Abstract:This paper reviews the progress that has been made over the last half-century in modeling and analyzing the growth of transportation networks. An overview of studies has been provided following five main streams: network growth in transport geography; traffic flow, transportation planning, and network growth; statistical analyses of network growth; economics of network growth; and network science. In recognition of the vast advances through decades in terms of exploring underlying growth mechanisms and developing effective network growth models, the authors also point out the challenges that are faced to model the complex process of transport development.
Topological Evolution of Surface Transportation Networks

Abstract:This study explores the topological evolution of surface transportation networks, using empirical evidence and a simulation model validated on that data. Evolution is an iterative process of interaction, investment, and disinvestment. The temporal change of topological attributes for the network is also evaluated using measures of connectivity, density, heterogeneity, concentration, and connection patterns. The simulation model is validated using historical data from the Indiana interurban network. Statistical analyses suggest that the simulation model performs well in predicting the sequence of link abandonment in the interurban network as well as the temporal change of topological attributes. The simulation model is then applied on different idealized network structures. Typical connection patterns such as rings, webs, hub-and-spokes, and cul-de-sacs emerge in the networks; the spontaneous organization of network hierarchies, the temporal change of spacing between parallel links, and the rise-and-fall of places in terms of their relative importance are also observed, providing further evidence for the self-organization property of surface transportation networks.

Abstract:Fifty years of evolution of the transportation field is revisited at a macro scale using scientometric analysis of all publications in all 39 journals indexed in the category of Transportation by the Web of Science. The size of the literature is estimated to have reached 50,000 documents. At the highest level of aggregation, four major divisions of the literature are differentiated through these analyses, namely (i) network analysis and traffic flow, (ii) economics of transportation and logistics, (iii) travel behaviour, and (iv) road safety. Influential and emerging authors of each division are identified. Temporal trends in transportation research are also investigated via document co-citation analysis. This analysis identifies various major streams of transportation research while determining their approximate time of emergence and duration of activity. It documents topics that have been most trendy at any period of time during the last fifty years. Three clusters associated with the travel behaviour division (collectively embodying topics of land-use, active transportation, residential self-selection, traveller experience/satisfaction, social exclusion and transport/spatial equity), one cluster of statistical modelling of road accidents, and a cluster of network modelling linked predominantly to the notion of macroscopic fundamental diagram demonstrate characteristics of being current hot topics of the field. Three smaller clusters linked predominantly to electric mobility and autonomous/automated vehicles show characteristics of being emerging hot topics. A cluster labelled shared mobility is the youngest emerging cluster. Influential articles within each cluster of references are identified. Additional outcomes are the determination the influential outsiders of the transportation field.

Abstract:The transportation system is an interplay between infrastructure, vehicles, and policy. During the past century, the rapid expansion of the road network, blended with increasing vehicle production and mobility demands, has been stressing the system's capacity and resulting in a shocking amount of annual costs. To alleviate these costs while providing passengers with safe and efficient travel experiences, we need to better design and plan our transportation system. To start with, not only the design of our road network is topologically flawed but also our infrastructure likely facilitates inequality: roads and bridges are found to better connect affluent sectors while excluding the poor. While technological advancements such as connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and novel operation modes such as shared economy have offered new opportunities, questions remain. First, what is the relationship between the road network, community development, demographics, and mobility behaviors? Second, by leveraging the insights from studying the first question, can we better plan, coordinate, and optimize vehicles in different modalities such as human-driven and autonomous to construct safe, efficient, and resilient traffic flows? Third, how can we build an intelligent transportation system to promote equity and fairness in our community development? This proposal is the first step toward answering these questions.
Evolving accessibility landscapes: mutations of transportation networks in China

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed an exceptional extension of public transportation networks in People's Republic of China, both at a national scale with the construction of the first HSR railway network of the world, and at local scales with numerous cities developing high coverage subway networks often from scratch. This chapter studies these mutations, both from a quantitative perspective with the study of the evolution of population accessibility landscapes, at a national level and for several cities, and from a qualitative perspective with fieldwork observations. We confirm that rebalancing planning objectives are well achieved in terms of accessibility at both scales, when all planned lines will be achieved but already in a significant manner. We finally hypothesize possible paths for the coupled network-territory systems, given the extent without precedent of such mutations.

Abstract: The story of every urban transportation system has been a product of the geography and demographics of its surrounding region, while the development of those transportation systems have in turn transformed the cities and communities they serve. In the 1960s, geographers recognized the marked role of land use-transportation interactions in the formation and differentiation of places and transportation networks (Haggett and Chorley, 1969; Lowe and Moryadas, 1975). Since the 1980s, integrated land use-transportation modeling has gained momentum and seen widespread application in urban planning and design.

