Abstract:We report a facile one-pot method to produce magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) using as-prepared carbon nanotubes modified by NaClO. MCNTs were used as adsorbents for the removal of dye pollutants, and the resulting MCNT hybrids exhibit good dispersibility, excellent magnetic and adsorption properties of dyes, which could favor many applications such as in biomedicine, environmental and energy industries.

Abstract:Magnetic separation is based on the exertion of a magnetic field to selectively collect the magnetic responsive materials. With the development of nanotechnology, magnetic separations based on nanomaterials have found various applications largely benefited from the size effect and synthetic advancement in their preparation. In this review the synthetic methods for the preparation of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles including co-precipitation, hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis, microemulsion, and sonochemical hydrolysis are discussed. Problems related to the nanoparticle preparation such as broad size distribution, easy aggregation and difficulties in surface functionalization are summarized and directions for improvement are pointed out. Furthermore, a summary on the application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in water treatment is given including heavy metal ions removal, residue pesticide determination and removal, absorption of toxic water soluble molecules, and oily water treatment, and their new application potential is addressed specifically as a novel draw agent for forward osmosis. Finally, the perspectives and problems related to the application of iron oxide nanoparticles in water treatment are given. Abstract:A novel magnetic cellulose nanocrystal material decorated with Cu–Co ferrite was synthesized in situ by controlled hydrothermal chemistry in the presence of NH3·H2O. The ferrite nanoparticles immobilized on cellulose were found to exist in their oxide forms as identified by FTIR, XPS and Raman spectra. They demonstrate very good dispersibility with smaller crystal size after being formed in situ on the surface of a nanocellulose crystal template by the application of ammonia. The crystalline structure of cellulose can only be maintained at relatively low contents of ferrite surface decoration (11.0 %) versus high contents (e.g., 75.6 %). Moreover, the magnetic properties of the resultant materials could be controlled by changing the ratio of the molecular components in the ferrites. At the low ferrite contents, the composition was Cu0.5Co0.5Fe2O4 at a small crystal size of 13.5 nm that provided a maximum saturation magnetization of 10.95 emu/g. Finally, the thermostability of the nanocomposite was improved after immobilizing the magnetic nanoparticles.
Fabrication of Water-Repellent Cellulose Fiber Coated with Magnetic Nanoparticles under Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:Hematite nanoparticle-coated magnetic composite fiber was prepared in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). With the help of scCO2, cellulose did not need to be dissolved and regenerated and it could be in any form (e.g., cotton wool, filter paper, textile, etc.). The penetrating and swelling effect of scCO2, the slowing reaction rate of weak alkalis, and the template effect of cellulose fibers were discovered to be the key factors for the fabrication of ordered cellulose/Fe2O3 composite fibers. The structures of the composite fibers as well as the layers of Fe2O3 particles were characterized by means of scanning/transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman investigation. It was found that α-Fe2O3 granules which ranged from 30 to 85 nm with average diameter around 55 nm would be generated on the surface of cellulose fibers via potassium acetate, while irregular square prisms (ranged from 200 to 600 nm) which were composed of smaller nanoparticles (~10 nm) would be fabricated via urea. And, the obtained composite was highly water repellent with superparamagnetic or ferromagnetic properties.

Abstract:Cellulose/magnetic nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ process using cellulose fibers as template. The influences of compounding conditions on the composition results were studied. The amount of the compounded magnetic particles depends on the composition conditions, such as Fe2+ concentration, temperature, aging time, and repeat cycles. The optimal Fe2+ concentration is 0.054 mol/L and the temperature is 65°C. The amount of ferrite particles compounded on the fibers increases, and size and shape of the ferrite are optimized through reaction conditions control. The structure and the properties of the composite fibers and ferrite particles obtained were investigated by means of SEM-EDXA, FITR, atomic adsorption spectrometry and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The ferrite particles' sizes are between 20-100 nm and the nanocomposite cellulose fibers are super-paramagnetic. The magnetic nanocomposites prepared are useful in the field of magnetic-recording, anti-forge paper making and military application.
Preparation And Characterization Of Magnetic Nanocomposites Using Cellulose As Matrices By In Situ Synthesis

