Abstract:We examine the dynamics of semiconductor lasers coupled in a ring configuration. The lasers, which have stable output intensity when isolated, behave chaotically when coupled unidirectionally in a closed chain. In this way, we show that neither feedback nor bidirectional coupling is necessary to induce chaotic dynamics at the laser output. We study the synchronization phenomena arising in this particular coupling architecture and discuss its possible application to chaos-based communications. Next, we extend the study to bidirectional coupling and propose an appropriate technique to optical chaos encryption/decryption in closed chains of mutually coupled semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:We reviewed our recent studies on chaotic microcavity lasers. Although most microcavities are designed to have regular shapes, boundary roughness, which is introduced unintentionally during the fabrication process, can throw the regular ray dynamics into chaos. Fortunately, the dynamical localization makes the perform- ance of microcavity lasers robust with respect to the boundary roughness and corresponding ray chaos. In a chaotic microcavity, the lasing modes may be pulled away from the cavity boundary to avoid the reduction of lasing gain by surface recombination. Moreover, the carriers injected to the central region of a cavity can contribute to lasing. Despite counter-intuitive, a chaotic microcav- ity laser could produces directional output beams. Unfortunately the threshold of chaotic microcavity lasers is usually high. We demon- strated that the lasing threshold in a fully chaotic open microcavity can be minimized by tailoring its shape factor.
Broadband chaos generation utilizing a wavelength-tunable monolithically integrated chaotic semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband and wavelength-tunable chaotic laser by using a monolithically integrated wavelength-tunable chaotic semiconductor laser subject to optical feedback. The chip consists of a gain section, a distributed Bragg reflection grating section, a semiconductor optical amplifier section, and a phase section. By applying an optical feedback loop to the chaotic semiconductor laser chip, a nonlinear frequency mixing is stimulated in the laser cavity, and the chaos bandwidth is expanded to 33.6 GHz, which is 4.4 times larger than the bandwidth without optical feedback. Furthermore, the effect of feedback optical power on the bandwidth is investigated. The results show that the wide power spectrum of chaotic laser is available in a large wavelength range from 1556.44 nm to 1566.42 nm. This work explores a broadband and wavelength-tunable chaotic semiconductor laser for the wavelength division multiplexing to enlarge the capacity in chaotic secure optical communications.

Abstract:Chaotic communications based on semiconductor lasers have aroused great research interest since 1990s. Physical-layer encryption using chaotic lasers is an alternative to transmit message rapidly and confidentially. There are some practical devices and setups for optical chaotic communications, which are intuitively considered to be secure. However, there is lack of a set of security evaluation rules for these communication setups. According to the recent literature, we summarize several criteria for optical chaotic communications to evaluate the security and point out some methods to enhance the security. These criteria and suggested rules are very helpful in designing secure communication systems using chaotic lasers. Finally we propose some possible hot topics on security analysis of optical chaotic communications in future.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multi-channel chaos generation scheme, which can simultaneously produce multiple chaotic signals with wideband spectrum and suppressed time-delay signature (TDS). In this scheme, we introduce an external self-phase-modulated feedback (ESPMF) to improve the optical bandwidth of the initial chaos generated by a conventional external-cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL), then optical tunable filters (OTFs) are utilized to simultaneously extract three-channel chaotic outputs. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has three main advantages. Firstly, it can simultaneously generate multiple chaotic outputs with different central wavelengths and low correlations. Secondly, the bandwidth of original ECSL-based chaos can be improved by several times, and the undesired TDS characteristics in the original chaos can be completely suppressed to an indistinguishable level (lower than 0.02). Thirdly, the bandwidths of these chaotic outputs are flexible and can be adjusted within a wide range of 20 GHz by controlling the filter bandwidths. In addition, we demonstrate an application of the proposed chaos generation scheme in random bit generation (RBG), and multi-channel high-speed random bit sequences with a total generation rate over Tbs and NIST verified randomness are simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:Maximizing the rf bandwidth associated with the chaotic output from tailored operation of nonlinear semiconductor laser systems is an ongoing research effort. The early pioneering research was done in semiconductor laser with delayed optical feedback systems, which continue to be researched. We report numerical simulations of this system, using a travelling wave model. The results provide new insights into the impact of key device parameters affecting the chaos bandwidth and spectrum. Linewidth enhancement factor and the nonlinear gain saturation parameter are found to be the most important parameters when seeking to optimize the chaotic output. We reassess a standard definition being used to report chaos bandwidth. We propose that more spectral information should be reported if numerical and experimental research results are to be of most value into the future. A database from previous experimental study is also analyzed to connect with the predictions of the numerical simulations. This elucidates the links between the chaos bandwidth achieved in real systems and the semiconductor laser parameters. The results inform recommendations for semiconductor laser parameters that will better support broadband chaos generation in whatever semiconductor-gain-medium-based nonlinear system approach is being used. They elucidate the physics of both the envelope and the fine structure of the rf spectrum of coherence collapse.
A multi-wavelength chaotic light source based on a semiconductor optical amplifier fiber ring laser