Abstract:Transport infrastructure evolves over time in a complex process as part of a dynamic and open system including travel demand, land use, as well as economic and political initiatives. As transport infrastructure changes, each traveler may adopt a new schedule, frequency, destination, mode, and/or route, and in the long term may change the location of their activities. These new behaviors create demand for a new round of modifications of infrastructure. In the long run, we observe the collective change in the capacity, service, connectivity, and connection patterns (topology) of networks. This paper examines how a fixed set of places incrementally gets connected as transport networks are constructed and upgraded over time. A simulator of network incremental connection (SONIC) is constructed to model the process of incremental connections and examines how networks evolve differently under centralized versus decentralized jurisdictional initiatives. Exploring the mechanism underlying this dynamic process can answer questions such as how urban networks have developed into various topologies, which network patterns are more efficient, and whether and how transport engineers, planners, and decision makers can guide the dynamics of land uses and infrastructure in a desired direction.

Abstract: As American cities evolved in the first half of the 20th century, we saw a concentration of activities and development at the centers of cities. Since freeways were constructed from the 1960s, roads also became more differentiated with regard to their design speeds and capacities (certainly in the pre-auto era most unpaved streets were equally slow, with paved streets and highways and then freeways, some roads got much faster and carry more traffic). Faster roads have enabled decentralization of activities, and consequently led to a flattening of the density gradient of land use as centers of cities became relatively less important. In response to this trend, the representation of urban spatial structure in urban economics has migrated from the mono-centric models to the poly-centric models (Mori, 2006).

Abstract:Many countries in the world have started to pursue for low-carbon transportation. Built environment interventions and transportation programs have become prevailing strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As one of the seminal series on “Advances in Transport Policy and Planning,” this book synthesizes the knowledge of land use and transport planning and their integration worldwide. We grouped the chapters in this book into three parts. Part I focuses on the impacts of land use and transportation programs on travel behavior. Part II elaborates on the movements of planning effort for urbanity and associated implications for transportation. Part III highlights research and practices pertinent to integrated transport and land use planning, particularly transit-oriented development. These chapters will help guide the development of research and practices in this field for years to come.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, the topology of complex network is used to characterize the interactions among travelers. Based on the assumption of travelers' limited rationality and the wisdom of crowds, an evolutionary game model of travelers was established. Combining these research findings, we study commuters' travel behavior rules during peak traffic periods and make some recommendations that have the potential to relieve traffic congestion. In the first section, we analyze the effect of heterogeneity on travel choice behavior by Monte Carlo simulations, which explains why the total amount of traffic during peak hours is hard to decrease. The experimental results indicate that increasing fees would not reduce traffic flow during peak hours. Moreover, controlling price for the management of travel demand needs to be coordinated with the management of traffic system under the condition of limited road resources. On this foundation, the second section proposes an environmental travel mode for the transfer between cycle highways and rail transit. We verify the effectiveness of this travel mode in alleviating traffic congestion. Furthermore, considering the interactions between different travel modes in transportation system, we suggest some management recommendations with reference to the characteristics of different travel modes.</p>

By enabling or restricting the movement of people and goods, the presence or absence of transport services and infrastructure has historically been determining for cultures to connect, for knowledge to be shared, and for societies to evolve and prosper, or, in contrast, for societies to decay and fail. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, transport has been going through a revolution worldwide. One of the primary goals for the transport sector is clear: it needs to be decarbonized and become more sustainable. At the same time, technological advances are shaping the transport sector toward smart services and societies. The Special Collection showcases some of the latest advances in research towards sustainable and technology-enabled transport.

The weakest link: The decline of the surface transportation network

Abstract:This study explores the economic mechanisms behind the decline of a surface transportation network, based on the assumption that the decline phase is a spontaneous process driven by decentralized decisions of individual travelers and privatized links. A simulation model is developed with a degeneration process by which the weakest link is removed iteratively from the network. Experiments reveal how the economic efficiency of a network evolves during the degeneration process and suggest an “optimal” degenerated network could be derived during the decline phase in terms of maximizing total social welfare.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the current research status of three fields,i.e.,traffic flow chaos,self-organization of transportation system,and network complexity.Four difficulties were summed up:(i) the lack of theoretical basis for systemic depiction and integrated depiction procedures;(ii) the need of large amount of data;(iii) the incomparable measure by the current complexity depiction methods;(iv) the cognition about the complexity of transportation system still sticks in the shallow stage,and how to manage and control the system according to its complexity characteristics is still blank.Final-ly,the further research directions are proposed.
The Co-evolution of Land Use and Road Networks