Abstract:Cellulose/magnetic nanocomposites were prepared by in-situ process using kapok fibers and softwood pulp fibers as matrices. The structure and the properties of the nanocomposites fibers, and ferrite particles obtained were investigated by means of SEM, X-ray diffraction, and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The results show that the iron oxide particles in composites are irregular spherical or cubical and the size of the particles is about 30 similar to 100nm in kapok fibers and 20 similar to 100nm in softwood pulp fibers. The iron oxide presenting in matrices is mainly in the C phase of gamma-Fe2O3, but both gamma-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 are present. The nanocomposited cellulose fibers are superparamagnetic. The prepared superparamagnetic nanocomposites are useful in the field of magnetic recording, anti-forge papermaking, magnetic filters and military affairs regions.

Abstract:Utilizing nature resource is one of the most effective ways to achieve sustainability development. In this work, super low-concentration CO2 in the atmosphere and rich and cheap biomaterial cellulose were used to prepare magnetic bio-composite, cellulose nanofiber/Fe3O4/CaCO3 (CFeCa). By capturing CO2 in air, Ca2+ was transformed into calcite CaCO3, which subsequently coated on cellulose nanofiber (CNF). Fe3O4 with about 50 nm in size were also observed to attach to the CNF. Thus, CNF bridged these two inorganic materials, which together fabricated stable composite with strong mutual coupling. The prepared CFeCa was applied to purify the lead-polluted water as water treatment agent. Its up-taken capacity for Pb2+ reached as high as 1010 mg·g−1. Almost 100% removal efficiency was attained, even treating Pb2+ wastewater in a wide concentration range from 5 to 250 ppm. Meanwhile, CFeCa is stable property during application. After running for 30 cycles, the treated water still met drinkable water standard. More importantly, the recovered lead was also bound on the surface of CNF, which make it easy to be separated from water and avoiding the risk of second pollution. Cheap raw materials and multiple merits of resulted composite offer CFeCa a perspective application as water treatment agent.

Abstract:The novel and unique physical and chemical properties of graphene and graphene oxide, in recent years have attracted more and more attention from scientific and professional communities. Owning to their high surface and abundant functional groups, it is possible for them to be the excellent adsorption materials in water treatment processes. However, they are not easy to separate from water matrix. To overcome the problem, so far, numerous graphene-based iron oxide magnetic nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized in various ways and showed desirable combination of adsorption and easy separation properties. Herein, we briefly introduce adsorption ability of graphene, graphene oxide and iron oxide magnetic materials for heavy metal ions, organic dyes and aromatic pollutants, and then highlight the synthesis methods and adsorption ability of graphene-based iron oxide magnetic nanocomposites. Especially, the potential applications in water treatment of these magnetic composites are discussed. Finally, a prospect for future research developments in this field is proposed.

Abstract:The preparation of multifunctional composites that combine magnetic nanoparticles and supported nanomaterials has attracted great attention for various applications. In this work, a facile method was developed for the preparation of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based magnetic composites through a one-pot oxidation method using K2FeO4 as the oxidant, which was subsequently used as the reagent to generate the Fe3O4 nanoparticles and fabricate the magnetic CNT composites. This strategy could be performed at room temperature, so it is very mild and straightforward. The properties and structure of the as-fabricated CNT-Fe3O4 composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results suggested that this approach not only generated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles on the surface of the CNTs but also produced a series of functional groups. In addition, the dried CNT-Fe3O4 composites were highly dispersible in water or organic solutions, and they also had a magnetic response that could satisfy the demand for magnetic separation. Finally, we adsorbed copper ions (Cu2+) and methylene blue (MB) using the CNT-Fe3O4 composites as adsorbents. The results indicated that the obtained composites could adsorb both Cu2+ and MB effectively. Taken together, we report a novel strategy for the fabrication of magnetic carbon nanotube composites through a facile oxidation and subsequent deposition procedure. These magnetic composites show great potential for the removal of environmental pollutants.
Nanocomposites of cellulose/iron oxide: influence of synthesis conditions on their morphological behavior and thermal stability

Abstract:Nanocomposites of cellulose/iron oxide have been successfully prepared by hydrothermal method using cellulose solution and Fe(NO3)3·9H2O at 180 °C. The cellulose solution was obtained by the dissolution of microcrystalline cellulose in NaOH/urea aqueous solution, which is a good system to dissolve cellulose and favors the synthesis of iron oxide without needing any template or other reagents. The phases, microstructure, and morphologies of nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS). The effects of the heating time, heating temperature, cellulose concentration, and ferric nitrate concentration on the morphological behavior of products were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the cellulose concentration played an important role in both the phase and shape of iron oxide in nanocomposites. Moreover, the nanocomposites synthesized by using different cellulose concentrations displayed different thermal stabilities.

