Abstract:Nitrogen (N) partitioning within a leaf affects leaf photosynthesis and adaptation to environmental fluctuations. However, how plant sex influences leaf N allocation and its tradeoffs in acclimation to drought, excess salt and their combination remains unknown. Here, leaf N allocation between the photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic apparatus and among the components of the photosynthesis in Populus cathayana Rehder females and males were investigated under drought, salt and their combination to clarify the underlying mechanism. We found that males with a lower leaf N allocation (NL) into non-protein N (Nnp), showed a greater leaf N allocation into photosynthetic apparatus, especially into the carboxylation component under all treatments, and a greater leaf N allocation into cell wall under drought and salt stress alone, consequently causing higher photosynthetic N use efficiency (PNUE) and tolerance to stresses. Conversely, females had a greater leaf N allocation into Nnp under all treatments than males and a lower leaf photosynthetic N (NP) allocation. There was a tradeoff in leaf N allocation among photosynthetic apparatus (NP/NL), cell wall (NCW/NL) and Nnp, which explained plant responses to drought, salt and their combination. Moreover, the leaf N allocation into the carboxylation component could explain the intersexual difference in responses to all treatments, while leaf cell wall N (NCW) and Nnp reflected intrasexual differences among treatments in both sexes. These findings indicate sex-specific strategies in coping with drought, salt and their combination that relate to leaf N allocation, which may contribute to sex-specific photosynthesis and niche segregation.
Sexually Differential Gene Expressions in Poplar Roots in Response to Nitrogen Deficiency.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is a key nutrient impacting plant growth and physiological processes. However, the supply of N is often not sufficient to meet the requirements of trees in many terrestrial ecosystems. Because of differences in production costs, male and female plants have evolved different stress resistance strategies for N limitation. However, little is known about differential gene expression according to sex in poplars responding to N limitation. To explore sex-related constitutive defenses, Populus cathayana Rehder transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolic analyses were performed on the roots of male and female Populus cathayana. We detected 16,816 proteins and 37,286 transcripts, with 2797 overlapping proteins and mRNAs in the roots. In combination with the identification of 90 metabolites, we found that N deficiency greatly altered gene expression related to N metabolism as well as carbohydrate metabolism, secondary metabolism and stress-related processes in both sexes. Nitrogen-deficient P. cathayana females exhibited greater root biomass and less inhibition of citric acid production and glycolysis as well as higher secondary metabolic activity and abscisic acid contents than N-deficient P. cathayana males. Interestingly, males presented a better osmotic adjustment ability and higher expression of resistance genes, suggesting that P. cathayana males exhibit a better stress tolerance ability and can invest fewer resources in defense compared with females. Therefore, our study provides new molecular evidence that P. cathayana males and females adopt different resistance strategies to cope with N deficiency in their roots.
Nitrogen Deposition Limits Photosynthetic Response to Elevated CO 2 Differentially in a Dioecious Species