Abstract:This paper explores the co-evolution of land use and transportation, which is a poorly understood field despite progress in studying each separately. Our study models the co-evolution of land use and transportation network as a bottom-up process by which re-location of activities and expansion of roads are driven by interdependent decisions of individual businesses, workers, and road owners according to simple decision rules. The model was kept simple to best illustrate collective spatial patterns of land use distribution without conflating factors. The sensitivity of these patterns is also discussed. A Simulator of Integrated Growth of Networks And Land-use (SIGNAL) is developed to implement these decentralized decision making processes, in which the Gini index and equivalent radius were computed to describe and track down the spatial patterns of space and network. Simulation experiments were conducted to explore the evolution of land use patterns in the context of the coevolution of land use and road networks. Experimental results demonstrate that initially flat land uses become more concentrated while initially concentrated land uses become less so, and they tend to converge on the same hierarchical distribution, suggesting that a stable hierarchical distribution of land use may emerge from different initial conditions. Experiments also reveal that the concentration of land use is reinforced by the differentiation of roads.

Abstract:Transportation infrastructure has an enormous impact on sustainable development. To identify multiple impacts of transportation infrastructure and show emerging trends and challenges, this paper presents a scientometric review based on 2543 published articles from 2000 to 2017 through co-author, co-occurring and co-citation analysis. In addition, the hierarchy of key concepts was analyzed to show emerging research objects, methods and levels according to the clustering information, which includes title, keyword and abstract. The results expressed by visual graphs compared high-impact authors, collaborative relationships among institutions in developed and developing countries. In addition, representative research issues related to the economy, society and environment were identified such as cost overrun, spatial economy, prioritizing structure, local development and land value. Additionally, two future directions, integrated research of various effects and structure analysis of transportation network, are recommended. The findings of this study provide researchers and practitioners with an in-depth understanding of transportation infrastructure's impacts on sustainable development by visual expression.

Abstract:The United Nations predicts that half the world's population will live in cities by 2008. Thus, rapid urban sprawl, and especially its traffic congestion, is a global problem. Meeting mobility needs of urban dwellers is critical to sustaining growth and social stability, but many major cities struggle to do so. The evolving situation in Beijing, is examined, and the policy-making process in Beijing is analyzed to understand why transportation problems occur and are intractable and how they can be solved. A structure of policy making is proposed that includes four factors: institutional, travel behavior, ideals, and landmark events. The analysis includes a case study and comparison of transit service in Beijing and other cities, including results from the latest transit level-of-service rider survey in Beijing. It is concluded that an imbalance between transportation supply and demand is the primary cause of traffic congestion. The transportation problem must be solved from two sides: increasing supply and managing demand simultaneously. Public transit, paired with transportation demand management, is an effective approach for sustainable transportation but requires a range of policies.

Abstract:The urban passenger transport system plays a key role in providing services for passengers to complete their travel. By combining complex network theory to model urban passenger transport system evolution, we analyze the relationship among various agents of the urban passenger transport system, which is a network model consisting of managers, companies, passengers, and the interactions between different agents. The structural and dynamic property of the urban passenger transport system is described. Three node categories are used to represent the dynamical units in the three-level network structured to capture the properties of urban public transport system. Through analyzing the network's nodes and structural edges, the network dynamic evolution model can be established. The Harbin taxi market evolution was studied as an example to simulate and validate a proposed model, which reflects the objective laws of the urban passenger transport system and provides a new way to investigate the urban passenger transport system.

Abstract:Urban space exhibits rich and diverse organizational structures, which is difficult to characterize and interpret. Modelling urban spatial structures in the context of mobility and revealing their underlying patterns in dynamic networks are key to understanding urban spatial structures and how urban systems work. Most existing methods overlook its temporal dimension and oversimplify its spatial heterogeneity, and it is challenging to address these complex properties using one single method. Therefore, we propose a framework based on temporal networks for modeling dynamic urban mobility structures. First, we cast aggregated traffic flows into a compact and informative temporal network for structure representation. Then, we explore spatial cluster substructures and temporal evolution patterns to acquire evolution regularities. Last, the capability of the proposed framework is examined by an empirical analysis based on taxi mobility networks. The experiment results enable to quantitatively depict urban space dynamics and effectively detect spatiotemporal heterogeneity in mobility networks.