Abstract:Microwave energy is an efficient form of energy used to speed up the synthesis of nanoparticles. Herein, we report the use of an unmodified domestic microwave oven to prepare magnetic spherical Fe 3 O 4 (magnetite) nanoparticles (IONPs) supported on carbonized cellulose nanocrystals, forming a nanocomposite, in an expeditious and facile one-step reaction. This was achieved using the readily available precursors of FeCl 3 as an iron source, and sugarcane bagasse, using activated charcoal as a microwave absorber. The nanocomposite was characterized using Raman spectroscopy which suggested a degree of crystallinity based on a G/D ratio of 1.25. The morphology of the Fe 3 O 4 /carbonized cellulose nanocrystal nanocomposite was characterized as spherical metallic nanoparticles supported on carbonized cellulose nanocrystals using Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM, and EDX, while the identity of the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles was confirmed with powder XRD.

Characterization Of Cellulose/Magnetic Nano-Composites Prepared By A Static-Magnetic Field Assisted In-Situ Composition

Abstract:The novel cellulose/magnetic nanocomposites were prepared by using the plentiful nanosized micropores and micro voids in cellulose fibers as templates through a static-magnetic field assisted in-situ composition. The influences of maturing time and templates' characteristics on composition efficiency were discussed. The structures of the magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by forrier transfer infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction. Results show that the composition efficiency is significantly enhanced by the static-magnetic field assisted in-situ process and the magnetic particles' content increases greatly. FTIR confirms that Fe2O3 is composited successfully on cellulose fibers. X-ray diffraction shows that the magnetic particles are mainly in the C phase of gamma-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 phase is also exited. SEM images reveal that magnetic particles are mostly composited on fibers' surface and seldom in lumen. AFM shows that the magnetic particle's size is about 20 similar to 100nm. The prepared magnetic nanocomposite is superparamagnetic with its saturation magnetization of 17.5emu/g fiber determined by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID).

Abstract:Magnetic core–shell nanocomposites were synthesized by an economical and environmentally friendly method. The shell materials with the desired composition can be obtained through simple manipulation of precursor adsorption, which can modify their performance for water treatment. The composite containing appropriate amounts of Fe, Mn, and Co oxides exhibits excellent adsorption capability and catalytic activity for removing heavy metal ions and organic pollutants in water. The results suggest that the chemical modification of the shell material is promising for the optimization of pollutants removal by core–shell nanocomposites.

Abstract:We reported a novel method to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticle and porous carbon nanofiber composite by water vapor etching treatment. Utilizing microscopy analysis of transmission electron microscopy and element mapping results,γ?Fe2 O3 nanoparticles were formed in the sample and bound tightly to porous carbon nanofibers, which was beneficial to electrochemical reaction process. Compared with chemical synthesis in solution, our method is more facile and controllable. Furthermore, this method could be extended to synthesize more kinds of metal oxide and carbon nano?structure composites, which could be applied in emerging energy devices, such as supercapacitor, Li?ion battery, fuel cell and water splitting.

Abstract:The magnetic separable iron oxide/carbon nanocomposites have been prepared with the two-phase hydrothermal–calcination method. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of XRD and TEM illustrated that the as-prepared nanocomposites were quasi-spherical Fe3O4 or γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (∼20nm) evenly dispersed on the surfaces of carbon membranes. The as-prepared products were used to investigate their promising adsorptive applications in Congo red (CR) removal. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximum adsorption capacities of the Fe3O4/C nanocomposite and the γ-Fe2O3/C nanocomposite for CR were calculated to be 48.1 and 105.3mgg−1, respectively. This novel synthesis method has the potential to prepare magnetic separable iron oxide/carbon nanocomposites for the removal of CR from aqueous solution.