Abstract:Sexual dimorphisms of dioecious plants are important in controlling and maintaining sex ratios under changing climate environments. Yet, little is known about sex-specific responses to elevated CO2 with soil nitrogen (N) deposition. To investigate sex-related physiological and biochemical responses to elevated CO2 with N deposition, Populus cathayana Rehd. was employed as a model species. The cuttings were subjected to two CO2 regimes (350 and 700 μmol mol−1) with two N levels (0 and 5 g N m−2 year−1). Our results showed that elevated CO2 and N deposition separately increased the total number of leaves, leaf area (LA), leaf mass, net photosynthetic rate (P n), light saturated photosynthetic rate (P max), chlorophyll a (Chl a), and chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio (Chl a/b) in both males and females of P. cathayana. However, the effects on LA, leaf mass, P n, P max, Chl a and Chl a/b were weakened under the combined treatment of elevated CO2 and N deposition. Males had higher leaf mass, P n, P max, apparent quantum yield (Φ), carboxylation efficiency (CE), Chl a, Chl a/b, leaf N, and root carbon to N ratio (C/N) than did females under elevated CO2 with N deposition. In contrast to males, females had significantly higher levels of soluble sugars in leaves and greater starch accumulation in roots and stems under the same condition. The results of the present work imply that P. cathayana females are more responsive and suffer from greater negative effects on growth and photosynthetic capacity than do males when grown under elevated CO2 with soil N deposition.
Sexually Different Physiological Responses of Populus Cathayana to Nitrogen and Phosphorus Deficiencies.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that there are significant sexual differences in the morphological and physiological responses of Populus cathayana Rehder under stressful conditions. However, little is known about sex-specific differences in responses to nutrient deficiencies. In this study, the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies on the morphological, physiological and chloroplast ultrastructural traits of P. cathayana males and females were investigated. The results showed that N and P deficiencies significantly decreased plant growth, foliar N and P contents, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, and instantaneous photosynthetic N- and P-use efficiencies (PNUE and PPUE) in both sexes. Males had higher photosynthesis, higher PNUE and PPUE rates, and a lower accumulation of plastoglobules in chloroplasts than did females when exposed to N- and P-deficiency conditions. Nitrogen-deficient males had higher glutamate dehydrogenase and peroxidase activities, and a more intact chloroplast ultrastructure, but less starch accumulation than did N-deficient females. Phosphorus-deficient males had higher nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase and acid phosphatase activities, but a lower foliar N : P ratio and less PSII damage than did P-deficient females. These results suggest that N and P deficiencies cause greater negative effects on females than on males, and that the different sexes of P. cathayana may employ different strategies to cope with N and P deficiencies.
Nitrogen nutrient status induces sexual differences in responses to cadmium in Populus yunnanensis

Abstract:Populus yunnanensis was employed as a model species to detect sexual differences in growth, physiological, biochemical, and ultrastructural responses to cadmium (Cd) stress, nitrogen (N) deposition, and their combination. Compared with the control conditions, Cd decreased plant biomass, damaged the photosynthetic apparatus, visible as a decreased maximum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII; F(v)/F(m)) and effective quantum yield of PSII (Yield), depressed gas exchange capacity, and induced oxidative stress, visible as the disruption of antioxidative enzymes and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in both sexes. On the other hand, Cd toxicity was mitigated by the recovery of gas exchange capacity, a decrease in ROS, and improvement of the redox imbalance in both sexes when N deposition was applied. However, males showed a higher gas exchange capacity, lower enzyme inhibition and ROS accumulation, stronger abilities to maintain cellular redox homeostasis, and a better maintenance of chloroplast ultrastructure than did females when exposed to Cd stress alone. Although males exhibited a higher Cd content in leaves than did females, males also accumulated higher levels of non-protein thiols (NP-SHs) and free amino acids (FAAs) for detoxification than did females. Sexual differences induced by Cd, visible, for example, in F(v)/F(m), Yield, net photosynthesis rate (A), and stomatal conductance (g(s)), decreased under N deposition, as no significant differences between the sexes existed in these parameters under the combined treatment. The results indicated that females are more sensitive to Cd stress and suffer more injuries than do males. Moreover, N deposition can mitigate Cd toxicity and decrease sexual differences in Cd sensitivity.
Sexual Competition and N Supply Interactively Affect the Dimorphism and Competiveness of Opposite Sexes in Populus Cathayana.

Abstract:Several important dioecious species show sexual spatial segregation (SSS) along environmental gradients that have significant ecological effect on terrestrial ecosystem. However, little attention has been paid to understanding of how males and females respond to environmental gradients and sexual competition. We compared eco-physiological parameters of males and females of Populus cathayana under different sexual competition patterns and nitrogen (N) supply levels. We found that males and females interacting with the same or opposite sex showed significant differences in biomass partition, photosynthetic capacity, carbon (C) and N metabolism, and leaf ultrastructure, and that the sexual differences to competition were importantly driven by N supply. The intersexual competition was enhanced under high N, while the intrasexual competition among females was amplified under low N. Under high N, the intersexual competition stimulated the growth of the females and negatively affected the males. In contrast, under low N, the males exposed to intrasexual competition had the highest tolerance, whereas females exposed to intrasexual competition showed the lowest adaptation among all competition patterns. Sexual competition patterns and N supply levels significantly affected the sexual dimorphism and competitiveness, which may play an important role in spatial segregation of P. cathayana populations.
Sex-related Differences in Physiological and Ultrastructural Responses of Populus Cathayana to Ni Toxicity

