Abstract:Recycling is the current development direction for the treatment of sulfuric acid wastewater, before which the concentration of chloride (Cl(−I)) impurity below 50 mg/L is necessary. In this study, a clean, cheap and effective advanced oxidation approach for the removal of Cl(−I) by the photoactivated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) was proposed. The removal efficiency of Cl(−I) by PMS or PS under UV (ultraviolet) or sunlight was successively determined, and the mechanism for the removal of Cl(−I) was explored. For PMS, the contribution ratio of the direct oxidation by PMS, the indirect oxidation by hydroxyl (·OH) radical and the indirect oxidation by sulfate (·SO4−) radical was respectively 13.3%, 14.9% and 71.8% under UV. For PS, the contribution ratio of ·OH and ·SO4− radicals under UV was respectively 28.3% and 71.7%. Under the suitable conditions, both PMS and PS showed excellent performance for the removal of Cl(−I) with a residual concentration of Cl(−I) below 50 mg/L. Thanks to the higher stability in the air, the lower dosage under sunlight, the shorter reaction time and the lower power consumption, PMS exhibited more advantages in the aspects of storage convenience, electricity and reagent cost, and application possibilities under sunlight.
