Abstract:Fourier domain mode-locked lasers are excellent wavelength-swept sources for high-speed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) demodulation. When the lasers are applied for remote FBG sensing, the transmission delay could make the sensing signal deviating significantly from its real position due to the short sweep period of the lasers, which can cause large wavelength demodulation error. An autocalibration method for compensating the delay is proposed by inserting a Fabry-Perot etalon with a wavelength marker into the reference optical path. Besides, the wavelength sweeping nonlinearity can be real-time monitored via the multiple combs of the Fabry-Perot etalon and absolute wavelength of FBG can be derived using interpolation algorithm. Experimental results show that this demodulation method is efficient and accurate.

Abstract:A high speed quasi-distributed demodulation method based on the microwave photonics and the chromatic dispersion effect is designed and implemented for weak fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Due to the effect of dispersion compensation fiber (DCF), FBG wavelength shift leads to the change of the difference frequency signal at the mixer. With the way of crossing microwave sweep cycle, all wavelengths of cascade FBGs can be high speed obtained by measuring the frequencies change. Moreover, through the introduction of Chirp-Z and Hanning window algorithm, the analysis of difference frequency signal is achieved very well. By adopting the single-peak filter as a reference, the length disturbance of DCF caused by temperature can be also eliminated. Therefore, the accuracy of this novel method is greatly improved, and high speed demodulation of FBGs can easily realize. The feasibility and performance are experimentally demonstrated using 105 FBGs with 0.1% reflectivity, 1 m spatial interval. Results show that each grating can be distinguished well, and the demodulation rate is as high as 40 kHz, the accuracy is about 8 pm.

Abstract:A fast and wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) utilizing the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique, integrated with 24 DFB lasers, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Additionally, a high-speed FBG sensing system using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is proposed and demonstrated, achieving stable high-speed sweeping with a wavelength coverage of 50.4 nm and a sweeping frequency of up to 5.85 kHz without mode hopping. The FBG sensing system has a solid-state design without moving parts, enabling real-time, high-speed, and stable monitoring of temperature, pressure, strain, and displacement. Furthermore, the system is cost-effective and anticipated to have diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system based on a spectrum-limited Fourier domain mode-locking (SL-FDML) fiber laser is proposed. Multiple FBGs cascaded in a long fiber are utilized as both the sensors in the system and the wavelength-selected components in the SL-FDML fiber laser. Both wavelength-division multiplexing and spatial-division multiplexing techniques are demonstrated for interrogation of multiple FBGs by mapping the wavelength measurement to the time measurement and by adjusting the driving frequency of the SL-FDML fiber laser. The proposed FBG sensing system, employing techniques of the wavelength- and spatial-domain interrogation of multiple FBGs, can be used in remote and quasi-distributed multipoint sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel and compact FBG interrogation system for multiplexed static strain sensing with a free running mode-locked fiber laser. Multiplexed FBG array in cascading are interrogated by coherent dual-comb pulses generated from a single fiber laser. Dual-comb spectroscopy is achieved with the fiber laser to precisely detect the strain-induced spectral shifts of the FBG sensors. Multi-point strain measurements are performed to characterize the proposed system, where a large dynamic range of 520 mu epsilon with 0.5 mu epsilon resolution is achieved. Abstract:We present a four-channel ultrafast wavelength-swept distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser array based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique using instantaneous injection current modulation. With the aid of our designed laser driving circuit system consists of the microcontroller unit (MCU), field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and negative metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (n-MOSFETs), the precise pulse driving current for the 4-channel wavelength-swept REC-DFB laser array can be generated and a fast tuning of 16.424 nm within 10 μs is achieved. To further investigate the tuning performance of the proposed wavelength-swept laser source, we then applied it to the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation system and four FBG temperature sensor arrays were successfully demodulated. The development of high-efficient optical sensing systems heavily relies on the significance of the ultrafast wavelength-swept laser source, which has the potential to greatly enhance FBG interrogator performance in the future.

Abstract:A dynamic interferometer based on the fiber-Bragg -grating laser diode (FBG-LD) is proposed in this paper. The theoretical model of the FBG-LD base on the mode-structure model of the external cavity lasers is established, illustrating that the mode hopping probability lowers with the decreased reflectivity of the chip AR end. The random wavelength hopping of 10-2 pm level of the FBG-LD is observed, hardly influencing the dynamic interferometry, which is proven theoretically and experimentally. A Twyman-Green dynamic interferometer with the FBG-LD is constructed for the wavefront measurement of the triple-reflection system. According to the experimental results, it is clear that the interferogram contrast with FBG-LD is improved significantly in the extremely low reflectivity of 0.043.

