Abstract:After several decades of intensive studies, the questions about the magnitudes of rate constants of rapid heterogeneous electron transfer (ET) and ion transfer (IT) reactions remain open. The fabrication of nanometer‐sized metal electrodes and nanopipets enabled electrochemical studies of rapid charge transfer processes at solid/liquid and liquid/liquid nanointerfaces. The nanoelectrochemical techniques offer numerous advantages such as fast mass‐transfer rate and simplified analysis of data obtained under steady‐state conditions. At the same time, kinetic data obtained at nanointerfaces may be affected by double layer effects, deviations from classical electrochemical theory, and other size‐related phenomena. Nanoelectrochemical measurements are also plagued by difficulties in characterizing nanometer‐sized interfaces and conductor/insulator boundaries. In this review, we discuss the results of fast electron and ion transfer kinetics measurements at nanointerfaces, along with related reliability problems and some approaches to fixing them.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed remarkable advances in interfacial electrochemistry in room-temperature ionic liquids. Although the wide electrochemical window of ionic liquids is of primary concern in this new type of solvent for electrochemistry, the unusual bulk and interfacial properties brought about by the intrinsic strong interactions in the ionic liquid system also substantially influence the structure and processes at electrode/ionic liquid interfaces. Theoretical modeling and experimental characterizations have been indispensable in reaching a microscopic understanding of electrode/ionic liquid interfaces and in elucidating the physics behind new phenomena in ionic liquids. This Minireview describes the status of some aspects of interfacial electrochemistry in ionic liquids. Emphasis is placed on high-resolution and molecular-level characterization by scanning tunneling microscopy and vibrational spectroscopies of interfacial structures, and the initial stage of metal electrodeposition with application in surface nanostructuring.

Abstract:In this tutorial review, we will briefly introduce the history and basic concepts of micro- and nanoscopic liquid/liquid interfaces (size from nm to mm) in electrochemical studies of charge (electron and ion) transfer reactions at soft molecular interfaces. Their advantages and problems are usually compared with those of conventional liquid/liquid interfaces (size from mm to cm); and with solid/electrolyte interfaces. Three methods of fabrication of micro-liquid/liquid interfaces and one approach to support a nano-liquid/liquid interface are surveyed. The experimental and theoretical aspects are discussed along with possible approaches to characterize these micro-and nanoscopic liquid/liquid interfaces, and the methods to modify them with new functionality. Unique examples of applications of electrochemistry at micro-and nanoscopic liquid/liquid interfaces are provided. Some novel and potential research interests in the future in this field are discussed.

Abstract:The interfacial liquid, situated in proximity to an electrode or catalyst, plays a vital role in determining the activity and selectivity of crucial electrochemical reactions, including hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution/reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction. Thus, there has been a growing interest in better understanding the behavior and the catalytic effect of its constituents. This minireview examines the impact of interfacial liquids on electrocatalysis, specifically the effects of water molecules and ionic species present at the interface. How the structure of interfacial water, distinct from the bulk, can affect charge transfer kinetics and transport of species is presented. Furthermore, how cations and anions (de)stabilize intermediates and transition states, compete for adsorption with reaction species, and act as local environment modifiers including pH and the surrounding solvent structure are described in detail. These effects can promote or inhibit reactions in various ways. This comprehensive exploration provides valuable insights for tailoring interfacial liquids to optimize electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:The primary barrier to broad applications of electrocatalyst for electrolyzers, fuel cells and metal-air batteries is lack of fundamental understanding of processes that are taking place at solid-liquid interfaces. Moreover, the cost, performance and durability of the current state of the art electrocatalysts are still not at level that would warrant commercialization of these technologies. This presentation will bring the most recent progress in the development of advanced interfaces for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. The structure-function relationships in electrocatalysis that led to establishment of principles for the design of advanced electrocatalysts will be particularly discussed. It will be also demonstrated that fine tuning of the properties of solid and liquid components at the interfaces can led towards unprecedented improvements in functionality of practical materials for energy conversion and storage applications.
Liquid/Liquid Interface As A Model System for Studying Electrochemical Catalysis in Microemulsions. Reduction of Trans-1,2-Dibromocyclohexane with Vitamin B-12

