a mesophase from 60 to 100 °C, while it favored inducing an orthorhombic phase from 100 to 140 °C. As a result, the temperature dependency of the crystallization rate shows a double-parabolic behavior with different values of half time of crystallization. The equilibrium melting onset temperature is extrapolated as 222 °C using Hoffman–Weeks’ method. The trend of crystallinity and crystallization enthalpy matched well with each other as the crystallization temperature increased.

Abstract:Two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) correlation spectroscopy was applied to study the conformation change during poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) melting process. The absorption spectral changes are observed with increasing temperature. These observed changes in IR spectra might be attributed to three kinds of PVDF components: α-PVDF, β-PVDF, and amorphous component. 2D IR correlation analysis indicates that during melting process three kinds of PVDF component change asynchronously: above all, the amorphous component relaxes its molecule chains, and then the β-PVDF transfers to amorphous component, finally the α-PVDF transfers to amorphous component.

Abstract:Generalized two-dimensional (2D) Fourier transform infrared correlation spectroscopy was used to investigate the effect of the comonomer compositions on the crystallization behavior of two types of biosynthesized random copolymers, poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) and poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate). The carbonyl absorption band around 1730 cm−1 was sensitive to the degree of crystallinity. 2D correlation analysis demonstrated that the 3-hydroxyhexanoate units preferred to remain in the amorphous phase of the semicrystalline poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) copolymer, resulting in decreases in the degree of crystallinity and the rate of the crystallization process. The poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) copolymer maintained a high degree of crystallinity when the 3-hydroxyvalerate fraction was increased from 0 to 25 mol % because of isodimorphism. The crystalline and amorphous absorption bands for the carbonyl bond for this copolymer, therefore, changed simultaneously. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The crystallization behavior of biosynthesized poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) film cast from 1,1,2,2-tetrachloromethane was studied by in situ FTIR spectroscopy and two-dimensional (2D) correlation analysis. Time-dependent in situ FTIR spectral variations in the C=O stretching region (1,780-1,700 cm(-1)) were monitored and analyzed by a series of data processing methods, including calculation of difference spectrum and second derivative spectrum, Fourier self-deconvolution, curve-fitting and 2D correlation analysis. Four bands have been resolved from the 2D correlation analysis, and the following overall sequential order among the intensity changes of the four bands has been obtained at 1,750 > 1,739 > 1,722 > 1,715 cm(-1). Combining with the other data processing methods, a curve-fitting approach has been employed to reveal that there are probably five component bands under the C=O band profile, centered at 1,746; 1,737; 1,728; 1,722; and 1,712 cm(-1). Detailed analysis on the in situ component band intensity variations in the C=O stretching region indicates that the crystalline and amorphous band intensities change simultaneously during the crystallization process, with no local sequential order. Further analysis on the relative area percentage changes of the five component bands suggests that the crystalline component only changes in a fully cooperative manner with part of the amorphous component at the initial crystallization period.

Abstract:The molecular level premelting process of purified biosynthesized polyester poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) or P(HB-co-HV) (20.4% HV) was investigated by two-dimensional Fourier transform infrared (2D FT-IR) correlation spectroscopy. Intensity variations and band shifts in the characteristic spectral regions for C=O groups (1710–1770 cm−1), C-H groups (2910–3010 cm−1), and C-O-C groups (1220–1310 cm−1) were selected for a detailed study of the thermally induced phase transition of the copolymer. The 2D correlation approach successfully demonstrated that a fully amorphous liquid-like structure was formed following the disappearance of the crystals in the sample, by going through an intermediate state related to the lost conformation of the highly ordered and helical polyester main chain.

Abstract:The polymorphism and side group location of a series of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) and their hydrolytic products (EVOH) have been investigated by high-resolution cryogenic Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The experimental results indicated that FTIR spectra can provide direct evidence for side groups entering the crystal lattice of ethylene segments. Through the characterization of the specific IR band variation, it was proved that the hydroxyl group of EVOH enters the crystal lattice, while the side groups of EVA exist predominantly in the amorphous region. The polymorphism and the crystalline phase transformation were investigated for the two series of ethylene copolymers. It was proved that there is only an orthorhombic crystalline phase for all the EVOH copolymers. For EVA copolymers, however, besides the occurrence of a normal orthorhombic crystalline phase, a monoclinic crystalline phase was also detected for the samples with a relatively high content of side groups. The monoclinic crystalline phase is a substable structure and is mainly affected by the content of the side groups and the crystallization conditions. The content of monoclinic crystals does not increase linearly with branching, but to some extent, the increase of the side group content is propitious to the formation of a monoclinic crystalline state. Different heat-treatment methods have great influence on the polymorphism of EVA copolymers. With the increase of the annealing temperature, the monoclinic crystal was gradually transformed to an orthorhombic crystal.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the polymorphism, crystalline phase transformation, and side group location of ethylene copolymers (poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate), ab. EVA and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol), ab. EVOH). Sample films were prepared through a melt-pressing method, and submitted to cryogenic FTIR spectra measurement. Besides the occurrence of a normally orthorhombic crystalline phase (OCP), a monoclinic crystalline phase (MCP) was also detected for EVA copolymers with a relatively higher comonomer content (>14wt%). The annealing temperatures greatly influence the transformation from MCP to OCP. As for EVOH copolymers, only thermodynamically stable OCP was found to exist in the crystalline region, and the hydroxyl groups were proved to enter the crystalline region of ethylene segments, while the side groups of EVA exist predominantly in the amorphous region.