Abstract:We used Populus cathayana, a native species with an extensive distribution in northern, central, and southwestern China, as a model species to detect the sex-specific differences in photosynthetic capacity, ultrastructure, nitrogen (N) metabolism, and nickel (Ni) accumulation and distribution in response to Ni stress. Exposure to 100 μM Ni2+ in a hydroponic system for 1 month significantly decreased the pigment content and the photosynthetic rate, caused visible impairment in cellular organelle structure, and induced obvious disturbance and imbalance in the N content of female plants, while male plants suffered a lower negative influence on all the above measured parameters. However, males accumulated a higher Ni concentration in both leaves and roots than females, while the transportation ratio of Ni from roots to shoots in males was slightly lower than that in females. Our results, therefore, suggest that males have a better tolerance capacity and a greater ability to remediate Ni-polluted soil than females. This greater tolerance capacity in males might be highly correlated with the better maintenance of N balance and more effective physiological detoxification responses (such as the response to proline) under Ni stress. The differences between the sexes in tolerance capacity to heavy metals should be verified after performing a field investigation using adult trees as materials in the future study.
Sex-related and stage-dependent source-to-sink transition in Populus cathayana grown at elevated CO(2) and elevated temperature

Abstract:Dioecious plants, which comprise more than 14,620 species, account for an important component of terrestrial ecosystems. Hence, understanding the sexually dimorphic responses in balancing carbon (C) supply and demand under elevated CO(2) is important for understanding leaf sink-to-source transitions. Here we investigate sex-related responses of the dioecious Populus cathayana Rehd. to elevated CO(2) and elevated temperature. The plants were grown in environmentally controlled growth chambers at two CO(2) enrichment regimes (350 ± 20 and 700 ± 20 μmol mol(-1)) with two temperature levels, elevated by 0 and 2 ± 0.2 °C (compared with the out-of-chamber environment). Plant growth characteristics, carbohydrate accumulation, C and nitrogen (N) allocation, photosynthetic capacity, N use efficiency and the morphology of mesophyll cells were investigated in the developing leaves (DLs) and expanded leaves (ELs) of both males and females. Elevated CO(2) enhanced plant growth and photosynthetic capacity in DLs of both males and females, and induced the male ELs to have a greater leaf mass production, net photosynthesis rate (P(n)), chlorophyll a/b ratio (Chl a/b), soluble protein level (SP), photosynthetic N use efficiency and soluble sugar level compared with females at the same leaf stage. Elevated temperature enhanced source activities and N uptake status during CO(2) enrichment, and the combined treatment induced males to be more responsive than females in sink capacities, especially in ELs, probably due to greater N acquisition from other plant parts. Our findings showed that elevated CO(2) increases the sink capacities of P. cathayana seedlings, and elevated temperature enhances the stimulation effect of elevated CO(2) on plant growth. Male ELs were found to play an important role in N acquisition from roots and stems under decreasing N in total leaves under elevated CO(2). Knowledge of the sex-specific leaf adaptability to warming climate can help us to understand sex-related source-to-sink transitions in dioecious plant species.
Morphological and Physiological Responses to Contrasting Nitrogen Regimes in Populus Cathayana is Linked to Resources Allocation and Carbon/nitrogen Partition

