Abstract:Sb2Se3 is a promising candidate for environment-friendly and cost-efficiently thin film photovoltaics thanks to its material advantages and superior optoelectronic properties. However, it has intrinsically low electrical conductivity, which leads to unsatisfactory device performance and limited scope of applications. Herein, we demonstrated an effective strategy of electrical conductivity-induced Sb2Se3-based photovoltaic performance improvement. Three Sb2Se3-based targets with chemical composition of Sb2Se3, Sb2Se3.3 and Sb-2(Se0.9I0.1)(3) have been firstly prepared by using high-temperature melting technique. Then the high-quality thin films can be obtained through an effective Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering process. A novel Sb2Se3 quasi-homojunction thin film solar cell was fabricated for the first time and the highest power conversion efficiency reaches already a highly interesting 2.65%. The combined features of unique quasi-homojunction device structure and advantageous full-vacuum preparation process further demonstrated its attractive potential for thin film photovoltaic applications.
Pbse Nanocrystal Solar Cells Using Bandgap Engineering

Abstract:Benefiting from the strong quantum confinement, PbSe nanocrystals allow their bandgap and absorption edge to be tuned to optimize the absorption of the solar radiation. Here, bandgap engineering-based photovoltaic devices were designed, fabricated, and characterized using two-size PbSe nanocrystals. The fabricated two size particle photovoltaic devices showed 12.8% higher power conversion efficiency compared to that of the single-particle devices, as a result of the enhanced photon absorption and the improved charge transfer.

Abstract:With good electrical conductivity, optical transparency, and mechanical compliance, graphene films have shown great potential in application for photovoltaic devices as electrodes. However, photovoltaic devices employing graphene anodes usually suffer from poor hole collection efficiency because of the mismatch of energy levels between the anode and light-harvesting layers. Here, a simple solution treatment and a low-cost solution-processed molybdenum oxide (MoOx) film were used to modify the work function of graphene and the interfacial morphology, respectively, yielding highly efficient hole transfer. As a result, the graphene/MoOx anodes demonstrated low surface roughness and high electrical conductivity. Using the graphene/MoOx anodes in PbSe nanocrystal solar cells, we achieved 1 sun power conversion efficiency of 3.56%. Compared to the control devices with indium tin oxide anodes, the graphene/MoOx-based devices show excellent performance, demonstrating the great potential of the graphene/MoOx anodes for use in optoelectronics.

Abstract:Tin based perovskites have drawn much attention for narrow bandgap and eco-friendliness. In our previous work, high quality Sn-Pb perovskite films with vertically aligned large grains and high crystallinity were achieved on a hydrophobic hole transport layer by a two-step processing method. However, it remains a challenge to achieve thick films which are required to enhance light absorption especially in near-infrared region, and thus the performance is limited by the low short-circuit current due to the thin films. Here, a 2D/3D structure was applied to obtain high quality thick Sn-Pb perovskite films and finally a PCE of 15.7% was obtained.

Abstract:Silicon micropyramids with n(+)pp(+) junctions are demonstrated to be efficient absorbers for integrated solar-driven hydrogen production systems enabling significant improvements in both photocurrent and onset potential. When conformally coated with MoSxCly, a catalyst that has excellent catalytic activity and high optical transparency, the highest photocurrent density for Si-based photocathodes with earth-abundant catalysts is achieved.

Abstract:In article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aenm.202000453">2000453</a>, Weili Yu, Chunlei Guo and co‐workers demonstrate that by combining the space‐limiting technique and the anti‐temperature crystallization method, millimeter sized MAPbI3 perovskite monocrystals with thickness from tens of nanometers to micrometers can be fabricated. Solar cells based on the 300 nm thick perovskite monocrystal are prepared, which show 3% enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to their polycrystalline counterparts. This work provides a scalable way to synthesize high quality perovskite crystals with less grains and grain boundaries, is believed a key step to develop perovskite single crystal solar cells with high performance.

Abstract:PbSe colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are widely used in solar cells because of their tunable band gap, solution processability, and efficient multiple exciton generation effect. The most efficient PbSe CQD solar cells use high-temperature-processed ZnO as the electron transport layer (ETL), limiting their applications in flexible photovoltaics. Currently, low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 has been demonstrated as an efficient ETL for high-efficient PbS CQD and perovskite solar cells because of less parasitic light absorption and higher electron mobility. Herein, we introduce low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 as ETL for PbSe CQD solar cells, and fabricate the PbSe CQD absorber layer with a one-step spin-coating method. The champion device with the structure of FTO (SnO2:F)/SnO2/PbSe-PbI2/PbS-EDT (1,2-ethanedithiol)/Au achieves a high open-circuit voltage of 577.1 mV, a short-circuit current density of 24.87 mA cm-2, a fill factor of 67%, and an impressive power conversion efficiency of 9.67%. Our results pave the way for the development of low-temperature flexible PbSe CQD solar cells.
Se-Elemental Concentration Gradient Regulation for Efficient Sb2(S,Se)3 Solar Cells With High Open-Circuit Voltages