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-wavelength chaotic light source is proposed and demonstrated based on a fiber ring laser (FRL) with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the intra-cavity gain element. By properly adjusting the bias current and the polarization, the SOA-FRL generates a high-dimension chaotic optical output with 24-nm optical bandwidth. The temporal instability of the output originates from the optical feedback, as well as the nonlinear effects of both the SOA and the long fiber. With optical-to-electrical conversion, the output electrical signal presents a bandwidth of 13 GHz, which is only limited by the bandwidth of the detection system. By inserting a tunable bandpass filter (TBPF) into the cavity, the chaotic emission bandwidth is limited to 3.2 nm. The output is then divided into two parallel channels using a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM). Autocorrelation of the two outputs confirms fair randomness, while the cross-correlation result verifies the independence of the two. With multi-bit sampling and over-sampling, dual-channel true random number generation (TRNG) up to 960 Gbps per channel is achieved. Random sampling periods are adopted to reduce the influence of the time-delay signature (TDS), which originates from the round-trip delay of the laser cavity and affects the randomness of the output. At a significance level of 0.01 and a random sampling ratio of 10-4 , the generated random bits can pass all the tests provided by the NITS SP800-22 test tool.

Abstract:Chaos characterized by its irregularity and high sensitivity to initial conditions finds various applications in secure optical communications, random number generations, light detection and ranging systems, etc. Semiconductor lasers serve as ideal light platforms for chaos generations owing to the advantages in on-chip integration and complex nonlinear effects. In near-infrared wavelengths, semiconductor laser based chaotic light sources have been extensively studied and experimentally demonstrated. However, in the terahertz (THz) spectral range, due to the lack of effective THz light sources and high-speed detectors, chaos generation in THz semiconductor lasers, e.g., quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), is particularly challenging. Due to the fast intersubband carrier transitions, single mode THz QCLs resemble Class A lasers, where chaos can be hardly excited, even with external perturbations. In this work, we experimentally show a THz chaos source based on a sole multimode THz QCL without any external perturbations. Such a dynamical regime is characterized by the largest Lyapunov exponent associated to the temporal traces of the measured radio frequency (intermode beatnote) signal of the laser. The experimental results and chaos validation are confirmed by simulations of our model based on effective semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch Equations. To further understand the physical mechanism of the chaos generation in THz QCLs, a reduced model based on two coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau equations is derived from the full model cited above to systematically investigate the effects of the linewidth enhancement factor and group velocity dispersion on the chaotic regime. This model allows us to show that the chaos generation in the THz QCL can be ascribed to the system attaining the defect mediated turbulence regime.

Abstract:In this paper, a semiconductor laser with external optical feedback is entered into chaotic motion by increasing the time of the external optical feedback at first. And then, the sliding mode variable structure control scheme is used to control the chaotic motion of this laser system. The advantage of this method is that the stable output laser can be obtained in a short time and the output power strength of the laser can be adjusted flexibly in accordance with the engineering requirement. Theory analysis and simulation results show that the results of the control have powerful stability and robust .Our research results have many helpful values to improve the speed of stable output, flexible adjustment of laser output power as well as efficiency of energy transformation for real laser system.

Abstract:A new method to study the dynamic characteristics in semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback is presented.The semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback which is weak to moderate feedback is analyzed based on the visual simulation software.The results of the simulation show that for a small amount of optical feedback,the system is periodic;with the increasing of the optical feedback,the output of the system goes into chaos from its periodic state.And the chaos control via high frequency modulation is studied.Compared with the simulation technology which is based on the high-level language,using this simulation software can avoid complicated programming and can modify the parameter of the system easily.