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is essential for fast growth in Populus species. For successful forestation, it is necessary to estimate growth performance and N utilization efficiency under different N regimes. Saplings of P. cathayana were subjected to 0.25 (N deficiency), 2.5 (N normal), or 7.5 (N fertilization) mM NH4NO3 for six weeks, respectively. The morphological and physiological parameters relative to N responses were measured. In comparison with normal N, N deficiency stimulated root biomass, a reduced biomass of leaves and stem, and an elevated root to shoot biomass ratio; in contrast, the biomass of all tissues was unaltered under N fertilization. Concentrations of NH4+ in roots and leaves, and of NO3- in roots were decreased in response to N deficiency, corresponding to lower activities of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) and nitrate reductase (NR) in both roots and leaves, and of glutamate synthase (GOGAT) in the roots of P. cathayana exposed to N deficiency, whereas the opposite effect was observed in most cases under N fertilization. The imbalance of nutrients, accumulation of large amounts of stress hormones (ABA, JA, and SA), and reduced photosynthesis were observed in the plants treated with N fertilization. P. cathayana displays morphological and physiological plasticity to changes in N levels, and the growth driven by N appears closely related to the internal resource allocation and carbon/nitrogen partition. Our data indicate that moderately reducing the dose of N fertilizer may have both economic and environmental benefits in commercial poplar plantations.
Sex-specific strategies of phosphorus acquisition in Populus cathayana as affected by soil P availability and distribution.

Abstract:Soil phosphorus (P) availability and its distribution influence plant growth and productivity, but how they affect the growth dynamics and sex-specific P acquisition strategies of dioecious plant species is poorly understood. In this study, the impact of soil P availability and its distribution on dioecious Populus cathayana was characterized. P. cathayana males and females were grown under three levels of P supply, and with homogeneous or heterogeneous P distribution. Females had a greater total root length, specific root length (SRL), biomass and foliar P concentration under high P supply. Under P deficiency, males had a smaller root system than females but a greater exudation of soil acid phosphatase, and a higher colonization rate and arbuscular mycorrhizal hyphal biomass, suggesting a better capacity to mine P and a stronger association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to forage P. Heterogeneous P distribution enhanced growth and root length density (RLD) in females. Female root proliferation in P-rich patches was related to increased foliar P assimilation. Localized P application for increasing P availability did not enhance the biomass accumulation and the morphological plasticity of roots in males, but it raised hyphal biomass. The findings herein indicate that sex-specific strategies in P acquisition relate to root morphology, root exudation and mycorrhizal symbioses, and they may contribute to sex-specific resource utilization patterns and niche segregation.
Sex‐specific Strategies of Nutrient Resorption Associated with Leaf Economics in Populus Euphratica

Abstract:There are differences between sexes in physiological and functional traits and possibly in nutrient resorption, particularly in nutrient-poor environments. However, little is known about the extent of nutrient resorption from fine stems and fine roots, and about how nutrient resorption is related to leaf economics in the males and females of dioecious trees. We investigated nutrient resorption of different organs and explored whether nutrient resorption is associated with nutrient conservation traits of leaves (e.g. leaf thickness, leaf mass per area, LMA) in Populus euphratica females and males in four natural forests along the Tarim River, China. Both female and male leaves had the highest N resorption efficiency (NRE), than stems and roots. We found sexual dimorphism in leaf nutrient resorption at Shaya, Luntai and Yuli forest sites, where P. euphratica males had higher leaf NRE than females, whereas females had a higher leaf P resorption efficiency (PRE). Moreover, the different nutrient resorption strategies were related to leaf economics. P. euphratica males possess a conservation strategy with a higher leaf thickness, LMA and leaf vein density, which positively correlated with leaf NRE, while females with higher leaf PRE resorbed disproportionately more P for the reproductive investment. Synthesis. Populus euphratica males possess a conservation strategy with higher leaf NRE, while females have higher leaf PRE for the reproductive investment. Due to spatial sexual segregation across environmental gradients, dioecious plants are especially vulnerable under future climate change. The differences in nutrient uptake and utilization strategies between females and males may result in a situation where one sex is more prone to future climate change than the other one. Such sex-specific nutrient resorption strategies are associated with leaf economics. The present study deepens our understanding of the nutrient balance and adaptation strategies of plants under climate change.
Physiological Study on Sexual Differences in Responseto Nitrogen Stress in Poplar Trees

