Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Vector soliton operation of erbium-doped fiber lasers mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated. Either the polarization rotation or polarization locked vector dissipative solitons were experimentally obtained in a dispersion-managed cavity fiber laser with large net cavity dispersion, while in the anomalous dispersion cavity fiber laser, the phase locked NLSE solitons and induced NLSE soliton were experimentally observed. The vector soliton operation of the fiber lasers unambiguously confirms the polarization insensitive saturable absorption of the atomic layer graphene when the light is incident perpendicular to its 2D atomic layer.

Abstract:In mode-locked fiber lasers, the formation of ultrashort pulses from noisy or unstable states is a crucial area of research. Investigating these complex nonlinear dynamics can lead to valuable insights and new practical engineering techniques, particularly for the design and optimization of optical systems. Time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform, utilized in our study to investigate dissipative solitons formation in a net-normal dispersion nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locked fiber laser, provides a window into the intricate dynamics of such systems. In our experiments, the identification of five distinct transient stages in the formation process sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of dissipative soliton (DS) formation. The five distinct transient stages involved in the formation process include relaxation oscillation, modulation instability, spectral broadening, soliton explosions (SEs), and stable mode-locking. Notably, we also observed the generation of dissipative rogue waves during the SE stage. Our findings shed light on the intricate dynamics of DS formation and offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report on the vector nature of rectangular pulse operating in dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) region in a passively mode-locked fiber laser. Apart from the typical signatures of DSR, the rectangular pulse trapping of two polarization components centered at different wavelengths was observed and they propagated as a group-velocity locked vector soliton. Moreover, the polarization resolved soliton spectra show different spectral distributions. The observed results will enhance the understanding of fundamental physics of DSR phenomenon. Abstract:We experimentally investigate the vector nature of various pulsating solitons in an ultrafast fiber laser with single-wall carbon nanotubes. By virtue of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, the polarization-resolved spectral evolution of pulsating vector solitons is measured in real time. In the case of single-periodic pulsation, pulsating behaviors of the two orthogonal polarization components can be either synchronous or asynchronous. We also observe double-periodic pulsation in the cavity for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. It is shown that the shot-to-shot spectra oscillate with two combined modulation periods involved in this process. Our results would be beneficial for further understanding of the vector dynamics of pulsating solitons in dissipative systems.

Abstract:Dissipative solitons (DSs) are self-organized localized structures in non-conservative systems, which require a continuous energy exchange with external sources. In addition to parameter-invariant stationary DSs, there exists a variety of dynamical ones manifesting breathing behaviors. Such intriguing phenomena, termed as soliton pulsations, have been widely studied in recent years under the impetus of advances in real-time spectroscopy. Here, we experimentally investigate various pulsating period-doubled solitons (PDSs) in a fiber laser mode-locked by single-wall carbon nanotubes. Both single- and double-periodic PDS pulsations are found in the cavity. Thanks to the emerging dispersive Fourier transform technique, the polarization-resolved transient spectra of these pulsating PDSs are measured. It is shown that their polarization ellipses rotate with a period of two cavity roundtrips. Moreover, the intensity-modulation behaviors of the two orthogonal polarization components in the odd (even) roundtrips are always asynchronous, which confirms additional slower polarization modulations. Especially, we demonstrate that three combined intensity-modulation periods are involved in the double-periodic PDS pulsation process for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Our results would stimulate further research on the vector features of multiple-period pulsating solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:Vector dissipative soliton molecules (VDSMs) can be promising for polarization multiplexing transmission applications. We report a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) vector dissipative soliton molecule laser. The laser realizes three-type vector dissipative soliton molecules of directly generated “1+2” type, “2+2” type, and outer-cavity projected super-position “2+”2+2“” type just by changing the pump power. It's proved that the different generated methods of vector soliton molecules in Hamiltonian systems can also be realized in dissipative systems. This is also the first time that multiple different generated methods of vector dissipative soliton molecules are realized in a fiber resonator based on NPR. The results proved the VDSMs' structures can be controlled, which can be potentially applied in optical frequency comb, optical communication systems, optical logic processing, optical detection, etc.

