Abstract:An optical signal consisting of a 10 Gbit/s Manchester-encoded intensity-modulated (IM) payload and a 156 Mbit/s frequency-shift-keying (FSK) label was generated, and its performance was evaluated in an 80 km standard singlemode-fibre link. It is shown that the FSK/IM labelling performance is greatly improved through high-speed Manchester coding.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:Development of Data Center based computing technology require energy efficient high-speed transmission links. This leads to optical amplification-free intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems with low complexity equalization compliant with IEEE standardized electrical interfaces. Switching from on-off keying to multi-level pulse amplitude modulation would allow to reduce lane count for next generation Ethernet interfaces. We characterize 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying, 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links using two integrated transmitters: O-band directly modulated laser and C-band externally modulated laser. Simple feed forward or decision feedback equalizer is used. We demonstrate 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying links operating without forward error correction for both transmitters. We also show 106.25 Gbaud 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3). Furthermore, for EML-based transmitter we achieve 106.25 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation performance below KP-FEC threshold of 2.2 x 10(-4). That shows that we can use optics to support (2x)100 Gbps Ethernet on single lambda at expense of simple forward error correction.

Abstract:We present experimental results on using optical transmission technologies such as I&Q modulators, digital coherent receivers, heterodyne up-conversion in fast photodiodes, to generate, transmit and detect high capacity wireless transmission. Both OFDM and QAM modulation formats are tested in the W-achieving capacities up to 100-Gbps with seamless optical fiber-wireless conversion.

Abstract:A novel scheme for high speed optical differential Manchester code generation is proposed and theoretically demonstrated using the structure of two nested Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). A 40Gb/s differential Manchester code is generated. The obtained signal quality performances show that, the proposed scheme experiences very low power penalty.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a simple chirp-free optical Manchester signal transmitter that consists of a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator and a passive electronic power combiner. A 5-Gb/s optical Manchester signal is generated and its dispersion tolerance enhancement is investigated. The bandwidth of the modulator and driving circuit is reduced by half.

In this paper, a novel phase shifted Manchester (PS-Manchester) coding based on PAM-8 is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to mitigate these noise and distortions. With the aid of PS-Manchester coding and WDM, a total data rate of 3.375-Gb/s can be successfully achieved in the RGB-LED based VLC system. The BER is under 7% HD-FEC limit of 3.8x10(-3) after 1-m indoor free space transmission. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate ever achieved in PAM VLC systems. Abstract:SCM optical label swapping for high-speed payload has been a hot issue, since it was addressed as one of the most proposed technologies for building an optical switching network. In this work, a novel in-band SCM scheme of the optical label swapper with imposing Manchester encoding on the payload is proposed, in which interference between payload and label is small even though the SCM label is inserted at a low frequency. Simulations for packets composed of 100Gb/s QPSK payload and ASK SCM label over 80 km standard single-mode fiber are conducted and how performances of payload and label vary with different couple factor, label speed or SCM frequency are analyzed. Compared to in-band SCM label inserted by cascade modulation, performance of payload in the new architecture is almost independent of modulation index, and the receiver sensitivity of the payload is improved by nearly 10 dBm with only dispersion compensation.

Abstract:Based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and optical temporal time delay (OTDL), we propose and demonstrate experimentally an all-optical 40-Gb/s RZ-DPSK to ASK-Manchester format conversion. This obtained ASK-Manchester signals have the phase changes due to the demodulation of RZ-DPSK, which is called as phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal. Compared with pure Manchester signal, the simulated results show that the phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal has a compact optical spectrum and lower power at the low radio frequency (RF) frequencies, which presents high tolerance on chromatic dispersion and little the cross-talk between payload and label. Moreover, the efficiency and the BER performance of conversion and the dynamic range of fiber input power, transmission length, and chromatic dispersion tolerance of the converted ASK-Manchester are detailed discussed. Less than 1-dB power penalty over 50-km SMF transmission is observed.

Abstract:Novel phase-shift-keying (PSK)-Manchester coding scheme is suggested for the first time to be used in a 10-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (PON) system. PSK-Manchester signal demonstrates much stronger tolerance to beat interference noise compared to that of differential phase-shift-keying and amplitude-shift-keying-Manchester signals. With this modulation format applied, the number of semiconductor optical amplifiers used as control gates in a PON system can be greatly reduced, which make the PON system more cost-effective.

Abstract:An ultrafast microring modulator (MRM) is fabricated and presented with V π · L of 0.825 V · cm . A 240 Gb/s PAM-8 signal transmission over 2 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is experimentally demonstrated. PN junction doping concentration is optimized, and the overall performance of the MRM is improved. Optical peaking is introduced to further extend the EO bandwidth from 52 to 110 GHz by detuning the input wavelength. A titanium nitride heater with 0.1 nm/mW tuning efficiency is implemented above the MRM to adjust the resonant wavelength. High bit rate modulations based on the high-performance and compact MRM are carried out. By adopting off-line signal processing in the transmitter and receiver side, 120 Gb/s NRZ, 220 Gb/s PAM-4, and 240 Gb/s PAM-8 are measured with the back-to-back bit error ratio (BER) of 5.5 × 10 − 4 , 1.5 × 10 − 2 , and 1.4 × 10 − 2 , respectively. A BER with different received optical power and 2 km SSMF transmission is also investigated. The BER for 220 Gb/s PAM-4 and 240 Gb/s PAM-8 after 2 km SSMF transmission is calculated to be 1.7 × 10 − 2 and 1.5 × 10 − 2 , which meet with the threshold of soft-decision forward-error correction, respectively.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.

Abstract:>A 100-Gb/s high-speed optical transmitter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.Based on frequency-quadrupling technique,two sub-channels with a fixed 50-GHz spacing are obtained from one laser source.Using return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) modulation format and polarization multiplexing (PolMux),only low-speed electronic devices of 12.5 GHz are needed for the 100-Gb/s transmitter.This eliminates the need of ultrahigh-speed optoelectronic devices and thus greatly reduces the cost.The experimental results show that this transmitter can achieve good perfor- mance in dispersion tolerance of a 25-km single mode fiber (SMF).

Abstract:We present the characterization of a silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator with electrical packaging and show that it exhibits a large third-order intermodulation spurious-free dynamic range (> 100 dB Hz2/3). This characteristic renders the modulator particularly suitable for the generation of high spectral efficiency discrete multi-tone signals and we experimentally demonstrate a single-channel, direct detection transmission system operating at 49.6 Gb/s, exhibiting a baseband spectral efficiency of 5 b/s/Hz. Successful transmission is demonstrated over various lengths of single mode fibre up to 40 km, without the need of any amplification or dispersion compensation.