Abstract:Poplar tree is a model plant in forestry research.As The representative dioecious plant,poplar plays an important role in physiological,gene expression and derived epigenetic researches from sexual differences.Nitrogen is essential for plant growth and development,however,the mechanisms of nitrogen absorption and assimilation especially the nitrogen use efficiency in two different genders of one plant have not been well studied yet.In this study,a systematical examination of carbon and nitrogen content,photosynthesis efficiency and its parameters,the antioxidant enzyme activities as well as soluble protein and free amino acid concentrations were performed in male and female poplar trees under normal and nitrogen stress conditions.It was found that carbon content increased under nitrogen stress condition,and the female plants were more sensitive than the male plants.Total reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration was insignificantly different between the male and female plants,but the activities of antioxidant enzymes,such as peroxidase (POD),superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione synthetase (GS),were higher in female individuals than that in male ones.Soluble protein concentrations were similar in the two genders,while the amino acids content varied a lot in male and female individuals under the control and under the nitrogen stress conditions.Aspartic acid (Asp),serine(Ser),as well as arginine (Arg),etc.were higher in male plants under normal condition;most of the free amino acids were suppressed by nitrogen stress except methionine (Met),leucine (Leu) and tyrosine (Tyr),etc.We mainly analyzed physiological difference between the female and male poplar plants under the normal and nitrogen conditions.A and the potential mechanisms were also discussed.
Effects of Pb Pollution on Accumulation of Pb and Nutrient Status of Female and Male Cuttings of Populus Cathayana.

Abstract:Populus cathayana,a native species,is a typical dioecious and fast-growing woody species,which extensively distributed in China,exhibiting good adaptivity to local climates.In the present study,a controlled experiment was conducted to detect differences in Pb accumulation and nutrient status between male and female cuttings of P.cathayana,when exposed to diffused levels of Pb pollution.One-year old shoots of both sexes of P.cathayana were selected as experimental materials,and each cutting was cultivated in one pot.In our study,three levels of Pb pollution(CK:20.5 mg·kg-1;T1:50 mg·kg-1;T2:100 mg·kg-1)were set up.The experiment lasted a grown season(from June 2013 to October 2013).The result showed that:(1)The diffused levels of Pb pollution(T1and T2)significantly decreased total biomass of females,but not for that of males.However,in all corresponding treatments,the total biomass of females was significantly higher than that of males.(2)Both levels of Pb pollution(T1and T2)did not negatively affect N concentration in all organs of both sexes,and there was no significant difference in N concentration between the sexes.In contrast,the response of P concentration in both sexes was more obvious than that ofNconcentration,especially when exposed to the treatment T2.The treatment T2 decreased the P concentration in different organs of both sexes to some degree when compared to the control.When compared to the control,the decrease of N/P ratio in males suggested that growth of males would be restricted by shortage of P gradually.(3)When comes to accumulation capacity of Pb,the total Pb accumulation increased gradually in females,but not in males,along with increasing level of Pb pollution.In conclusion,our results indicated that males' capacity in resistance and tolerance against lead pollution is greater than females,and there is sex-specific adaptive strategy in response to lead pollution.The higher accumulation of Pb in females might be main reason for decreasing its biomass and imbalance in nutrient status,while lower accumulation in males might be in favor for its adaptivity to Pb-contaminated environments.
Phosphoproteomic and Metabolomic Analyses Reveal Sexually Differential Regulatory Mechanisms in Poplar to Nitrogen Deficiency.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is a key factor impacting physiological processes in plants. Many proteins have been investigated in male and female poplars under N limitation. However, little is known about sex differences in the protein modifications and metabolites that occur in poplar leaves in response to N deficiency. In this study, as compared to N-deficient males, N-deficient females suffered greater damage from N deficiency, including chloroplast disorganization and lipid peroxidation of cellular membranes. Male poplars had greater osmotic adjustment ability than did females, allowing greater accumulation of soluble metabolites. In addition, as compared to that in N-deficient males, glycolysis was less suppressed in N-deficient females for increased enzyme activities to consume excess energy. Moreover, we found that pronounced protein phosphorylation occurred during carbon metabolism and substance transport processes in both sexes of poplar under N-limiting conditions. Sex-specific metabolites mainly included intermediates in glycolysis, amino acids, and phenylpropanoid-derived metabolites. This study provides new molecular evidence that female poplars suffer greater negative effects from N deficiency than do male poplars.
Microstructural and physiological responses to cadmium stress under different nitrogen levels in Populus cathayana females and males

