Abstract:The characteristics of surface and interface of nanocomposites are favor for exerting some functional properties and widening new applications. Some low-dimensional materials generally have abundant chemical groups and reaction activities. These surface chemical groups of nanomaterials provide a large platform to develop new nanocomposites and applications by surface chemical reaction and surface reconstruction of another kind of materials. Among so many hot-fields materials, graphene and its nanocomposite are developed rapidly. The graphene oxide not only has good charge transferring property, but also has abundant chemical groups on its surface, such as, -COOH, -OH and epoxide group. Therefore, graphene oxide is a good candidate substrate for further constructing other functional materials in nanoscale. The graphene oxide and pyrene derivatives were selected as representative materials for studies. Assembly of pyrene containing –NH2 groups on the surface of graphene oxide was carried out. A series of characterizations were performed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), the FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared ) spectra, The UV-Vis (Ultra-violet visible spectroscopy), photoluminescence spectra, et al. The results indicated that the UV-Vis of nanocomposite was almost covered the whole region of visible light, and the results of PL showed strong fluorescence quenching. There was strong interaction between the graphene oxide and pyrene. The photoconductivity response to weak visible light and 808 nm laser were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible PET(polyethylene terephthalate) film substrate with casting method. The results showed that graphene oxide modified with pyrene derivatives exhibited that the photocurrent increased obviously to visible light, and photoresponse to weak 808 nm laser emerged photo-switching behavior. It would be developed the light detector to NIR, biomimetic fields or external stimuli driven nanocarriers for biomedical fields, et al.

Abstract:Two kinds of acrylate-modified polyesters were synthesized, one of the two is semi-crystalline while the other is amorphous, and the UV-curable powder coatings with two components can be made up by mixing these two kinds of polyesters in different ratios. Experiments show that the introduction of semi-crystalline polyester into the coating will substantially improve the direct and reverse impact resistance and the crosshatch adhesion of the cured film while the other general properties of the UV-curable powder coatings remain excellent.

Abstract:Graphene from two different preparative routes was successfully functionalized with 4-propargyloxybenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate in order to study a subsequent attachment by click chemistry (1,3-dipolar azide-alkyne cycloaddition) of a short chain polyethylene glycol with terminal carboxylic end group (PEG-COOH). The reaction steps were studied by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies, as well as zeta-potential and surface tension measurements. In the first route, pristine graphene was surfactant dispersed from a stage controlled expanded graphite before reaction, resulting in colloidally stable dispersions after dialysis removal of the surfactant following the two functionalization steps. The chemistry was shown to increase the zeta-potential from -45.3 to -54.6 mV and increase the surface tension from 48.5 to 63.0 mN/m compared to those of the precursor solution. The magnitudes of the zeta-potential and the resulting solution concentration were shown to increase with grafting density up to 14.2 mu g/mL. A colloidal stability model was used to estimate the maximum grafting density of the PEG-COOH groups yielding a value of 1 per 10 nm(2). Raman mapping before and after the two-step functionalization suggests that edges and defects are preferentially reacted. In the second route, we investigated the same click chemistry functionalization on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesized monolayer graphene films, which showed higher reactivity than solution-dispersed graphene. Because these methods do not originate with the more oxidized forms of graphene, the results point to new ways of more precisely controlling the chemistry of graphene.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing polymers (FcPs) have attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to their unique properties and enormous applications. However, it is a great synthetic challenge to prepare FcPs before the advent of click chemistry. In this review, we summarized the recent research efforts on synthesizing FcPs through click reactions, which include click modification of preformed polymers and click polymerization of ferrocene (Fc) containing monomers. Due to the containing Fc moieties, the FcPs enjoy excellent redox activity, thermal stability, electrochemical property, and magnetism. Accordingly, they are promising to be used as electrochemical sensors, catalysts, magneto-ceramics, electrode modifiers, optical devices, etc.
In situ preparation of functionalized graphene oxide/epoxy nanocomposites with effective reinforcements

Abstract:In order to obtain homogeneous dispersion and strong filler-matrix interface in epoxy resin, graphene oxide was functionalized via surface modification by hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and glycidol and then incorporated into epoxy resin to obtain nanocomposites via in situ thermal polymerization. The morphology of nanocomposites was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, implying good dispersion of graphene nano-sheets. The incorporation of functionalized graphene oxide effectively enhanced various property performances of epoxy nanocomposites. The storage modulus of the epoxy nanocomposites was significantly increased by 113% (2% addition) and the hardness was improved by 38% (4% addition). Electrical conductivity was improved by 6.5 orders of magnitude. Enhanced thermal stability was also achieved. This work demonstrates a cost-effective approach to construct a flexible interphase structure, strong interfacial interaction and good dispersion of functionalized graphene in epoxy nanocomposites through a local epoxy-rich environment around graphene oxide sheets, which reinforces the polymer properties and indicates further application in research and industrial areas.