Abstract:In this study, cellulose nanofibers are used as a template to synthesise magnetic nanoparticles with a uniform size distribution. Magnetic nanoparticles are grafted on the surface of nanofibers via in situ hydrolysis of metal precursors at room temperature. Effects of different concentrations of nanofibers on the morphology, the crystallite size of magnetic nanoparticles, and the thermal and magnetic properties of the membrane produced from the cellulose nanofibers decorated with magnetic nanoparticles are examined. The sizes of magnetic nanoparticles produced in this study are below 20 nm, and the crystallite size of the nanoparticles is in the range of 96-130 Å. The flexible magnetic membranes containing a high concentration of magnetic nanoparticles (83-60 wt%) showed superparamagnetic behaviour with very high magnetic properties (67.4-38.5 emu g-1). The magnetic membrane was then used as an environmentally friendly, low-cost catalyst in a sulphate radical-based advanced oxidation process. The membranes successfully activated peroxymonosulphate (PMS) to remove Rhodamine B (RhB), a common hydrophilic organic dye applied in industry. 94.9 % of the Rhodamine B was degraded in 300 min at room temperature, indicating that the magnetic nanocellulose membrane is highly effective for catalyzing PMS to remove RhB.
In situ decoration of carbon nanotubes with nearly monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles in liquid polyols

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse magnetite nanoparticles with sizes less than 10 nm have been successfully deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by in situ high-temperature decomposition of the precursor iron(III) acetylacetonate and MWNTs in polyol solution. The effects of the concentration of the iron precursor on the ultimate nanocomposites characteristics were investigated. XRD, TEM, HRTEM, EDS, and PPMS of Quantum Design were used to characterize the final products. It was found that the sizes of nanoparticles and their coverage density on MWNTs could be easily controlled by changing the concentration of the precursor and the weight radio to MWNTs. A possible formation mechanism of the magnetite-MWNT nanocomposites was suggested. It was concluded that the magnetite nanoparticles formation on MWNTs through an aggregation process of subparticles that is influenced strongly by the presence of polyols. Magnetic measurements showed that the nanocomposites are superparamagnetic at room temperature and the magnetization of the samples is strongly influenced by the reaction conditions. The resulting nanomaterials can be easily dispersed in water and can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. As-synthesized nanocomposites have high potential for applications in the fields of composites, wastewater treatment, sensors, and biomaterials.
One-pot synthesis of hierarchical magnetite nanochain assemblies with complex building units and their application for water treatment

Abstract:We report that unique hierarchical magnetite (Fe3O4) nanochain assemblies with complex flower-like nanostructures as secondary building blocks and smaller nanoparticles as primary building blocks can be prepared by a facile and surfactant-free one-pot approach using Fe(acac)(3) as precursor in polyol solution. The resultant Fe3O4 nanochains possess superparamagnetic property, large saturation magnetization (82.1 emu/g), high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area (43.5 m(2) g(-1)), and also good water-dispersibility. Thanks to these wonderful intrinsic properties, the Fe3O4 nanochains exhibit excellent ability to remove an organic pollutant in waste water. For example, Congo red, a common azo-dye in textile industry, can be completely removed within 5 min at room temperature when the initial concentration of Congo red in solution was 100 mg/L. In addition, the Fe3O4 assembled tertiary chain-like structures can be recycled by a simple heat treatment, which keeps almost the same removal ability and a litter slower adsorption rate even used for the third time. Beyond as an adsorbent for water treatment, these Fe3O4 nanochain assemblies may be useful in other fields such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and drug delivery based on their novel structures and intrinsic multi-functionalities.

There are rarely reports about synthesis of Fe, Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite by a wet chemistry method. The Fe, Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was composed of about 30 nm of tiny crystal grains. The morphology and dimensions of the nanocomposite could be controlled by the reaction conditions. Moreover, the saturation magnetization of Fe, Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite is 98.2 emu g(- 1), which is enough high for its future practical application in the water treatment. For 100 ppm of CR solution, the maximum of CR removal ability is 332 mg. g(- 1). The synergistic effect of the Fe, Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite may contribute to the enhanced Congo red (CR) removal ability.