Abstract:A complex electrochemical catalytic reaction was investigated at the interface between water and benzonitrile as a model for interfacial chemistry in microemulsions. Structures similar to those between oil-water microphases in microemulsions were created by using the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES). While interfacial area in a microemulsion can be uncertain, the ITIES is well-defined and can be used to evaluate relevant heterogeneous inter-facial kinetics. The reaction between the Co(I) form of vitamin B-12 generated electrochemically in the water phase, and trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane (DBCH) in benzonitrile was probed directly at the ITIES by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Apparent heterogeneous rate constants for the interfacial reaction were extracted from SECM current-distance curves, Influences of reactant concentration, potential drop across the ITIES, and adsorbed surfactants were investigated. Results suggest that the kinetics of reduction of DBCH by B-12 Co(I) are more complex at a liquid/liquid interface than that of the simple second-order rate-limiting process in a homogeneous organic solvent.

Abstract:Electrified solid–liquid interfaces (ESLIs) play a key role in various electrochemical processes relevant to energy 1,2,3,4,5 , biology 6 and geochemistry 7 . The electron and mass transport at the electrified interfaces may result in structural modifications that markedly influence the reaction pathways. For example, electrocatalyst surface restructuring during reactions can substantially affect the catalysis mechanisms and reaction products 1,2,3 . Despite its importance, direct probing the atomic dynamics of solid–liquid interfaces under electric biasing is challenging owing to the nature of being buried in liquid electrolytes and the limited spatial resolution of current techniques for in situ imaging through liquids. Here, with our development of advanced polymer electrochemical liquid cells for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we are able to directly monitor the atomic dynamics of ESLIs during copper (Cu)-catalysed CO 2 electroreduction reactions (CO 2 ERs). Our observation reveals a fluctuating liquid-like amorphous interphase. It undergoes reversible crystalline–amorphous structural transformations and flows along the electrified Cu surface, thus mediating the crystalline Cu surface restructuring and mass loss through the interphase layer. The combination of real-time observation and theoretical calculations unveils an amorphization-mediated restructuring mechanism resulting from charge-activated surface reactions with the electrolyte. Our results open many opportunities to explore the atomic dynamics and its impact in broad systems involving ESLIs by taking advantage of the in situ imaging capability.

Abstract:One strategy for developing improved catalysts is to create systems that merge the advantages of heterogeneous substances. Here, we further develop this idea and describe a liquid-liquid interface consisting of liquid metal (alloy) and aqueous solution for gas electrocatalysis. Following the application of our designed device, it is possible to make the gas bubble from the liquid metal and then encounter and react with electrons and protons delivered respectively by liquid metal and aqueous solution at the interface. This work proposes a usage of liquid electrode, taking electrocatalytic CO2 reduction as an example, obtaining higher Faraday efficiency and space-time yield for formate production.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method to fabricate nano-metal electrodes and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) tips has been developed, and fabricated electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry and SECM. Based on the combination of nanoelectrodes (including metal and glass pipets ) and SECM, and the droplet three-electrode system developed previously by our group, we have investigated the charge (electron and ion) transfer kinetics at the polarizable liquid/liquid interfaces. The experimental results demonstrate that the facilitated ion transfer (FIT) at liquid/liquid interface is potential dependent in a certain region, and the electron transfer (ET) kinetics can be explained by using the Marcus theory when the concentrations of the redox couple for each phase are appropriate.

Abstract:In electro-catalytical conversion of inorganic molecules, solid-solid interfaces universally form during the synthesis of electrocatalysts and the preparation of electrodes; they can also form during the electrochemical process of charging or discharging. In this feature article, the various solid-solid interfaces in porous electrodes are covered. In particular, by referring to studies in our group, a concept of specific interfacial area is proposed, which provides an index to evaluate the solid-solid interfacial interaction at meso-scale; furthermore, two types of solid-solid interfacial interactions at micro-scale, namely the Van der Waals interface and the covalent interface, are discussed and compared in terms of their efficiency in electrocatalysis; empirical yet general guidelines for construction of solid-solid heterogeneous interfaces which support efficient interfacial electron transfer and electrocatalytic stability are provided accordingly. Last but not least, the role of interfacial electron delocalization behaviors in modulating the local electronic structure of the active sites and catalytic activity is emphasized. With this, this feature article aims to showcase the importance and charm of solid-solid heterogeneous interface in regulating the efficiency of electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Many key industrial processes, from electricity production, conversion, and storage to electrocatalysis or electrochemistry in general, rely on physical mechanisms occurring at the interface between a metallic electrode and an electrolyte solution, summarized by the concept of an electric double layer, with the accumulation/depletion of electrons on the metal side and of ions on the liquid side. While electrostatic interactions play an essential role in the structure, thermodynamics, dynamics, and reactivity of electrode-electrolyte interfaces, these properties also crucially depend on the nature of the ions and solvent, as well as that of the metal itself. Such interfaces pose many challenges for modeling because they are a place where quantum chemistry meets statistical physics. In the present review, we explore the recent advances in the description and understanding of electrode-electrolyte interfaces with classical molecular simulations, with a focus on planar interfaces and solvent-based liquids, from pure solvent to water-in-salt electrolytes.