Abstract:This paper presents a chaotic system based on novel semiconductor nanolasers (NLs), systematically analyzing its chaotic region and investigating the influence of key parameters on the unpredictability of chaotic output. This study found that under optical feedback conditions, NLs generate chaos across a wide range of feedback parameters, with the highly unpredictable region completely overlapping with the chaotic region. Further injection into the slave lasers enhances the chaotic output, expanding the range of unpredictability. Additionally, we analyzed the impact of internal parameter mismatch on the complexity of chaotic signals and found it to be similar to the scenario when parameters are matched. Using this chaotic system as an entropy source, we constructed a random number generator (RNG) and investigated the effects of internal parameters mismatch and differences in the injection parameters on the generator's performance. The simulation results show that the RNG performs well under different parameter settings, and the generated random sequences pass all random number tests successfully. Therefore, this chaotic system can yield a high-complexity chaotic light source with appropriate parameter selection, and when combined with effective post-processing, it can generate high-quality random numbers. This is crucial for advancing the realization of small-sized, high-randomness RNGs.

Abstract:Output power fluctuations in a grating external cavity diode laser with Littman configuration are described, showing peculiar chaotic behaviors of self-pulsation at the L-I curve kink points. Different spectral characteristics with multiple peaks are observed at upper and lower state of the self-pulsation. It is found also that P-N junction voltage jumps in a same pace with the pulsation. The observed phenomena reflect competition between different longitudinal modes, and transient variation of transverse modes in addition. These experimental results may contain information about the mechanisms of the chaotic instability in strong filtered feedback semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:A simple design of a hybrid integrated short-external-cavity chaotic semiconductor laser module is presented and fabricated. A distributed feedback laser chip is directed to the transflective mirror through a collimating micro-lens, and a part of the light is reflected by the mirror into the laser chip to induce chaos. Transmitted through the mirror, the generated chaotic light is coupled into a pigtail fiber as output by a focusing micro-lens. It should be pointed out that the part between the transflective mirror and the emitting surface of the chip works as a short external straight feedback cavity. All the components above together with chip submount, heat sink, and thermoelectric cooler are encapsulated by a commercial 14-pin butterfly package. In our experimental fabrication, the intensity reflectivity of the transflective mirror is optimized as 5% and the external-cavity length is 2 mm. Experimental tests show that chaotic light with a bandwidth larger than 4.5 GHz is readily obtained from the chaotic laser module by adjusting laser bias current.

Abstract:We demonstrate that a semiconductor laser perturbed by the distributed feedback from a fiber random grating can emit light chaotically without the time delay signature. A theoretical model is developed based on the Lang-Kobayashi model in order to numerically explore the chaotic dynamics of the laser diode subjected to the random distributed feedback. It is predicted that the random distributed feedback is superior to the single reflection feedback in suppressing the time-delay signature. In experiments, a massive number of feedbacks with randomly varied time delays induced by a fiber random grating introduce large numbers of external cavity modes into the semiconductor laser, leading to the high dimension of chaotic dynamics and thus the concealment of the time delay signature. The obtained time delay signature with the maximum suppression is 0.0088, which is the smallest to date.

Abstract:A novel model of a semiconductor laser with optical feedback is presented, generalizing Lang-Kobayashi equations to the case of incoherent feedback. The equations are supplemented by a stochastic variable which models random phase difference between the field inside laser cavity and the feedback field. It is shown that for weak-to-moderate feedback the transition from coherent to incoherent feedback leads to replacement of dynamical chaos by almost stationary lasing with slightly fluctuating intensity. Nevertheless, incoherent feedback can lead to chaotic oscillations, but at considerably larger feedback levels.

Abstract:Chaotic semiconductor lasers have been widely investigated for generating true random numbers with the merit of unpredictability relative to pseudorandom numbers generated by a computing process, especially for the lasers with external optical feedback. Here, we report the first spontaneous chaotic microlaser due to the interaction of nearly degenerate modes. The circular-side hexagonal microlaser is designed and demonstrated with adjusted mode intervals in the order of GHz for the fundamental and the first order transverse modes. Four modes including degenerate modes with strong mode beating will result in chaos. True random numbers at 10Gb/s is obtained from the laser output power with a high dimension of 5.46. Our finding provides a novel and easy way to create controllable and robust optical chaos for high speed random number generation, which also paves the way for the nonlinear dynamics in a solitary laser.

Abstract:The chaotic dynamics of directly modulated semiconductor lasers with delayed optoelectronic feedback is studied numerically. The effects of positive and negative delayed optoelectronic feedback in producing chaotic outputs from such lasers with nonlinear gain reduction in its optimum value range is investigated using bifurcation diagrams. The results are confirmed by calculating the Lyapunov exponents. A negative delayed optoelectronic feedback configuration is found to be more effective in inducing chaotic dynamics to such systems with nonlinear gain reduction factor in the practical value range.