Abstract:The investigation of the gradual cooling crystallization process of α-trans -1,4-polyisoprene ( α -TPI) was carried out for different wavenumber regions by conventional spectral analysis and two-dimensional correlation infrared spectroscopy (2DIR) methods. Interestingly, an intermediate state has been confirmed by the fascinating intensity variation of the 1666 cm −1 band, and the motion of side-chain (CH 3 group) seems to be the initial driving force and precondition for forming the ordered 21 helix conformation. It is also found that the occurrence for the splitting of the CH 3 group-related bands is consistent with the appearance of the intermediate state, indicating that the interchain interactions between CH 3 groups play an important role in controlling the intermediate state and should be the primary driving force for stabilizing the specific 21 helix conformation.

Abstract:FTIR spectroscopy is a powerful technique for detecting the structural variation of semicrystalline polymers. Here in this paper, we report the application of high resolution FTIR spectroscopy in the structural characterization of polyethylene and ethylene copolymers, including high density polyethylene (HDPE), ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA), and their hydrolytic products (EVOH). For ethylene copolymers, high-resolution cryogenic FTIR spectroscopy revealed that there exist polymorphism phenomena and crystalline phase transformation as experimental temperature was changed; FTIR spectral study also showed that the hydroxyl groups of EVOH enter crystalline region, while the side branches of EVA copolymers exist predominantly in amorphous region. For HDPE, based on the results of high-resolution variable temperature FTIR spectroscopy, linear correlations between IR crystalline band (730/720 cm 1 ) shifts and the variation of unit cell parameters of HDPE have been established.

Abstract:In the present contribution, two-dimensional ATR-FTIR spectroscopy was used to study the diffusion of water in poly (epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL). In the spectral region of the v(OH) stretching vibration of water, four absorption bands (3635, 3560, 3411, and 3220 cm(-1)) can be identified. The higher wavenumber band pair at 3635 and 3560 cm(-1) is assigned to the antisymmetric and symmetric OH stretching vibrations, respectively, of water which is partially hydrogen-bonded to the carbonyl groups of PCL, whereas the lower frequency band pair at 3411 (antisymmetric) and 3220 cm(-1) (symmetric) is attributed to the OH stretching vibrations of bulk water which is fully hydrogen-bonded to other water molecules. From the asynchronous map of a 2D correlation analysis of spectra recorded during the diffusion of water into PCL, it was concluded that during the diffusion process the water molecules first penetrate into the free volume (microvoids) of the PCL matrix or are molecularly dispersed in the polymer matrix and then form hydrogen bonds with the C=O groups of the polymer.

Abstract:The crystal structure transition of syndiotactic polystyrene film from the helical conformation to the more stable planar zigzag conformation during a heating process was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy in combination with two-dimensional (2D) correlation analysis and perturbation-correlation moving-window 2D analysis. The sequence of different conformations during the transition was investigated by analyzing two-dimensional FT-IR correlation spectra in the spectral ranges of 800-700 cm(-1) and 600-500 cm(-1). It was observed that the conformation of delta helical changes prior to gamma helical, and the gamma helical phase is faster than the alpha' planar zigzag phase. By utilizing the 2D asynchronous correlation spectra, the 744 cm(-1) band, which is usually incorporated in the broad 750 cm(-1) band, can now be uniquely attributed as the alpha' zigzag configuration for the first time. Furthermore, by employing thermal perturbation, the shorter helical segments consisting of m = 7-12 and in = 12-20 monomeric units were disturbed in a shorter time than the longer helical segments m = 20-30 during the heating process.

Abstract:Two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) correlation spectroscopy was applied to study the structural changes occurring in the decomposition of PHEA-co-MMA/SiO2. Complicated absorption spectral changes were observed in the heating process. 2D IR analysis indicates that during heating, covalent bonds, (Si–O–C), between the polymer and the inorganic moiety were formed, which was the main factor in the improvement in thermal properties of the hybrids such as the decomposition temperatures (Td). The thermal stability of the hybrids was also studied by solid-state 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy and TGA tests. Their results complemented each other well.

Abstract:The fine structure of the methylene rocking bands obtained by high resolution and cryogenic FTIR spectroscopy was utilized to characterize the crystalline behavior of polyethylene (PE) segments in an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers. The hydrogen bonds among the carboxyl groups play a cross-linking role and prevent the PE segments from adopting the stable orthorhombic form. As a result, a lower content of the orthorhombic form and higher contents of the monoclinic form and amorphous region of PE segments are found in the samples. Quenching treatment of the samples strengthens this effect. On the other hand, the crystallization of the PE segments causes strain on the hydrogen bonds among carboxyl groups. Consequently, the distorted carboxyl dimers are easy to break at elevated temperature.

Abstract:The sequence distribution and crystalline structure of a series of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) copolymers with different VA contents were investigated with high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). It was found that most of the VA segments are isolated in the main chain, though three kinds of sequence distributions (VA–VA head to tail, VA–E–VA head to tail, and VA–E–E–VA head to tail) exist in the EVA copolymers with higher VA content. Furthermore, two kinds of alkyl-branching signals were detected in the high temperature 13C NMR spectra of EVA copolymers. Solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopic investigation indicated that only orthorhombic phase exists in the crystalline region of the EVA copolymers with lower VA content. For the EVA copolymers with higher VA content, however, besides the occurrence of orthorhombic crystalline phase, monoclinic phase was also detected. As a metastable state, monoclinic phase is mainly affected by VA content as well as the thermal treating history.

Although it is such a low amount of PEO that it cannot form any crystals, the PEO block undergoes some structural change in the cooling process. It was established that the PCL constituent crystallized quickly, and then forced the noncrystallizable PEO constituent to form a tighter structure (helical conformation) from the trans zigzag conformation. Besides, through the 2D IR analysis, more exact and detailed assignments of the overlapped CH2 bands have been made – the 1193cm−1 band is attributed to methylene next to the carbonyl group, whereas the 1162cm−1 and 1295cm−1 bands are assigned to other common methylenes.