Abstract:Functionalized graphene nanosheets (f-GNSs) were synthesized by a simple covalent functionalization of graphene with 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTES). The results from FTIR, XPS and XRD showed that MPTES was successfully attached onto the surface of graphene. Functionalized graphene/polyurethane acrylate (f-GNS/PUA) nanocomposites were prepared by UV radiation of PUA with f-GNS. The onset thermal degradation temperature of f-GNS/PUA nanocomposite was increased by 16°C, at an f-GNS content of 1wt%. Meanwhile, the storage modulus and glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites were enhanced by incorporating f-GNS into the PUA. This is believed to be attributed to that the covalent functionalization of graphene can improve both the dispersion of f-GNSs in the polymer matrix and the interfacial interactions between f-GNSs and PUA.

Abstract:Functionalized graphene-reinforced polyurethane nanocomposite coatings were prepared using the sol–gel method. This method not only provides a "green" strategy for fabricating the graphene-based nanocomposites, but also realizes the covalent functionalization of graphene nanosheets with polymer matrix. The functionalization of graphene with conjugated organosilanes is favorable for improving mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposite coatings, which is mainly attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of functionalized graphene in the polymer matrix and strong interfacial interactions between the two components. A 71% increase in tensile strength and a 86% improvement of Young's modulus are observed by the addition of 2.0 wt.% of functionalized graphene. The experimentally determined Young's modulus corresponds well with the theoretical simulation under the hypothesis that the graphene sheets are randomly dispersed in the polymer matrix.

Abstract:By combining a trifunctional urethane acrylate synthesized from a hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer and caprolactone acrylate with a bifunctional urethane acrylate prepared from hydroxyethyl acrylate and isophorone diisocyanate, a new reactive resin mixture was prepared, and trimethylolpropane triacrylate was chosen as the thinner to constitute a novel coating matrix. Different amounts of multi-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) were introduced into the matrix and cured by ultraviolet radiation, producing different coatings. Utilizing the methods of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the chemical structures and physical properties of the coatings were analyzed. A series of ASTM methods, such as pencil hardness classification, RCA abrasion, crosscut adhesion test classification, and chemical resistance rub testing, were applied to investigate the performances of the coatings. It was found that introducing a small amount of carbon nanomaterials can improve the thermal stability, surface hardness, adhesion, abrasive resistance, and chemical resistance performance of the UV-curable coatings. The reasons and mechanisms of the performance improvements are discussed in this work.

Abstract:Graphene has stimulated enormous interest due to its intriguing structure and fascinating properties. The extremely high carrier mobility, mechanical flexibility, and optical transparency as well as the versatility for band structure engineering make graphene a promising candidate for next-generation carbon-based electronic devices. Graphene chemistry, the covalent functionalization of graphene as a 2D giant molecule, offers a promising direction to controllably tailor its properties through the introduction of various chemical decorations. One of the great challenges for graphene functionalization originates from its strong chemical stability, thus highly reactive chemical species are needed as the reactants. In recent years, novel photochemical approaches have been developed to achieve efficient graphene modification and bandgap modulation, following a general concept of Photochemical Bandgap Engineering of Graphene. In this article, such kinds of photochemical graphene engineering are demonstrated, together with a brief discussion on the future directions, challenges, and opportunities in this fascinating research area.

Abstract:Improving the corrosion resistance of epoxy resin coatings has become the focus of current research. This study focuses on synthesizing a functionalized silane coupling agent (2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyl triethoxysilane) to modify the surface of graphene oxide to address nanomaterial agglomeration and enhance the coating resistance of the epoxy resin coating to corrosion by filling the coating with functionalized graphene oxide. Functionalized graphene oxide and coatings filled with functionalized graphene oxide were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The corrosion performance of each coating was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and a salt spray test. Results showed that the incorporation of functionalized graphene oxide enhances the corrosion protection performance of the epoxy composite coating, and the composite coating exhibited the best anticorrosion performance when the amount of functionalized graphene oxide was 0.7 wt %.

Abstract:Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was decorated with organic/inorganic nanoparticles through an in situ sol-gel process with various thicknesses. The presence of organic/inorganic nanoparticles made the rGO lipophilic, as evidenced by the good dispersion of the nanoparticles-rGO in dimethyl formamide solvent (DMF). The thickness of the nanoparticles-rGO could be varied by adjusting the amount of the silicane additive, as evidenced by the AFM results. The nanoparticles-rGO was then incorporated into polyurea in different ratios via in situ polymerization and the property enhancement of the nanocomposites was investigated. The TEM morphological study showed that, due to the good interfacial interaction between the nanoparticles-rGO and polyurea, nanoparticles-rGO was dispersed well in the polyurea matrix. Compared with the rGO, the nanoparticles could significantly improve the thermal stability and thermal conductivity of polyurea, implying that the good dispersion of rGO and the functional groups on the surface of rGO had a significant effect on the thermal stability and thermal conductivity of polyurea. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) of nanoparticles-rGO/polyurea nanocomposites was significantly reduced, which indicated that the combustible gas releasing rate of polyurea was reduced. Moreover, the storage modulus and tensile strength of the nanocomposites with 0.2 wt% have been enhanced by about 60% and 110% in comparison with those of neat polyurea, respectively. This simple and effective approach, decorating the rGO with organic/inorganic nanoparticles, is believed to offer possibilities for broadening the graphene applications in the polymer materials and make it possible to decorate the graphene with other functional groups and vary the aspect ratio of decorated graphene according to its application.