Abstract:A liquid–liquid interface supported on a metallic electrode has been used to study ion transfer (IT) and electron transfer (ET) reactions by cyclic voltammetry. The system is composed of an aqueous droplet supported on a platinum disc electrode and immersed into an organic electrolyte solution. Depending on the nature of the dissolved species present in the aqueous solution, and in the organic electrolyte solution, different electrochemical coupled reactions can be observed. This method enables a fast and convenient method to measure standard transfer potentials for example of ionised drug molecules.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs), salts with melting points below 100 °C, represent a fascinating class of liquid materials typically characterized by an extremely low vapor pressure. Besides their application as new solvents or as electrolytes for electrochemical purposes, there are two important concepts of using ILs in catalysis: Liquid–liquid biphasic catalysis and IL thin film catalysis. Liquid–liquid biphasic catalysis enables either a very efficient manner to apply catalytic ILs, e.g. in Friedel–Crafts reactions, or to apply ionic transition metal catalyst solutions. In both cases, phase separation after reaction allows an easy separation of reaction products and catalyst re-use. One problem of liquid–liquid biphasic catalysis is mass transfer limitation. If the chemical reaction is much faster than the liquid–liquid mass transfer the latter limits the overall reaction rate. This problem is overcome in IL thin film catalysis where diffusion pathways and thus the characteristic time of diffusion are short. Here, Supported Ionic Liquid Phase (SILP) and Solid Catalyst with Ionic Liquid Layer (SCILL) are the two most important concepts. In both, a high surface area solid substrate is covered with a thin IL film, which contains either a homogeneously dissolved transition metal complex for SILP, or which modifies catalytically active surface sites at the support for SCILL. In each concept, interface phenomena play a very important role: These may concern the interface of an IL phase with an organic phase in the case of liquid–liquid biphasic catalysis. For IL thin film catalysis, the interfaces of the IL with the gas phase and with catalytic nanoparticles and/or support materials are of critical importance. It has recently been demonstrated that these interfaces and also the bulk of ILs can be investigated in great detail using surface science studies, which greatly contributed to the fundamental understanding of the catalytic properties of ILs and supported IL materials. Exemplary results concerning the IL/vacuum or IL/gas interface, the solubility and surface enrichment of dissolved metal complexes, the IL/support interface and the in situ monitoring of chemical reactions in ILs are presented.Graphical AbstractImportant concepts in catalysis with ionic liquids are reviewed, including Supported Ionic Liquid Phase (SILP) and Solid Catalyst with Ionic Liquid Layer (SCILL), along with the detailed analysis of the relevant interfaces using surface science methods.

Abstract:Electrochemistry plays a pivotal role in a vast number of domains spanning from sensing and manufacturing to energy storage, environmental conservation, and healthcare. Electrochemical applications encompassing gaseous or organic substrates encounter shortcomings ascribed to high mass transfer/internal resistances and low solubility in aqueous electrolytes, resulting in high overpotentials. In practice, strong acids and expensive organic electrolytes are required to promote charge transfer in electrochemical cells, resulting in a high carbon footprint. Liquid–liquid (L–L) and gas–liquid (G–L) dispersions involve the dispersion of a nano/micro gas or liquid into a continuous liquid phase such as micelles, (macro)emulsions, microemulsions, and microfoams stabilised by surface-active agents such as surfactants and colloidal particles. These dispersions hold promise in addressing the drawbacks of electrochemical reactions by fostering the interfacial surface area between immiscible reagents and mass transfer of electroactive organic and gas reactants and products from/to the bulk to/from the electrode surface. This tutorial review provides a taxonomy of liquid–liquid and gas–liquid dispersions for applications in electrochemistry, with emphasis on their assets and challenges in industrially relevant reactions for fine chemistry and depollution.