Abstract:Solitons, as stable localized wave packets that can propagate long distance in dispersive media without changing their shapes, are ubiquitous in nonlinear physical systems. Since the first experimental realization of optical bright solitons in the anomalous dispersion single mode fibers (SMF) by Mollenauer et al. in 1980 and optical dark solitons in the normal dispersion SMFs by P. Emplit et al. in 1987, optical solitons in SMFs had been extensively investigated. In reality a SMF always supports two orthogonal polarization modes. Taking fiber birefringence into account, it was later theoretically predicted that various types of vector solitons, including the bright-bright vector solitons, dark-dark vector solitons and dark-bright vector solitons, could be formed in SMFs. However, except the bright-bright type of vector solitons, other types of vector solitons are so far lack of clear experimental evidence. Optical solitons have been observed not only in the SMFs but also in mode locked fiber lasers. It has been shown that the passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber lasers offer a promising experimental platform for studying the scalar optical solitons. Vector solitons can also be formed in mode locked fiber lasers. In this dissertation, the author presents results of a series of theoretical and experimental investigations on the vector solitons in fiber lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the dynamic process of dissipative soliton build-up by dispersive Fourier transform in net normal dispersion cavity. The oscillation of spectral bandwidth and pulse energy before the stabilization of dissipative soliton was observed, the build-up and termination of the double dissipative solitons accompanied with soliton explosion and energy interaction were observed with higher pump power. Simulation of dissipative soliton build-up process was demonstrated through the extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation, negative feedback mechanism was summarized as the reason of the pulse oscillation during the build-up process.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive numerical investigation of the polarization dynamics of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses in a passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). In our simulations, the NOLM's saturable absorption effect is modeled by its transmission function. Depending on the strength of cavity birefringence, various types of vector DSR pulses, including the polarization-locked DSR (PL-DSR), the polarization rotation-locked DSR (PRL-DSR), and the group velocity-locked DSR (GVL-DSR) states are obtained in the laser cavity. The characteristics of these vector DSR pulses are shown. We also analyze the polarization evolution and internal polarization dynamics of PRL-DSR pulses within the cavity. Our simulation results offer insight into the vector nature of DSR pulses in polarization-insensitive mode-locked fiber lasers.

Abstract:The vector nature of multi-soliton dynamic patterns was investigated in a passively mode-locked figure-eight fiber laser based on the nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). By properly adjusting the cavity parameters such as the pump power level and intra-cavity polarization controllers (PCs), in addition to the fundamental vector soliton, various vector multi-soliton regimes were observed, such as the random static distribution of vector multiple solitons, vector soliton cluster, vector soliton flow, and the state of vector multiple solitons occupying the whole cavity. Both the polarization-locked vector solitons (PLVSs) and the polarization-rotating vector solitons (PRVSs) were observed for fundamental soliton and each type of multi-soliton patterns. The obtained results further reveal the fundamental physics of multi-soliton patterns and demonstrate that the figure-eight fiber lasers are indeed a good platform for investigating the vector nature of different soliton types.

Abstract:The vector nature of dissipative-soliton-resonance (DSR) pulses is numerically investigated in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. We calculate the polarization ellipses of the DSR pulse throughout the cavity, which shows that the polarization state varies during the propagation. The features of pulse polarization are also displayed on the Poincaré sphere. The impact of nonlinear birefringence on the polarization evolution is analyzed. Furthermore, we find that the polarization state is not uniform across a DSR pulse at a fixed intracavity position. The flat-top part of the pulse has a nearly fixed polarization, while its leading and trailing edges feature polarization states that vary with time. The peak power ratio of the two orthogonal polarization components in the pulse is limited in the range from 4 to 31. Our simulation results offer insight into the polarization properties of DSR pulses in mode-locked fiber lasers containing polarization discrimination devices.

Abstract:We report the generation of tunable single-, switchable and tunable dual-, and stable triple-wavelength dissipative solitons (DSs) in an all-normal-dispersion mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser based on a graphene-oxide saturable absorber (GOSA) without additional components (such as optical filter, or fiber grating). The tunable single-wavelength DS have a wide wavelength-tunable range of 16.4 nm. The dual-wavelength DSs not only have a wavelength-tunable range (about 10 nm) but also have variable wavelength spacing (3.8-13.8 nm). The formation dynamics of the triple-wavelength DSs was also investigated experimentally. The different operations of tunable single-, switchable and tunable dual-, and stable triple-wavelength DSs depend on the strength of the cavity birefringence. The simple, compact all-fiber DS laser with lasing wavelength tunability and flexibility can meet great potential for applications.

Abstract:Atomic multi-layer graphene film as a saturable absorber was first demonstrated to be able to mode lock Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers at wavelength around 1 um. Determined by the operation conditions, single or multiple dissipative solitons (DSs) can be generated in the fiber lasers. DSs with pulse duration of 550~630 ps were generated. As graphene can also be used to mode lock erbium-doped fiber lasers at wavelength around 1.55 um, our result shows that graphene has indeed wavelength-independent saturable absorption, which could be exploited to mode lock fiber lasers with various operating wavelengths.

Abstract:Transitional operations of multiple dissipative solitons in a long-cavity normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser are experimentally investigated. Multiple dissipative solitons, including a stable soliton pair and a soliton triplet are observed by increasing the pump power or adjusting the polarization controllers. Two main boundaries of the stable asymmetric soliton and oscillating soliton are found between steady mode-locking. Moreover, multiple dissipative solitons with greater quantities of solitons are observed with pump power increasing. The experimental results agree well with a previous numerical study of multiple dissipative solitons.

Abstract:We show, experimentally and numerically, that a mode-locked fiber laser can operate in a regime where two dissipative soliton solutions coexist and the laser will periodically switch between the solutions. The two dissipative solitons differ in their pulse energy and spectrum. The switching can be controlled by an external perturbation and triggered even when switching does not occur spontaneously. Numerical simulations unveil the importance of the double-minima loss spectrum and nonlinear gain to the switching dynamics.