Abstract:Although increasing attention has been paid to the relationships between heavy metal and nitrogen (N) availability, the mechanism underlying adaptation to cadmium (Cd) stress in dioecious plants has been largely overlooked. This study examined Cd accumulation, translocation and allocation among tissues and cellular compartments in Populus cathayana Rehder females and males. Both leaf Cd accumulation and root-to-shoot Cd translocation were significantly greater in females than in males under a normal N supply, but they were reduced in females and enhanced in males under N deficiency. The genes related to Cd uptake and translocation, HMA2, YSL2 and ZIP2, were strongly induced by Cd stress in female roots and in males under a normal N supply. Cadmium largely accumulated in the leaf blades of females and in the leaf veins of males under a normal N supply, while the contrary was true under N deficiency. Furthermore, Cd was mainly distributed in the leaf epidermis and spongy tissues of males, and in the leaf palisade tissues of females. Nitrogen deficiency increased Cd allocation to the spongy tissues of female leaves and to the palisade tissues of males. In roots, Cd was preferentially distributed to the epidermis and cortices in both sexes, and also to the vascular tissues of females under a normal N supply but not under N deficiency. These results suggested that males possess better Cd tolerance compared with females, even under N deficiency, which is associated with their reduced root-to-shoot Cd translocation, specific Cd distribution in organic and/or cellular compartments, and enhanced antioxidation and ion homeostasis. Our study also provides new insights into engineering woody plants for phytoremediation.
Females Face More Positive Plant-Soil Feedback and Intersexual Competition under Adequate Nitrogen Conditions Compared to Males in Populus Cathayana.

Abstract:Plant-soil feedback (PSF) and competition influence plant performance, community structure and functions. However, how nutrient availability affects the interaction of PSF, sexual competition and coexistence in dioecious plants is poorly understood. In this study, the strengths of PSF and sexual competition, and their responses to nutrient availability were assessed in dioecious Populus cathayana using a garden experiment. We found that PSF reduced but did not eliminate the inequal sexual competition at low nitrogen (N) availability. Intersexual competition and nutrient limitation induced more negative PSF, which promoted sexual coexistence. PSF and competition were rather related to sexual dimorphism. Female plants experience more positive PSF and intersexual competition under adequate N conditions compared to males; the contrary was true with low N supply. Furthermore, the stability of root exudate networks and soil nutrient availability reflects the possibility of sexual coexistence regulated by PSF. Intersexual interaction promote more stable root exudate profiles and more saccharide secretion at low N supply. Meanwhile, the increased soil N and P mineralization in females with cultivated males explained the possible coexistence between females and males at low nutrient availability. Thus, these results indicate that soil biota can mitigate differences in sexual competitiveness and improve the stability of root exudate networks, consequently promoting sexual coexistence at low nutrient availability.

Abstract:To explore the sex-specific responses to nutrient deficiency between Populus cathayana males and females,an ionomic method was used to investigate the element changes in leaves and roots under a 60-days phosphorus deficiency.Ten elements (Ca,Cu,Fe,K,Mg,Mn,Na,P and Zn) were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-OES),and analyzed using multivariate analysis and principal component analysis (PCA).P-deficiency significantly decreased the contents of P and Cu in the leaves in P.cathayana males,while increased the contents of Ca,Zn and Cu in females.P content decreased significantly in the roots in both sexes.P deficiency led to a significant decrease of Ca content in male roots,and an increase of S content in female roots.Compared to male plants,female plants had a higher K,Zn content in the roots under both control and P-deficient conditions.The PCA results showed that the first two principal components could explain 50.6％ and 15.6％ of the total variables,respectively.The results of elemental correlation analysis showed that the competition among the same valence elements in poplars was significant,but the competition among the main elements was not significant.These results suggest that P deficiency results in a significant influence on poplar ionome,and cause greater negative effects on females than on males.