Abstract:Graphene, a two-dimensional crystalline monolayer made of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, holds a set of remarkable electronic and physical properties, such as ballistic transport with low resistivity, high chemical stability, and high mechanical strength. By taking advantage of these, in recent years our research group has performed a series of studies for modifying the surfaces of graphene and tuning its properties. These studies can be mainly divided into two categories. First, we opened graphene's band gap to some extent through covalent and/or noncovalent chemical modifications, and installed sensing functions into graphene. In detail, we grafted nitrophenyl group onto graphene through an electrochemical method and methyl group onto graphene by plasma treatment to open its band gap. Also, we assembled lead sulfide or titanium dioxide onto graphene through electron beam evaporation to achieve optical or gas sensing. A rotaxane molecule with a bistable structure was also assembled onto graphene through pi-pi stacking to obtain optical switches with logic capability. On the other hand, we also fabricated graphene-based nanoelectrodes for making a new-generation molecular electronic devices with diverse functionalities. In detail, we cut graphene using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching to obtain graphene electrodes. Poly(3-hexyl thiophene) or copper phthalocyanine was spin-coated onto these electrodes to achieve field effect transistors with the high carrier mobility and photoresponsive property. We further developed graphene nanoelectrodes by dash-line lithography, and molecular bridges with different functions were connected between these nanoelectrodes. These single molecule devices can switch their conductance upon exposure to external stimuli, such as metal ion, pH and light. Looking into the future, graphene, as a representative of carbon-based nanomaterials, will continue to play an important role in the area of nano/molecular electronics.

Abstract:Functionalized graphene with reactive moieties is promising to significantly enhance the interfacial strength of graphene materials with thermoset resins and their dispersion in resins. Most of the previous reactive graphene materials were prepared through the covalent modification of oxidation-produced oxygen-containing groups of the graphene oxides, which, however, have intensive defects and weakened mechanical strength, Young's modulus, and thermal stability. Starting from the commercially available graphene, we herewith developed a one-pot direct grafting approach for the fabrication of epoxy-reactive graphene. This grafting is achieved by the diazonium addition reaction of 10-(2′,5′-dihydroxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (ODOPB) functionalized 4-aminobenzoic acid with the pristine graphene sheets. We further demonstrated this one-pot grafting approach could be controlled well by simply changing the ODOPB functionalized 4-aminobenzoic acid concentration to fine-tune the grafting density. In the graphene reinforced epoxy composite, ODOPB moieties grafted onto graphenes act as anchors, ensuring the improved dispersion of graphene sheets. The ODOPB functionalized graphene composites demonstrated a dramatically enhanced fracture toughness (a critical-stress-intensity factor, KIC value of 2.1) than graphene-epoxy composites (a KIC value of 1.3) and neat epoxy material (a KIC value of 1.8). Furthermore, its flame retardance, as evaluated by limit oxygen index (LOI) tests, improved by 29.5%. This one-pot approach provides an easily up-scalable and efficient approach for enhancing the interfacial strength and the dispersibility of graphene composites and incorporating new functions into polymer nanocomposites by graphene carriers.

Abstract:Graphene, the typical two-dimensional sp(2) hybridized carbon allotrope, is widely used as a filler for improving the mechanical performance of polymers. However, its superhydrophobic surface makes it a big challenge to obtain stable graphene dispersions, especially in water-borne systems. On the contrary, graphene oxide (GO) shows excellent dispersibility in water, but strong oxidants and acids destroy its structure and degrade its mechanical properties. This largely limits its application in water-borne coatings. In this work, graphene from mechanical exfoliation was surface modified by p-aminophenol derived diazonium salt to achieve a homogenous dispersion. Moreover, the hydroxyl groups in p-aminophenol are able to combine with epoxy resins during the curing process to improve mechanical performance of the final coatings. The result shows that functionalized graphene shows a lower coefficient of friction and better abrasion resistance compared to GO.

Abstract:In this study, the reinforcement effects of graphene on the properties of bio-based polyurethane (PU) were studied with the use of 1 wt% three functionalized graphene (dispersible graphene, reduced graphene oxide-NH2, and reduced graphene oxide-tetraethylene pentamine). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed the relatively homogeneous dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets in the PU matrix. It was found that the addition of 1 wt% of the different graphenes could lead to a significant reinforcement effect on the bio-based PU. Especially, PU nanocomposite with 1 wt% dispersible graphene exhibited 6 degrees C improvement in the T-g, 75% increment in storage modulus at 25 degrees C, 34% increase in tensile strength, and 30% increase in Young's modulus.
