Abstract:A linearization scheme based on two cascaded intensity modulators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the biases, the power ratio and the phase difference between the drive signals applied to the two Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) can be effectively eliminated over a wide operating bandwidth of 1 to 12 GHz without the same RF phase at two modulators, which is required in previous works. The ratio of the fundamental output to the IMD3 reaches 50.21 to 63.28 dB, which has an improvement of 18.35 to 31.42 dB compared to that of a single MZM link. Abstract:A general analytical method by adjusting the phases of the signals applied to the four electrodes of a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) is proposed to suppress the third-order intermodulation (IMD3) in microwave photonic link. Through the detailed theoretical and numerical analysis, all the signal combinations for the four electrodes of the DPMZM are found and classified into three groups according to the IMD3 cancellation mechanism. In this process, a new group of the four electrodes’ setting to suppress the IMD3 is found. The simulation and experiment are carried out to verify our discovery. It is found that this newly found group can also suppress IMD3 by about 30 dB and improve the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) by 11.5 dB⋅Hz2∕3.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.

Abstract:A novel linearized photonic downconversion technique based on balanced detection and digital signal post-processing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The overall system performance benefits from carrier suppression operation and balanced detection. The dynamic ranges of both the X- and K-band links are also investigated. After compensated in the digital domain, the downconverted IMD3 components are significantly suppressed by more than 21 dB, corresponding to about 10 dB and 7.4 dB improvement in SFDR for the X- and K-band analog microwave photonic link, respectively.

Abstract:Spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) limited by intermodulation distortions is a usually accepted measure for dynamic performance of a photonic time-stretched analog-to-digital converter (ADC). In this paper, SFDR improvement in a photonic time-stretched ADC based on third-order predistortion is proposed. The third-order predistortion is achieved optically within an integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). The mechanism of SFDR improvement with third-order predistortion in the DPMZM is theoretically analyzed. Compared with a conventional scheme without predistortion, the experimental results show that the SFDR improvement of similar to 26 dB in the proposed scheme is proved. (C) 2014 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:The dual-hop free-space optical (FSO) communication link for polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an atmospheric chamber with the optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensating the turbulence-induced signal distortions. The phase fluctuations can be effectively reduced by the OPC, as the error vector magnitudes are 10.03% and 8.28% decreased for x- and y-polarization. At the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the power penalty of the dual-hop link with OPC is 2.85 or 2.34 dB lower than that of each polarization without OPC.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a novel and simple photonic vector signal generation scheme at radio frequency bands enabled by a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator-based optical carrier suppression without precoding techniques and optical filter, which can reduce the complexity of transmitter digital signal processing. The generation and reception of 16/20/22-Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying vector signals at 16/20/22 GHz are experimentally demonstrated, respectively. The measured bit-error ratio for 16 G-baud QPSK vector signals after transmitting over 10-km standard single mode fiber can be under 7% hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Moreover, compared to the conventional precoding scheme, the receiver sensitivity can be enhanced by 4 dB at both back-to-back and after 10-km SSMF transmission cases, which demonstrates the feasibility of this proposal, and show its potential promising application in radio over fiber system.

A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9 QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization without post filter are proposed and experimental y demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM-like signal. With this technique, SE can be increased to 4 bits/s/Hz for QPSK signals. Abstract:We investigate electrical dispersion compensation for 40-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying modulation signals utilizing multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) decision-feed back equalizers (DFEs). In our scheme, all branch signals after balanced-photodiode detection or single-photodiode detection are analogous to antennae in a MIMO wireless transmission systems. Chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion tolerances for various MIMO DFE configurations are compared. The flexible scheme can be easily extended to m-ary PSK modulation formats.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simplified coherent receiver based on heterodyne detection with only two balanced photodetectors and two analog-to-digital converters. The polarization diversity hybrid can be simplified relative to the conventional one. The detected intermediate frequency signals are first downconverted to baseband with inphase and quadrature separation. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrated the eight-channel 50 Gb/s polarization division multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying WDM signal with heterodyne detection based on digital signal processing over 1040 km single-mode fiber 28 with erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification.

Abstract:In this paper, polarization-insensitive wavelength conversion based on orthogonal-pumps and four-wave mixing in HNLF is experimentally demonstrated for high-speed 112-Gb/s PolMux-RZ-QPSK transmission with digital coherent detection. The conversion performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for both single- and four-channel input signals, with the achieved post-conversion OSNR for the two cases shown to be 30 and 20 dB, respectively. Moreover, it is shown that the OSNR of the converted single-channel signal can be maintained above 25 dB even if the wavelength spacing between the original and converted signals is larger than 25 nm. Finally, the BER of 4x112-Gb/s PolMux-RZQPSK converted signals after 1 km HNLF transmission is measured to be below 1x10(-4). The optimum OSNR and launched HNLF power are also investigated.