Abstract:A wavelength scanning system with ultrahigh-resolution is proposed and demonstrated for displacement sensing. Light from a linewidth-narrowed and frequency-stabilized laser is put into an electro-optic modulator (EOM) which is connected to a microwave source (MS), and the frequency of the radio frequency (RF) signal output from the MS is set to scan from 2.3 GHz to 6.5 GHz with a high resolution covering the free spectrum range (FSR) of a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot interferometer (FBG-FPI), thus the laser output from EOM scans with the same resolution to RF signal within certain wavelength range. The laser is injected into the FBG-FPI yielding extremely narrow transmission peaks within the FBG reflection wavelength range. Experimental results show that the longitudinal modes caused in the FPI cavity which is invisible to normal commercial optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) can be measured accurately and displacement measuring with nanometer resolution can be expected by using this system.

Novel high-speed low-chirp q-modulated semiconductor distributed feedback laser

Abstract:A novel Q-modulated semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) laser is proposed and analyzed. The laser consists of a gain section with a distributed feedback grating, a phase section, and a Q-modulator at the back end. The Q-modulator is placed in an anti-resonant Fabry-Perot cavity acting as a rear reflector of the laser. Its reflectivity can be changed by varying the waveguide absorption of the modulator. The change of the reflectivity of the rear reflector results in a change in the Q-factor, the lasing threshold and consequently the output power of the laser. The monolithically integrated Q-modulated DFB laser has advantages of high speed, high extinction ratio and low wavelength chirp.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain interrogator based on a scattering medium to generate stable and deterministic speckle patterns, calibrated with applied strain, which are highly dependent on the FBG back-reflection spectral components. The strong wavelength-dependency of speckle patterns was previously used for high resolution wavemeters where scattering effectively folds the optical path, but instability makes practical realization of such devices difficult. Here, a new approach is demonstrated by utilizing femtosecond laser-written scatterers inside flat optical fiber, to enhance mechanical stability. By inscribing 15 planes of pseudo-randomized nanovoids (714 [Formula: see text] 500 voids per plane) as a 3D array in a 1 [Formula: see text] 0.7 [Formula: see text] 0.16 mm volume, the intrinsic stability and compactness of the device was improved. Operating as a wavemeter, it remained stable for at least 60 h with 45 pm resolution over the wavelength range of 1040-1056 nm. As a reflection mode FBG interrogator, after calibrating speckle patterns by applying tensile strain to the FBG, the device is capable of detecting microstrain changes in the range of 0-200 [Formula: see text] with a standard error of 4 [Formula: see text], limited by the translation stage step size. All these characteristics make it an interesting technology for filling the niche of low-cost, high-resolution wavemeters and interrogators which offer the best available trade-off between resolution, compactness, price and stability.

Abstract:Point by point (PbP) method via femtosecond (fs) laser is considered as a highly flexible way for inscribing FBGs, which is demonstrated in different core with various central wavelengths previously. In this letter, the flexible inscription has been further expanded to regulate reflectivity, 3 dB bandwidth, and sidelobe suppression. The influence law has been discovered for the first time that there is a trade-off among the laser energy, the transverse offsets and the grating order for pursuing smaller 3 dB bandwidth and higher sidelobe suppression on high reflectivity FBGs. The results show that increasing the grating order is a more efficient way. Quasi distributed FBGs are inscribed on a continuous fiber for further confirming its flexibility.

Abstract:A high-speed spectrum demodulation method with a large dynamic range for fiber-optic Fabry–Perot sensor is presented. The demodulation system only consists of a near-infrared distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, a fiber circulator, a photodetector and a signal processing circuit. By quickly cyclically setting the grating current and phase current of the DBR laser, the laser wavelength is scanned with a repetition frequency of 2 kHz. The signal processing circuit controls the current of the laser and performs spectrum demodulation simultaneously. Spectral demodulation mainly includes normalization of interference spectrum, fast Fourier transform, phase estimation and cavity length calculation. The displacement stage and piezoelectric ceramics were used to remove the static cavity length and dynamic cavity length of the Fabry–Perot cavity. Experimental results show that the demodulation resolution reaches 0.15 nm. Benefiting from the high spectral detection resolution, a large demodulation range is achieved to be 0.3–13 mm. Compared with the demodulation systems based on spectrum modules, this solution significantly reduces the cost, simplifies the algorithm and improves the dynamic range.

