Abstract:In this chapter, we introduce and define the meaning of location-based social network (LBSN) and discuss the research philosophy behind LBSNs from the perspective of users and locations. Under the circumstances of trajectory-centric LBSN, we then explore two fundamental research points concerned with understanding users in terms of their locations. One is modeling the location history of an individual using the individual's trajectory data. The other is estimating the similarity between two different people according to their location histories. The inferred similarity represents the strength of connection between two users in a location-based social network, and can enable friend recommendations and community discovery. The general approaches for evaluating these applications are also presented.

Abstract:While chapter 8 studies the research philosophy behind a location-based social network (LBSN) from the point of view of users, this chapter gradually explores the research into LBSNs from the perspective of locations. A series of research topics are presented, with respect to mining the collective social knowledge from many users' GPS trajectories to facilitate travel. On the one hand, the generic travel recommendations provide a user with the most interesting locations, travel sequences, and travel experts in a region, as well as an effective itinerary conditioned by a user's starting location and an available time length. On the other hand, the personalized travel recommendations find the locations matching an individual's interests, which can be learned from the individual's historical data.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThere is a potential privacy breach when users access various location-based social applications on a mobile social network (MSN), e.g., sharing locations with friends. To preserve location privacy, one of the most common methods is to use a coarse or fake location instead of a user's exact location. However, most of these previous approaches only provide geometric strategies without considering the semantic context of the geographical locations. For example, if a cloaked region contains a part of a lake, where no boats are allowed, an adversary can easily prune the cloaked region to a smaller range covering a user's actual location. In this paper, we propose SALS, a semantics-aware location sharing framework based on cloaking zone for an MSN environment. By considering a user's social relations and activities which are available in an MSN environment, SALS does not assume any trustworthy entities, including strangers, friends or any third parties. As a solution, SALS enables users to cooperate with each other, in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) way, to generate the cloaking zones, which will be used instead of the actual locations. Different from the previous cloaking techniques, SALS considers the semantic location which can influence the distribution probability of a user's locations. We also propose metrics for measuring the quality of the cloaking zone. The evaluation shows that our method can well defend the semantic-location attack.

By adding a location dimension, social networking has now been brought from the virtual world back to real life and our real-life experiences can be shared in the virtual world in a convenient fashion. We define Location Based Social Networks (LBSN) as social networking services where people can track and share location-related information with each other, via either mobile or desktop computers. As location is one of the most important aspects in people's everyday lives, a lot of novel application scenarios can be supported by LBSN, e.g., trustworthy location recommendations can be collected and shared within LBSN and used to rank interesting locations, discover new places, people and activities. The objective of this workshop is to provide a single forum for researchers and technologists to discuss the state-of-the-art of LBSN development and applications, present their ideas and contributions, and set future directions in emerging innovative research for location based social networks.

All Your Location Are Belong to Us: Breaking Mobile Social Networks for Automated User Location Tracking.

Abstract:Location-based social networks (LBSNs) feature friend discovery by location proximity that has attracted hundreds of millions of users world-wide. While leading LBSN providers claim the well-protection of their users' location privacy, for the first time we show through real world attacks that these claims do not hold. In our identified attacks, a malicious individual with the capability of no more than a regular LBSN user can easily break most LBSNs by manipulating location information fed to LBSN client apps and running them as location oracles. We further develop an automated user location tracking system and test it on leading LBSNs including Wechat, Skout, and Momo. We demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency via a 3 week real-world experiment on 30 volunteers and show that we could geo-locate any target with high accuracy and readily recover his/her top 5 locations. Finally, we also develop a framework that explores a grid reference system and location classifications to mitigate the attacks. Our result serves as a critical security reminder of the current LBSNs pertaining to a vast number of users.

Abstract:The development of mobile devices and positioning technology has facilitated the rapid growth of location-based social networks (LBSNs). Users in these networks can share geo-related information in real-time, including locations, trajectories, geo-tagged pictures, and tweets. LBSNs record massive amounts of spatiotemporal data and offer a great opportunity to analyze human and location-specific spatiotemporal characteristics. It plays an important role in various applications, such as marketing, recommendations, and urban planning. In this study, we collect relevant literature about LBSNs research in the past 10 years and use a topic model, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), to uncover the highly heterogeneous area of research related to LBSNs. Then, we conduct a systematic review of those works. In doing so, we organize identified literature into eight fine-grained directions. For each direction, we sum up the major research focus and contributions. We also systematize future research into four main themes concerning data simulation and fusion, privacy-aware methods, new applications and services, and technological innovations.