Abstract:Antimony selenosulfide (Sb2(S,Se)3), featuring large absorption coefficient, excellent crystal structure stability, benign non-toxic characteristic, outstanding humidity and ultraviolet tolerability, has recently attracted enormous attention and research interest regarding its photoelectric conversion properties. However, the open-circuit voltage (Voc) for Sb2(S,Se)3-based photovoltaic devices is relatively low, especially for the device with a high power conversion efficiency (η). Herein, an innovative Se-elemental concentration gradient regulation strategy has been exploited to produce high-quality Sb2(S,Se)3 films on TiO2/CdS substrates through a thioacetamide(TA)-synergistic dual-sulfur source hydrothermal-processed method. The Se-elemental gradient distribution produces a favorable energy band structure, which suppresses the energy level barriers for hole transport and enhances the driving force for electron transport in Sb2(S,Se)3 film. This facilitates efficient charge transport/separation of photogenerated carriers and boosts significantly the Voc of Sb2(S,Se)3 photovoltaic devices. The champion TA-Sb2(S,Se)3 planar heterojunction (PHJ) solar cell displays an considerable η of 9.28 % accompanied by an exciting Voc rising to 0.70 V that is currently the highest among Sb2(S,Se)3-based solar cells with efficiencies exceeding 9.0 %. This research is anticipated to contribute to the preparation of high-quality Sb2(S,Se)3 thin film and the achievement of efficient inorganic Sb2(S,Se)3 PHJ photovoltaic device.

Abstract:Earth-abundant and ecofriendly minerals SnS x Se1–x can be promising candidates for photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells because of their tunable band gaps and high absorption efficiency. Metal nanoparticle-modified SnS x Se1–x enhance the efficiencies of solar energy water splitting. In this paper, SnS x Se1–x nanosheets (NSs) were prepared by a one-pot method and silver (Ag) nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of SnS x Se1–x NSs through a photochemical reduction process. The structural properties of SnS x Se1–x and SnS x Se1–x /Ag NSs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the morphologies of SnS x Se1–x and SnS x Se1–x /Ag NSs. The band gaps of SnS x Se1–x and SnS x Se1–x /Ag NSs were determined using the UV–Vis–NIR spectra. PEC measurements indicated that the photocurrents of SnS x Se1–x thin films increased first and then decreased with the increase of Se. The SnS0.5Se0.5 thin films had the best PEC properties. The modification of Ag nanoparticles enhanced the PEC properties of SnS x Se1–x NSs. The highest photocurrent density of 69.3 μA/cm2 and the incident monochromatic photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of 27.9% were obtained.

Abstract:PbI2‐capped PbSe colloidal quantum dot ink is prepared via in situ exchange of CdSe into PbSe. This process has good processability and is easily carried out for PbSe ink preparation. Employing this ink for a solar cell fabrication, device shows a record efficiency of 11.6% with impressive air and light soaking stability. Lead selenide (PbSe) colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. To date, PbSe CQDs capped by halide ligands exhibit improved stability and solar cells using these CQDs as active layers have reported a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 10%. However, PbSe CQDs are more prone to oxidation, requiring delicate control over their processability and compromising their applications. Herein, an efficient strategy that addresses this issue by an in situ cation‐exchange process is reported. This is achieved by a two‐phase ligand exchange process where PbI2 serves as both a passivating ligand and cation‐source inducing transformation of CdSe to PbSe. The defect density and carrier lifetime of PbSe CQD films are improved to 1.05 × 1016 cm−3 and 12.2 ns, whereas the traditional PbSe CQD films possess 1.9 × 1016 cm−3 defect density and 10.2 ns carrier lifetime. These improvements are translated into an enhancement of photovoltaic performance of PbSe solar cells, with a PCE of up to 11.6%, ≈10% higher than the previous record. Notably, the approach enables greatly improved stability and a two‐month stability is successfully demonstrated. This strategy is expected to promote the fast development of PbSe CQD applications in low‐cost and high‐performance optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this work, antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) thin films were prepared by co-evaporation of Sb2Se3 and selenium (Se) sources on molybdenum (Mo)-coated soda lime glass. Solar cells were fabricated in the substrate configuration of Ag/ITO/ZnO/CdS/Sb2Se3/Mo/Glass. The [hk1] preferred orientation grain was found to be beneficial to higher performance solar cells because of its special one-dimensional crystal structure. Furthermore, a Mo selenization process prior to the Sb2Se3 deposition was introduced to improve the Sb2Se3/Mo interface. Material characterization and device physics analysis revealed that the formation of MoSe2 due to the Mo selenization enhanced the [221] orientation preference of the following Sb2Se3 and improved the quality of heterojunction, leading to a significant increase in open circuit voltage (VOC) and fill factor (FF). The champion solar cell showed a conversion efficiency of 4.25% with a VOC of 427mV and a FF of 58.15%.