The wavelength shift measurement of the FBG sensor is converted to time-domain measurement. The high-speed potential of this scheme was investigated experimentally, demonstrating an effective sampling speed of 2.44 megasamples per second.

Abstract:Based on the radio frequency (RF) demodulation technique, a novel dual-wavelength fiber laser sensor is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A beat sensing signal, which is generated by the coherently mixing output of a dual-wavelength laser in a high frequency photodetector, has been obtained and demodulated by a radio-frequency spectrum analyzer (RFSA). By employing a LiNbO(3) modulator, high-frequency beat signal can be tuned arbitrarily to tens or hundreds of megahertz without distortion and thus a low-frequency RFSA can be used. When a strain is applied on the laser sensor, the detected beat signals will be shifted with a strain sensitivity of about -8.11 kHz/mu epsilon.

Abstract:A high-energy nanosecond-pulsed ultraviolet (UV) laser Talbot interferometer for high-efficiency, mass production of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array was experimentally demonstrated. High-quality FBG arrays were successfully inscribed in both H2-free and H2-loaded standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) with high inscription efficiency and excellent reproducibility. Compared with the femtosecond pulse that had a coherent length of several tens of micrometers, a longer coherent length (~10 mm) of the employed laser rendered a wider FBG wavelength versatility over 700 nm band (1200–1900 nm) without the need for optical path difference (OPD) compensation. Dense FBG array with center wavelength separation of ~0.4 nm was achieved and more than 1750 FBGs with separated center wavelength could be inscribed in a single H2-free or H2-loaded SMF in theory, which is promising for mass production of FBG arrays in industry. Moreover, precise focusing of laser beam was superfluous for the proposed system due to the high energy density of pulse. The proposed FBG inscription system was promising for industrialization production of dense FBG arrays.

Abstract:This paper presents a fast demodulation algorithm to determine fiber Bragg grating (FBG) from spectra acquired by low wavelength resolution spectrometers. A modified and improved Buneman frequency estimation algorithm is employed in tracking FBG wavelength and eliminating FBG wavelength discontinuities in real-time wavelength demodulation calculations. The FBG demodulation algorithm was tested using a 512-element detector array spectrometer with a 156 pmelement resolution. At a 2-kHz spectrum acquisition rate, the demodulation algorithm achieved a 0.048 pm Bragg wavelength resolution. The computational efficiency and robustness of the new algorithm was compared with a Gaussian FBG peak fitting method. Our method provides a real-time demodulation scheme to track FBG wavelength using low-resolution spectrometers or tunable lasers. It has the potential to significantly reduce the cost of FBG interrogation systems that are employed in high-sensitivity and high-speed sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel method is proposed that simultaneously eliminates chirp and compresses pulses from gain-switched distributed-feedback Bragg (G-S DFB) semiconductor laser employing chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with narrow bandwidth. It is demonstrated that with this method, only the central frequency of the FBG is slightly shifted from the central frequency of the G-S DFB laser; the nearly transform-limited narrow pulse with symmetrical waveform can be obtained.

Abstract:FBG is a reflective structure present in the fiber with periodically perturbed effective refractive index. With the emergence of femtosecond lasers, the point-by-point method has been proven to have high flexibility in inscribing FBGs. However, specialized literature reviews are currently unavailable in the areas of inscribing FBGs by point-by-point method via femtosecond lasers, preventing researchers from accessing a comprehensive understanding. Herein, point-by-point technology via femtosecond lasers and recent progress for inscribing FBGs are reviewed. Its high flexibility characteristics have been summarized in detail, including in different types of optical fiber, FBG location and special spectra. The current development of equipment related to the high flexibility characteristic has also been proposed simultaneously, along with the challenges and perspectives on the FBG inscription by point-by-point method. Integrating the insights of this review with in-depth theoretical and experimental research, the fabricated FBG is expected to have a significant impact on industrial applications in extreme environment sensing, advanced fiber laser, artificial intelligence and robotics, biomedicine detection, and so on.