Abstract:1Previous studies have demonstrated that poplar is sexually dimorphic in its responses to environmental stresses and provided evidence of sex-related differences in protein composition, gene transcription and morphological and physiological processes. However, sexual competition of poplar has not yet been studied. We employed Populus cathayana males and females as a model to investigate intra- and intersexual competition under well-watered condition and drought stress. Our results indicated that competition significantly affected sexual dimorphism of P.cathayana under different watering regimes. Sexual competition was environment-dependent and modified by drought. In females, drought intensified the negative effect of intrasexual competition. Similar resource utilization patterns of females may aggravate pressure for resources under drought stress. Under intersexual competition, females showed a greater competitive ability than males under well-watered condition, while males showed a slight competitive advantage under drought stress. Intersexual competition seems to alleviate the sexual dimorphism of P.cathayana in response to drought stress, as females increase fitness and males decrease fitness compared with intrasexual competition. Sexual dimorphism in resource utilization patterns and niche segregation may contribute to sexual competition in a given environment. Sexual competition was found to affect competitive ability and fitness of both sexes, which may cause spatial segregation of sexes in P.cathyana populations.
Effects of NH4+ and NO3− on Sexual Dimorphism Responses to Manganese Stress in a Dioecious Tree Species

Abstract:Populus cathayana was employed as a model species to study sexual differences in plant growth, physiological, biochemical, and ultrastructural responses to manganese (Mn) stress with two different nitrogen sources (NH4 + and NO3 −). Results showed that NH4 +-N (3.75 mM) and NO3 −-N (3.75 mM) significantly increased plant growth, gas exchange capacity, as well as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities in the leaves of both male and female P. cathayana. In addition, NH4 +-N supply could improve tolerance to Mn stress in both male and female P. cathayana with higher photosynthetic capabilities, biomass accumulation, antioxidant enzyme activities, superoxide radicals (O2 −) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) in leaves. Under the same condition, female plants grown under NO3 − supply exhibited significantly lower biomass accumulation, photosynthetic capabilities, and antioxidant enzyme activities than male plants because of higher Mn accumulation in both above- and belowground organs and higher ROS releasing rate in leaves. Moreover, damage to cellular ultrastructure was also observed in leaves of males and females exposed to Mn stress, but more strongly in females, with more visible degradation of mitochondrion in plant leave cells. The difference in the preferences for different N sources between male and female P. cathayana under Mn stress provides important guidance in fertilizing strategy to minimise intraspecific competition between female and male plants.

Abstract:Abstract In our previous studies, we detected drought, gender and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) inoculation effects on dioecious plant. Based on this, we investigated the intra- and inter-sexual competition between male and female plants. Dioecious plant Populus cathayana was used and we set 3 factors in this experiment: (1) AM inoculation/non-inoculation; (2) well-watered/water-stressed; (3) single-gender pattern (only 4 males or 4 females)/mixed-gender pattern (2 males and 2 females). Growth (stem length, ground diameter, SPAD, mean leaf area, biomass accumulation) and nutrition (C, N, P, K, Ca and Mg) distribution of male and female seedlings were determined. Results Drought significantly limited plant growth and nutrition accumulation, especially in female plants; AM formation alleviated this negative effect, especially in male plants. However, the gender effect was complicated. A mixed-gender planting pattern relieved intra- competition in terms of the growth and nutrient accumulation of both genders and even alleviated the negative effects caused by drought. In the mixed-gender pattern, the differences of C, N, P, K and Ca contents between male and female plants with AM inoculation was smaller than those without AM inoculation, which indicated a potential role for AM fungi in nutrient transport. Males had a stronger physiological response to limited water availability, and more advantages from AM formation than females. Mixed-gender planting relieved the existence of intra- sexual competition of dioecious plants, and AM symbiosis alleviated the differences between genders.
