Abstract:Radiation forces on a dielectric sphere produced by standing wave trapping of non-paraxial Gaussian beams of an electric dipole in the Rayleigh regime of light scattering are analysed theoretically and calculated numerically. The results show that non-paraxial Gaussian beam standing wave trapping can provide larger and sharper radiation forces, more equilibrium positions in one transverse direction and deeper potential well than paraxial Gaussian beam trapping. Therefore, Non-paraxial standing wave trapping has some advantages in capturing minute Rayleigh particles.

Abstract:The radiation force of highly focused Lorentz-Gauss beams (LG beam) on a dielectric sphere in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically studied. The numerical results show that the Lorentz-Gauss beam can be used to trap particles with the refractive index larger than that of the ambient. The radiation force distribution has been studied under different beam widths of the Lorentz part. The trapping stability under different conditions is also analyzed.

Abstract:The radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by focused anomalous hollow beams is investigated theoretically. The results show that the highly focused anomalous hollow beam can be used to trap and manipulate the particles with the refractive index larger than that of ambient at the focus point, and in the neighborhood of the focal plane simultaneously, it appears two equilibrium points along transverse direction at the focus plane in the neighborhood of the focus point, but it cannot stably trap the particles owing to the longitudinal gradient force which could not act as a restoring force at the corresponding position. And in the neighborhood of the focus plane there also exist three equilibrium points along transverse direction. It is further found that there exist two equilibrium points off axis position along longitudinal direction. Finally, the stability conditions for trapping particles are also discussed.

Abstract:This paper concerns the mathematical model and simulation of forces on Mie micro-particles in laser trap. To make the mathematical models suitable for particles with arbitrary shape, the surface of Mie particle is divided into many micro-planes, then the radiation pressure resulting from the interaction between a single incident light and a micro-plane and a individual ray tracing is obtained using the geometrical optical theory. A computer simulation program based on this mathematical model is designed to calculate the trapping force on Mie micro-particles with arbitrary shape (sphere, cone, polyhedron and particle with smooth surface). The simulation result for the trapping forces of spherical particles is consistent with that in reference [1], and comparisons are made between spherical particles and spherical particles reconstructed from NURBS, and between conical particles and conical particles reconstructed from polyhedron. These results verify the simulation program, so it can be an effective design and analysis tool for the application of laser trapping in nanometer testing and manufacturing.

Abstract:In this work, the radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric particle induced by the partially coherent circular Airy beam (PCCAB) is investigated. Our numerical results show that the PCCAB can be used to trap and manipulate particles. The radiation force distribution and trapping stability have been analyzed under different coherent lengths. It is found that, with the increase of the spatial coherent length, the radiation force is increased and the particle can be stably trapped at more points. Therefore, the radiation force as well as the depth of potential well can be effectively modulated by controlling the spatial coherent length in optical micromanipulation. The trapping properties of PCCAB have also been studied under other different parameters, including the scale factor and initial radius.

Abstract:This study investigates the propagation properties and radiation forces on Rayleigh dielectric particles produced by novel sine-modulated Gaussian beams (SMGBs) because of the unique focusing properties of four independent light intensity distribution centers and possessing many deep potential wells in the output plane of the target laser. The described beams can concurrently capture and manipulate multiple Rayleigh dielectric spheres with high refractive indices without disturbing each other at the focus plane. Spheres with a low refractive index can be guided or confined in the focus but cannot be stably trapped in this single beam trap. Simulation results demonstrate that the focused SMGBs can be used to trap particle in different planes by increasing the sine-modulate coefficient g . The conditions for effective and stable capture of high-index particles and the threshold of detectable radius are determined at the end of this study.

Abstract:Propagations of coherent and partially coherent flat-topped beams through a focusing optical system are formulated. The radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by focused coherent and partially coherent flat-topped beams is investigated theoretically. It is found that we can increase the transverse trapping range at the planes near the focal plane by increasing the flatness (i.e., beam order) of the flat-topped beam, and increase the transverse and longitudinal trapping ranges at the focal plane by decreasing the initial coherence of the flat-topped beam. Moreover the trapping stiffness of flat-topped beam becomes lower as the beam order increases or the initial coherence decreases. The trapping stability is also analyzed. Abstract:The radiation force on a dielectric sphere produced by highly focused hollow Gaussian beams (HGBs) in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically investigated. Numerical results demonstrate that, the highly focused HGB at the focus of the lens system becomes a peak-centered shape which can be used to stably trap and manipulate the particles with the refractive index larger than the ambient, and in the neighborhood of the focus the beam becomes a doughnut shape which can be used to guide the particles with refractive index lower than the ambient. The condition of the trapping stability is also analyzed.

The results show that it is feasible to utilize cosine-Gaussian beam in optical trapping system. Unlike the conventional optical beams, the cosine-Gaussian beam could simultaneously trap particles whose refractive index is lower or higher than the ambient.