HLGPS: A Home Location Global Positioning System in Location-Based Social Networks

Abstract:The rapid spread of mobile internet and location-acquisition technologies have led to the increasing popularity of Location-Based Social Networks(LBSNs). Users in LBSNs can share their life by checking in at various venues at any time. In LBSNs, identifying home locations of users is significant for effective location-based services like personalized search, targeted advertisement, local recommendation and so on. In this paper, we propose a Home Location Global Positioning System called HLGPS to tackle with the home location identification problem in LBSNs. Firstly, HLGPS uses an influence model named as IME to model edges in LBSNs. Then HLGPS uses a global iteration algorithm based on IME model to position home location of users so that the joint probability of generating all the edges in LBSNs is maximum. Extensive experiments on a large real-world LBSN dataset demonstrate that HLGPS significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods by 14.7%.

Abstract:The soaring adoption of location-based social networks (LBSNs) makes it possible to analyze human socio-spatial behaviors based on large-scale realistic data, which is important to both the research community and the design of new location-based social applications. However, performing direct measurements on LBSNs is impractical, because of the security mechanisms of existing LBSNs, and high time and resource costs. The problem is exacerbated by the scarcity of available LBSN datasets, which is mainly due to the privacy concerns and the hardness of distributing large-volume data. As a result, only a very few number of LBSN datasets are publicly released. In this paper, we extract and study the universal statistical features of three LBSN datasets, and propose LBSNSim, a trace-driven model for generating synthetic LBSN datasets capturing the properties of the original datasets. Our evaluation shows that LBSNSim provides an accurate representation of target LBSNs.
Group-Based Personalized Location Recommendation On Social Networks

Abstract:Location-based social networks (LBSNs) have attracted significant attention recently, thanks to modern smartphones and Mobile Internet, which make it convenient to capture a user's location and share users' locations. LBSNs generate large amount of user generated content (UGC), including both location histories and social relationships, and provide us with opportunities to enable location-aware recommendation. Existing methods focus either on recommendation efficiency at the expense of low quality or on recommendation quality at the cost of low efficiency. To address these limitations, in this paper we propose a group-based personalized location recommendation system, which can provide users with most interested locations, based on their personal preferences and social connections. We adopt a two-step method to make a trade-off between recommendation efficiency and quality. We first construct a hierarchy for locations based on their categories and group users based on their locations and the hierarchy. Then for each user, we identify her most relevant group and use the users in the group to recommend interested locations for the user. We have implemented our method and compared with existing approaches. Experimental results on real-world datasets show that our method achieves good quality and high performance and outperforms existing approaches.

Abstract:Due to the proliferation of GPS-enabled smartphones, Location-Based Social Networking (LBSNs) services have been experiencing a remarkable growth over the last few years. Compared with traditional online social networks, a significant feature of LBSNs is the coexistence of both online and offline social interactions, providing a large-scale heterogeneous social network that is able to facilitate lots of academic studies. One possible study is to leverage both online and offline social ties for the recognition and profiling of community structures. In this chapter, the authors attempt to summarize some recent progress in the community detection problem based on LBSNs. In particular, starting with an empirical analysis on the characters of the LBSN data set, the authors present three different community detection approaches, namely, link-based community detection, content-based community detection, and hybrid community detection based on both links and contents. Meanwhile, they also address the community profiling problem, which is very useful in real-world applications.

Abstract:With the extensive use of sensor-embedded smart phones, Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN) become more and more popular among online social networks in recent years. In social networks, constructing the shortest path with minimum cost between any two nodes efficiently is vital for both graph analysis and implementation of applications. This is well known as the routing problem in social networks. However, existing approaches of routing in social networks all fail in the scenario of LBSN which are large and dynamic. In this paper, we work out a fast routing system in LBSN leveraging check-in data to tackle this challenging problem. To be specific, firstly, we demonstrate the existence of the small world phenomenon in LBSN. Secondly, we reveal the friendship-inverse-geography property in LBSN. Thirdly, we design a Location-Based Fast Routing System LBFRS which can accomplish fast routing in LBSN leveraging geographical knowledge predicted from check-in data. Experiments on two real Location-Based Social Networks Go Walla and Bright kite have shown that LBFRS performs much more accurate prediction in geography than the baseline method and accomplishes dozens of times faster routing than Dijkstra in average.

Abstract:The rapid spread of smartphones has led to the increasing popularity of Location-Based Social Networks(LBSNs) like Foursquare, Gowalla, Facebook Places and so on where users can publish information about their current location. In LBSNs, identifying home locations of users is very important for various applications like effective location-based advertisement and recommendation. However, this problem is rather challenging because the location information in LBSNs is sparse and noisy: Only a small percentage of users share their home location information due to privacy concerns; users may check in at diverse places far from their home and make friends far away; many users even do not have any check-in information. In this paper, we propose a trust-based influence model, named as TSU to solve the problem. To be specific, TSU is a Trust-based unified probabilistic model that models edges in LBSNs based on signals from Social relationship data(social friendship, social trust) and User-centric data(check-in data) in LBSN. We proposed a Home Location Identification method based on TSU model and evaluate it on a large real-world LBSNs dataset. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms state-of-the- art methods.