Abstract:Antimony triselenide (Sb2Se3) has possessed excellent optoelectronic properties and has gained interest as a light‐harvesting material for photovoltaic technology over the past several years. However, the severe interfacial and bulk recombination obviously contribute to significant carrier transport loss thus leading to the deterioration of power conversion efficiency (PCE). In this work, we synergistically employ buried interface and heterojunction engineering to regulate the film growth kinetic and optimize the band alignment. Through this approach, the orientation of the precursor films is successfully controlled, promoting the preferred orientational growth of the (hk1) of the Sb2Se3 films. Besides, interfacial trap‐assisted non‐radiative recombination loss and heterojunction band alignment are successfully minimized and optimized. As a result, the champion device presents a PCE of 9.24% with short‐circuit density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) of 29.47 mA/cm2 and 63.65%, respectively, representing the highest efficiency in sputtered‐derived Sb2Se3 solar cells. This work provides an insightful prescription for fabricating high‐quality Sb2Se3 thin film and enhancing the performance of Sb2Se3 solar cells. This article is protected by copyright. Enhanced Performance of the Sb 2 Se 3 Thin-Film Solar Cell by Organic Molecule-Induced Crystallization and Suppression of the Interface Recombination

Abstract:Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) is an emerging photovoltaic material. We demonstrate that an organic small molecule of N,N′-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)-N,N′-bis(phenyl)benzidine (NPB) can induce the crystallization of the Sb2Se3 film during the annealing treatment. By introducing an NPB buffer layer, the Sb2Se3 film crystal quality is improved, and the photogenerated carrier lifetime is increased. In addition, the introduction of an NPB layer can suppress the interface recombination near the anode. The solar cell was fabricated using C60 as an electron transport layer by vacuum thermal evaporation. We took indium tin oxide/NPB (6.0 nm)/Sb2Se3 (∼50 nm)/C60 (5.0 nm)/Alq3 (3.0 nm)/Al as the device architecture, where Alq3 is tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum. By adding an NPB buffer layer, the open-circuit voltage is elevated from 0.35 to 0.40 V, and the power conversion efficiency is dramatically enhanced from 3.21 to 5.03%. We attributed the improved performance to the suppression of the bulk and the interface recombination.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:AbstractColloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising optoelectronic materials for solution‐processed thin film optoelectronic devices. However, the large surface area with abundant surface defects of CQDs and trap‐assisted non‐radiative recombination losses at the interface between CQDs and charge‐transport layer limit their optoelectronic performance. To address this issue, an interface heterojunction strategy is proposed to protect the CQDs interface by incorporating a thin layer of polyethyleneimine (PEIE) to suppress trap‐assisted non‐radiative recombination losses. This thin layer not only acts as a protective barrier but also modulates carrier recombination and extraction dynamics by forming heterojunctions at the buried interface between CQDs and charge‐transport layer, thereby enhancing the interface charge extraction efficiency. This enhancement is demonstrated by the shortened lifetime of carrier extraction from 0.72 to 0.46 ps. As a result, the resultant PbS CQD solar cells achieve a power‐conversion‐efficiency (PCE) of 13.4% compared to 12.2% without the heterojunction.
Hydrazine Hydrate‐Induced Surface Modification of CdS Electron Transport Layer Enables 10.30%‐efficient Sb2(S,Se)3 Planar Solar Cells

Abstract:Abstract Antimony selenosulfide (Sb2(S,Se)3), a simple alloyed compound containing earth‐abundant constituents, with a tunable bandgap and high absorption coefficient has attracted significant attention in high‐efficiency photovoltaic applications. Optimizing interfacial defects and absorber layers to a high standard is essential in improving the efficiency of Sb2(S,Se)3 solar cells. In particular, the electron transport layer (ETL) greatly affects the final device performance of the superstrate structure. In this study, a simple and effective hydrazine hydrate (N2H4) solution post‐treatment is proposed to modify CdS ETL in order to enhance Sb2(S,Se)3 solar cell efficiency. By this process, oxides and residual chlorides, caused by CdCl2 treated CdS under a high temperature over 400 °C in air, are appropriately removed, rendering smoother and flatter CdS ETL as well as high‐quality Sb2(S,Se)3 thin films. Furthermore, the interfacial energy band alignment and recombination loss are both improved, resulting in an as‐fabricated FTO/CdS‐N2H4/Sb2(S,Se)3/spiro‐OMeTAD/Au solar cell with a high PCE of 10.30%, placing it in the top tier of Sb‐based solar devices. This study provides a fresh perspective on interfacial optimization and promotes the future development of antimony chalcogenide‐based planar solar cells.