Abstract:The radiation force of highly focused Bessel–Gaussian beams (BGBs) on a dielectric sphere in the Rayleigh scattering regime is theoretically investigated. Abstract:The radiation force of circular Airy beams (CAB) on a dielectric Rayleigh particle is investigated in this paper. Our results show that the CAB can be used to trap the particle whose refractive index is larger than the ambient at different positions along the beam axis. Comparing with the Gaussian beam under the same conditions, the longitudinal and the transverse gradient force of CAB on the Rayleigh particle are increased, and the particle can be trapped more stable. Our analyses also demonstrate that the trapping properties of CAB can be modulated by controlling corresponding parameters of CAB. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We derive the analytical expression for the propagation of elegant Hermite-cosine-Gaussian (EHcosG) beams through a paraxial ABCD optical system and use it to study the radiation forces produced by highly focused this kind of beams acting on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere. Owing to the characteristics of focused EHcosG beams our analysis shows that it can be expected to simultaneously trap and manipulate dielectric spheres with low-refractive index at the focus point, and spheres with high-refractive index nearby the focus point. Abstract:We investigate the dynamic evolution of the radiation forces produced by the pulsed Gaussian beams acting on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere. We derive the analytical expressions for the scattering force and all components of the pondermotive force induced by the pulsed Gaussian beam. Our analysis shows that the radiation force can be greatly enhanced due to the effect of the short pulse duration, which leads to the enhancement of both the transverse and longitudinal radiation forces. And it is found that for the pulse with large pulse duration, it can be used for the stable trapping and manipulating the particle, while for the pulse with short pulse duration it may be used for guiding and moving the small dielectric particle. Finally we discuss the stability condition of the effectively trapping and manipulating the particle by the pulsed beam.

Abstract:Radiation force of a focused scalar twisted Gaussian Schell-model (TGSM) beam on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere is investigated. It is found that the twist phase affects the radiation force and by raising the absolute value of the twist factor it is possible to increase both transverse and longitudinal trapping ranges at the focus. Abstract:We consider a class of fields generated by passing an isotropic Gaussian Schell-model beam through a wavefront-folding interferometer. The output field has various intensity profiles for different phase differences, including the central peak and doughnut shapes. The radiation force on a Rayleigh dielectric particle produced by the highly focused fields is investigated. Numerical results demonstrate that the new fields can be used to trap high-index particles at the focus for the specular case and nearby the focus for the anti-specular case. It is further revealed that the position, the range of particle sizes and the low limit of correlation length for stable trapping could be modulated by adjusting the phase difference. Abstract:The radiation force of modified circular Airy beams (MCAB) exerted on both a high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle are analyzed in this paper. Our results show that the two kinds of particles can be simultaneously stably trapped by MCAB at different positions. Compared with the common circular Airy beams (CAB) with the same parameters, trapping forces on the two kinds of particles are greatly increased because of the enhanced abruptly autofocusing property and the appearance of hollow region in MCAB. The trapping forces can be modulated by varying parameters of MCAB, and it is important to choose appropriate parameters to trap particles in practice. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, we simulate the dynamic movement of a dielectric sphere in optical trap. This dynamic analysis can be used to calibrate optical forces, increase trapping efficiency and measure viscous coefficient of surrounding medium. Since an accurate dynamic analysis is based on a detailed force calculation, we calculate all forces a sphere receives. We get the forces of dual-beam gradient radiation pressure on a micron-sized dielectric sphere in the ray optics regime and utilize Einstein-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck to deal with its Brownian motion forces. Hydrodynamic viscous force also exists when the sphere moves in liquid. Forces from buoyance and gravity are also taken into consideration. Then we simulate trajectory of a sphere when it is subject to all these forces in a dual optical trap. From our dynamic analysis, the sphere can be trapped at an equilibrium point in static water, although it permanently fluctuates around the equilibrium point due to thermal effects. We go a step further to analyze the effects of misalignment of two optical traps. Trapping and escaping phenomena of the sphere in flowing water are also simulated. In flowing water, the sphere is dragged away from the equilibrium point. This dragging distance increases with the decrease of optical power, which results in escaping of the sphere with optical power below a threshold. In both trapping and escaping process we calculate the forces and position of the sphere. Finally, we analyze a trapping region in dual optical tweezers.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent optical trapping experiments using ultra-short pulsed lasers [Opt. Express 18, 7554 (2010); Appl. Opt. 48, G33 (2009)], in this paper we have re-investigated the trapping effects of the pulsed radiation force (PRF), which is induced by a pulsed Gaussian beam acting on a Rayleigh dielectric sphere. Based on our previous model [Opt. Express 15, 10615 (2007)], we have considered the effects arisen from both the transverse and axial PRFs, which lead to the different behaviors of both velocities and displacements of a Rayleigh particle within a pulse duration. Our analysis shows that, for the small-sized Rayleigh particles, when the pulse has the large pulse duration, it might provide the three-dimensional optical trapping; and when the pulse has the short pulse duration, it only provides the two-dimensional optical trapping with the axial movement along the pulse propagation. When the particle is in the vacuum or in the situation with the very weak Brownian motion, the particle can always be trapped stably due to the particle's cumulative momentum transferred from the pulse, and only in this case the trapping effect is independent of pulse duration. Finally, we have predicted that for the large-sized Rayleigh particles, the pulse beam can only provide the two-dimensional optical trap (optical guiding). Our results provide the important information about the trapping mechanism of pulsed tweezers.
