Abstract:Recent experimental advances have made it possible to conduct nonlinear optical measurements on complex systems with femtosecond time resolution.[1]. In the pump-probe technique[2–5], a femtosecond pulse (called the pump) is used to excite the molecule for the ground state lg>to an excited electronic state le>. After a delay time τ, the molecule is subjected to a second femtosecond pulse (called the probe), which raises the molecule to the electronic state lf>. The absorption spectrum of the probe pulse gives information on dynamical processes in the system (intramolecular vibrational motion, solvent motion, rotation, etc.).