Abstract:Energy conversion and harvesting technologies primarily rely on interface interactions at the liquid–liquid and liquid–solid interfaces. The efficient functioning of these technologies can be achieved through interface engineering, which regulates mass transfer and charge transportation. Several strategies have been employed to control the properties of the interface and enhance energy conversion efficiency. Significant progress has been made in understanding reactions at the liquid interface, opening new opportunities for its application. This review summarizes recent advancements in liquid interface manipulation methods, such as structured liquids and ultra-stable emulsions, and various liquid interface-based applications, including hydrovoltaic, triboelectric nanogenerators, all-liquid batteries, and water desalination, offering insights into the understanding of the complicated liquid interface and the reactions happening at liquid interfaces.

Abstract:The fundamental water cycle, carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle relying on heterogeneous gas-involving electrocatalytic processes have attracted extensive attention due to their critical contributions to clean, sustainable and energy–environmental electrochemical devices. The development of electrocatalytic materials has afforded gradually improved electrocatalytic reaction efficiency and increasingly promising implementation of electrochemical techniques. In gas-involving electrocatalytic reactions, apart from the intrinsic reaction kinetics, the microenvironment at the triple-phase interfaces of the solid catalyst, liquid electrolyte and gaseous reactant or product under reaction conditions can exert a significant effect on the eventual electrochemical performance since the key issues, including mass transport, electron conduction and accessibility of active sites, are highly sensitive to the electrocatalytic processes. Herein, we systematically summarize the up-to-date progress in energy-related electrocatalysts based on gas–liquid–solid triple-phase interface engineering in terms of an active-site-enriched surface, decent gas wettability and electrolyte infiltration and favorable electronic conductivity. To establish universal theory–structure–function relationships based on triple-phase interface engineering, the corresponding insightful understanding, architecture design/constituent regulation of electrocatalytic materials and admirable electrocatalytic activity are discussed, simultaneously revealing the practical energy-related applications in water electrolyzers, metal-based batteries and fuel cells. Finally, the remaining challenges, possible opportunities and future perspectives are highlighted.Graphical AbstractThe gas–liquid–solid triple-phase interface is of crucial importance for the electrocatalytic nitrogen, carbon and oxygen cycles based on electrochemical energy-related devices as it affords the direct influence on accessibility of active sites and the mass/electron transfer. Abstract:Electron-transfer (ET) reactions at a liquid/liquid (L/L) interface have attracted much attention because they are relevant to many important chemical and biological processes. At an L/L interface, the ET reaction is usually coupled with an ion-transfer (IT) reaction, and it is difficult to discriminate between them. Despite the great progress that has been made, the nature of the coupling is still unclear and the two proposed mechanisms have been the subject of much debate over the past several decades. Herein, the coupling reactions between ferrocene (Fc) in 1,2-dichloroethane and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) in water are investigated in detail by using various types of pipette electrodes, and the two mechanisms are clarified with the help of salting-out effects. It is demonstrated that the mechanism which dominates is dependent on the concentration ratio of the redox species in the two phases.

Abstract:Understanding the diverse electrochemical reactions occurring at electrode-electrolyte interfaces (EEIs) is a critical challenge to developing more efficient energy conversion and storage technologies. Establishing a predictive molecular-level understanding of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) is challenging due to the presence of multiple intertwined chemical and electrochemical processes occurring at battery electrodes. Similarly, chemical conversions in reactive electrochemical systems are often influenced by the heterogeneous distribution of active sites, surface defects, and catalyst particle sizes. In this mini review, we highlight an emerging field of interfacial science that isolates the impact of specific chemical species by preparing precisely-defined EEIs and visualizing the reactivity of their individual components using single-entity characterization techniques. We highlight the broad applicability and versatility of these methods, along with current state-of-the-art instrumentation and future opportunities for these approaches to address key scientific challenges related to batteries, chemical separations, and fuel cells. We establish that controlled preparation of well-defined electrodes combined with single entity characterization will be crucial to filling key knowledge gaps and advancing the theories used to describe and predict chemical and physical processes occurring at EEIs and accelerating new materials discovery for energy applications.