Abstract:Sb2S3, with its high light absorption (>105 cm−1), suitable bandgap (1.7 eV), and stability, offers 28% theoretical efficiency. This study uses PbS hole transport layers via thermal evaporation, optimized by oxygen doping to refine morphology and energy levels. These advancements suppress recombination, achieving a 6.63% PCE in FTO/CdS/Sb2S3/PbS/carbon solar cells. Antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) is regarded as one of the potential candidates for the next generation of photovoltaic absorber due to its excellent photoelectric properties. However, the selection and optimization of the hole transport layer (HTL) is still a major challenge for efficiency breakthrough of the Sb2S3 solar cells. In this work, lead sulfide (PbS) is deposited as a HTL of the Sb2S3 device by thermal evaporation for the first time. A high quality PbS films is conformally coated on the Sb2S3 rear surface by regulating the feeding amount, which thanks to the mass transfer mechanism of Ostwald ripening by scrutinizing the film growth kinetics. Meanwhile, both the valence band maximum (VBM) and Fermi levels are shifted down by a deliberate oxygen doping under a low vacuum ambient, which effectively reduces the offset between Sb2S3 and carbon electrode and then accelerates hole collection. Finally, it delivers an impressive photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 6.63% for carbon‐based Sb2S3 solar cells, coupled with a Voc of 779 mV, Jsc of 14.9 mA cm−2 and FF of 57.13%, which is 13% higher than that under high vacuum condition.

Abstract:Thin-film solar cells have attracted worldwide attention due to their high efficiency and low cost. Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) is a promising light absorption material candidate for thin-film solar cells due to its suitable band gap, abundance, low toxicity, and high chemical stability. Herein, we fabricate an Sb2Se3 thin film solar cell using a simple hydrazine solution process. By controlling the thickness of the photoactive layer and inserting a poly(3-hexylthiophene) hole-transporting layer, an Sb2Se3 solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of 2.45% was achieved.

Preparing Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin film solar cells based on selenium containing precursors

Abstract:Selenium containing precursors were prepared by magnetron sputtering SnSe, ZnSe and Cu targets. Effects of different annealing temperature on performances of Cu2ZnSnSe4(CZTSe) thin film and solar cells were investigated. CZTSe absorber layers based on selenium containing precursors were obtained using different selenization temperatures. The crystal structure, phase purity, surface and cross section morphologies and the element compositions of CZTSe thin films were characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM and EDS, respectively. It was found that the crystallization quality of the thin film gradually improved with increasing temperature, and CZTSe thin films annealed at 530°Chad the best crystallization quality. The results showed that the surfaces were flat and dense without obvious secondary phase. Complete CZTSe thin films solar cells were prepared by common structure. The electrical properties of solar cells were tested by Hall, EQE and J-V. The results showed that the maximum mobility was 4.33 cm2V-1S−1, and the maximum power conversion efficiency was 3.65%, with an open circuit voltage of 346 mV, a short circuit current density of 31.36 mA/cm2 and a fill factor of 33.57%.

Abstract:Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) thin film solar cells have gained worldwide intense research owing to their suitable bandgap, high absorption coefficient, benign grain boundaries, earth-abundant element constituents and low fabrication cost. It is extremely important to investigate the interface passivation and minimize the carrier recombination to realize high-efficiency Sb2Se3 solar cells. Very little is known, however, about the carrier recombination mechanisms at the interfaces of Sb2Se3 solar cells. Herein, we show that a novel solution-processed SnO2 layer (∼12 nm) incorporated into Sb2Se3 thin film solar cells results in high power conversion efficiency of 7.5%, namely, an improvement of 39% relative to that of the solar cell without SnO2 interfacial layer. Furthermore, the open-circuit voltage (V oc ) is the highest ever reported for Sb2Se3 solar cells. These improvements benefit from the better preferred [221] orientation, less bulk and interfacial defects in the Sb2Se3 absorbers, and relatively ideal heterointerfaces due to the SnO2 passivation. This work opens up new routes for the critical importance of interfacial control in Sb2Se3 solar cells, which could be extended to other emerging low-dimensional thin film solar cells.
